What happens if Clottey beats Pacquiao?

By Chris Williams: Not much has been discussed about what happens if Joshua Clottey beats World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao on March 13th. Maybe Clottey doesn’t have the greatest of chances to beat Pacquiao, that’s a given. But if Clottey does pull of a shocking win, especially a knockout victory, he’s going to send the Pacquiao express to a crashing stop. Can you imagine the news that would be generated if Clottey ends up beating Pacquiao?

This would make Clottey an immediate star and set up a huge money rematch for later in the year. I could see now less than two more fights between Clottey and Pacquiao if Clottey were able to beat him. It wouldn’t matter if Pacquiao beats Clottey in a rematch, there would be a lot of pressure on Pacquiao to prove that he can beat him twice to dispel that the win wasn’t a fluke.

You can forget about a fight between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. for the remainder of 2010 if Clottey beats Pacquiao. Who would want to see that fight if Pacquiao can’t beat a fighter like Clottey? It could still, I guess. After all, Pacquiao is fighting Clottey, who was just beaten by Miguel Cotto (a recent Pacquiao victim) in his last fight. This why, perhaps, some people don’t understand why Clottey was selected to fight Pacquiao in the first place with Joshua coming off of a loss to Cotto.

Pacquiao would probably still remain hugely popular with some fans regardless of how bad Clottey beats him. That’s just the way it is. Pacquiao would probably have to lose a ton of fights before some of his fans lose interest in him. However, I think a loss to Clottey would be a big blow for Pacquiao’s career. This isn’t a fight that is considered to be all that competitive going in, and if Pacquiao is beaten by someone that has failed in some of his biggest fights against Antonio Margarito and Cotto, it would cause some people to re-think how they see Pacquiao.

I could certainly see Pacquiao losing to Clottey. Let’s look at who Pacquiao has beaten recently. In the past year, Pacquiao has beaten Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto. Of those three, I would say that Cotto was the best fighter at the time that Pacquiao fought him. However, many boxing fans feel that Cotto hasn’t been the same fighter since he was stopped by Antonio Margarito a year earlier in 2008.

There’s no denying that Cotto took a vicious beating in the Margarito fight, and didn’t look good at all in his subsequent bout against Clottey in 2009. Cotto looked like he was on the verge of quitting at one point in the fight. He didn’t quit, but he looked really shaky for a few moments there late in the fight.

Cotto didn’t look like the same fighter he once was before the Margarito loss. And Pacquiao’s win over De La Hoya came at the end of Oscar’s career when he was losing as often as he was winning in past few years leading up to the Pacquiao fight. De La Hoya had lost three out of his last six fights coming into his December 2008 fight with Pacquiao, and Oscar’s only wins during this time was against little Steve Forbes, Ricardo Mayorga and a questionable win over Felix Sturm.

You might as well have taken away the wins over Forbes and Sturm. Forbes was too small, and the Sturm fight looked to be another loss for De La Hoya. To make matters worse, De La Hoya had to drop a lot of weight to fight Pacquiao at 147, and Oscar looked weight drained for the fight.

I think Oscar would have lost even if the fight had taken place at 154, because he wasn’t the same fighter by this point, but the weight loss certainly didn’t help him much. Ricky Hatton just looked shot. I don’t believe his punch resistance had been lessened by his earlier knockout loss to Mayweather in 2007, like some people think.

But I do think that Hatton wasn’t the same fighter when he met Pacquiao because of his tendency to eat and drink too much between fights. Hatton looked like a blimp before he started training for his fight with Pacquiao and he had to have taken off at least 20 or more pounds of fat to get in fighting shape for his bout against Pacquiao.

I’m being conservative with my estimate. Hatton might well have been as much as 30 pounds overweight before he started training for the Pacquiao fight. The eating and drinking obviously didn’t help Hatton, and neither did him having to adjust to a new trainer during training camp. Hatton looked like he over-trained for the fight and wasn’t there mentally or physically.

But ideally, I would have liked to have seen Pacquiao face someone like Timothy Bradley if Pacquiao was interested in fighting a light welterweight. I don’t think Hatton was the same fighter for a variety of reasons by the time that Pacquiao fought him.

I know Pac-Man is going to win this fight. I want to see Mayweather eat his words. He talks so much crap and can’t back it up. Instead he found a way out of the biggest fight of his boring career. Smarter fighter? No, he’s scared of Pacquaio. Manny is a humble fighter and actually cares about his fans. Money hungry Mayweather has no heart for the sport and he needs to be taken off this high horse he has himself on. I can’t wait to watch my favorite fighter on Sat beat Clottey. We all know who the best is-GO Manny P!!!

  • sidecomments says:

Pacquiao (a featherweight) is cleaning up the welterweights… Mayweather (a welter weight) is cleaning up the featherweights.

  • kenniev says:

Before all those fights, what were you boxing “analysts” saying? That Pacquiao has no chance against DLH, that Pacquiao will have the hardest puncher as a foe in Hatton, that Pacquiao will have the biggest test yet in Cotto. Bu after those fights we heard all the excuses in the world to put Manny’s skills into question.
Now you’re singing a different tune, in a way, because Manny has proven all his detractors wrong, dumb, and stupid. A different analysis with the same context (pity you)- to belittle manny’s achievements, because you all know by heart that Manny will gobble up Clottey alive. And you know what the outcome will be… I’M OUT!!!!

  • Simon says says:

“elloco” means a fool. You’re a fool to say Pac lost all his credibility. On the contrary, Pac earned more fans and sympathizers than ever before. Evil can’t overcome good, remember that. Accusing someone without proof is a devil’s work and such deed is doom to fail. Pac is innocent until proven otherwise. The burden of roof is in Fraud and his cohorts.

  • elloco says:

Manny just lust all the credibility by not submitting to random blood tests.

  • elloco says:

I guess damaged and overrated Cotto was a dangerous fighter. Clottey who lost to Cotto and is not busy offensively is a great fighter. Who are we kidding here, pac is fighting a tune up.

  • Fan says:

    @ Old $kool Playa
You should give Manny credit for choosing good names not fighters. Ricky Hatton retired, Oscar retired and Cotto moved up to 154 cuz he knows 147 was to draining on him to make. Even tho he fought Manny at 145. The thing that kills me is Floyd get no credit for his last three fights and he fought 3 of the same fighters that Manny fought. Oscar at 154, Hatton when he was undefeated and dominated Marquez who won more rounds against Manny. Lets be for real boxing fans. Manny last three fights have been a joke and for the money. This will be Manny first test since David Diaz.

  • Boxing Fan says:

If he loses (which obviously won’t happen). he will still be the most exciting and entertaining boxer ever. And his name will still be cemented in the boxing all-time greats.

The big question is, Will you stop hating once he proves you all once again that you were wrong? or will you make alibis again such as the overused “Oh! he was never the same fighter after cotto etc etc..blah blah blah..

PS: Never make accusations if you don’t have the proof.

  • Boxing Fan says:

What if?..It wouldn’t matter that much on Manny pacquiao as much as it matters to all pac haters. MP fights whoever is willing to fight him no questions asked.Even if he loses (which I’m completely sure he wouldn’t),He would still be on the list of the all time greats anyway.

If you watch post fights of pacquiao he always say he is just an ordinary fighter who just wants to fight and entertain the people and he always gives credit to GOD for his wins.

The real question is.. what if Manny beat Clottey?
Would you pac haters shut up,or make another alibi that clottey has never been the same since he lost to cotto or maybe clottey had a problem during training etc etc..You guys have been proven wrong ever since, you even use science theories to predict the outcome of the fight (Do you even know the word gifted?) and worse you accuse the guy of using steroids (Tested Negative).

Admit it Manny is an exciting fighter to watch and that’s what boxing fans like about him aside from winning. It all goes down to Entertainment.

  • motownhitman says:

In Floyd’s first and only fight at LMW he fought DLH and took his belt and it wasn’t at a catch weight..Floyd simply went in at a comfortable weight for himself and beat DLH while being outweighed by 4 pounds which is how much Floyd outweighed JMM when they fought.

  • Joe says:

Mr. Williams makes a lot of good points. De La Hoya was weight drained and well beyond his prime. Hatten as Mr. Williams points out had ballooned up and besides what non shot fighter had Rickey beaten. Then of course there is Mr. Cotto. A fighter who knows before hand that coming in at 145 lbs would drain him and does it anyway. No doubt he did it for the money. Most fighters want those big paychecks and will take chances to get it. Bob Arum and Pacquiao will want a handicap from now on. They will deliberately want to fight name fighters who are willing to weight drain themselves for the chance of a big payday. The fan, specially the anti Pacquiao fan will not even get the possibility of seeing two fighters at there best. Lets call it the Pacquiao handicap. How great can a fighter who needs a handicap for every fight be. The fighters who say they are fighting for their country like Cotto, should not agree to weaken themselves for money. HBO and the WBO as well as all boxing organizations should speak out against travesty. Boxing customers want to see two fighters at their best not just the one who is considered the star.

  • Chad Samuels says:

Manny Pacquiao beat an old Oscar De La Hoya, who was nowhere near the same fighter mentally or physically he was when he fought Floyd Mayweather. He then fought Ricky Hatton, who hadn’t look good vs Paulie Malignaggi and hadn’t been the same since suffering his first lost to Mayweather by TKO. Pacquiao ducked Mosley to fight Miguel Cotto who took 2 beatings back to back from Antonio Margarito & Joshua Clottey. In my opinion Clottey beat Cotto, but at the time Pacquiao vs Cotto sold better than Pacquiao vs Clottey. None of these fighters he has beaten have been the total package like a Floyd Mayweather, Shane Mosley or a Paul Williams. These guys that Pacquiao are fighting are shells of great fighters that they once were before and Bob Arum is hyping Pacquiao up by matching Pacquiao up with them, had he fought either of these guy 3 or 4 years prior to their fight, then the argument about who the best Pound 4 Pound fighter is would be legit. He didn’t want to fight Yuri Foreman because he is too tall. He is not gonna ever fight Paul Williams because he is tall as well. Mosley is a big risk, if fact too much of a risk to not get paid for taking. So that’s when Mayweather pops up, Pacquiao figures he could take a bigger risk in fighting Mayweather and get a bigger pay day win or lose. But $40 mil is not good of a enough reason to take a simple blood test. He took blood tests all the way up to the Hatton fight and as a matter of fact he took a blood test on the same day as the EriK Morales fight, which he lost. So he figures that the blood tests makes him weak. Mayweather then gives him the benefit of the doubt and gives him a 15 day cut off period leading up to the fight. He still turns it down. If you don’t have anything to hide then what’s the big deal? Pacquiao now takes a fight with Clottey who has never had a win over a top fighter before. Seems like Pacquiao is ducking Mayweather to me. Bob Arum is gonna ride the Pacquiao money train until it derails, he knows Pacquiao is not good enough to beat Mosley or Mayweather, and he also knows if Pacquiao loses then he won’t be worth as much as he is right now, so thats why he matches him up with fighters that he feels he can match him up with fighter that he can easily beat. Everything that Arum says about Paquaio being the best he has ever seen, better then Robinson, Hagler, Hearns or Leonard, those are the same comments he used to describe Mayweather when he use to promote him, now all he talks about is how Mayweather is not that good, if he is not that good then how come when there comes a fighter that gets a couple of notable wins underneath his belt the experts always say put him in the there with Mayweather. Now Mayweather vs Mosley is just about a done deal and fight fans have to tip their hats to both guys because they have step up to the plate and are making what some experts see as the biggest fight that can be made for both fighters outside of Pacquiao vs Mayweather. This fight is for the real Pound 4 Pound Championship.

  • crazy says:

These are the risks that fighter take to be great.

  • fly ty says:

@fan–the whole who beats who thing is not so viable until the match is made. some say langford would knock out vitali, etc, etc. I am speaking upon physiology and the development of athletes with respect to nutrition, bone density, maturation, actual timed speed and power. while everyone else can make their assumptions on what they like to think, i prefer to use scientific analysis. Everyone has an opinion. you are entitled to your own.

  • John says:

Even If he loses, he still has a mega fight with the loser of mayweather mosely, but clottey won’t throw enough punches for that to happen

  • lacem up says:

what if pigs fly out of my ass !! we will all have free bacon for a month !!

  • Optimus Prime says:

There is no way Clottey will beat Pacquiao. Clottey is so desperate coming from an impoverished african nation that he’ll fight somebody even if pumped full with PEDs if the money is right.

  • leonard e. says:

If manny loses then he is human afterall, albeit superhuman. It doesn’t make him any less great as a fighter because it’s all about fighting not winning all the time. The threat of a loss makes manny’s fights very intriguing and everytime he beats the doubts the victory is even greater. You don’t always have to win to be victorious as long as you did your best.

  • leonard e. says:

he risk of a loss is what makes manny so intriguing. he’s been doubted since dela hoya but everytime he beats the odds in spectacular fashion it makes the victory even greater. If he loses it’s okay as long as he tried his best. winning isn’t always the point, fighting and testing yourself cuts it already. Even superheroes lose. In norse mythology heroes always die but it doesn’t mean they failed.

  • JwGacey1 says:

Hatton has had a bad habbit of blowing up in weight between fights, but did not do so between the Mallinagi fight and the Pac fight, he also did not have to get used to Mayweather snr mid-way through this training camp but the last. I’m not a Hatton fan or a fan of the way he has done things, but you should get your facts straight, you really sound convincing when you are bulls**ting.

  • nestor's comments says:

what happen if mayweather doesnt fight mosely, coz he is scared to shane as well. would you cry mr.writer?

  • Fan says:

The fighters would have to depend on there skill. The sweet science of boxing.

  • VINCE VEGAS says:

Not that it helped Oscar all that much.

It’s not like the old days, when weigh in’s were the day of the fight. Almost everybody comes in dehydrated for the weigh in then rehydrates 10 pounds over night. Frankly, I think it’s dangerous.

Just think how the divisions would shake out if the old ‘day of fight’ weigh in rules we reinstated?

  • Fan says:

You are correct. I forgot Oscar did whatever he could do to try to win another title at another weight class. I stand corrected . Thank you

  • VINCE VEGAS says:

To Fan; And his Welterweight title is the first title in the history of boxing to be put up at a CATCH WEIGHT… Let deal with facts not opinion.

Actually, not true; When Oscar fought Bernard Hopkins for the linear middleweight title it was at a catchweight below 160.

  • Fan says:

    @fly ty

When PBF was dominating 130 he would have still been to much for Marquez. Marquez is a great fighter but PBF is special. The only fighters who could be PBF would be Hearns and maybe Sugar Ray. PBF would destroy Manny. Manny makes to Manny mistakes which Marquez did capitalized on. Marquez fighting style is similar to PBF. Let’s say Marquez is in the 5th grade and PBF is in grad school when it comes to there fighting style. Manny has problems with counter punches that gives you angles. This is Mayweather. PBF would do easy work on Manny. It wouldn’t be close. Manny is good at beating up flat footed fighters who stand right in front of him. Manny is a great small fighter. But when he starts to get up in weight he starts to fight more athletic fighters.

  • boxer 101 says:

As much as I would like to imagine how Clottey
can beat Pac, I don’t believe Clottey can do it.
    Not unless Pac underestimates him.

  • Berkley says:

If Clottey wins … then Mayweather will brag that he’s the #1 P4P fighter until the end of time … but the truth will be, Mayweather will be kicking his own ass for dropping the $40M pay check that he should had earned fighting Pacquiao.

  • fly ty says:

and out of respect to the article, clottey can beat pacquiao, but he probably wont.

  • fly ty says:

the difference between pbf vs. dlh and pbf vs. marquez is that pbf and dlh were at their natural fighting weights, or at least had fought at the weights they were at for numerous contests. Marquez fought below 130 for practically his entire career as this is the weight his frame carried optimally. To fight an extremely technical fight with someone of pbf’s skill was asking a lot from marquez at the given weight. Imagine pbf losing 15 pounds to meet marquez where he’s most comfortable. I suspect a more interesting outcome. Its unfortunate that people will not see marquez for what he is, a lightweight superstar. He’s not a pound for pound fighter, or at least started too late to develop into one. Marquez was chasing pacquiao up the ranks in the hope of finding a third match with pacman, plus the bigger money up the ranks. But unlike marquez, pacman had been draining himself for all those fights below 135. Its all just basic physiology.

  • Boxin Fan 10 says:

    @ An Honest Pacman Fan:
If you really were a real Manny fan then you would know Pacquiao himself has come in overweight for a twice. One time as a champion and he lost the belt at the scales for coming in over the limit. So if you believe Floyd is a cheat for coming in 2 pounds overweight to a catchweight welterweight fight after nearly two years of retirement then that means Pacquiao is a way bigger cheater than Floyd.

  • Boxin Fan 10 says:

    AN HONEST PACMAN FAN:
That was the first time Mayweather came in overweight for a fight. Remember he was coming off his near 2-year retirement so you can understand how maybe he had a little trouble making weight. If you consider Floyd a cheat for that than sorry to ruin your dreams and expose you a fake pacquiao fan because Pacquiao is also a cheat according to you. He came in overweight twice in his career and even lost one of his belts when he came in overweight for a title fight.

  • Ancient_Silence says:

Like most serious boxing fans i would love to see a tough fight ensuing between Clottey and Pacquiao but, I really struggle to see Clottey winning. Margarito is not exactly a ‘mover’ in the ring unless you count stalking as good footwork. He beat Clottey. Cotto’s footwork is better than Margarito’s but nothing near Manny’s in-out movement. Cotto beat Clottey.
So what i am going to be most curious about is how Clottey handles Manny’s movement. Its easy to hit something if it stands in front of you, not so much if it is moving toward and away from you the whole time. I reckon Manny will take some punches but eventually this should be a Pacquiao victory. Personally i would like to add that i dont see any amount of promotion and hype helping Clottey look like a super awesome fighter.

  • sporty says:

i say bring back manuel perez. this chris is an amateur! :D

  • An Honest Pacman Fan says:

    @Fan
So you don’t thin Mayweather cheated by coming in over the weight limit?

  • Tray R says:

If Clottey wins & Mosley wins, they will have a non stop action fight with the two. Those guys won’t back up or look for a break. As long as Shane beats Floyd there is no way the 2nd fight can be boring whether its Clottey or Pac Man

  • Fan says:

    @ an BIAS Pac fan

There you go with an opinion again. Watch how easy it is Manny is a cheat. YOU ARE FUNNY.

  • An Honest Pacman Fan says:

    @Fan

    Well he is a cheat.

  • Fan says:

You fault him for winning and dominating Marquez. Are you serious. You play to win the game. You play to win the game.

  • An Honest Pacman Fan says:

    @Fan

And Mayweather had all the advantages over Marquez and he still can’t get a KO or even a TKO win.

    Damn……

  • Fan says:

Roach did an interview with espn sayin he wouldn’t allow Pac Man to fight Oscar if Oscar weighted in more than 145. Then in another interview Roach said,

“He’s going to find out that it’s going to take more than dieting down to a Twiggy-like 145 pounds to beat Manny,” Freddoe Roach said in a report on Philboxing.com.

These were the words issuedby Roach, Pacquiao’s chief trainer, less than two weeks before the epic battle between his ward and boxing’s “Golden Boy” at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

  • Simon says says:

Fan, contrary to you allegations, DLH and Hatton are not left overs, they’re real deal. Prior to the fights, majority of the boxing fans and pundits gave Manny NO chance to win. But Pac did not only proved them wrong, he converted them into die hard fans. Reason: IN both fights, Pac won by TKO and KO respectively whereas your Fraud was lucky to win by a very close decision with DLH and Hatton case, he almost knock Fraud but he just can’t finish the job. A very convincing win for Pac in both fights.

  • An Honest Pacman Fan says:

    @Fan

If you are impressed with a guy fighting somebody 2 divisions lower than him just because it was a warm up fight then you are pathetic.

    Worse, he didn’t make weight.

We are not criticizing Marquez for going up. We are criticizing Mayweather for picking him. And if your argument is because Marquez called him out, how about Mosley? Up until now, they still haven’t made an announcement.

  • Fan says:

@ SIMON AND PAC MAN FAN

PBF came off retirement and for a WARM UP fight he fought the number 3 recognize best pound for pound fighter in the world. the same fighter who gave Manny the toughest 24 rounds he has ever been in. This was he’s warm up fight. And that fight look like a grown man playing with his lil kid.So let me get this right Manny is ok to fight but Marquez isn’t but they both are the same size. You see how this makes no sense.I mean DAMN the man was coming off of retirement and fought Marquez. And Marquez called him out.
Ricky Hatton isn’t a bigger fighter.

  • vince the millionaire says:

@ FAN, you are a factless fact at all. Manny fought dela hoya at 147 limit. Manny weighed 142 while oscar weighed 145. Oscar was rated at 154 bls while manny was rated at 135 that time and they had agreed to 147. see?

And Regarding catchweights, it has been there before you were born dude.

  • An Honest Pacman Fan says:

    @Fan

You are a moron. LOL. The reason I asked you that is so you realize that many people actually think that he was going to lose.

So how is that a joke?
As Simon asked you, what about Mayweather’s last fight? Exactly.

For Pacquiao to go challenging bigger men, it’s no joke. If it is a joke, let’s see you try it. Then come back and tell us how funny it is for somebody to punch your head in.

  • Fan says:

@ An honest Pac Man fan

What are you talking about. hahahahaha. Did you really just asking me a why did someone else thinks something. You make no sense. You are still taking about opinion and not facts. I don’t care about PBF or who he fought but to answer your question. 2005 But you still didn’t say anything about Manny’s last three fights. Manny LEFT OVERS Pacquaio.

  • Simon says says:

Fan, I could say the same with “Flawed” last fight with Marquez. It’s not only a JOKE it’s an utter shame for “Fraud” to fight a smaller guy and to make the matter worst come into the fight over the limit. What’s wrong with your idol?–>A real Cheater.

  • An Honest Pacman Fan says:

    I can’t believe I’m about to say this…
    but thanks Floyd Sr.

  • Floyd Sr. says:

    @Fan

Pac fought Oscar at the 147 limit. Oscar came in at 145 which is not Pac’s fault. It was only the Cotto fight where he fought at a catch weight.

  • An Honest Pacman Fan says:

    @Fan

If he didn’t clean up the 135 division and went back down or fought easier fighters then you can criticize him, but as I remember, he’s the one who keeps challenging bigger fighters while on the other hand Mr. Mayweather fought a smaller guy and still didn’t bother making weight.

  • salvador says:

Chris…..i thought you are a good writer, but this article doesn’t give any hint of any brainer. Pacquiao has no lossless to protect, we was beaten twice and yet he still managed to move to the top, what’s new if clottey beat him?…fight again. That’s what make Pacquiao popular and exciting because he never back off even if the opponent has a hundred of chances that gonna beat him.And stop making a lot of excuses for every fighter that he’s beaten like, past of his prime, dehydrated, not the same man, blah, blahblah…maybe if PAcquiao losses that he is past of his prime or maybe he’s not the same man.

  • An Honest Pacman Fan says:

    @Fan

If it was a joke, why is it that a lot of people didn’t give him a chance of winning, except for when he got to Cotto?

  • An Honest Pacman Fan says:

    @Fan

How long has Mayweather been a welterweight again?

  • Fan says:

    @ an honest Pac fan

I gave you a question which you didn’t answer. But the information I stated are facts. Manny cleaned out the 130′s and down. He hand picked David Diaz at 135 and didn’t try to clean that division out. I give credit for Manny for his fight but the last three are a joke period. Convince me why not. I call it like I see it. Manny is turning into Arturo Gatti (god bless the dead)

  • Fan says:

    @ mayor

If Manny fights Juan Marquez will people say WHAT IF. People you need to get this right. Manny has never fought at the Welterweight limit (which is 147). Manny has fought only two welterweights Cotto and Oscar and both was at a catch weight 145. PBF has fought more Welterweight. Look it up on Boxrec.com please…. This fight against Clottey will be his first fight without a catch weight. And his Welterweight title is the first title in the history of boxing to be put up at a CATCH WEIGHT… Let deal with facts not opinion

  • Elloco says:

Remember that this was the first time that a fight Floyd wanted didn’t happened Arum and Pacman refusal to take random test killed the megafight. Floyd will still make his money fighting Mosley.

  • An Honest Pacman Fan says:

    @Fan

    LOL.

You have got to be kidding me. If you can’t give credit to what he’s done then name somebody right now who has done better?

  • An Honest Pacman Fan says:

    @Fan

    Wake up!

  • Fan says:

    An honest Pacman fan
Can we say that Manny last three fights have been a joke. Is that safe to say

  • An Honest Pacman Fan says:

    @elloco

its not even a done deal yet…
    If Mayweather really fights Mosley,
hats off to him… But until they get to the ring, would you blame us if we doubt it?

  • Elloco says:

Floyd upstaged him by fighting Mosley and undermined him by making Mosley submit to random Olympic style tests.

  • MBA says:

I know it’s not going to be that easy for you to accept Manny’s greatness but even the Mayweathers cannot simply accept Manny’s accomplishments even if Floyd had done it himself albeit in less spectacular fashion..guys like you and Floyd can’t simply stomach a third world citizen to be able to knock every one else you can offer!

  • goodgrief says:

    agree with u wozabean

  • Gene says:

It’s just another tough fight for Pacquiao. And he knows he is just another boxer who can be defeated by a much tougher fighter. Just goes to show Pacman does not cherry pick his opponents unlike PBF. His legacy will still remain.

  • motownhitman says:

Old $kool Playa…do you really consider Pac’s win over DLH a quality win? After 8 years at fighting at 154+ can you honestly say DLH was a challenge? Not because of Pac’s talents but because DLH just looked bad.
I’m not hating on Pac but I can’t bring myself to giving him much credit for beating DLH.

  • Simon says says:

This is a no brainer question but accident can happen. So there’s only one way Pac can loss-by accident and I will still, like so many others, be a loyal fan to him no matter what. I am confident however, that Pac will come on top and victory by Pac will come via KO.

  • jen says:

every time pac beats a fighter, there are always excuses and reasons. making pac won not because his good but his opponent is weak. now chris williams is saying pac would lose to clottey. if pac wins, what would be the next excuse! perhaps, clottey is not a good fighter, etc.

one would almost hope for a clottey win! im a die hard pacquiao fan, but more than just pacquiao i love a good rematch if not a possible trilogy like pacquiao vs morales. the only way one could see a rematch work if pacquiao wins is if it comes do to a judges decision. come march 13 i’ll be rooting for pacquiao but if he were to lose i would anticipate a rematch against clottey would be even better. In the end pacquiao isn’t afraid to fight the best which is why he’s so much fun to watch, constantly pushing the envelope and not waiting around to see outcomes of future fights like the mosley vs berto that recently fell through. the top 3 fighters, berto, mosley, and mayweather were out so he picked up clottey. hats off to pacquiao and i can’t wait till march 13.

  • duys says:

no matter if Pacquiao loss in this fight or more, I m definetly a Pacs fan, so I know and I mean always know that Pacquiao will always give u the best fight. Watch his last 10 fights. he is a great champ, he is a true warior, and he is definetly THE HEART OF BOXING. If he loss to this fight and then make another fight latter, I will always put money on him. 100% Guarantee!!!!!

  • roy says:

Solini I watch MMa too,if I pay 65.00 I want to 500 +punches thrown if not,I can watch utube sparring for free.that goes for everyone, boxing would be dead ,if all fighter was like floyd,no one would punch, no one would pay 65.00 .

  • roy says:

ha,….steroids side effects …..its gives you the hot head rage, the restlessness, the big ego,the always talking about himself, the dishing out of his opponent as kicking his butt, always saying he the greatest and their no one like him, the referring to himself as a 3th person in interviews ,hey, don’t this sound more like floyd, it not cool headed humble pac at all.

  • Solini says:

    @roy

“if your a professional fighter you do it for your fans and you get paid to get hit and hit back”
You might want to stop watching boxing and tune into MMA. What does Floyd say there’s nothing cool about taking punishment. Boxing is to hit and not get hit. It seems the people who don’t like Floyd seem to just want to see fighters slug it out and see who’s the last man standing. I won’t lie I loved watching Arturo Gatti but look what happened to him and fighters like him they’re entertaining but they don’t last long. Look at Cotto, everyone was on his balls until he ran into Margarito and people quickly jumped off his shipped and hoped on Pacquiaos, it’s funny how everyone is a die hard Pacquaio supporter from his last 3 fights. But when he losses you’ll all abandon ship and hope on someone else.

  • elloco says:

As long a Pac is on the juice he will whoop any boxer…Almost feel sorry for Clottey…He getting p*mp for pocket change against a juiced fighter…

  • roy says:

you sure your not floyd? if your a professional fighter you do it for your fans and you get paid to get hit and hit back.manny will clean out the welter weight ,its called confidant.he could lose but its ok as some styles will give you trouble,.I think that the reason why floyd only fight 1 fight a year, you can cherry pick a fight one year and some will forget it next year.in time manny will be knowed as the top fighter.

  • Ryan Dunn says:

Every match, Manny’s opponent goes in thinking they are going to shock the world (see De La Hoya and Hatton in their 24/7 episodes with Manny for a reminder).

And every match, Manny says: “I train hard. I fight hard. If God wants me to win, I win.”

The lead up to this match will be no different.

The only time we will hear Manny any differently will be if/when he fights Mayweather. There will be a personal mission to hurt Floyd by Manny if they fight. (which may be exactly what Floyd wanted all along, in textbook B-Hop vs. Trinidad style, make it about character and culture… works every time).

    …ryan

  • Karlito says:

If Clottey beats Pacquiao the floyd will run his mouth untill the end of time about how manny is garbage, that Floyd is the gretest of all time and shouldn’t be in the same conversation as himand blah blah blah and so on and so on. Come on Manny!!!!

  • 1234 says:

win or lose Pac will still have a strong fan base. a loss means nothing other than even the greats can be defeated (he’s only human). as mentioned below at least Pac has the intestinal fortitude to step into the ring and risk a loss against a strong fighter. The thing with Pac regardless of who he fights, he fights and thats what the fans want.

  • Dopey says:

looks like Chris Williams wants to say but couldnt write that if Pacquiao lose with Clottey that’s the end of Pacquiao. Win or lose doesnt matter for Pacquiao or for the fans of boxing. Pacman lose 3 times already but still fighting. For the fans who likes boxing, we don’t care as long as the fighter/boxer gives his best win or lose at least he tried fighting without dodging anyone.

  • Solini says:

I strongly believe Pacquaios handlers have made a mistake in pinning him against Clottley sure Bob Arum doesn’t care he’s taking his chunk out of both fighters who he promotes. And if and win Manny losses to someone he’ll discard him just like he did Cotto for one last big payday. People get all into the hype of the Pacquiao -Mayweather drama when people seldom bring up Bob “raping my fighters” Arum.

  • breathtakingkibitzer says:

So what if Clottey beats Manny Paquiao? That’s the purpose of boxing fight – to beat your opponent. The uncertainty of the outcome adds excitement & makes us watch the fight. Am sure Manny will just brush it off and calls it a day. Furthermore, it will make Mayweather happy.

  • Andre00 says:

Who cares about this, Clottey!!! it is done !!!

  • Andre00 says:

It is done, Floyd vs Shane may 1 MGM

  • Duke says:

    @ hatch
if clottey beats pacquiao and pacquiao wins the eventual rematch, he aint giving clottey a rubbermatch. manny has no chance of knocking clottey out. clottey is just really good defensively. and what did manny do once he squeaked out a decision from marquez in a rematch? he ran up in weight. i believe floyd vs shane is gonna happen. and why not? shane gets hit too much and doesn’t have the authoritative jab to beat floyd. so if both manny and floyd win their next bouts, who is gonna look better? i believe 14 days is reasonable and its enough time for manny to juice up before the afterfight test if he was dirty.

  • sky says:

Don’t care about the ending as long pacman is in the ring and fighting I’m happy. Coz I know it’ll be a great fight and worth watching.

  • ElCondor says:

It only means Clottey does have a chance against the PacMan. Good for him, and good for Manny, too, for choosing a guy who has a good chance of beating him. Picking Clottey tells a lot about the PacMan’s character – he’s one guy who’s willing to take risks. That’s why he’s an exciting fighter, and the fans luv him. Can’t say the same of his #1 critic, who’s all talk, talk, and more trash talk. In Pacquiao, we see a Real Champion.

  • TRUNKS says:

Clottey would be a fool to even think about his loss to Cotto when he’s now facing Pacman. I don’t think that Clottey lost by a very large margin to Cotto as well. Win or lose Pacman will deliver and give the fans the fight they want to see. See how he got beat by Sanchez and Morales? It was a bloody fight that’s well fought. He was head butt twice, punched below the belt, took heaps of shots, was bloody and all but he never stopped coming back until the doc final stopped it. That’s what a true warrior is so please stop making excuses. Of course Cotto is going to be a different fighter after his loss to Margarito because he has to learn his lessons otherwise he’d be a loser forever. A true champ knows how to celebrate his victories well and learn from defeats. If Pacquiao loses to Clottey then so be it for as long as he doesnt sell out the fight and gives it all he’s got then we are all happy! Pls stop writing articles like this as it drives people to have a losing mentality.

  • CEP says:

This is always an option in a sudden death sports like boxing, Judo, Karate, MMA, and non-professional wresting! I can see where some fans will leave, but they are the ones who never competed in a sudden death sport! If you really stop and think about it, look at the odds of someone at this level hitting on all 8-cylinders at a given time and date? How many days do you roll out of bed and feel like crap? These guys are no different than anyone of us. They have good days as well as bad. I don’t think the average person thinks about it this way!

  • Hatch...I like your Style! Word! says:

If Clottey beats Pacquiao, then there will be a rematch. And the rematch will be bigger in terms of excitement and sales. If in the rematch Pacquiao bests Clottey, then there will be a third and final match, a yet bigger draw. Either way, both will make a lot of money.

If however, Pacquiao beats Clottey on March 13, the next fight will be either Mayweather or Mosley (whoever wins if Mayweather vs Mosley happens), which I doubt very much since Mayweather will not fight Mosley. Otherwise, he would have fought Mosley a long time ago when Mosley called him out and insulted him in front of the TV right after the Mayweather-JMM match and he just mumbled and whispered that Mosley was disrepecting him.

So most likely, it will be a Pacquiao-Mosley fight when Pacquiao beats Clottey which is most likely will happen. Mayweather will not fight Pacquiao or Mosley. That’s a given. How many days has it been since Berto cancelled out of the fight with Mosley? Heard anything from the Mayweather camp? NO! The only ones talking are the promoters and all they’re saying is negotiations are going on. What is there to negotiate? What’s holding it up? Mosley will fight Mayweather even if he has to do it naked in the ring and will accept any purse split just to prove to everybody he is the better man.

So forget about Mayweather vs Mosley. Forget about Mayweather vs Pacquiao. IT AINT NEVER GONNA HAPPEN! Mayweather will keep his “0” to the grave even if he has to fight Ivan Calderon or Erik Morales or Barrera doing it.

  • Duke says:

i don’t get how everyone is not giving clottey a chance. manny has been blowing out damaged fighters since the marquez rematch. diaz, oscar, ricky and cotto all were prior ko victims. i never seen clottey hurt and his chin and high guard will negate manny’s power. manny will have to box and outpunch clottey to win a decision. but when clottey hurts manny, manny will stand and try to get payback. it is then that we’ll see if manny has a welterweight chin.

  • It could Happen..That's Why Pacquiao's the P4P Champ! says:

Pacquiao Risks losing to great fighers. It’s why he’s got the biggest following and the most respect. This writer, Chris Williams, should stick to writing puff pieces for his idol Mayweather.

  • James says:

Mr.Chris Williams, what if Pacquiao wins, will you stop writing? You are just making things complicated. Ofcourse there will be always a chance for Pacman to loose, this is a boxing match, win, loose or draw!

  • stopdaignorance says:

boxing is fought by fist, not by mouth, there are still a lot of people blinded and there ignorance persist thinking clottey has a chance of this fight. In defense to clottey he is a man with class, pacman will respect him, unlike pretty boy, mouth 4 mouth king

  • kari says:

chris williams, you again? i told you to consult dad before opening your trap.

answer this question, son: when ali lost to frazier, was it the end of ali’s career?

  • Rapido says:

Life goes on. Pac has lost before. He has no perfect record to protect. Mayweather losing to Mosley will be more devastating to Floyd than Pac losing to Clottey.

  • The Doc says:

If he loses, no probs, Manny and his countrymen don’t have problems with that. That’s life brothers, Filipinos just move on and try again. Difficult concept to comprehend for you I see.

  • hawk says:

If Pacquaio loses Mayweather is far more likely to step in the ring with him. So lets hope Manny doesnt smash Clottey to smitherines, otherwise the superfight will never happen!

  • Ukansodoff says:

If Clottey beats the Pacman then i think the sun will blow up.

But then it may not. Who knows.

  • blueblood says:

Not much of an article, if a boxer losses then he would fight again that is boxing.

  • John says:

The good thing about Pac is he is legit and he will always have fans. Win or lose he will always give a good fight. It’s not all about money for Pac, see how easy to walk away from 40 million if principle is stepped on?

  • kablam! says:

i have a feeling it will be more devastating to his fans than pacquiao himself…. the world will continue to spin but not for them… i predict mass suicides lol

  • Tony Pongus says:

There is definitely a possibility and even a probability that Clottey will beat Pacquiao because he is bigger. There will be two protagonists in the ring and either one can win. All your downgrading of Cotto and Clottey are all for naught. Despite the fact that Mayweather is bigger than Pacquiao, he conveniently went into retirement rather than fight Margarito, Cotto or Clottey during the height of their popularity. If Pacquiao loses to Clottey, the biggest loser will be Mayweather because he is the one who really needs the money.

  • NamCap says:

If Pacman losses to Clottey … he losses …life continues we would be seeing a rematch just like what you said … I don’t see it affecting him financially his already a made man money wise …. proves his just a human being. I wonder what if he wins and mayweather losses to Mosley? That would be something……

  • Jesus... says:

If he loses, then the world keeps on turning and he keeps lining up big fights for big money, especially if he puts on a show for the people (which he never fails to do). How many big fights did Oscar lose over the last decade? And he was still, undoubtedly, the biggest draw in the sport.

You give the people what they want, they will support you, win or lose.

  • dan says:

well…clottey would become wbo welterweight champion…which he should have been after the cotto fight.

  • Paul Mason says:

Pacquiao will not lose this fight, he is a machine and will destroy Clottey

  • Wait-a-Minute says:

    QUESTION TO ALL:

What will happen if Mayweather loses to Mosley?
    How will that affect everything?
    Who will Pacquiao fight next?
Will it still be $40M each?
I’d like to pick everybody’s brain.

  • likley says:

what if ? big deal. These things happen in Boxing, there are upsets. Is it the end of the world ? No, we move on
(not much of a talking point Chris
