The Khan-Maidana fight not a sure thing – News

By Nate Anderson: It’s bout between WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan and World Boxing Association light welterweight interim champion Marcos Maidana isn’t a sure thing after all. There are reports that Golden Boy Promotions is still deciding who they want Khan to fight in April, and it might not be the hard hitting Maidana. Golden Boy wants Khan to fight an established star, someone that Amir can look good against, because this will be the first bout for Khan in the United States.

Maidana isn’t a fighter that Khan will have much of a chance to look good against, especially if Khan is running for his life all night long or getting knocked down and beaten. Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach also isn’t comfortable with Khan facing Maidana at this time.

Roach wants more time to build this fight up and feel that it can be a huge fight at some time in the future once Maidana and Khan are better known. You can’t disagree with that. However, the problem is that Khan, unless he wants to vacate his title, might only be able to get one fight in at the most before having to fight Maidana.

He won’t be able to fight four or five times before having to face Maidana. If we’re talking about Maidana and Khan fighting only once in the U.S against soft opposition before they meet up later in 2010, it might not make much of a difference. It takes a good opponent for a fighter to get attention in the United States and I think Roach might be missing that point.

Light hitting Paulie Malignaggi is the fighter that Khan would most likely be matched against, and that’s probably not someone with enough power to make Khan look good against. Khan needs someone that will be a test for him and not a fighter that will spoil and make him look bad. If they choose Malignaggi, I see that as a mistake. Malignaggi will frustrate Khan.

At the same time, beating him isn’t the same as beating someone who is trying to take Khan’s head off. Ricky Hatton would be a great opponent for Khan to fight instead of Malignaggi. But Hatton doesn’t seem too interested in taking the fight with Khan.

Hatton is already a star in the U.S. and it wouldn’t help him any if he were to face Khan in America. That’s a fight that would only do well if it takes place in the UK, not America. Hatton would be better off going after Juan Manuel Marquez.

Golden Boy will be making a decision soon about who Khan’s next opponent will be. They have a two extension to make a decision whether to fight Maidana or try to buy some time and squeeze in a voluntary defense in between that fight against someone like Malignaggi. If that happens, Maidana could fight on the undercard against someone.

As I said, I doubt that that Khan will come out shining in a fight against Malignaggi, and I also doubt that fans will notice Maidana much if he’s matched against someone that he can just roll over. If they do this, they’ve got to find opponents that can give Khan and Maidana some genuine trouble. That’s what interest fans. They don’t want to see mismatches. A Khan-Malignaggi fight isn’t a mismatch, but it would likely be a dull fight because of the all the movement. You can’t have two hunt and peck fighters in there without boring the crowd to death.

I agree with roach.. Madaina at this point in time is a tough opponent for khan. However I can only see this fight as bringing the best outta him skills wise. A fight against Pauli m wiuld mean 2 styles which are the same will clash against each other, hence make it borin. Khan needs to fight sum1 like ricky hatton which wud b gr8 4 every 1..

khan has been knocked out bad, say what you want about marco but he beat the hell out of highly reguarded ortiz. marco has heart something khan hasnt proved yet. expect khan to be a protected champ and they will keep him away from anyone who can punch. sicking.

Iqbal there are other fighters in Britain what you going to do if Khan gets beat.
Try another opinion on other fighters or don’t you follow english boxing.

Istiaq Ham’ed, stop licking his balls!! as its you thats pathetic with your hero worship just because he comes from your neck of the woods.

    How about Ortiz vs Khan….?

  • Joe says:

They should have Khan Malignaggi and Ortiz Maidana 2 that would be a great card

  • Naheem Iqbal says:

This bad mouthing against khan is getting boring. I bet maidana will end up ducking khan as his speed will be way too much. if the fight goes through, khan to win inside 4 rounds. He will totally overwhelm him.

  • Boxingfandan says:

Khan should fight ortiz. Ortiz is strong he can box and it would be good for khan. Espeically since khan beat him in the amateurs by a 2nd round TKO

I am fine with Khan taking on a different opponent for his first fight in the US. I have nothing against Amir it’s just the hype that i hate.
I HATE THE HYPE, and i hate it even more when it loops round to a point where Khan and his funs think that they don’t have to prove anything to anyone and that they can pick any fighter they want. It makes me wish someone like Maidana could walk into the ring and teach him a lesson.
But like i said, let him take a different fighter, and let’s reset this thing to ZERO. He’s a young man and everyone makes mistakes (i.e. too much hype, and going for the WBA title).
He can have all the time in the world to develop as a boxer, but from what i have seen, I KNOW HE WILL NEVER BE GOOD ENOUGH TO BEAT MAIDANA OR OTHER TOP FIGHTERS.

    Khan will run

Its gets more like a pantomime every day? still what should we expect with the stage manage circus his career has been so far, HE OVER THERE!!! OH NO HE’S NOT ha ha.

  • rob says:

boxings getting more and more pathetic, can anyone disagree?

  • juan says:

khan can school maidana. i think it has more to do with ortizs’ desire to ko maidana that put maidana where he is now. ortiz could have easily beat maidana buy boxing him after the fourth, rather than stand flat footed and try to ko him. those early knock downs of maidana made ortiz comfortable and cost him the fight. not to mention he quit. i think roach can train khan to fight the right fight and pull out good decision win using boxing and his speed.

  • scott1 says:

people are overlooking the fact that pm is a live opponent for khan and could quite possibly outpoint him.

  • Anonymous says:

khan retire if you dont go thru with maidana fight.

  • z says:

roach doesnt want anything to do w/ maidana, would be very surprised if this fight happens, usually freddie gets what freddie wants.

  • angel says:

they want their cake and eat it too. shouldnt have fast tracked khan to the top if they werent prepared for the big fights.

  • MightyJo says:

Khan – malinaggi in my view would be fast paced action as would khan-marquez, having one of these fights as an intro before maidana fight makes perfect sense. Especially if the fight is on the help the aged (Hopkins-jones) undercard

  • KAM says:

You can run but u cant hide Khan might as well face him sooner rather than later.
