Berto vs. Quintana on April 10th: Will Carlos take Andre’s title?

By Jim Dower: Former World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Carlos Quintana (27-2, 21 KO’s) will be facing unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto on April 10th, at the BankAtlantic Center, in Sunrise, Florida. By far, this is the biggest fight of Berto’s six year pro career. Berto has been matched fairly softly throughout his career with arguably his hardest match coming against the light hitting Luis Collazo last year in January. Berto recently beat light welterweight Juan Urango by a 12 round decision in May 2009, which was Berto’s second fight against a light welterweight in the past year.

Of the three title defenses Berto has made while holding down the WBC welterweight title, two of the three defenses have come against light welterweights. Thankfully, Berto broke that pattern with Quintana. Berto was supposed to have fought Shane Mosley in January, but Berto pulled out of the fight due to an earthquake that struck Haiti, which killed some of Berto’s family members.

Berto looked really poor in beating Collazo last year, winning the fight by a comfortable decision on the judges’ scorecards but in reality struggling badly against him. Quintana, 33, is a superb boxer, who moves well and is hard to hit. Quintana could give Berto more problems than he can handle if his chin holds out. Quintana gave Paul Williams his first and only loss of his career in beating him by a 12 round decision in February 2008.

Williams would later avenge the defeat by stopping Quintana in the 1st round four months later in June 2008. Quintana was also stopped in the 5th round by December 2006. However, apart from those loses, Quintana is very hard to beat. Berto likely won’t be able to out-box a skilled fighter like Quintana so you can look for Berto to come out slugging to try and get Quintana out of there as early as possible.

The longer this fight goes, the better the chance that Quintana pounds out a decision and takes Berto’s title. In the past three fights, Berto, at one time a slugger, has become a hit and hold type fighter. Berto formerly had a crowd pleasing style of fighting with lots of flashy combinations. Now, however, he tends to punch and grab all the time, making him hard to watch.

That style has been effective against Berto’s last three opponents, but none of them have the moment that Quintana will be showing against Berto. If Berto is to win this fight, he’s going to have to open up with his offense and throw a lot of punches. Quintana won’t be standing in front of him, so he won’t be able to rush him and grab like he’s been doing. The good thing is if Quintana wins we’ll finally have an interesting champion. Berto hasn’t been an exciting fighter since he won the title in 2008.

Quintana stopped Jesse Feliciano in the 3rd round in December. Quintana looked very good in that fight in reducing Feliciano, a slugger like Berto, into a harmless punching bag.

El indio would teach him how to box, and when berto feel his leftpunch he would like to get out of the ring. Quintana by KO

  • eddie o says:

berto will be faster and have a better defence than ever before ,he is sparing with a kid from rochester a middleweight up and comer willie monroe jr who has the fastest hands in the game that is a lefty, not a big fan of berto but will get the win on the 10th

  • rodney cooper says:

Ha this board is crazy berto is going to kill this guy he wont make it to the final bell berto by ko quintana just thought he got beat up by cotto wait till after this fight.

  • BoxingFan1 says:

Quintana poses a real threat. He seems to be more experienced than Berto, but Berto is hungry and looking to prove that his Haiti trip was sincere and not a tactic to skip out on Mosley. So I think Berto will pull up a great fight, just off of shear will and determination and hopefully the muscles don’t weigh him down too much in the later rounds. Berto by decision.

  • Anthony 20 says:

I think Berto wins by late stoppage. Should be a good fight though

  • Bob says:

I can’t wait for Saul Alverez to get a hold of the Jr welter Wieght Champ who is holding the Welter Wieght Belt for a real Champion.

  • Solini says:

Berto is interesting in the fact he has a middleweights body type but not tall enough so he’s stuck at welterweight, I wouldn’t mind seeing him at 154. But all that aside I don’t think a fight with Quintana was a smart one. Quintana is used to fighters like Berto and unless Berto does a lot of damage early I see Quintana weathering the storm to win a decision or possibly getting the KO. Berto should seriously consider getting a different physical trainer, he’s too cut up. After about 5 rounds all that muscle starts to wear you down. Big muscles don’t translate to big ko’s in boxing.

@ Duke, how in the hell was williams weight drained for the firts fight but not for the second fight?make some sense man.Besides williams can still make 147!!!!!!!!

  • EL Cocorote says:

Quintana will ko him by the 9th

  • EL Cocorote says:

    @ Duke.
Um, Weight drained Williams? The same Williams that koed him the rematch the same Williams that wants and can make 147?!!!!
and julio was a prospect that was “supposed” to be good, but Quintana ended that. Anyway, Quintana will Berto’s ears off, matter of fact Berto will not make it past the 9th.Quintana will go onto, possibly fight mayweather cause we all know pacroid will not fight mAyfathers so he will pick on the easist opponent.-

  • elcuate says:

Well as I have many times seen berto fight he doesn’t have a chance vs a quintana, quintana is used to this kind of fights

  • JE says:

Berto has the speed and power to knock anybody out. when quintana gets hit, he confuses. Berto by KO

  • Pale the Pug says:

i cant stop thinking about how bad berto messed up by pulling out of the mosley fight. everbody gets one moment and that going to be his. i think he have a close fight with quintana and his stock will drop.

  • boxing fan#2 says:

I think berto lost to luis collazo.
Berto is not a champion jet on my book.
He only defeated b+ fighters like forbes or Urango, and by small margin.

  • vrodz says:

Quintana wins this IMO and in convincing fashion.

  • matsuzaka says:

i know him (quintana)can win he got a lot of experience and good boxing.good luck…..

  • MarathonMan1 says:

Berto has stamina issues. Quintana is going to punch him until he runs out of breath. Quintana is a well rounded south paw. He is going to give Berto the biggest challenge in his career. I commend him for his choice. He could have fought a nobody but he didn’t. Much Respect.

  • Duke says:

if berto stands still, he loses. but if he moves, berto should win by decision or knockout. remember that quintana two big wins came against fighters who stood right in front of him. a weight drained williams and joel julio.
