Mosley vs Berto Cancelled
LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK (January 18, 2010) – WBC Welterweight World Champion Andre Berto stated in a personal press release earlier today that due to the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti and deeply affected his family who resides there, he is physically and emotionally unable to prepare for his Saturday, Jan. 30 bout with WBA Welterweight World Champion Sugar Shane Mosley and, as a result, will withdraw from the bout.
Given the close proximity to the date of the event and the difficulty in finding a suitable replacement for Berto, the event will be cancelled entirely.
All tickets previously purchased for the Mosley-Berto fight can be refunded at the original point of sale.
The thoughts and prayers of Shane Mosley, Golden Boy Promotions, DiBella Entertainment, the MGM MIRAGE family, HBO and the boxing world are all with Berto, his family and the people of Haiti as well.
Andre Berto Statement
Since the 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti on Tuesday evening, I have been focusing on my family and the Haitian people who are facing an inconceivable battle for survival while still trying to continue to prepare for an opportunity I have dreamt of since childhood. I lost several family members to the earthquake and after two days without word, was relieved to learn that my sister, Naomi and her daughter, Jessica survived, but were left homeless. I have seen the pain in my parents’ eyes as they attempt to understand what has happened to our homeland and recognize a place they once called home.
As a result of this disaster, I am mentally and physically exhausted and therefore I have no choice but to withdraw from my bout on January 30..
Throughout the past six days, I have received an incredible outpouring of support, and I sincerely appreciate everyone’s prayers for the people of Haiti. I hope that everyone will continue to keep the Haitian people in their thoughts and prayers as we work to rebuild this proud nation. The rebuilding of Haiti is not something that will happen overnight, but I am fully dedicated to helping the Haitian people recover from this catastrophic event.

Some of you people are unbelievable ,did you not read or hear the man’s statement ,this man has lost relatives, loved ones ,family members ,HELLO,for two days he did’nt even know wether or not his sister and her baby was dead or alive this may be hard for some of you to believe but athletes are actually real people with mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, sons, daughters, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends ,DAMN you can always re-schedule a damn boxing match they do it all the time there were no sporting events of any kind for at least two weeks after 9-11 remember the Hopkins/Trinidad fight? I was disappointed about the cancellation of the fight too but I completely understand his decision to withdraw at this time. some things are much more important than sporting events, like your family, he can always fight later and still donate 100% of his purse.A REAL man takes care of family and home first, prayers and blessings to Andre Berto his family and loved ones and the people of Haiti…Peace
wow this suck berto should have fought and try to bring home the gold but man if mosley and mayweather fight it’s even better…..
My heart n prayers goes out 2 Berto n Haiti. It wuz a tragic lost n I prolly would have done the same thing if I wuz berto. Its hard 2 concentrate win u have stuff like that on ur mind. Now lets talk mayweather n Mosley. Mosley knows that he just want a pay day. Also, mosley have taken steroids n he’s been beaten 5 times. Mayweather on the other hand never been beaten n he’s never taken steroids. Pac man n everyone else can just stop haten. Floyd iz the best n the bizness.
Chief- you know what…i was thinking that exact same thing! Thats what he ought to have done, not to cancel the fight.
The appropriate thing to do would have been to fight, and give 100% of his earnings back to Haiti.
Put all that emotion and frustration in the fight and win it for your country.
Isn’t that a better option than dropping out of the fight?
wow this is a shocker i hope all goes well with berto and we see him fight mosley in the future i was really looking foward to this fight to see how legit berto is… but its all good i really hope mayweather vs mosley happens
I will not fight Mosley even though his fight with Berto had been cancelled. I am protecting my 40-0 record and will not fight boxers who might defeat me.
Does this mean a mayweather – mosley on March? Go go go!!!! Bring it on!!!
take ur time bertie and when u come back give the (boxing) world hell motha quacker! i read comemnts on other sites that say he is ducking, all u guys that think this, try taking your head, turning it 180 degrees and then bend over backword and stick ur head in ur browneye. other then that speed up mosley and mayweather! p.s. early prediction, no drug testing requirements for mosley whom already tested dirty.
Does this mean that there will be Mayweather-Mosley? OMG WIN!
I hope Berto will come back to his original stance, respect.
