WBA confirms Khan vs. Maidana will be taking place – Breaking News

By Eric Thomas: The World Boxing Association has reportedly confirmed that WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan will be fighting WBA interim champion Marcos Maidana for a fight that should be taking place in April, likely on the undercard of the Bernard Hopkins vs. Roy Jones Jr. bout on the 17th. An agreement has been made between Khan and Maidana’s management teams.
This news will no doubt delight many of Khan’s boxing fans, because they wanted to see Khan face the big bitter and not run from him. This will be a risky fight for Khan, because Maidana hits hard and Khan’s chin has been his weakness since turning pro five years ago. Up to this point in his career, Khan has faced only one big puncher – Breidis Prescott – and was promptly knocked out in one round by Prescott in September 2008.
Khan never attempted to avenge the defeat to Prescott, something that didn’t endear him to some of his fans and critics. Maidana hits hard enough to draw comparisons to the Khan-Prescott fight and if Khan can’t find a way to avoid Maidana’s big shots, he could find himself another knockout victim.

if golden boy knew khan vs maidana was gonna happened before signing khan, it was a dumb move. its not a matter of if but when maidana lands the right, khan is sleeping for sure.

Respect khan for taking this fight, if he wins it will be his most career defining fight. I do not think khan will try to brawl this dude and will outboxing smartly. Speed kills and remember khan has underated power that has yet to be complete. This is kid is gonna get faster and stronger.

I don’t think Maidana was robbed against kotelnik. Kotelnik stood his ground in most of the bouts and did not allow Maidana to push him back and dominate him. And guess what? Kotelnik took some punishment for this.
Now, Khan will not stand toe to toe with Maidana. So the question is can Khan fight on the back foot? The answer is I DON’T THINK SO.
Khan is untested, but from what i have seen, i don’t think he has the skill to get away and avoid being cornered.
I can see Khan taking some serious punishment and losing badly.
hatton should retire because I think things are going to end badly for him regardless if he chooses a lesser top fighter.He has nothing left to offer boxing i personaly think he should become a trainer. Dangerous fight for khan, Im not a khan fan but i think he can pull it off, as long as he boxes clever and stays away from maidana’s power punches. Khan’s technique is alot better than madiana’s, maidana leaves himself open to punches. I can see khan winning on points or stoppage.

The problem Roach had, was that fight could be huge and he wanted to build up Maidana and Khans profile in the states before they fought.
IF we wanted to avoid Maidana, he would have vacated the belt. Simple as that.

i agree with oscar on this one maidana is a great puncher and hits the hardest in 140lbs division bar none, but speed kills i see this as same as pacquaio vs cotto. khan is pacquiao because of speed and maidana is cotto because of power but trust me on this one khan will school this guy. pacquaio will beat clottey by 7th round tko. ricky hatton should fight one of the following- victor ortiz, timothy bradley or tony margarito

i think everone is jumping the gun maidana has excellent knockout record because he fights people who have lost more fights then they won bar victor. he lost to kotelnik so i can see kahn taking him to school
This time next year Amir Khan will be an American citizen and these writers won’t have a bad word to say about him. I mean if they think he has a suspect chin they have a very suspect pen. The soft chin of Khan and his first round KO loss to Breidis ( i think that his name) is enough for me to come to this conclusion. Puncher always have a chance against even the best boxers. Khan is a good boxer, but i don’t think he has the experience to hold up a Maidana assault for 12 rounds. I think Khan can KO Maidana, but I am sure that he will be moving back and fighting from a safe distance.

Maidana is top 5 and will be a hard test for Khan. Everyone needs to realise that Khan is still growing into his body and is only 23. To be getting these big fights at his age is a remarkable achievement in itself. The British fans as usual slate their most talented sportsmen so Khan has done the right thing to move everything to the States where he will prove to be a big hit. Lets hope Khan continues to prove the haters wrong and as a Brit i would like to wish him all the best, keep working hard!

Khan can win this. He just cant risk getting hit too much. But Maidana can knock him on his arse and keep him there. Khan has to go and not get hit. He can do it to Kotelnic, but maidana isnt as predictable as kotelnic.

This will be interesting as Khan wont stand and trade with Maidana like Ortiz did. He will box and move. He has excellent handspeed and good power which could give Maidana fits. That said if Maidana lands on Khan will his chin hold up.

Good on Amir hes showing hes got the balls to take the hard risky fights. Cant give him more respect for taking this fight with maidana knowing that Amir has the chin that he has. wba didnt confirm the fight,they confirmed that purse bids had been canceled,but that just to give gbp time to work out a deal between khan and maidana,as gbp promote both fighter,khan will be abel to swerve this fight,by him and maidana both taking interm fights,before them having to face each other,but i still realy cant see this fight happning at all.

Khan walked into the unknown full of confidence against Prescott which is why Mitchell (usually a brawler) fought with such caution. Khan did not have that warning.
I predict Khan will win but what another great fight we have to look forward to in 2010.
