Pacquiao named Fighter of the Year and Fighter of the Decade – News
By Esteban Garduno: World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KO’s) has been named Fighter of the Year for 2009 for his wins over Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.
The voting was done by the Boxing Writers Association of America. Also, Pacquiao has been selected as the Fighter of the Decade – 2000-2009.
Additionally, there are some people who think that Pacquiao lost to Marquez in 2008, a fight in which Pacquiao won by a 12 round split decision. Calzaghe was unbeaten during the entire decade, as well as his entire career. He certainly deserved a good hard look when it came to the voting.
As for the 2009 fighter of the year, unbeaten super middleweight Andre Ward also was one to consider giving the award to. Ward defeated knockout artist Edison Miranda and WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler. At the time that the young 25-year-old Ward beat Kessler, the Danish fighter was considered to be the best fighter in the division and was picked to be the winner of the Super Six tournament.
Pacquiao defeated Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto in 2009. There are many people who say that neither fighter is at the top of their game anymore. Indeed, Cotto had been beaten badly only a year earlier in 2008 by Antonio Margarito, and had looked poor in a subsequent fight against Joshua Clottey in 2009. Hatton had been knocked out by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007, and staggered badly in a fight against Juan Lazcano in 2008.
Hatton had been going up in down in weight between fights and had recently picked up a new trainer in Floyd Mayweather Sr. at the time that he fought Pacquiao. As you can see, this award could have easily have gone to another fighter. Another fighter who might have deserved the fighter of the decade award is Mosley. Shane has wins over Oscar De La Hoya, Fernando Vargas, Luis Collazo and Antonio Margarito, among many others. He’s won titles in the welterweight and light middleweight divisions.

@dishonest pac fan
I may not be as knowledgeable as you when it comes to boxing but atleast I know my values…
Maybe you should go back to your mama’s womb and come back out when you finally realize that there is a new world and a new boxing regime and the man on top is just a lowly asian.
@omar jones
i would like to envite everyone to a prayer for mr. jones for he is tormented mentally, for what ever reason he is trapped underneath his skin in deep torture. Amen!
@honest pac fan! shutup! you only know about pacquiao and know nothing about boxing……go back to driving your boss’ jeepney and tricyle!!!!
Jake04..as for you..go suck a fat one!
Yo Omar..no need to bring up the whole race bit..I’m black too but your comments are a bit over the top..this has NOTHING to do with color man…this is about who is better and color has nothing to do with it!!
Floyd has a better case, Floyd has been dominating the sport for ever. Evrybody knows this was a gimmie to pac. Pac didn’t come into his own until 2007, quit playing. This was another slap in the face to the boxing community, no way in hell he should have been given this award.
PS: Wanted to say solid post!

He’s the most exciting fighter and still fighting so he gets the nod. Mayweather has a good case, especially if you remember his win over Corrales was in that decade. He followed that by completely cleaning out 135, winning two belts in three fights at 140, then cementing his status as the #1 p4p before his 21 month hiatus. However, he’s too good. When you look great some will downplay your opponents in hindsight. Also, Hopkins certainly has an argument to be made for him, too. Beating Echols, Joppy, Trinidad, ODLH, Winky Wright, and schooling Antonio Tarver and Kelly Pavlik despite being quite the underdog in both. His two losses against taylor were very controversial, his only certain loss being to Calzaghe, and that was still a close fight.
Just a thought…could it be that everyone loves a story of overcoming the odds to become champion..ala Rocky however Rocky was by no means the best fighter.
Nothing against Pac but he just really became an overnight sensation!
i got one word for you”BOGUS”
@buck/roadkill: Funny list you have there considering Mayweather has not fought any of them and has been in the welterweight division for over 5 years, but yet he is at the top of your list. Pacquiao just came into the division recently and you expect him to fight everyone on your list. Has Mosley fought anyone on that list?
If do not believe he is a Fighter of the decade, then show me any boxer that won so many title belt in a 10 year span. Do you think these champion who used to hold this belt that is now belonged to Manny are just a bunch of sisi? These people you put on the list Mr. roadkill, are they even come close to the amount of belt that Manny earned in a decade?
Pacman is sooooooo goooood Flo thinks he’s on steroids. Must really be that good to have that super powers. Sooooooo good. Fantastic. Super. Wow. Condemed by many not because of gmbling, alocohol, domestic violence, or anything else….but criticized by many for being sooooo good, he is unbelievable. Congrats Pacman!
Manny a Fighter of the Year, I guess Floyd can handle that. A Fighter of the Decade, what do you think Mr. Floyd. Can you handle that someone is better than you, better do something about that. It’s intriguing, don’t you think.
People tune in to watch Pacquiao to see an exciting fight involving an exciting fighter.
People tune in to watch Mayweather to see a trash-talking, boring, skillful fighter get beat.
That’s why Manny is at the top and Mayweather is Top 5.

“It’s a subjective thing, because some people might feel that the unbeaten Calzaghe or the forever young Hopkins might have better deserved the award.”
“Additionally, there are some people who think that Pacquiao lost to Marquez in 2008.”
“As for the 2009 fighter of the year, unbeaten super middleweight Andre Ward also was one to consider giving the award to.”
“Pacquiao defeated Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto in 2009. There are many people who say that neither fighter is at the top of their game anymore.”
“As you can see, this award could have easily have gone to another fighter.”
- Some great reporting, Tex. Can you think of any other reasons why the voters are wrong, and any poll praising Manny Pacquiao should be overruled?
I’ll be sure to keep an eye on your unbiased announcements, though I have a feeling I don’t need to read any prediction posts involving Pacquiao from you in the future, as I’m pretty sure which way your prediction will go.
A word of advice: the next time you want to put together a backhanded article like this, at least have the decency to turn it into an opinion piece instead of a reporting of facts. Here’s how your article SHOULD have looked if you kept to the facts:
.
“World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KO’s) has been named Fighter of the Year for 2009 for his wins over Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Other fighters who were in the running for that award was Bernard Hopkins, Joe Calzaghe, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosley and Marco Antonio Barrera.”

Well desrved for Pacquiao although i believe Calzaghe would be a close joint second with PBF.
maybe fighter of the year ….certainly not decade !! he lost to a couple of nobodies and got beat by jmm twice !! shoot he hasnt even FOUGHT the best fighter yet..
Mr. Garduno
Thanks for putting in your byline. Are you reporting a news as in Boxing News 24 or you are putting in your spin? It is obvious in your write-up that you are biased against Manny Pacquiao. Even then, your arguments doesn’t seem to hold water among your peers for they voted against your choices. Your rationalization of the voting being subjective shows your being an absolute sour-grape. SINCE WHEN DID VOTING BECOME OBJECTIVE?
pac man is the DADDY GO PACMAN!!!!
Manny Pacquiao a “Fighter of the Year”. What do you say, Floyd? I guess you can live with that, right? A “Fighter of the Decade”. Now, that is too much, what do you say about Manny. Just congratulate him, Mr. Floyd or face him in the ring and take back what you think is yours.
Fighter of the year definatly, and last year, and probably the year before.
Fighter of the decade? Id say hes as deserving as anybody else.
road kill floyd aint jack
fights smaller guys
pac takes out the bigboys.
hey rustico, do you want a rematch with pacman?
…And Pacman doesn’t trash or hold any grudge on
His opponents,he even praise them,
Like “you are still
My idol”,after defeating ODLH.
Awards after Awards!
Manny deserved it.No
Other Boxer is more fun to watch for boxing fans and non boxing fans! And he
Doesn’t choose his opponent, and just knocking them down!
Anything better than that?
I have to agree with what Wayne just said above……today Manny is on the minds of everyone…… so many thats why he’s won the decade. but if you look back he did fight the best out there and yes maybe some out of their prime but hey so was ODLH when he fought Floyd as was sweet pea when he fought Oscar so the beat goes one Way to go Manny and PS i seen the voting results on HBO and is was a land side towards Manny
Floyd has done more in the decade?Manny won 6 weight classes, effectively retired Morales(upcoming return not withstanding),Hatton( who’s return will probably be shortlived),and De La Hoya.He beat Barrera when he was considered top featherweight and he’s held 4 lineal championships.
Floyd has won 5 titles all while ducking his best competition and is only now fighting shane mosley because his back is to the wall and he has no one else he could fight without confirming that he’s a ducker.Get off the mans nuts.

Jealousy! Jealousy! Jealousy!
Go Manny! Go Manny! Go Manny! Let the jealousy of these men rut their hearts out!
WOW all those PEDs, EPO’s and steroids can really make you a great fighter!!! Congrats PAC for your great work. The important thing is DON’T get caught!! Even if you have to give up 40 million dollars.
If I fought all the 12 year olds in my neighborhood, I’d be undefeated too.
of course with all due respect for the real rustico torrecampo, he is just doing his job as a fighter and try to knock out his opponent which he did to pacman.
rustico,
i think pacman thanked you a lot, you know the song by kanye “stronger”?
something like, what didn’t kill you make you stronger.. that’s pacman’s song for you..
what a loser..
hello rustico. long time no hear. last time i saw you on tv you were selling fish balls now. how’s the cart business buddy?
an honest pacman fan, i’m inside the mind of pacquiao. he will never forget what i did to him which will eventually lead to his demise..whether you like it or not, his opponents right hands to his kisser will drop him the way i dropped him.after that you can go pick up his utin…bwwhhaaaa!! shi!!!
@ Don’t b Mad.
You should be kicked out of the game for absolute idiocy.
Floyd only dominated the first half of the decade you dope. The moment he moved up in weight and refused to fight the biggest names, and then retired, he sacrificed his chances for winning the fighter of the decade award. And while he dominated his opponents in a technical way, he never really delivered the excitement that fight fans really want and that he could deliver if he really wanted to. The fact is, he didn’t and hasn’t. Manny on the other hand, has.
You know why Nascar isn’t as big a sport as it could be? Because no one wants to see people make left turns all day. Same thing with Floyd. People don’t wanna pay to be bored. They want to see a crash.
You can make a better case for B-hop for this award than you can for either Shane or FLoyd.
You still can’t refute the fact that Manny has indeed transcended the sport in a way that the others on this list will ever do. He didn’t do it with an over-the-top personality, or even a dominating technical style. He did it by being, without a doubt, the most exciting fighter of this generation all the while remaining a humble human being.
Not to mention, since 2001 he’s beaten more Hall of fame caliber opponents than anyone else on the list, all the while transforming himself into a more complete fighter under Freddie Roach. Who else has done what Manny has done over the last decade?
Answer. No one. Besides maybe B-hop.
Come on dude. You are not in the same league as me. you’re not even in the parking lot playa.
rustico, when is your next fight?
@rusticotorrecampo
I have seen it and I can watch it all over again, knowing that you don’t even have any relevance of any sort now a days…
The question is where is rustico torrecampo?
Burried in the recesses of nothingness for all he achieved was beat a champion before he became the legend that he is…
Bwahahahah where are you rustico?
an honest pacman fan,
watch how i ktfo out of your so called hero on youtube!! you can’t be anymore honest than you are after you watch it!! mmhwa!
@rusticotorrecampo
And that’s why you don’t even smell now adays….
how can this guy who i ktfo be given these awards when all he’s been doing is fighting a bunch of bums and has beens…i guess since he has so many followers who don’t even understand the sport of boxing that they the writers gave it to him because of his popularity…
@Dont be mad
The only reason that you think Manny has not dominated is because he wasn’t as popular then. It’s really not that easy to become popular when you are not american… I’m not pulling the race thing, this is just fact. Apart from the people who beat pacquiao including Morales, and his war against Marquez, watch all his fights again, and tell me he didn’t dominate all of them.
When it comes to boxing awards it’s not really subjective. Whatever Bob Arum wants he gets. Reality means nothing in the boxing world. In the decade u have two unbeaten fighters, Mayweather Jr. and Joe Calzaghe and who do this bunch of con men passing themselves as sport writers choose, Pacquiao. He has been knocked out twice had 2 draws has been beaten once by decision and thats not counting 2 looses to Marquez. HBO, Bob Arum, Bert Sugar and the rest of the rift raft that calls themselves boxing experts are only proficient at turning boxing upside down. They serve their own greed and act in collusion to control the minds of those boxing fans who don’t know any better. Pacquiao refuses Olympic Style drug testing and is picked as the fighter of not only the year but of the decade. This is an incredible insult to the fans who support boxing and should result in a backlash against Bob Arum Promotions and his bought and paid for lackeys.
Phoocquiao I’m gonna take this the football route and throw the penalty flag on you. Violation is stupidity. You are no longer to speak foolishness for at least the next hour. In your stupidity you actually validated the point, no one on that list has beaten Floyd or Shane, however due to Floyd and Shane BOTH being around dominating for much longer, either one of those two should have beat Pac out for the award. However lets not forget the Calzaghe, or the Marquez (who took Pac to hell and back) or the Executioner B-Hop, these guys were doing it big way before you probably paid for your first PPV fight to see Pac. Matter of fact, 15 yard penalty on you for being foolish, first and goal me, open your mouth with nonsense again so I can beat you down for the touchdown.
@ Don’t B Mad…
“How are you the fighter of the decade when you have NOT beat the TWO TOP MEN OF THE SPORT Floyd or Shane?”
Come on man, that dumb. Who on that list HAS beaten Floyd or Shane? No one. So by your logic, no one is deserving of the award. Don’t be dumb, Pac is the clear choice for fighter of the year, not just because of the fights he has won, but also by the fashion in which he won.
Manny Pacquiao has been able to take people that would never watch a boxing match and turn them into fans. Even if it’s only for his fights, he’s enter into the public mind unlike any boxer not named Ali or Tyson. Floyd fans and Pac haters say that these fans or not real boxing fans and dismiss their opinion as being bias. But the very fact that non-fans would suddenly have an opinion is a testament to how big Manny Pacquiao has become. And the best thing is, he’s not all hype.
Say what you want about his opponents, unlike the other people on this list, Pac has gone out and destroyed his competition (with the exception of Marquez).
Finally, none of the other fighters have come close to Manny in terms of making boxing relevant again in the U.S. And the best part is, he’s not even American.
Congrats Manny Pacquiao.
Yo Esteban, if you think Manny getting the award is an outrage, you should voice out your opinion to the WBAA and make them change their deci….oh wait, your opinions are worthless.
It’s a southern thang, you wouldn’t understand. Often time, people say I got it or I heard it straight from the horses mouth. People lie right, so just because someone told you something doesn’t make it the truth, i.e. the guilt (guilty) horse. Pay a visit to Louisiana, we could sit back and discuss several things bro.
And IMHO, Pac’s selection only proves how big an impact he’s had in the sport. If May didn’t run retire during the time when there were good contenders for his belt, then he’d probably have been chosen. But he did. End of story.
What in the world is a guilt horse?
Floyd and Shane has been around forever dominating. Lets keep it real and stop the BS. Floyd was the P4P king until he went into retirement, How are you the fighter of the decade when you have NOT beat the TWO TOP MEN OF THE SPORT Floyd or Shane? We can not erase history and it’s in black and white who was and has been dominating for the past decade and if you keep it real, you can’t look a guilt horse in the mouth and say 9 years ago Pac was dominating, you can’t say 8 years ago Pac was dominating, and we can keep rewinding the timelines. Keep it simple, Pac came into his own mid 2006, early 2007 and by Mathmetics that does not come close to a decade.
If PBF went down to 130 lbs and beat JMM then he can be second as fighter of the decade.
What’s wrong you guys, Esteban Garduno is puts out this guy because he and everybody else feels the same thing. I know you guys are dissapointed that your guys are not put out because of a lot of reason 1) No entertainment value 2) Never fight hard 3) Talk bul$h1t all the time!
Where are the Mayweather fans when you need them.!
“As you can see, this award could have easily have gone to another fighter.”
Esteban, tell that to the Boxing Writers Association of America. LOL
i can see why he got fighter of the year and rightly deserve’s to be, but fighter of the decade ? Come on please that should have gone to the best of the decade the one with no defeat’s, how can he compare to calzaghe after what he has achieved?
mabuhay si MANNY PACMAN…!!!!!
it is easy for us to say that hatton and cotto are not on their peak when manny beat them. but it is actually hard for manny to gamble his health and career by stepping up and figthing them.
In your face Marquez, and *American* Mayweather!
i don’t see manuel perez anymore but suddenly esteban came into picture. Hmmm. This guy puts doubts for every news that come.
Esteban is trying to point out that there are other fighters more deserving than Pacquiao. He points out the other fighters wins are much better and tries to discredit Pacquiao’s wins.
If Pacquiao beats Mosley, they will say that Mosley is old and way past his prime. Plus Mosley already lost to Cotto, Pacquiao’s latest victim. Now Pacquiao is fighting Clottey, who people say just lost to Cotto.
I just hope Pacquiao would retire so this expert writers won’t be disappointed anymore.
kari,
the main point is to stop once and for all all mayweathers fans into believing that their man is the best..which is absolutely contradicting as to what the experts do believed..
Pacquiao knocks out Marco Antonio Barrera when he was top dog in the featherweights and Erik Morales, wins 6 different weight titles, destroys Hatton who like it or not was lineal Jr Welter champ and undefeated at his class, and takes out a top rated welterweight who had been beaten by a man with plaster in his wraps.Get off your high horse,Manuel Perez. You aren’t a decent writer, let alone one worthy of input to the boxing writers association.
a true Hall of Famer!
this is stupid! pacquiao just became famous by beating DLH and thats it! also if you put it in a decade he lost to morales look terrible against Marquez in both fights… the fighter of the decade is MOSLEY!
