Will Pavlik fight Williams or Sturm in 2010?
By Jim Dower: WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-1, 32 KO’s) missed on a big fight with Paul Williams last year, and had to settle for a fight against number #3 WBC contender Miguel Espino in December. However, with Espino taken care of in an easy 5th round TKO, Pavlik, 27, can now focus on taking a live threat like Williams or possibly Sergio Martinez for his next fight. Pavlik missed a lot of action last year because of a nagging staph infection on his left hand that kept him out of action for 10 months in 2009 and limited his title defenses to only two for the entire year.
It would be a good fight for Pavlik in that he could possibly pick up another title in the process, but it would be a fight that might not thrill many boxing fans in the United States. Since winning the WBC/WBO middleweight title against Jermain Taylor in 2007, Pavlik hasn’t had too many appealing fights.
Fans thought that Pavlik, with his exciting style of fighting, would naturally be going after the most thrilling opponents while defending his titles. Instead, fans have had to be content with Pavlik fighting fighters like Gary Lockett, Marco Antonio Rubio, Espino, a needless rematch with Taylor and a fight against 43-year-old Hopkins, which Pavlik lost by a lopsided 12 round decision. During this time, Pavlik missed out on fights against Sergio Mora and Paul Williams because of his staph infection on his hand.
Boxing fans would appear to be more interested in seeing Pavlik fight the better known Williams at least in the U.S. rather than Sturm. However, Williams is a dangerous fighter who throws a lot of punches. You could understand why this fight might not end up getting made because of his busy style of fighting.
But if Pavlik doesn’t fight Williams, I’d hope that he would at least fight someone like Sergio Martinez rather than Sturm or another fighter. For me, I see the Sturm fight as another fairly safe fight for Pavlik, because Sturm has little power and mostly just throws jabs and few power shots.

williams team no not to take on pavlik now they no he will get KO,D pavlik will take williams power all night i dont think williams can take pavliks power
I do feel a bit of sympathy for Pavlik, what with the staph infection but instantly the sympathy disappears. Instead i am left feeling irritated. After his inactivity you may think its natural to take a tune-up (eg. Espino ) but i disagree. I wish the middleweight division would shape up!
If Pavlik is as good as some seem to think why does he always look messy and never listens to his corners advice? Heres a question: How many times have you heard his corner tell him,”Double the jab, follow with a right”? How many times does he do it?Not nearly as many times as he should.Say what you will but i think Pavlik is over-rated, sloppy and one-dimensional. Can’t wait for him to finally fight someone serious and get his ass whooped.
Pavlik should be eager to fight Williams after the trouble Martinez gave him. I wish I could have seen the face of Williams trainer at the end of round one, the same trainer that dismissed Martinez in such an insulting way. But what the hell, Williams throws a lot of punches. This has to happen soon!
you keyboard warriors! The guys that Pavlik beat were not bums. You fight them. Pavlik moved up in weight for hopkins who is now avoiding Greene. Pavlik vs Williams I hope.
That being said I do have amitt that to me the best fighter p4p i boxing history is Sugar Ray Robison!
He never ducked ANYONE and fought and beat the best in his era and even post era. FMJ is NOT better than SRR and I don’t think he will EVER be regaured as better,as he likes to claim he is. (SRR didn’t care about the money like FMJ does,he’d take the short end to get the fights with the VERY best!)
sorry I meant williams and pavlik fight can happend after they both clean their divisions.
I think a fight with sturm is the best choice right now. I thinki williams has to clean up the 154 division, a rematch with martinez for the title could be good. Then when martinez is the 154 king and pavlik the 160 king, a mega fight can be made.
I agree with roadkill, ever since hopkins beat pavlik he has been very catious about the fights he takes. He has had fights with some crap opponents recently. I think PW will bash him
williams should get the shot first. strum punked out of a abraham fight so he should stay in europe and feed on more tomato cans. pavlik vs williams is the only fight that matters at middle.
if palvik gets hammered by Hopkins, imagine what paul williams will do to him. i see him taking a big fight….
Pavlic will beat PW
roadkill
Senior citizen?! LOL
A comment like that only deserves LOL mLOL LOL LOL LOL
Roadkill how does Paul deserve a shot? he got his ass handed by a Jr middlewieght but was saved by the judges for that he can have a shot at Pavlik. Sorry but Paul needs to go to the back of the bus.
id like to have thought losing to hopkins would make pavlik a dangerous customer. without that “0″ to lose, i hoped he’d take on some more risky fights. but he has stayed fighting just below the top level for some reason. he has a chance to go out and do special things in 2010/11 if he has the fortitude.
