Chad Dawson v Jean Pascal: A shock in store?

By Daniel Ciminera: I’ve read other articles about this prospective June 19th fight and spoken to a lot of people about it, and the general consensus is that it is an easy win for Dawson.

Probably by knockout. However, whilst I was tempted to agree and say Bad Chad steamrolls Pascal as the only thing he’s done which impressed me, was beat Diaconu one-handed. I don’t care that Diaconu isn’t a world beater, beating anyone one-handed is impressive.

Then I stepped back and looked at it again. I got to thinking that if I had to actually think that hard about it, then it was not as clear cut and simple as it first looked so I looked closer, watched youtube for a few hours and studied the records of both these fighters. I came to the conclusion that Dawson, for me at least, has not proven himself yet. Yes, he looked good against Johnson and Tarver, and yes, he is the only one to hand Tomasz Adamek a professional defeat. But, lets face it, Tarver and Johnson are old, and had to be usurped by the young blood sooner or later, and Adamek hasn’t fought anyone of note., his best win arguably coming over Golota.

Therefore, rather than see this fight as most people are treating it. As Dawson cementing his place as the best in the world. I see this as the next step up the ladder for Chad (anyone touting him to beat Calzaghe back in 07/08 was living in the clouds frankly). A natural progression from beating other novice fighters, and then more experienced fighters who were of no real threat to him, and now he is fighting a relevant, tough opponent of similar experience to himself.

We know Dawson has the makings of a world dominating boxer of the future but, what about Pascal? He’s had less fights than Dawson, though he has been busier since he made his professional début 4 years later than Dawson despite them being the same age therefore in less time has managed to get to the same stage as Dawson who is touted as a great already, and has been for a few years now. I feel Pascal is being heavily underestimated in this fight. We know he can fight, we know he is capable of knocking people out, and we know for sure, especially after the Froch fight, that he is willing and able to stand and trade hard shots with a decent fighter. We also know that he does not quit, even with a dislocated shoulder, he won rounds and ended up winning a lopsided decision over Diaconu. This makes Pascal a very dangerous opponent for anybody.

So there we have it, I am not sure what to expect any more. I know that I am expecting a much better, more explosive and tighter contest than my first impressions led me to believe. Like most I think Dawson definitely has the quality to get past Pascal, or anyone else in the division for that matter, but, I have this niggling feeling in my gut that Pascal is going to ask some serious questions of him. Some of which, I am not entirely sure he will have the answers to. Pascal certainly has less to lose and I feel he will relish his underdog status in this one and is very capable of causing a bit of an upset.

Pascal is in ridiculas shape for this fight, not sure if he will win but he is looking very sharp right now.

  • MadPro818 says:

I see a fairly easy fight for BAD Chad … Pascal is athletic but not as skilled as Chad … Easy boxing lesson and might end up in a late KO

  • j lander says:

    pascal all the way

  • lil mag says:

Chad doesnt have the power to really hurt anyone. Pascal is a strong fighter and will beat Chad. Chad also needs to stop running away fron Tavoris Cloud

  • nick says:

chad will loss fight to pascal not training rigth .to much hanging out.not chad get ko 3 round.

  • calvin says:

No doubt im rooting for pascal on this one, im a huge fan of his, benzo” was saying pascal could walk through dawsons power, but i have to disagree,if you walk on a big guys punch, like dawsons who’s 6″3 your gonna go down.
I feel that pascal has enough “fire in the belly” to rough up dawson and hes quick enough to box with him,he’s gotta break the cycle of these tall rangy guys to take the p**s all night long with their jab staying out of trouble.
If pascal goes in their with the right mentality he can take dawson for sure,he’s still the under dog though.

  • stu says:

if pascal’s shoulder holds up he takes dawson imo.

  • Benzo says:

Dawson has no power, after facing two hard puncher in Froch and Diaconu twice…Pascal will put a lot of pressure, he will come on Dawson like a train. He has full confidence in his chin and knows that Dawson will not be able to hurt him.
I see Pascal win by KO !

  • Mike says:

Both fighters are world class and fast but I think Pascal looks a little faster.I have a feeling Pascal is going to give Dawson a beating!

  • lex_fugitive says:

Pascal definitely isn’t a pushover. This is why I love boxing.

  • Guvnor says:

Pascal on points for me, Dawson hasn’t impressed me that much.
It yet another fight that i beleive is exciting times for boxing. There are some great fights in store for early 2010……..

  • xAUGUSTUSx says:

Everyone forgot that Dawson was ducking Diaconu for 2 years. I personally think Pascal is going to take it.

  • Solini says:

Chads going to clean up this division and go unmentioned unless fighters come up to challenge him pretty much how Bernard Hopkins had 20 title defenses at middleweight but didn’t get any attention until he KO’D Trinidad and De La Hoya both smaller fighters that came up

  • HODGY says:

Must say this a great unbiased article an it seems true to every word. see dawson win 7 rounds to 5

  • The_Ring says:

First, I just wanted to say I think Adamek’s win over Steve Cunningham ranks much higher than his win against Golota.

I think Pascal’s a good boxer but I still think Dawson would take this pretty easily. Glen Johnson is a tough night out for anybody old or not and we’ll see what happens when he takes on Tavoris Cloud.

  • Ukansodoff says:

Dawson is a very good boxer, not world class though, I think i give Chad the upper hand in this one but i certainly wouldnt see it as a shock if he lost.

I think Pascal is looking very comftable at this weight since moving up and is guna give Dawson a tough fight.

  • stevo says:

maybe im missing something but i dont see anything special with dawson, seen pascal 3 or 4 times and been very impressed so i give him a great chance of beating dawson.
