Pavlik could be facing Martinez, Mundine or Sturm next

By Jim Dower: According to Cleveland.com, WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik’s co-manager Cameron Dunkin is saying that Pavlik (36-1, 32 KO’s) could be facing one of four possible opponents next, against either WBC light middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, Anthony Mundine, WBA middleweight champion Felix Sturm and a 4th fighter that is still yet to be determined.

It was thought that Pavlik, 27, would be facing Martinez next. However, manager Dunkin shot that idea down, saying in effect that it’s too soon to tell right now who Pavlik’s next opponent will be. Top Rank, Pavlik’s promotional company, and Dunkin will reportedly be meeting with HBO management next week to determine Pavlik’s next bout, which could take place as early as April.

It would be hard to imagine that HBO, if they have any influence in this, will want to see Pavlik facing Mundine or Sturm. Those are good fighters, but not well known to casual boxing fans. Pavlik has already had three fights against obscure opponents in his only three title defenses since winning his WBC/WBO middleweight titles in a 7th round knockout win over previous champion Jermain Taylor in September 2007.

Since that time, Pavlik has beaten little known Gary Lockett, Marco Antonio Rubio and Miguel Espino. Pavlik has also beaten Taylor in a rematch with neither of his titles being on the line in February 2008, and was trounced by 43-year-old Bernard Hopkins in a one-sided 12 round decision loss in October 2008.

Pavlik was finally set to face a real challenge in Paul Williams late last year, but twice Pavlik had to pull out of fights with Williams because of a staph infection on his left hand. More than a few boxing fans felt that Pavlik would have lost that fight had it taken place. It’s curious that Williams’ name isn’t mentioned as one of the four possible opponents for Pavlik.

Sturm, Mundine, and Martinez are good fighters, but Williams would seem to be a tougher opponent than any of them. That’s why it’s disappointing that his name wasn’t mentioned. Who knows? Perhaps HBO will ask the same question that I’m asking and want to see the Williams-Pavlik fight. I know I do. Williams recently beat Martinez by a 12 round decision.

I don’t know why Pavlik would even be considering a fight with Martinez rather than Williams. Although it was a close fight, I had Williams beating Martinez by at least four rounds. He dominated most of the fight with his better work rate. Martinez had a chance to win but he messed it up by moving too much and focusing on throwing too many pot shots instead of putting his shots together.

I still think that Martinez would be too good for Pavlik and dominate him as easily as Hopkins did. That’s why I doubt Martinez will be the one that Pavlik’s team chooses for him to fight next. My guess is that Sturm will get the pick. Mundine won’t get selected because he’s been facing mostly 2nd tier opposition for the past four years and it would seem like that should disqualify him for a fight with Pavlik.

I say should because I can easily see him ending up as the fighter that Pavlik chooses next. It wouldn’t be a shock given Pavlik’s other three opponents for his title defenses.

to dejemil and mundine fans i am a mundine fan to. but pavilik and other boxers are not ducking mundine they want to fight mundine. but mundine wants more of the money when he fights good boxers so we all should be trying to tell mundine to fight for less money to show he his good against good boxers. but also mundine fights have been boring to watch in his last 6 fights which dont look good against boxing fans in america and the world.so mundine is hard to promte overseas because he has been a boring boxer he needs to show people in america that he is good and not just fast on his feet. lets hope mundine can change this year

  • djemil says:

why do these fighters keep ducking anthony the man mundine are they chicken?

  • marktheman says:

Choc Mundine will destroy Pavlik in the ring. He’s been number #1 contender for Sturm’s belt forever, but they aren’t forcing Sturm to defend which is what sucks about boxing. Watch Pavlik avoid this fight, and watch the anti-mundine australian bogan’s say that Mundine is ducking when he has already called out Pavlik, Sturm and even Winky. He will take on anyone!!! GO MUNDINE!!!

    I don’t wanna see Pavlik-Martinez. Only Pavlik-Williams or Williams-Martinez II.

You gotta admit, Williams has every reason to demand a 50-50 split (but of course, Bob Assrum never agrees to that). I mean take a look at 2009. Williams has been busting his ass. He destroyed Winky Wright and beat Martinez on a very short notice. And what has Pavlik done? Three defenses against bums, with his last big fight being a one sided boxing lesson against Hopkins in 2008. He also missed out on a highly anticipated middleweight unification bout with Arthur Abraham before he moved up to 168. He’s still living off of those two Jermain Taylor wars, and its not like nobody else has KO’ed Taylor since then.

I’d bet the 4th “mystery” opponent is Lucian Bute. He’s already got an April 17th date set with no opponent named yet. If HBO could talk Kelly into it, this would fulfill HBO’s desire for Williams/Martinez II, and give Pavlik a serious fight.
The more I think about it(mystery opponent aside), I think Pavlik should meet Martinez, and Williams should meet Sturm. Or vice versa… The winners could unify the middleweight belts in the fall.(I’d keep Pavlik & Williams opposite each other to build the hype, should both win.) Ultimately, whoever met in the unification could split 50/50. A little mini middleweight elimination for HBO to host. Just a thought…

The only reason Williams’ name isn’t mentioned is because now, all of a sudden, the contract he signed to fight Kelly in December is not good enough. What happened in a month that changes things so much for them to need a new contract? Sign the contract, Paul!!
And you’re crazy if you think Williams dominated Martinez! At best it was a draw, and if Sergio had not run out of gas in the last 2 rounds, he’d have won. Williams needed those last 2 rounds to draw even with Martinez in my opinion. I know it was a close fight, so I could see a slight win for either… but to say that Paul “dominated” him?
I love how people act like anyone can do what Hopkins did to Pavlik. He was bigger, stronger and got off first, and that’s why he won. Sure he was landing first, but B-Hop’s strength was stopping Kelly in his tracks when he landed. None of the guys mentioned are bigger or stronger than Kelly, and it won’t be as easy as people think for any one of them to beat him. Pavlik leaves lumps on guys’ heads…
Having said that, Kelly can only shut up his critics in the ring, so I hope the Williams fight gets made this year.

Williams would be a good match. Sturm would be alphabet title headache in term of contracts.

  • perko says:

mundine would school pavlik same as hopkins , easy sparring work.

  • JD says:

With Abraham, Taylor, and Lacy leaving the division there isn’t much in the way of name opponents left. If he’s willing to risk his “0″ Chavez Jr. will at least bring in the Mexican fight fans and generate some box office.

  • Supreme Court says:

Mark my words: pavLEAK is not going to face neither Martinez, nor Williams simply because he is one of the greatest COWARD in american boxing history.

  • maxribar says:
