Degale has been offered a fight with George Groves – News

By Liam Santiago: 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist James ‘DeGold’ Degale has reportedly been offered £50,000, according to Sportinglife, to fight his bitter rival, George Groves on the undercard of David Haye’s easy fight against John Ruiz.

Groves beat DeGale in the amateurs and many say he looks a much better pro than the Gold Medalist. The big question is will DeGale reject and fight another guy with terribly bad punch resistance.

If you ask me, out of all the Olympians that turned pro last year, DeGale looks to have adapted worst to the paid ranks. I wish I did not have to say this because I really like the guy. However, he just looks so uncomfortable as a pro. Billy Joe Saunders, David Price and Tony Jeffries have adapted fantastically from amateur to pro but DeGale just seems to be lacking something to me.

Will DeGale and Groves fight? Maybe. But then again maybe Amir Khan will fight his mandatory challenger Marcos Maidana. Or maybe Ivan Calderon will fight Vitali Klitschko for the vacant middleweight title. Don’t expect this fight to happen for at least five years. Expect both DeGale and Groves to build a record of about 30 wins and no losses against Latvian and Georgian guys for the next decade then they might get it on.

this fight will not happen…that’s not “ducking” it’s about maximising earnings. both these guys are very promosing & are developing good followings. why match them up now, when you can make so much more doing it later? it’s a no-win situation.

btw their really is no need to be so harsh towards degale. he isn’t the finished article, true, but he is a top prospect imo. i can see him being a solid domestic level pro & potentially a world champ.

I think you have forgotten to include Pacquiao in this article, at least you remembered to dig at Khan and Haye, otherwise it just would’nt have been a Santiago post would it ?
Clearly your making things up again, why would anyone involved want to see these two fighting at this stage of thier career. Niether one of them is ready to take on opponents that pose as serious a threat to the other as these two do. This is a huge domestic fight in years to come, possibly even a fight at a higher level or even a global mega fight, who knows. But they certainly wont meet for a long time yet.

Haha. This guy actually knows boxers other than Pacquiao.

Your right in that De Gale looks uncomfortable as a pro compared to the others. Just look at Frankie Gavin, the guy was made to be a pro boxer though he was lucky to get the stoppage in his last fight. I think he learnt a lot from that one – sometimes you cannot just blow an opponent away.

groves will murder him. it wont happen for a long time yet

  • Joe says:

I would like to see it now

Cause they wont meet otherwise imo

    Ha! Good article, for once.

Degale will be the first British Olympian to be beaten and it will probably be by KO. He got KTFO in the amateurs, for goodness sakes!!!
