Pacquiao vs. Clottey prediction: Look for Joshua to shock the world by stopping Manny

By Esteban Garduno: I hate to say this but I think Manny Pacquiao has finally met his match against 32-year-old Joshua Clottey. This is a case of Pacquiao facing someone too big, too strong and too skilled defensively for him to win. Think of Clottey as tank with heavy armor and Pacquiao as an infantry soldier with rifle, a knife and a shovel. With those crude tools, there’s no way that a soldier is going to be able to get through the armor of that tank without the use of a mine or rocket propelled firing weapon.
Clottey may be a beatable fighter against tough welterweights like Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. The reason those guys were able to beat Clottey is because they knew how to get to his soft underbelly and beat him by out-working him with a massive amount of punches. In doing so, Cotto and Margarito took an enormous amount of punishment from Clottey in beating him.
Margarito’s face was a blood red by the time the fight ended from all of Clottey’s shots he hit him with, and Cotto’s face was a bloody mess from the punches he took from Clottey. In both cases, Margarito and Cotto had to pool every ounce of energy they had in their bodies to beat Clottey. It wasn’t easy but they got the win. But I think Pacquiao’s small body won’t be able to hold up under the heavy fire from Clottey and I see a break down occurring.
In moving up weight to take on bigger and bigger fighters, Pacquiao has pressed his body to the upper limits of what it’s capable of in beating Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Cotto. He’s done a remarkable job with beating these bigger fighters. But I think Pacquiao is going to enter into his equivalent of a Waterloo in facing Clottey and will find himself being beaten back by Clottey’s powerful armament.
Here’s how I see the Pacquiao-Clottey fight going:
Pacquiao’s shots will bounce off the gloves and the hard head of Clottey without making a dent. If anything, I see Clottey smiling though his gloves at Pacquiao after being hit with his shots, letting him know that he’s not affected by his shots. In the meantime, Clottey will continue to walk Pacquiao down and rain hooks and right hands on Pacquiao.
I see this fight getting quickly out of hand early on after Pacquiao sees that his punches have no effect on Clottey. I’d say by the 3rd or 4th round, Clottey will start softening Pacquiao up with laser right hands to the head that will have Pacquiao face starting to bruise and turn red. Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, will frantically bark at him telling him to stay away from Clottey’s massive power shots.
But instead of playing it safe on the outside, Pacquiao will tempt fate by going straight into the teeth of Clottey’s offense and find himself taking withering fire from all angles from the bigger and stronger Clottey. Things will quickly get out of hand at that point with Clottey backing a now retreating Pacquiao across the ring hammering him with shot after shot to the head.
I see Roach losing his senses completely as he rapidly spits out useless directions in rapid fire succession that Pacquiao won’t hear because of the screaming from the thousands of fans in the Dallas Cowboy stadium. What was thought to be a good thing by crowding a 65,000 backsides into the stadium will work against Pacquiao and Roach, because Pacquiao won’t be able to hear Roach’s priceless pearls of wisdom, such as ‘cover up’ and ‘get out of there’.
It will be no use. Clottey, sensing that he has a weakened prey, will pounce on Pacquiao and batter him to pieces with one huge shot after another as Pacquiao tried to cover against the ropes. Finally, after Clottey lands a finishing left hook to the head, it will send Pacquiao down on the canvas where he will quickly be counted out by the referee.

Clottey is no fighter neither is he a boxer. This was the fight of his life. This was his chance to become big. Instead he just covers up his face, hunches over and tries to hide. A fighter, warrior, or boxer would have taken the opportunity presented and given it his all. A true fighter would not allow the moment to slip past. Sure he wasn’t knocked out but getting to the end of the fight by just covering up is not a fighter. The best moves he had all night was when he was dancing during his entrance. Like someone said he just showed up to collect a paycheck. He should be banned from boxing. Boxing has no place for people who do not want to fight.

Ok, so now, what can you say about the fight? Clottey was not like a tank, he’s like a giant clam being pummeled by hammer. It was more like a sparring session for Pacquiao. Agility dominates strength. Clottey have the latter. Pacquiao has both.

If Clottey can deflect/withstand PacMan’s shots for the first 3 rounds, they won’t bother Clottey in the next 9 rounds.
In which case, Pac will have to go for a points victory.

Can’t see how Clottey can be anything but a massive underdog for this fight. It isn’t about Manny’s profile, its about how devastatingly good and untouchable he has looked in his last few fights. Cotto hit Manny with some tough shots but Manny was happy to trade with him. i think we’ll see a much smarter fight by Pacquiao this time where he will use his speed and footwork to take minimal punishment. History has shown us that speed and movement will win the day; unless Clottey can dominate with his jab which I just don’t see happening. And as backup, Pacman has a good chin so Clottey will hit him with one good shot but open himself up to 2 or 3 dangerous shots in reply. OK you Pacamaniacs it’s time to take off your rose colored glasses. Oscar was a dehydrated walking corpse (Even Freddie Roach said it). Hatton was a 140 pounder who arguably may be one of the most overrated fighters of this era (Freddie also admitted this truth). Cotto was so damaged psychologically as soon as he got hit he went into survival mode.
All the “Big” men pac man has fought have been damaged, Clottey is not, it will be a long punishing night for Manny. Have you forgotten that Clottey nullified the speed of Zab Juda? Zab would be world champ if fights were 4 rounds, he out speeded Money Mayweather for the first few rounds.
Do you remember that J.M. Marquez gave Manny all he could handle ( not once but twice)? How slow and ineffective did Marquez look against Money? Size and styles my friends make fights.

Clottey can win. This article may have been designed to attract readers but it does have some valid points. First, this is the first time Manny is fighting at welterweight without forcing the opponent to a catch weight. Cotto and De La Hoya both came in at weights they had not fought in some time. And if you ever boxed you understand a few pounds makes a huge difference. Second, Clottey has better defense than either Cotto or De La Hoya. Third, Clottey is expected to be at 160 lbs. on fight night. Fourth, he has fought volume punchers much bigger than Manny. Margarito throws 100 punches per round. Although he is not as quick as Manny, Margarito’s punches do take their toll. And Clottey may have fought Margarito with loaded gloves. Clotey’s biggest liability is that he does not throw enough punches. For this reason I expect Manny to win a decision. But I can also see the fight going the other way if Clottey can increase his punch output. Definitely Pacman’s most dangerous fight.

So there is a lot of talk about Clottey being too big, we should put that to rest, Pacquiao has proved that size is not going to be the issue, especially in his last fight against Cotto. That said, Clottey is powerful, and if he can find a way to land a couple of big shots in each of the first 4 rounds he will have manny in a little bit of trouble, potentially leading to a stoppaage.
The real test of this fight will be in aggressiveness. Clottey is a good counter puncher, if he gets the opportunities, but the wiley defense and unmatched foot speed of the Pacman will confound the much larger and slower fighter. We will watch pacquiao walk through clottey’s jab and unload a quick combo before escaping to safety on the outside. Clottey will come forward looking for the counter but Pacquiao’s lateral movement will prevent the larger fighter from setting his feet and delivering with his true power.
If clottey wants to win he will have to make this a fight in straight lines. But pacquiao is going to work the whole fight to ensure that it is a fight of angles. Clottey will be fighting at welterweight which is his preferred weight class granted, paquiao has experiance at welterwight and is the naturally the smaller fighter. But the facts are the fact, Paquiao is a volume puncher, he stood toe to toe with cotto and took more punishment than cotto gave to clottey and walked away from it looking untouchable. Paquiao has better hand speed and co-ordination, he has been foot work and also has the ability when he is not volume punching to work on the back foot to throw a decent counter punch as demonstrated by his fight with Hatton. Clottey defense is fair but he is too rigid and basically covers his vision when blocking tough shots and is a habit he’s had for years. I think Clottey will give paquiao a fight certainly, but Clottey’s chances are not enough to say he will win. However we could see it go all the way because as the writer pointed out, Clottey is a tank of a welterweight and I feel he can go the distance having never been KO’d before. It all depends on his defense and how he copes with paquiao’s flurrys.

No doubt Clottey’s a tough/ well ranked fighter but Pacquiao’s in a league of his own right now. Clottey gave Cotto a hard time, but even with a bad cut caused early in the fight by a headbutt Cotto saw it through and eventually came out on top. Five months later Pacquiao Vs Cotto, same story Cotto’s too big, too strong. What happened? Manny didn’t just beat him, he BEAT HIM UP! While it’s certainly within the realm of possibility that Manny could take Clottey lightly (since he just beat the man that beat Clottey) and get caught, I just don’t think it’s wise to bet against Pacman right now – he’s on fire! One thing is for sure, Clottey is better than anybody Floyd Mayweather has ever fought at welterweight and that’s sad. In fact, when calcuating all factors of an opponent (the importance of the fight, the ranking of the opponent in the fighter’s weight class, the opponent’s chance for victory, etc), Pacquiao-Clottey is a better, tougher fight than Floyd has had since he fougth Jose Luis Castillo back in 2002! This article is good on two levels…
1) It shows that Manny may not have taken a walk-over fight in spite of “The Fight”.
2) It also shows that on any given night, two fighters might collide in unexpected ways. To be honest, that was what happened when Pacquiao fought Barrera. You saw it when Rahman flash KO’d Lewis. We saw it when Mayorga was too much for Forrest.
However, I don’t think Manny has the deficiencies you outlined here. I think he has the ability to adjust his strengths in training camp for every fight he’s been in. He worked on timing his counter right against Hatton, he focused on two-handed effective aggressiveness with Cotto.
And I think he and Freddie will work on a gloves-up bait and switch style where Clottey comes in to trade (maybe even rope-a-dope), and Pacquiao looks for pot shots from odd angles up until round 5 when Clottey’s output slows and Manny can step it up.
I think Manny will get bloodied, I predict a head butt cut, but I also predict Manny will not be wobbled, and will score a knockout win. If it’s an early knockout it will be a counter shot in between Clotteys vulnerable aggressiveness. If it’s a late knockout it will be Manny’s ring generalship which gets it done.
You forgot to talk about Manny’s foot work though Esteban. You underestimate how much that affects the cadence of a match like this. With heavyweights, sure, a guy with good footwork might walk himself right into a corner. But at welterweight, I feel being able to move to your strong side, hit and get out of the way, and time your punches (Mayweather fans should know about this) will outweigh brute strength and venom every time.
And we don’t have to talk about Manny’s speed advantages, do we?

I helped trian Clottey at Gleasons and at Johns Gym in Bronx under a main trainer.. Clotty has one problem, he likes to make excuses and blames other people i.e. his trainer. He should have beaten Margarita and he did beat Cotto…However, i agree with the article, Pacman cannot under any circumstances beat Clottey. Infact, he wont even touch him and if he does it wont have any effect..

It only takes one “sticky bomb” on the tracks of a tank to derail it! The funny thing is just like a punch you dont see coming, the driver of the tank never sees the bomb stuck to his tracks until he goes up in flames. Perhaps it will be a tough fight, actually i hope it is but to think Clottey will “route” Manny is bordering on optimism.

Anazing article but it clearly shows you have no idea what boxing is and therefore should not be commenting about boxing. Try to consider another job. Why do I say these? Its because it can be done. This is not the first time a smaller guy can defeat a bigger guy. It happened countless time before and it seems you dont know about it. Does the name Mike Tyson means anything to you? Tyson is 5’10″ and knocking down 6’3′-6’5″ heavyweights. So it can be done. Besides, if Pacquiao loses this bout, at least its not from a bloated lightweight or Featherweight and for sure he’ll fight to the very end.
there are a few things i dont agree with this article, bt one thing that has proven true is that styles make fights. and i think clotteys style will give pacquiao a tough time. I agree that clotteys defense is extremely well which will make pacmans night alot tougher and it is also tru that clottey can take hits. I’m a huge cotto fan and there where things cotto could have done to win if he had a real trainer but i wont get into that. Shamefully i will say that clottey will be a tougher test that cotto was and might shock the world. Im not hatting on pacman but if you look at his history and how he naturally is a light weight who has lost before and gotten knocked out before by lighter guys who have to wonder how much pacmans body could take. His last 3 fights have been against 3 guys that are naturally about 25 to 30 pounds heavier than the guys who beat pacman or gave him trouble including knocking him out. I dont think pacman can tempt logic or science anymore, his body wont take anymore punishment and ether pacman wins by decision but retire, or move back down or he looses

i like this fight. clottey has a chance given that he is almost built to give pac problems at welter. imo clottey beat cotto too. a tough fight against a natural welter with a rock chin & a decent dig. real boxing fans know that pac is taking a huge chance & the risk/reward ratio is greater than most guys in his position would take on.

One was the report from the philippines that he was staying out late into the wee hours of the morning playing money games and billiards and the shorter time to train for this fight will surely take its toll.This is the best time to bet against him with the odds at 4 to 1.

I have seen a couple of Clotteys fight … very impressive … the only thing I notice is he seem to lose steam after the six and seldom throws any …if he did keep up the pace with cotto i think he could have won but he just followed him around.
If Pacman keep up his stamina against clottey he will get him..the first few rounds are critical after that its pacmans ballgame.
Clottey needs to throw more and keep up his stamina otherwise pacman will win.
