Abraham-Dirrell: Will this be an easy fight for Andre?

By Scott Gilfoid: In looking over the stage 2 Super Six fight between Andre Dirrell (18-1, 13 KO’s) and former IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KO’s), I see it as one-sided a fight as you can imagine. Abraham, 29, is about as slow as Dirrell’s last opponent WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch in terms of hand speed, but doesn’t have the height or reach that the 6’1” Froch had going for him against Dirrell. Not that it helped Froch any, because he rarely landed any clean punches in the fight other than when he was in close to Dirrell.

Abraham, 5’10”, appears out of place amongst the much bigger Super Six contestants because of his limited height. You would think that Abraham’s speed would even the score and put him in the same class as the other fighters in the tourney, but Abraham has little hand speed going for him. Indeed, his punches, which I would describe as wide and ugly, are as slow as any I’ve seen.

What makes Abraham’s punches even slower is that he makes the mistake of throwing wide shots every time he throws a shot. He also has a really nasty habit of hooking his elbows as he throws a shot like he’s hitting a bag with both his punch and the elbow. If you look at Abraham’s fight with Jermain Taylor on October 17th last year, Abraham hurt Taylor by first hitting him with the right hand and then following through with his elbow that slammed into the side of Taylor’s face, staggering him.

It was a clever punch, although not exactly the fairest considering Abraham hurt Taylor with an elbow. It’s debatable whether the damage was done form the right hand or the elbow, but I’m inclined to see it as coming from the elbow because Taylor staggered immediately after getting hooked with it. Dirrell, 27, isn’t going to be standing directly in front of the slow-footed Abraham.

He knows that for Abraham to have any chance in this fight, he has to have the much faster handed Dirrell right there for him to land his slower shots. Dirrell, on the other hand, will be tattooing Abraham with punches from a distance, putting together incredible combinations that will be hard to see with the naked eye. Abraham won’t know how to combat Dirrell’s blazing hand speed.

This isn’t something you can exactly train for. If you have no hand speed and your feet are just as slow, it’s just not going to happen for Abraham. That’s like taking a simple fighter and then putting him in with a world class fighter and then expecting them to be competitive after having him train for eight week against a few hapless sparring partners.

It doesn’t matter who they dig up for Abraham to spar with in training camp, it won’t give Abraham fast twitch nerve fiber for his arms, shoulders and legs. The dude moves and punches like he has a lot of dead nerve fibers if you ask me. He never was very quick to begin with, but in the few years, Abraham has started to look even slower.

That’s bad news for Abraham, because speed is what he’s going to need most of all when he enters the ring against the talented Dirrell. I see this fight as Custer’s land stand for Abraham. Dirrell is going to encircle Abe, pick him off with arrow shots to the head, and then as he wears out in the later rounds, Dirrell will come in and lance the weary and shaken Abraham to the head with a powerful left hand to finish him off.

This happened in the 9th. round, but it was the side of his arm not his elbow firstly and second this was a good thing for Taylor, AA strait right was not fully extended if it was then it could have been an early k.o like the one that ended the fight.

Your report is absolute garbage. I was on the fight Abraham vs. Taylor – and it was a text bookful right straight line, which met Taylor at the chin. That Arthur Taylor is to have met with the elbow, you probably dreamed. Abraham will strike Dirrell just as brutally k.o, as he made also with Taylor. You can take and comfort it thereafter into the arm. I do not know at all, how one publishes at all such a report can. By your report you insult Arthur Abraham. The best becomes its, you pulls Dirrell in the bedroom; -)

fair play dirrell is quick and has boxing skills and has been a decent fighter up untill the super six. but he has shown us nothing since his big oppertunity at world class level and he is now fighting a harder hitting and possibly better fighter than froch and your claiming it will be easy?

why dont you give some praise to an english fighter like cleverly or mitchell instead of jumping up the a*s of an american who ran around the ring all night against froch.

LEE COO u’ll eat ya words..and WHEN Dirrell outclasses abraham i think u should appologise to scott lol

  • rizla says:

Dirrell will win via UD. The more i watch videos of dirrell and abraham the more i fancy dirrell to pull it off easily. Dirrell will use his quickness to get his shots away and get away..ppl dont like his style but it will prove effective. He’ll use his boxing skills to make abraham miss badly and step up the pressure In the 2nd half of the fight..ppl are rytin him off after the froch fyt wen he clearly won that..makes no sense. Abraham is 2 wild and will fade as the fight goes on and he isnt landin much..the hands will drop and it will be easy scoring for dirrell. A part of Dirrels plan should also be going to the body early as abraham really doesnt like taking shots there. It will be a good fight and my money is on Dirrell by UD.

No one will ever have an easy fight against Abraham, he is too tough.
If Dirrell fights like a girl and holds like he did against Froch then he will get beat badly.

  • LEE COO says:

INCREDIBLE COMBINATIONS THAT WONT BE ABLE TO BE SEEN BY THE NAKED EYE.
WHAT AN ABSOLUTE TOOL YOU ARE SCOTT
DIRRELL IS A DECENT BOXER, AND I USE THE WORD DECENT LOOSELY. HE WILL NEVER RULE THE SUP-MID WEIGHT DIVISION AND HE WONT WIN THE SUP-SIX TOURNEMENT.

  • z says:

um no this wont be an easy fight for dirrell.

  • Hello says:

Dirrell has to win this fight to have any chance of progressing because ward is gonna smoke him in his 3rd fight of the super 6!

  • Mccarry85 says:

Ah, back to the good stuff, Scott.

Like I said at the time I thought your “What round will Abraham be knocked out in?” was an absolutely atrocious piece of sports writing and well beneath you and what people on this site have come to expect.

More articles like this will keep me coming back.

have you even seen that fight or did you just read about it? that punch…the knockout punch…was straight down the middle with not a hint of an “elbow that slammed into the side of Taylor’s face” because that didn’t happen. absolutely clean knockout. a perfectly clean straight right, through the guard that had been widened by a looping left around the back…great boxing…classic one-two…abraham’s elbow doesn’t go past taylor’s guard at any point…his elbow actually bounced off taylors elbow & went nowhere near his face…you are full of ****. add clean knockout punches to the list of things you can’t tell from your elbow.

  • rizla says:

cummon nw girls we all saw dirrell clearly beat froch and he will easily beat abraham. all he lacked was that big fyt experience going into the froch fight..ino ppl will say he has no heart but boxing is about hitting you oppnent and trying nott to get hit.. call it running o whatever but dirrell landed more punches and won that fight clearly..he had no reason to stand and trade. dirrell will however have learnt that he must look more impressive by land more power shots..and those who say he has no power trusme he does and he will show every1 come fight night..abrahams face will b a sorry syt 4 awl u abraham bum lickerz lol

  • Will R says:

Funny how the punch that knocked out taylor was straight up the middle as opposed to the wide shots that you have so much hate for. Remember how these wide hooking shots were the ones that Froch wore Taylor down with. Probably not as your memory does seem to be selective.

I do give Dirrell a chance in this fight. But you seem to love Dirrell more than his mother. Your comparrison to Sugar Ray Robinson the other week was priceless.

  • Pete says:

So Taylor was unfairly beaten by Abraham now? He was losing on points and was then KO’d but that was unfair? Hilarious.

So you think that AA being 5’10 is going to make a difference? Brilliant.

I have a one word answer for you on the issue of height…. TYSON

  • NAZ says:

Perhaps you should ask Jermain Taylor who was the toughest opponent throughout his pro career??

  • NAZ says:

Ey Gilfoid why are u writing false sh*t here AA doesn’t have a defeat, tired of reading your stupid nonsense , how much is Gary Shaw paying u to write this crap??? you must like the negative attention ur getting

  • bruno says:

Well The super talented Dirrel lost against Froch, that takes a certain amount of talent when he is as good as you say. Lets face it Scott, Dirrel has a glass chin and is scared of being hit. It is a dilemma for him as AA could connect at any time. Dirrel will run ,hit and clinch. AA should wait until Dirrel clinches him, like he did against Froch and then butt him on the nose, as butting seems to be allowed in The American ring. Dirrel will spit his dummy out grab his teddy and go home. Bye Bye Dirrel

  • johnsmith says:

Scott , how long have you worked for dirrell ?.
dirrell should switch to track and field , he’s a hell of a runner !

  • Boxing Fan says:

Direll is going to get ktfo

  • scotty says:

Dirrell will fill his diaper again just like he did against Froch
