Beristain doesn’t think Marquez should fight Khan right now

By Esteban Garduno: According to an article at Bleacherreport, trainer Nacho Beristain doesn’t think his fighter Juan Manuel Marquez should fight World Boxing Association light welterweight champion right now. Beristain says “He [Marquez] asked me to go with him to Los Angeles to work on the deal for his next fight, that his people [Golden Boy Promotions] want to match him with Khan, but I told him that’s not a fight to be taken lightly, as he [Khan] is very strong, and it’s not a good fight right now, because he [Marquez] has not fully recovered from the Mayweather fight, which was just brutal.”

Beristain is right. This isn’t a good fight for the 36-year-old Marquez to take right now. Khan is a light welterweight, and Marquez hasn’t looked good in his recent move up to lightweight. Marquez looked absolutely horrible in his last fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September. Marquez gained weight to make the fight at welterweight, and he looked slow and not good carrying the weight.

Beristain continues on the subject of Khan-Marquez, saying “[Marquez] should look for a different opponent, one in his own weight class, and he should not be exploited again. Khan is a junior welter and that’s where they want to make the fight; I think Juan Manuel deserves to bow out like a true champion, and not by being anyone else’s stepping stone.”

I totally agree. It looks like Marquez, a great fighter, is being used as a sacrificial lamb to make Khan, a light welterweight, look good instead of having Khan man up and fight someone his own size like knockout artist Marcos Maidana. That’s the fight Khan should be taking and for some reason, he’s not. Marquez is too good to be used in this way. Marquez is a great fighter, whereas Khan is someone who appears to have major flaws in his game which could potentially limit him to being a paper champion during his career unless his chin gets better as he ages. Usually a fighter’s chin gets worse, not better, as they age.

why r they even considering this fight? all we need is another mis macth waste of money fight. i think all these fighters should fight the top contenders and others champ in their wieght classes. all these years of whatching PBF box all ive seen is someone who fights fihters who r past their time or not a threat. lets see some good fights get put together so we can start giving credit to fighters where its due

People who say “he should fight maidiana what a joke blah blah blah” need to remember something… Kotelnik outboxed him…

Since when was boxing two guys stood still having a go at each others chin? Khan won’t win many fights by knockouts but by points, yes he does have a weak chin but that doesn’t mean he’s bad… It means he should be on the defensive.

Since when was maidana better than marquez? Marquez lost to one of the best! Floyd is no bum you can’t argue about his talent. In my eyes I see marquez winning, would like khan to win (met the guy in Manchester a few times) but Marquez is a masterfull fighter.

    Esteban,

This is the same JMM that PBF destroyed at a higher weight and you guys defend Floyd. Now that it’s at a lower weight to fight Khan, who is nowhere close to PBF caliber, it’s a stepping stone fight he shouldn’t take? Give me a break, JMM is done, let him fight Pacquiao again at full WW and let Manny retire that fool.

    MARQUEZ BEAT PAC TWICE.

  • steve says:

why dont khan go bak down to lightweight and fight marquez for his lightweight title

  • Poor noynoys says:

The thing with Ruiz-Tua and Khan-Prescott is apples and oranges.

Tua clobbered Ruiz with a beautiful shot, then absolutely devastated him with that hook as Ruiz was on his way down. There was no way anyone could have gotten up from that 1-2.

Prescott is no pillow-thrower, the kid can bang. But the fact that Khan was wobbled by a jab…that is chinny. No way you can call it anything else.

Want more evidence? The fact that he took a mandatory in Salita (a pillow thrower) and then promptly ducked his second mandatory in Maidana (a brick thrower), says it all.

Khan’s chin is suspect, he knows it, Roach knows it, GBP knows it.

  • Hassan says:

Marquez and Khan is a perfect fight. If Khan wins his status in America will rise dramatically. whereas if Marquex wins he will show his versility at claiming another world title at light welterweight. which will be his first title at the weight. It will be closer than the Barrera-Khan fight, However hardcore boxing fans expect Khan to win.

  • Bob says:

Ness I agree, Berto should be stripped of his title for not making a title defense agnist a welter weight. This belt was handed to him 2 and half years ago when he fought someone who was ranked 30 by the WBC

  • Mike says:

    with him I mean Marquez!

  • Mike says:

    JMM

Marquez gave Pac everything he could handle and maby more! I enjoy watching Pac fight as he is very exciting but the fact remains that FMJ played with him! I know styles make fights but it’s hard for me to imagine Manny taking out a fighter who slapped around like a baby the biggest challenge Manny has faced as a fighter.Marquez simply gave Manny all he could possibly handle and bairly won both times! I can’t see Manny all of a sudden beating FMJ at all!

  • bangus banger says:

Marquez should go back at lightweight. He’s more effective and is one of the top fighters at that division.

  • lifeinthering says:

    Khan is garbage.
He ducks his mandatory fight for a fight where his opponentt will have a disadvantag nmoving up in wieght.

Problem is marquez is gonna catch khan and knock him out khan is not pbf khan will take a lot of damage and he is no pac so he won’t be able to throw and escape without getting hurt.

    Lifeinurass,
That’s awsome I’m guessing pbf told you that right?when you guys were hanging out? Haha gtfo who is talking to you? Lmao

  • Ijo Dep Utah says:

Marquez added weight makes it difficult to move around, his hand speed will be slower. Against Amir, who has height and reach advantage and is a natural welterweight. I don’t see him winning this fight. This will be another lost record for him.

  • Paul Mason says:

If Khan is so good why is he gettng marquez to come up to fight him, be a man and fight Maidana if you are so good. Problem is, evertime you think of Amir Khan you think of him slouched in the corner after being dropped by Prescott

  • bruno says:

What that really means is we want more money.

  • JMM says:

Poor Marquez who wants to follow Pacquiao’s footsteps. He accepted Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s challenge just to be outboxed and exploited. Such a pity that He fights Boy but rejects to fight Amir Khan. What’s the point now?! Cannot follow Pacquiao anymore.

  • JMM says:

This clearly shows that Juan Manuel Marquez is not a Manny Pacquiao. Floyd Mayweather Jr. exploited him to be a stepping stone in his comeback from a short retirement. Pacquiao surpasses all expectations and Juan Manuel Marquez should stay in lightweight division until he retires.

  • Ness says:

Show Marquez the Money!!!!!! He has already proven himself in the sport.

GDP is terried when they think of what could happen if Maidana gets one clean hit on Khan’s chin… and it will happen folks.

Again, another of example of raising boxing star having his pick on the “old and smaller warrirs” bag.

Back in the days, once you became champion, you fought to defend your title…. today, you manuever yourself to a belt and then decide that you still more seasoning before fighting someone worthy…. can anyone say Berto!

  • Mike says:

A chin is a chin is a chin, period! If one has a glass one,it will stay that way.The thing is just because a fighter gets caught cold and is knocked out does NOT mean it is glass. It may be that nhe didn’t see the punch or whatever.People used to say John Ruiz had a glass jaw after Tua dropped him hard in the first round. Now anybody with a half a brain knows Ruiz’s jaw is NOT made of glass.

  • Mike says:

    Shut up

You don’t think Marquez is a great fighter? LOLO
You know nothing about boxing then! LOL

  • jawless says:

I cant belive this khan is a joke why does everyone think he somthing special he shoudent ever be a champion.

  • shut up says:

marque a great fighter?!! what a joke!!

  • Sandy says:

Khan is just using marquez as a stepping stone! there is no way kahn can win a younger fighter thats why he goes after much older fighters! amir khan is just a fraud!

  • angel says:

this is great news if true. so glad they saw through team khan and their shameful use of smaller men to make king khan look good. fight someone your own size khan. im just sorry maidana didnt insist on fighting him because he will never get a shot at khan again

  • Poor noynoys says:

Khan has yet to prove he can take a solid punch. Unti he does, I still consider him as incredibly chinny. I don’t think a couple of years is going to make that much of a difference. The other mitigating factor is that Prescott did a Tito-Vargas on him, and few fighters ever really recover from that kind of a beatdown, especially young fighters (look at Vargas’ career after the Trinidad fight – his punch resistance was crap).

  • asif says:

Marquez should go back to lightweight or retire. I think that khan should fight madaina and then fight the winner of the fight of bradley against valero. While this is happening the winner of devon alexander vs juan urango will cause an ultimate showdown of who is the jr welterweight king. If that were to happen jr welterweight would be the best division. Lets face it the only welterweight fight people want to see is pacman vs floyd!. Young people should box young people not old timers

  • Glass Joe says:

Marquez is overrated really lost both fights to Pacquiao if it wasn’t for bad scoring in the first fight.

Kahn would dominate him. He’s too small no power at 140… it would look like the Barerra fight

  • Poor noynoys says:

I don’t think the Mayweather fight took anything out of him…more of a frustrating fight than a brutal one.

That said, though, I don’t think Marquez looks all that good against Khan. Granted the boy has a humpty-dumpty chin, but he is big, tall, and strong.

Marquez needs to be patient and go back to being that swift counterpuncher he was in the lower weights. If he tries the same go-forward strategy he used against Mayweather, Khan is going to rough him up.

  • jerry says:

so marquez’s coach thinks khan is too strong and will win? hmm… that wont give marquez alot of confidence having his coach say that

  • MarathonMan1 says:

Marquez ko’d Casa and Diaz. He lost to Floyd but I wouldn’t say he was damaged. Maybe out classed but not damaged. He is going to give Khan all he can handle. JMM is dangerous don’t sleep on his skills….

  • bruno says:

Boxing is about money not what is right or wrong. Boxers have managers who guide their charges the most lucrative way. If Maidana had wanted the Khan fight to happen now, he could have made it happen. What the public want to see and what happens is guided by management. Every boxer probably thinks he is better than he is and someone has to guide them. Who truly is the best is always tantalising in front of you but doesn’t happen until the price is right. Thats management for you.

  • weslad says:

marquez might be aging but he,s sure as hell still dangerous,,if Khan comes through i hope people will give him the respect due,,anybody who can go 12 rounds with floyd is not over the hill,,,,were gonna see just how good amir now,,,then im prety sure maidana will be next, thats fights gotta happen,

  • Doc Holiday says:

I’m not sold on this Khan cat…neither Valero but I hold Valero in a higher regard than Khan! It’s funny that these guys are already mentioned in the same sentence as PBF and Pacman…it’s silly and shameful!!!

  • santiperes says:

If he is good enough to fight Mayweather and he showed it by taking him to 12 rounds, he is good enough to KO Khan.

  • vinny says:

I agree Khan should grow some cajones and fight Maidana.

  • vinny says:

They made a mistake by moving up 17 lbs to get used by PBF for his return to the ring and now Nacho is being cautious at having Marquez move up again in weight to fight out of his weight class. Marquez is a great fighter, but he didn’t have the power and speed he usually has when he moved up in weight. I think Marquez should listen and stick to his weight class and fight the best there.

  • wayner says:

marquez cant make the weight he is the best light weight out there. khan should get some balls and fight maidana. enough said marquez is one of my favorite fighters but he should stay at the super feather light weight division…

  • 2pacfather says:

amir is ready for marquez screw nacho enough said………..
