Bute vs. Miranda on April 17th

By Jim Dower: International Boxing Federation super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (25-0, 20 KO’s) will be making his 5th defense of his IBF title on April 17th against super middleweight contender Edison Miranda (33-4, 29 KO’s) at the Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Bute, 29, has mostly dominated since capturing the IBF title in October 2007 with an 11th round stoppage win over Alejandro Berrio.

In October 2008, Bute dodged a bullet when he appeared to be knocked out in the 12th round against challenger Librado Andrade in a fight in which Bute was knocked down in the 12th and was given extra time to get back to his feet. The fight was deeply controversial, yet the results stood. Andrade was forced to fight his way back into another title shot a little over a year later. This time, Andrade was quickly stopped in the 4th round.

Miranda is ranked number #7 by the World Boxing Council super middleweight division, but not at all by the IBF. It’s unclear why Bute is facing Miranda given that the Colombian fighter isn’t ranked in the top 15 by the IBF. There’s very little talent for Bute to face now that the biggest stars in the division are tied up by the Super Six tournament.

That’s actually a good thing for Bute, because he would likely have his hands full if he were forced to fight Arthur Abraham, Carl Froch, Andre Dirrell, Allan Green, Mikkel Kessler, and Andre Ward. Bute might beat some of them, but it’s highly doubtful that he would beat all of them. Bute isn’t a very inside fighter, and is more of a hit and run type boxer. He likes to punch and back away. It’s a style that is frustrating to fight against and somewhat boring to watch.

Bute has problems with his stamina late in his fights and tends to take more punishment the longer his bouts go. He would likely be beaten by Ward, Abraham and Froch. I would give Dirrell, Kessler and Green a good chance of beating him as well.

Bute should do well as long as the Super Six tournament takes place. As soon as it ends, there’s going to be a tremendous amount of pressure to match Bute up against the Super Six series winner. If Bute doesn’t take that fight, he will take a lot of heat by boxing fans. However, if Bute does face the winner, I give him very little chance to beat the series winner.

Miranda has a ton of power, but his hand speed just isn’t there. He’ll struggle against Bute and either get knocked out by him or lose a lopsided 12 round decision. I expect Miranda to lump Bute up a little before the fight is over, but he’s going to struggle to land against Bute, because of the Romanian’s hit and run style of fighting.

Miranda’s best chance of winning is if he can put an enormous amount of pressure on Bute from the outset and try to hit with something big. Miranda has to load up with everything he throws if he wants to win, because he won’t get a lot of chances to land because Bute will be backing away a lot at any hint of aggression from Miranda. This could end up being a real stinker to watch.

Mr. Dower, i’m sorry but you don’t know anything about boxing. Come on, Bute boring to watch! He’s the BEST in the supermiddle weight division. The only boxer involved in the supersix abble to match with Bute his King Arthur Abraham.

Why Bute always fight in Canada? Because his the champ and he lives there. So Street fight, can you explain why Abraham always fight in Germany? Is he a cheater?

Good day everyone, I think that the Bute-Miranda fights will show to the world what is Bute all about. I predict a KO in the 5th or 6th round. Bute is ready to step up again. And by the way Bute is really an exiting boxer to watch.

bute would do very well gainst the guys in the super 6.

& that first fight against andrade may have been controversial…but the result was right…& all the technicalities were right (ie. he legitimately beat the count…the count went past the final bell so he didn’t have to be in a position to defend himself…so he won…the ref charging across the ring to deal with andrade didn’t matter…the fight is over as soon as he gets to his feet…& he was on his feet when the ref went to andrade…he more than deserved the win too).

nice to see bute made a good choice when he rejected the super 6. this is a joke fight. miranda has already shown he doesn’t cut it at world level.

Nice that bute is getting attention across the border, but for you to think that he wouldnt match up any of the super six is simply ridiculous. I doubt you have watched a lot of the bute fight to say that he has stamina problems, and gets punishment when the bouts go all the way! I have been folowing him for awhile now ad i one thing you gots to know about bute is that he gets stronger as the fight goes along, it always taks him a good 4 rounds before he adapts and over work his opponents with meticulous body and combinations. He did, fell short in the first andrade fight but that was a mistake he clearly understood he did. The crowd was wild and he did want to give a show while he had the fight in his hands. But whatever, it s thing of the past now, the second fight proved you wrong anyway. There is clearly some good figthers in the super six and itt wouldnt be a walk in the park for bute, but trust me so wouldnt it be for his opponents as well. Abraham and ward are both akward fighters and hard to predict an outcome, but all 4 others i believe strongly would end up falling shor to bute! dirrel s got the speed but so does bute with a bit more power and general better ring knowledge, kessler is textbook, froch doesnt match up defensively and get outsmart, and green!??? come on! Although styles makes fights, once bute fight miranda, it ll be easier for you to judge him against green, ward or abraham, which you know what the outcome of their fight was!

  • Benz0 says:

Bute is a very good technician with very good power, especially to the body. He has a great defence, moves very well…but not too much like Dirrell against Froch for example. The 168 division is a vey good one with a lot of great athlete but Bute is right there among the best of that division…the winner of the super six, Abraham or Ward probably, will face Bute and it will not be an easy fight for them and for Bute.
But if Bute gets by Miranda and Pavlik gets by…probably Martinez on the 17 april on HBO, we will have a Bute-Pavlik somewhere this summer…that’s what HBO wants.
By the way, your saying that Froch would likely beat Bute…believe me, your wrong on this.

    Dower and ElCondor,

You guys need to get an eye exam… and a stopwatch…
Bute is the real deal. The only reason the first Andrade bout went to the scorecards, is the fact Bute forgot about his most devastating assets(perhaps because Andrade`s protector was (way) too high)his beautiful hook to the liver and his uppercut to the sternum.

Bute-Andrade 2 was how it should have been in the first place. He has the most impressive knock out punches of the division! IMO

  • ElCondor says:

Let Bute fight Andrade one more time, and I will believe. In his first fight with Andrade – the referee and the judges were either asleep or simply deadset on handing Bute a victory. Not fair! When Bute went down, the referee waited at least 30 seconds before beginning the count! Jesus almighty!
