Arum: Over 30,000 tickets already sold for Pacquiao-Clottey

By Chris Williams: With little more than a month to go for the March 13th clash between World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao and challenger Joshua Clottey, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum is saying “we’ve sold well over 30,000” tickets to the fight, according to Boxing Talk. That’s a phenomenal number for a bout that figures to be mismatch. Clottey, 32, isn’t well known by casual boxing fans, and he’s not exactly been a world beater during his career, losing to Antonio Margarito, Carlos Baldomir and recently to Miguel Cotto.

The tickets appear to be getting purchased on droves by boxing fans who want to see Pacquiao only, even if he’s not fighting an interesting opponent like Floyd Mayweather or Shane Mosley. There are some estimates that the Pacquiao-Clottey fight could end up selling as many as 65,000 tickets by the time the fight takes place. That would be an incredible number for the fight, which will be taking place at the Dallas Cowboy stadium, in Arlington, Texas.

Historically, fights that have taken place in stadiums and sold in big numbers of have been competitive ones with two famous fighters going at it. In this case, Pacquiao pretty much is taking part in a stay busy fight against a good but far from great fighter in Clottey. While Clottey is ranked number #1 by the WBO, he might be perhaps the 10th or 11th best fighter in the division, if that.

However, if boxing fans are willing to purchase tickets just to see Pacquiao fight, there’s no point in him having to take risks by facing dangerous fighters like Mayweather and Mosley, both of whom would have a good chance of beating him.

Arum promotes Pacquiao and stands behind his fighter in regards to the random blood tests that sunk Manny’s fights against Mayweather. Arum says “We [Pacquiao] have no absolute problem with random testing, as long as it’s urinalysis, and as long as it’s done by a legitimate boxing commission.”

The problem here is that Mayweather wants random blood tests for a fight between him and Pacquiao to take place, not just urine tests. Mayweather feels that the blood tests are the best method for checking for performance enhancing drugs. However, Mayweather needs help with the Nevada Athletic Commission, who only mandates that urine be checked for drugs, if he wants to try and push for random blood testing to be taken before a fight against Pacquiao in the future.

Although Pacquiao and Arum are agreeable to a certain amount of blood testing to be taken before a fight against Mayweather, both want a cutoff point well before the fight. In the case of his failed fight with Mayweather, Pacquiao wanted the blood tests to stop 24 days before the fight. Mayweather didn’t agree with this number, and countered with 14 days before the fight.

As for the blood testing, Arum says “Blood testing is very dangerous.” He fears that a nurse could “miss the veins” when drawing blood,” causing the fighter’s arm to be sore for several days after the blood draw. Arum also thinks that the urine testing is “even more effective than blood testing.”

Unfortunately, Mayweather doesn’t agree with Arum on this point. It comes down to whether Arum and Pacquiao will give in on these issues. If not, then Arum is going to have to look for someone else other than Mayweather after Pacquiao finishes up with the Clottey fight.

Mayweather is fighting Shane Mosley on May 1st, and if Mayweather wins that fight, Mosley won’t be a good option for Pacquiao for obvious reasons. But then again, Pacquiao is fighting Clottey, who was just beaten in his last fight, so you can’t really rule out Pacquiao fighting Mosley even if Shane loses to Mayweather.

PAC IS ON THE JUICE. HE PUNISHED A GUY WHO AT HIS NATURAL WEIGHT IS 20 POUNDS HEAVIER! HE BEAT THE BREAKS OFF COTTO. IF HE’S NOT ON THE JUICE DRAW BLOOD!

  • commonsense says:

@setup, it was YOUR comment about them being golf buddies. I was simply agreeing with you.

  • Rufus says:

30K tickets sold? to whom, ticket brokers? the best tickets all over the stadium are still available from StubHub, TicketNet, TicketOnline. There r great seats still avail. from Ticket Master at face value.

  • commonsense says:

I made a typo. I meant to say golf buddy, not gold buddy

  • commonsense says:

Setup, USADA is a gold buddy of DLH? What a surprise.

  • SIG357 says:

Hey Chris Williams, get your record straight. Clottey is currently ranked in Welterweight no.5 out of 1475 worldwide. If you dont understand boxing and its ranking, you should not even be writing anything about boxing.

    And since you said:

However, if boxing fans are willing to purchase tickets just to see Pacquiao fight, there’s no point in him having to take risks by facing dangerous fighters like Mayweather and Mosley, both of whom would have a good chance of beating him.

I wonder what you would say if Pacquiao fights Ivan Calderon.

So let say, man, quit writing about boxing since i could tell you DO NOT understand it. I seen quite a few of your article and NONE of them actually makes sense at all.

If Mosley or FLoyd materialize against Pacquiao, i’ll email you and I would want you bet “everything” you have that neither of them will beat Pacquiao. Everything!!! Ok Chris Willaims.

  • blogcosep says:

Yeah!.. I would expect this will be sold out..

  • Anonymous says:

Wouldn’t it be great if Mosely beats Floyd and afterwards, Floyd says that he lost because the blood testing so close to the fight made him weak! ha ha ha!

  • justthefacts says:

Money-Mayweather, Mosely was not available when the Mayweather fight broke up. He had a fight scheduled with Berto. It was only after he signed with Clottey that Mosley became available. Mayweather at first tried to make a fight with Maglinaggi or Matthew Hatton, but considering the outrage that the fans expressed over those choices not matter how hard he tried to spin it, forced him to take the Mosley fight. Belive me he was certainly not happy about it. I think they are both crazy if they draw blood from each other on the day of the fight. Be careful what u wish for….

  • BRITTLE HANDS WACKWEATHER says:

All you PACMAN HATERS…If your taking the time to read this article and leave a comment, well then Pacman fan in the closet!!! JUST COME OUT and tell the truth. Pacman is the best thing that EVER happened to BOXING!!!! PEACE!

  • Mayfeather says:

Jerry Jones configured 40,000 tickets. They still have 10,000 tickets short. So, they will probably sell the remaining tickets in discounts or given them to Dallas comboys as complimentary gifts.

Now, even they have many tickets sold as reported, it is doubtful how much they can sell the PPV’s.

I don’t think they can outsell the Mayfeather-Mosley fight.

If that’s the case, Mayweather will boast again as PPV king. He will again demand a high share demand against Pac which Arum won’t agree.
Floyd’s future higher demand of revenue sharing and Olympic style of drug tests will surely kill the possibility of PAC-MAYFEATHER fight.

  • Anonymous says:

Why even mention Floyd in the article. That’s old news. Everyone’s moved on and the fact is Pacquaio don’t need Mayweather, and the fans don’t care either and that’s a fact. The numbers don’t lie…

  • slimmm says:

Why does anyone want to waste their money watchg this mismatch

  • Bobby Bagoong says:

The Manny vs Joshua fight will be a total sellout and there will be more seats available if there is a demand. I wouldn’t be surprised if it goes all the way up to 60,000 sold. However, Floyd vs Mosley will do well. Just like JMM vs Floyd were they sold out but many of the tickets where given away or sold at bargain basement price (true).

Recent rumors are circulating that Floyd Jr is demanding random blood testing to those fans who will enter MGM Grand to watch his fight live. Floyd wants to make sure his fans or audiences are free of PED’s or drugs, he wants a clean audience. By the way, the random blood testing exclude 3 people, Floyd himself, Floyd Sr and especially Roger Mayweather with his rotten “meth” teeth.

  • Internet Doctor Degree says:

I don’t think blood testing 2 or 1 day before the fight is safe for either boxers. Just common sense, try drawing blood and go run a couple of miles and let see what will happen to you. For boxers they will be pounded heavily on their head and I think that will have a fatal results. I am not a doctor but I can already see what could be the end result. Albeit no doctors will sign to that kind of proposition for their license will be on line. It could end somebody’s life even it is only a pint. Blood coming out from wound during the fight is way different from drawn blood before the fight. It’s okay for Mosley-Mayweather fight to do those nonsense for they are too dumb to understand the science of it.

  • HoustonSportsFan says:

@ Wanted. Marion Jones also didn’t get caught by testing. ANd she didn’t get caught by Olympic style testing.

  • no2drugs says:

“arum: blood test is very dangerious, u can miss a vein” is this the best bs answer paqs team come up with. lol what a joke. kids say NO TO DRUGS.

  • justthefacts says:

This whole blood testing issue is a ruse by Floyd to disrupt Pac’s training camp. If there were a non invasive way of detecting the same drugs, May would still want the blood testing. Why? Because he did his homework and he knows how averse Pac is to this kind of testing and he wants to screw with him. May wnats the blood testing only because he knows how much Pac does not like it, because it is INVASIVE. Pac already agreed to be urine tested randomly andunlmitedc with no cut off date zand do 3 blood tests as well. Enoughalready.

IF Pac and May ever fight (very doubtful) and IF Pac beats May and IF Pac beats him convincingly, say by devasting KO like Hatton or old fashion beat down like Cotto, can u really picture May being a gracious loser and giving Pac his due. No of course not. He will say that Pac must have been on some brand new PHillipine style dessigner PED that is undetectable with todays tests, even blood tests. OR he will make Pac take a DNA test to prove he is human and not an alien from another planet.

  • mp productions says:

You think Floyd can do that well in Dallas?

Oh wait… Floyd can’t fight in Texas. Oops.

  • roys says:

Iam on a roll on predicting things, I say this fight will outsold the mosley and floyd fight in money collected in high paying seats, and ppv sales watch ,floyd last fight they had to delay fight and was selling in cheap theater ,
on another though did they have the mosley and floyd heavy advertise at the pro bowl that what GBP wanted.

  • roys says:

who need floyd,if he going to be a hard head and dont want to fight,be a boring fight anyway, the money is with pac ,only reason I would watch the mosley and floyd fight is my man mosley.

  • pacROID says:

Clottey is a second-tier fighter who was already beaten by an opponent pacROID pummeled. As long as pacROID takes his juice, he’ll whip Clottey. Bottom line? Here it is: pacROID is a puy and a cheater, and Boob Arum is a lying snake. Arum is claiming that blood tests are dangerous — in essence, he’s discouraging a medical procedure that can literally save lives. So some people may die. So what. Better for Boob Arum to protect his cash cow pacROID so that pacROID can continue to juice himself up and claim to be a great fighter. Protecting a doper is what’s really important here. Manny pacROID and Boob Arum: two scumbags who were made for each other.

  • Jonathan says:

    @ Chris Williams

Do you even watch boxing or are you just another ignorant writer jumping on the Pacquiao bandwagon. Clottey is a very dangerous fighter and he has a real shot at pulling the upset. He has fought and hung in there and even came close to beating some of the better welter weights of the last few years. You can argue that he beat both Margarito and Cotto. He also beat Judah; a very dangerous fighter for anyone. In my opinion Clottey should only have one defeat on his record.

He also fought Margarito and Cotto when Mayweather has continued to avoid fights with either man even when Margarito wasn’t suspected of cheating. You should give Clottey some credit because it is a very real possibility that Margarito was fighting him with loaded gloves and I think he still pulled it out against Margarito. All of this considered makes Clottey a very dangerous fighter for Pacquiao. So take this into account before you foolishly drink the media cool aid and demonstrate to your readers that you have no mind of your own and all you do is regurgitate the same old garbage that is spouted by the main stream media that has no real knowledge of the great sport of boxing.

  • Jeckyl says:

30,000 tix and counting, I can’t imagine how far Manny’s popularity goes. I’d like to see if Floyd can top this kind of popularity. It’s global, what a waste of megabucks, you should be making twice the amount you can take home, a PPV rights, a recognition to be a better fighter than Manny. But, now you have to wait, after Clottey, maybe Berto or even Margarito. Your fans will be wandering if you really, truly are a better fighter amongst them, Mr. Floyd.

  • Sabembe Mawatu says:

@lacem up: Mosley was not available yet when Manny was switching to other opponent.

IF Arum and Pacquiao representative kept negotiating with Mayweather they wasted their time because Mayweather was obviously playing delaying tactics.

I think you better understand the whole issue.

Anyway, when Pacquiao wins over Clottey, its either Mayweather or Mosley will be Pacquiao’s opponent. Just relax and wait.

  • dagohoy says:

    clotty & pacquiao vs mosley & mayweather…lets get ready 2 RUMMMMMMbolllllol…

  • mario says:

Omg clottey lost to baldomir in 1999 lol he was like 21 years old n it was a DQ not a decision lost

  • Buck says:

Why do you write an article about Pacquiao/Clottey but talk about Mayweather/Pacquiao???? ENOUGH!!!

Focus on the Clottey fight! There are a lot of tickets sold in Cowboy Stadieum. If I were there I would go to. The question is how many PPV sales will there be?

That is the question….Mayweather/Mosely will be HUGE in comparison.

  • CHIM_CHUMP says:

    lacem up:

talk to your boy instead … your boy is a welterweight who wants to fight light welterweights….. He never wanted to fight Mosley… he just had no other option at this stage as everyone around him knows his antics….

Your boy is bigger and can face Williams but he said publicly that he is too big for him… What a guy to stand for a double standard cu&t.

Ohh wait.. On May 1st ..before the bell sounds your boy will be being on his pants and rattling in fear as he is going to face Sugar Shane who will make him look like a twat!!!

  • Rico says:

@ lacem up…dude make no mistake Josh clottey is probably the most dangerous opponent the great pacman has ever faced to date..after Mar13 those who, like you, know very little of clottey will know who he is……

  • lacem up says:

maybe pacman will give us pacman vs. morales 4 next !! haha .. who cares about the clottey fight .. just the bob arum marketing machine working ..he suposed to be the p4p the best and he takes this fight … if he dont want mayweather then he should of taken on mosley or williams or others …his people protecting him AGAIN !! manny looks great fighting statues dont he ..ill save my money ..when he mans up and beats may or mos. or williams ill get off his back…

  • Rico says:

Chris Williams…after Mar13 the whole world will know who Joshua clottey is..nuff said!!!

  • Daniel says:

This may be Pac’s last few fights. So better watch that Tazmanian Devil live while there’s still a chance. I missed the Tyson fights before.

  • PEDRO says:

Of course it will be sold out! The tickets are cheap. Much better than MGM. I get to checkout that stadium. I can make money of it if I change my mind.

  • Melo says:

At the end of the day, we like to be entertained. Pac is the man! This will be a bloody fight.

  • Sophocles says:

According to Stub Hub and another ticket vendor, there are only about 2,000 tickets left of the original 40K slate, that’s ridiculous. If there was even a little debate about who’s the biggest draw in the sport- it’s been answered emphatically. Clottey is a very good, tough, technically sound fighter… but no one outside of the boxing community/fans knows who he is, Pacquiao is drawing in the crowds singehandedly.

As for the blood testing issue- I agree that it should be a commission mandated practice, no athlete should be dictating testing procedures, that’s ridiculous. If the Mayweather clan feels they have irrevocable proof that blood testing is superior to urine testing (Boxing, the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, basically all professional sports… and the USADA ironically enough would disagree), then they would lobby the NSAC to change its present drug testing protocol. I mean, Floyd is out to ‘change sports’ as he said, right? It wasn’t just a convenient way to stall on negotiations, right?

    GO pacman ur number 1

  • concerned in LA says:

Whoa! sorry Clottey losed to Cotto-I saw the fight & yeah he beat up Cotto and lose, right what got into me?

  • concerned in LA says:

Clottey beat Cotto and Cotto beat Mosley, but none of this makes any sense to the experts. Pac is just fighting the worst of the bunch because he’s a ducker & has no business knowledge, yeah (experts).

  • Jason L says:

Hell,Judah lost to Baldomir and Floyd STILL fought him.If it didn’t matter to Floyd then, why does it matter now?

  • HUH? says:

Clottey 10th or 11th best fighter in the division? Mosley, Pacman, Mayweather, Cotto, Berto Who’s next? Margarito? Collazo?

  • punchtotheface says:

Another argument. I thought you were actually going to promote the pacquiao/clottey fight….NOT!
