Pacquiao vs. Tszyu and Julian Jackson: Who wins?

By Dave Lahr: Manny Pacquiao gets a lot of credit for being a powerful puncher and a talented fighter with the ability to move up in weight classes successfully. However, I wonder what Pacquiao would have done had he fought a prime Kostya Tszyu and Julian Jackson (55-6, 49 KOs) in a hypothetical match up.

Before anyone dismisses Jackson as being too big a fighter for Pacquiao, let me remind you that Jackson was a junior middleweight in his prime and this is the weight class that Pacquiao may move up to for a fight against World Boxing Association light middleweight champion Yuri Foreman in the future.

I think Pacquiao will beat Foreman if and when he chooses to fight him. However, I’m less confident that Pacquiao would have been able to beat Jackson. I suspect that Pacquiao would have major problems with the crushing power of Jackson, and I can see this fight ending suddenly with one punch with Jackson flattening Pacquiao early in the fight. It would be a great for a couple of rounds.

I can see Pacquiao going right after Jackson and trying to unload on him with fast flurries. But I think Jackson would catch Pacquiao with a huge right hand just like Julian did against “Terrible” Terry Norris and knock him cold early in the fight. At best, I can somehow see Pacquiao lasting four rounds. Pacquiao would have a better chance of surviving if he stayed away from Jackson, but eventually “The Hawk” would catch him with something big and put him out of his misery. You have to remember that Jackson had one punch power in both hands. Most of Jackson’s fights ended with him landing one huge bomb to take out his opponents. He didn’t need to land flurries like some fighters, because his huge power was enough to end the majority of his bouts.

As for Tszyu, when he was in the prime of his career, there was probably no harder puncher from the light welterweight to the welterweight divisions than him. Tszyu could throw big shots with very little windup on his shots. He didn’t need to put him whole body behind his punches like most fighter do, because he was able to generate a lot of power just from his arms.

In a fight with Pacquiao, I think Tszyu would have too much power for Pacquiao to deal with, and I can see this ending in an early knockout as well. Tszyu always fought in a relaxed manner and was quite skillful in eluding pressure fighters like Pacquiao. I think if Pacquiao rushed Tszyu like he does with most of his opponents, I think it would have ended badly for Manny. I see Tszyu hitting Pacquiao with a hard right and stunning him like Tszyu did with Zab Judah in their fight.

I can’t believe how naive some people are. There is no way that Pacquiao would even consider fighting Julian Jackson much less beat him. Freddie Roach would never had allowed it. If Kostya could catch Zab Judah, you better believe he would definitely catch Pacquiao. It is foolish to say that Pacquiao would destroy Kostya, you people are crazy. Let’s keep it real. Pacquiao has not defeated any fighter in their prime much less in their natural weight classes besides Marquez and even that was a huge task for Pacquiao. Terry Norris, Donald Curry, Marlon Starling, Aaron Pryor, Mike McCullum, James Toney would had been more than a match for Pacquiao. These guys were monsters next to Manny. Remember Julian jackson fought Gerald McCleclan another monster. Manny is good but people are getting way too carried away with this stuff. Most of Manny Pacquiao fans seem to have very little knowledge of boxing or otherwise they would not make the ridiculous statements that they make. These fighters that Manny has fought and defeated were not in their prime and fought at a disadvantage. I didn’t make that claim, Freddie Roach did, so argue with him. I don’t know what Shane Mosley has left, hopefully not much for Mannies sake. But if Shane rises to the occasion and is able to give one more ggod fight, I predict that Manny will have a very long night. he might even lose.

the thing about Manny is he’s never been hit as hard as someone like Tszyu, maybe the only time Manny was KO”d as a flyweight, but here recently he has never felt the Tszyu liver punch which would slow him down immensely. I think if Tszyu made a mistake he could get ko’d also, but Tszyu is def. the stronger of the two.

  • Lucius says:

Tszyu in his prime would have torn Hatton apart in the same way Manny did, make no mistake about it.

Tszyu technically limited? An amateur World Champion? Have you seen the final with Vernon Forrest? A lesson in counter-punching? Even way past his best, he still gave Hatton an idea of what timing and accuracy at that level is about. Yes he did rely a lot on his awesome power (who wouldn’t..) but please do not say he was technically limited as it’s nonsense.

A fight with Manny is too close too call, both would have a very, very tough and rough night.

    @ricky

if pacman is using drugs, why start only with the dela hoya fight or the hatton fight. why not from the very start.
or your thinking, if he wins his on juice, if he lose, the juice did not made an effect. is that it? pacman took the dela hoya fight because his trainer knows dela hoya could not keep up with pacmans speed. if pacman is on drugs, why not let penalosa use the same thing so he was able to beat juan manuel lopez and score the greatest upset in history same with mosley and margarito.

the thing is even if they were all be put in some cyro freezer and wait till all of them are aged 30 or say 28. pacquiao would still have an edge. he floored marquez 4 times. and marquez only manage to daze him in some lucky shot. pacman beat marquez in both occasion, probably both in 1 point advantage, but still a win. juice or no juice. its all about how you managed to throw the punch. all of them 9xcept the bitter marquez) admits they hardly see where are pacmans punches coming from.

Oh man, I’m in my early 20′s and I can remember Kostya Tszyu killing Zab Judah in 2 rounds. I think Kostya Tszyu may beat Manny Pacquiao in a very exciting fight!

You’re brilliant, Dave Lahr, wow. you’re making my mind boggle right now, imagining a battle between Tszyu and Pacquiao.

I remember thinking that Kostya Tszyu lost to Ricky Hatton because of 1. Hatton’s home Court, 2. Hatton’s dirty, okay, too much physical tactics, and 3. Kostya Tszyu looked beyond Hitman because I remember him saying that if he beats Hatton, he wants Oscar De La Hoya next.

  • Nathan says:

Ricky and James are probably the same person or boyfriends, I can’t tell yet but ‘they got each others backs’

    Manny on roids? No proof

Manny is the best? Matter of opinion, but he is def an exciting fighter who has taken on some big names with awesome outcomes.

Whoever Manny fights, it will be worth watching.

Enjoy the Manny show because it won’t be airing much longer.

What are these nutz here comparing boxers of the past era and the present. You can not say whos gonna win unless they actually meet face to face in the ring. What I suggest you nutz are doing is guessing, dreaming something happens to be true which is actually not and not even happened. No wonder you nutz when you hear some speculations from idiot crazy retarded mind you believe as it is really true.

Well to add to your thoughts, Tszyu is too slow for Manny. Manny may not knock him out but his face will be flooded with Manny’s rapid punches.

  • f4f says:

    tszyu, the one fraud avoided?

  • benjam says:

what a world ? What a pride & ego…could we not go down to our senses?with all d mediation 4 d sake of the whole boxing enthusiast? Well that’s life part of the game.we pray they gonna met someday when our will to watch no more.thanks anyway more power to both of you guys…

  • Oli says:

Pacquiao vs a prime Tszyu at 140? Kostya would knock manny out.

And by the way the tsyzu what hatton beat…was 4 years past his prime

  • camansi. says:

Everyone has a plan ’till they get punched in the mouth…mike tyson

  • Marcus says:

Tszyu could beat him and here is a simple reason why:
Pac likes to come straight in and jump forward because his reach isn’t great. With Tszyu, his best punch is his straight right down the middle. He also has a solid jab and a short-left-hook off that jab…all powerful. People forget that Tszyu was on the declined for a long time because of his long amateur career that had wear and tear and then inactivity levels as a pro which included many injuries. He slowed down and became stiff but in his prime he was very fast, sharp, and even elusive. When he fought Judah, people were already saying he was past his best which is why Judah, who even said Tszyu was past his best, was the favorite.

You can’t throw wide punches against Manny. Right down the middle, that’s what you need. Nobody did it better at 140 than Tszyu with is timing, speed, accuracy, and power in his prime.

come on folks. this is boxing. anything can happen. i’m tired of all these “hypothetical analysis”; it doesn’t mean anything. i just wish that boxers just fight like football or basketball – you get to face everyone and at the end of the season let the best 2 get it on. This way Floyd the Fraud will find himself not even making the playoff. I wonder . . .

  • ray gordonreid says:

time 6.50 am thursday january 7 2010 manny pacquiao over tszyu or julian jackson manny yuriforeman manny

  • mark fletcher says:

instead of matching pacman to Jackson, how about a harder hitter like Gerald McClennan who twice destryed JJ

  • laoldskool says:

Ok congering JJ over Pac is soo cliche!! Pac vs Tzyu is kinda corny cuz he was an old brawler to begin with, he was definetely old vs Hatton. But Pac does have skilz even with the alleged roids. His DNA makeup allows for him growing bigger with age, as did Duran, Hearns, Robinson, Leonard and even Roy Jones. Roids don’t get you to throw double jabs and uppercuts followed by a cross with either hand …. with accuracy!
I wouldn’t doubt there was some help given based on a need to mend muscles during training. Yes MayW probably is casual user. But don’t you ever think the senior MayW’s are on crack, crackheads don’t sport 20 year olds bodies w/ 60 year olds faces, just 60 year olds faces! They’re just ugly!!!
This whole off again-off again fiasco is like old WWF/WWE old skool wrestling.
Boxing marketing is old & decrepid like Arum and the leader of GBB, they lack finese and credibility…. and we fans fall into it like gradeschoolers at an after school fight. But if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, but if it don’t need fixin play the “Roid” or “Race” card to sell more tickets.

  • hbstowe says:

too bad for mayweather there is no drug for cowardice. mosley end up as the winner. if mosley beats berto he will be in a mega fight with pacman. if he gets beat up by berto badly. mayweather will surely fight him.

  • Boxing Genius says:

Hey its official! Mayweather JR gets his drugs from Daddy who then gave it to Roger. Did you know Daddy Mayweather went to jail for his son cos it was Jr that was dealing and he did not want his son to ruin his life so he admitted to owning and dealing. I dont know if Pacquiao is on roids but one thing for sure, Mayweathers are drugf*cked crackheads. Just look at the way Floyd sr and Roger talk? if that’s not on crack then what is???!!!

CONCLUSION: EPO & HGH does not promote additional strength and endurance on athletes (Below is the explanation) . That is why NEVADA-SAC only conduct urine test. Blood test to detect HGH and EPO is not necessary.

EPO effect is for the survival of red blood cells thus being used especially by patients with anemia caused by kidney disease. So it is justifiable to say that it has no positive effect on athletes because being a healthy person they don’t need the aid of EPO to make their red blood cells survive within their system.

HGH: From the studies conducted by Stanford University School of Medicine in 2007, though it shows that HGH can increased muscle size and decreased body fat THEY ALSO FOUND OUT IT DOES NOT PROMOTE ANY ADDITIONAL MUSCLE STRENGTH because it only let the body to store more water in the muscles. So the effect is clear HGH promotes water retention on muscles that is why there is a gain in muscle size.

(reference: wikipedia.com & various fitness book)
note: no one in the history of olympic that a fighter was caught using HGH

Hatton beat Tszyu in a ugly fight. Then Hatton gets ktfo by Manny in 2 rounds. Despite the above point its pretty straight forward Manny would tear these men to shreds. Now i don’t like jumping on a fighters fan bandwagon but, Manny is not just a bum-rusher and although he does have that “attack with a million punches” attitude he moves incredibly well around the ring and i think that at the moment it would really take something to beat Manny. I mean i really respect Cotto and i was hoping he would do well against Manny but what transpired really made me wonder about just how skilled our little or should i say little big Pacquiao is. The answer is very skilled.

  • dan says:

jackson could only win if he landed a lucky punch like against herol graham…& frankly pac has a better chin than graham.

tszyu is one of my all time favourite boxers…but i can’t pick him over pac. in fact…you’re crazy if you think he beats pac.

  • Chicken Run says:

Hey dave! i’ve heard manny will fight vitali and wladimir at the same time! haha! hilarious!

  • Alexander says:

I am Australian and therefore was behind Kostya in all his fights, but he was never a talented fighter, he only ever moved one way, and that was forward, granted he had a massive punch buts thats all he had, Manny would destroy him just as Zab Judah would have had he stayed down for the count and had the bell saved him as it would have but his inexperience got him to his feet to quickly, Manny would make minced meat of Kostya….whoever you are you certainly are not a boxing fan for this article shows you know nothing at all about boxing.
