Abraham vs. Dirrell to take place at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit – News
By Scott Gilfoid: Whatever chance that former International Boxing Federation middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (31-0, 25 KO’s) had in beating American Andre Dirrell (18-1, 13 KO’s) effectively disappeared as of today when it was announced that their stage 2 Super Six bout will be taking place at the Joe Louis Arena, in Detroit, Michigan. The significance of this is that the 26-year-old Dirrell comes from Flint, Michigan, which is roughly only 68 miles away from Detroit, a little over an hour away by automobile.
Dirrell, a 2004 Olympic Bronze Medalist for the United States, is in a must win situation in this fight. For him to have any chance in making it to the semi finals in the Super Six tournament, he must beat Abraham. Thankfully, Dirrell has pretty much every advantage in this fight – youth, hand speed, mobility, height, reach and possibly power.
The only thing that Abraham has going for him is a slight edge in experience. I would say it was a big edge for Abraham, but he’s faced a lot of fighters that I consider to be inferior while holding down the IBF middleweight title from 2005 to 2009. This fight will be a huge step up for Abraham, and it will be interesting to see how he does when facing an opponent that can actually fight. My guess is that Abraham will be hopelessly outclassed and will lose by either a lopsided 12 round decision or possibly a stoppage by the 9th or 10th rounds.
On the undercard, light middleweight contender Ronald Hearns (23-1, 18 KO’s), the son of boxing great Tommy Hearns, will be fighting against a still to be determined opponent.
Dirrell fans – or fans of Abraham – they can purchase tickets to the fight for the process of $175, $125, $100, $50 and $25. In comparison to some fights in Las Vegas between so-called mega talent, these prices are quite reasonable indeed.

This game was a humiliation for Dirrell and the only way he could come out of it was to fake his fall and act like he was a victim. The referee was bought by Dirrell’s people, because it was very obvious that he was on Dirrell’s side. I have recorded this game and have watched it over and over and this game was a joke. Arthur is the king and will stay one for the rest of his life. Dirrell will never be a fighter like Arthur. Dirrell is a joke to the boxing world. He should have been the one to be disqualified, because he does not have any skills that is why he had asked to fight in him hometown….
I agree that Dirrell is amzingly talented and has huge potential. Irrelevant of what happens in this tournament I am sure we will see more of Dirrell in very competitive fights.
That being said. He may have all the advantages EXCEPT power. Arthur out powers Dirrell at every punch. Plus the mobility is less of a factor since Arthur always boxes in a peek-a-boo style (see all his fights and even that against Taylor). When you get in his range he opens up and fluries or clicks combinations. I personally think that Dirrell needs to be careful, if she over does the mobility he will AGAIN look like he is running and may get a bad decision because of that.
Also the comment that Arthur has not face good boxers is somewhat unfounded. He faced Edison Pantera Miranda when he was in his PRIME. He broke his jaw.
Lastly, I would like to restate that I like the article but as usual Boxing News 24, seems to have a very visible bias for American fighters, europeans never seem to be enough for them or canadians for that matter (i.e. Lucian bute)
Direll will have the home advantage. I still do not believe Direll will knock out Abraham. Abraham is a strong fighter and will come prepared. Direll will win a decision.
Arthur Abraham to win the tournament,he,s class.I cant beleive he is being written off.His pressure is very calculated and his defence is excellent, that makes him very dangerous in my book.
How does Abraham not have a chance?!? Wow, I wonder if Mr. Gilford could be suffering from the early stages of dementia. Dirrel could very well win, but to write Abraham off just because its in Detroit is absurd. Carlos Baldomir beat the undisputed welterweight champion in the champ’s hometown. Then he beat Gatti, in Gatti’s backyard. Abraham will be able to deal with the crowd, that is the least of his worries.
Something here doesn’t seem to be right. Why did they chose Detroit if they can’t even sell enough tickets to cover the expenses? I much as I hape to say this, I think Gary Shaw and the Direll’s team are up to something no good.
Dirrel’s one fan will turn up maybe. He walks the walk, talks the talk and then runs and clinches and complains to the ref if he gets hit.
Nobody in Detroit could afford a ticket. It’s all gehetto it’s like having a fight in Watts.
The only reason that the tickets sold out so quick in Cali was because there’s allota Armenians living in LA.
I don’t think there’s going to be 19,000 Germans or Armenians going to the fight so that leaves u with only 2,000 tickets being sold for the fight.
I doubt if there are 21,000 Dirrell fans in the whole world, nevermind in the audience for this…well, I don’t wanna call it a fight. I think ‘chase’ will be more appropriate given Dirrell’s tendency to sprint.
If you take the S off NEWS your left with NEW.
This is the 2nd time youve told us the fight will be at Detroit in as many days. So whats NEW about telling us the 2nd time?
I HOPE DIRRELL WILL NOT QUITE BOXING AFTER HE LOSE BADLY FROM THE KING.
Nice scoop Scottie. When do tickets go on sale? This Abraham fan will be there if possible.
I hope King Arthur wins. WIsh i could make it to this fight.
