Mosley-Berto: Shane needs this win to get to Mayweather or Pacquiao

By Jim Dower: At 38-years-old, this may be World Boxing Association welterweight champion Shane Mosley’s last chance to get a big money fight against either Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao. But for Mosley to get to a big money fight, he will have to get by WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (25-0, 19 KO’s), a fighter that is 12 years younger than Shane and who’s fought half as many pro fights during his young six year career.

Mosley, 38, has been in against the much better competition during his career, facing the likes of Winky Wright, Fernando Vargas, Oscar De La Hoya, Vernon Forrest, Ricardo Mayorga, Luis Collazo, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito and Raul Marquez. For Berto’s part, the biggest names on his resume are Collazo, Juan Urango and Steve Forbes. As you can see, Berto’s level of competition pales compared to that of Mosley (46-5, 39 KO’s).

It would be fair to say that Berto has been brought along very carefully during his pro career and not put in with too many risky fights. That could be a blessing or a course come January 30th when he faces Mosley at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada. It could work for Berto because he’s taken very little punishment because of the relative softness of his opposition.

But it could hurt him big time because he’s going to be in for a bit of a shock when he steps into the ring against Mosley, because Shane is so much better than any fighter that Berto has ever faced before. Berto went life and death with Collazo in January 2009, beating him by a narrow controversial 12 round decision. In contrast, Mosley totally dominated Collazo in beating him by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision in February 2007.

This could be meaningless, as styles make fights, but it also could so show that Mosley is a much better fighter than Berto. We’ll see on January 30th. However, Mosley has a lot of pressure on him to win this fight. At 38, soon to be 39, Mosley doesn’t have time to rebuild from a loss to Berto and still get a shot against Pacquiao or Mayweather. It’s now or never for Mosley. He’s been waiting a long time for a fight with Mayweather, years in fact. If he blows it now by losing to Berto, you can forget about Shane ever fighting him in the future.

Berto won’t make it easy for Mosley. He has blazing fast hand speed and good power. Berto is dangerous when he’s putting his punches together when he’s at his best. He can be quite good when he throws a lot of punches. However, Berto can look really poor as well, especially lately with his habit of punching and then grabbing his opponents in a tight clinch. That style won’t work against Mosley. Berto has to do better than that if he wants to beat a world class fighter like Shane.

Floyd beat the #5 p4p in his last fight and now he’s taking on the #3 p4p. A shot Cotto and Clottey?!? i will give Manny credit when he fights top opponents. If Manny is scared of the top fighters he should just admit it. Its getting more obvious by the day.

  • Willy says:

    Berto will stop Mosley

  • lex_fugitive says:

    LMAO

  • lex_fugitive says:

everyone, look all over Mayweather-Mosley May1! What are everyone’s excuses now?? Mayweather fights the best and Manny fights second rate fighters! History repeats itself yet again! Everyone can say this isn’t going to happen, but it is everything but official!

  • Travis says:

Uh oh, now Mosley’s jinxed. He will lose the Berto fight by having this fight with Flo. What now?

  • Lou says:

Vince if Mosley dosn’t than you know he’s been using HGH to maintain his youthfulness. Actors use this stuff to remain young

  • 007 says:

Shane vs Pac-Man…. not going to happen unless he is willing to fight the loser of Clottey vs Pacquiao. I am sure a matchup against Clottey was not in Shane’s plans but it soon will be. There is that old saying… if you want to be the man… you have to beat the man. Well, Sugar Shane will be fighting the champ for the WBO welter weight title but it will not be against Pacquiao instead, glove up for Clottey! If Mosley can pull off a win against Clottey… then and only then, will he face the Wizard… Money Mayweather. But, will Sugar Shane be willing to put the title on the line against Mayweather if he wins against Clottey or will he retire???

  • Bigbasher says:

Seriously lex , you really need to check if you’re neurons are still functioning. ha ha ha

  • Manong Tagacebu says:

    hmmmm I’m rooting for mosley!

I got 50-50 chance of being right!

  • Shelton says:

Too much hype surrounding Suga Shane. He beat a man who without his handicap was above average. He still a great fighter but I believe in Berto talent so, I’m going for the upset…….Bob Arum is the devil…..peace

  • stevo says:

is it me,or does it look like mosley had had some sort of surgery on his nose????

  • cal says:

hey when did this news come out, and where can i find it!!!! mosley mayweather may 1 or april 1st for u april fools to believe this! where can i find it

  • lex_fugitive says:

In his last fight Shane looked great and I believe Ring magazine has him as a top 5 p4p fighter. I still think he’s too old, but even at 38 he is better than a Clottey! Manny wouldn’t fight Floyd so Floyd went after the next biggest name and probably a tougher foe than Manny would have been. I guess Manny can have March 13 to himself, because the big fight will be May 1.

  • lex_fugitive says:

Well word is that Mayweather-Mosley is on for May 1. Mayweather taking on Mosley and Manny taking on Clottey. Who’s ducking the best?

  • VINCE VEGAS says:

What if Shane does show signs of his 38 years in this fight? Berto will still need to fight the best fight of his life because Shane won’t go out easy.

The clinching won’t work for Berto in this fight, Shane’s seen all that BS before. He’ll use his shoulders to create pockets & upper cuts to back Berto off. Shane hits hard.

Then he picks Berto apart for the rest of the night.

I like Berto, he is fast, beautiful combinations. But, Mosely’s experience will be too much for this young gun.

  • testicularfortitude says:

If Al Haymon, who also manages Berto, is looking to protect his fighters like pbf, shouldn’t he be asking gbp/sheafer to do usada type random blood testing on their boy mosley, a known user of the clear, the cream, and epo documented through balco’s internal records ?

  • lex_fugitive says:

    wowza,
Yea, Floyd must have always been scared of a good Mosley. Thats why Floyd called him out not once but twice before Mosley lost 5 fights. Floyd challenged Mosley when Mosley was in his prime, I really doubt he’s scared of a 38 year old who is 5-5 in his last 10 fights.

  • thegreatestfight.com says:

Pacquiao will starts training after the press conference of his upcoming fight at the famous Wildcard Gym of Freddie Roach in Hollywood. It seems like Pacquiao will going to have a busy schedule again for the following weeks (does he ever been idle?).

While all of this hectic activities are happening on Manny’s camp, people are wondering about Floyd Mayweather’s plan. His camp has been silent lately, wether he is preparing for his next bout or he is currently concocting a new Anti-Pacman campain.

Whatever it is nobody knows, he always surprises us anyways…

But guess what so does Pacquiao, just in a different way.

  • Lou says:

I think Mosley will lose. He caught Margo at the right time distracted about doing time. Mosley is an over the hill over Hype roid freak

  • Ancient_Silence says:

Well if this entitles Shane to get at Manny or Floyd then we will have a fight on our hands! Shane looked great against Antonio, almost too good for an aging guy. Some accurate hooks that evening!

  • SceneSpectator! says:

Though he is with GBP, Shane may abandone this random blood checking raised by Floyd, if he would be given chance to fight Pac for the biggest payday in his boxing career! Afterall, only few believes that Pac using this PED though many wanted Pac to submit himself to this Olympic style blood testing.

  • SceneSpectator! says:

Shane needs to win for grand exit or for big payday in his final outing either with Pac or Floyd! Berto needs to win also to prove that the youngs can over power the olds, if not he would be considered still green, a once upon a time a paper champ; and uncompetitve agaisnt the topdogs!

But for Floyd and Pac, they could not gain much from Shane because if he lose to any of them that should suppose to be, people will say because he is old. But if he will win, a big seatback to Pac or to Floyd!

  • Oli says:

Shane mosley by stoppage 8-10. No problem

  • lex_fugitive says:

    wowza,
Manny wouldn’t fight Mosley at 143, so do you really think he’ll fight him at 147? Mosley was calling out Pacquiao offering to go down to 143 and Manny ignored him. If Mosley beats Berto he will get a shot at Floyd. I think Mosley would have had a chance if he would have fought Floyd when Floyd was asking for a fight, but now he’s too old. He will still get a shot though because Manny will only fight sluggers that are with Top Rank for the rest of his career and Mosley still has a pretty big name. If Mosley somehow suffers a devasting knockout against Berto than a Pacquiao-Mosley fight might be possible. That would be keeping with Manny’s history.

  • ZKO says:

I agree Amigo, Mosley-Pac would be a better fight to watch than Mayweather-Pac.

  • TaeYang says:

Sht, I hate when Berto clinches, I saw him do that in his videos, I dont think he deserves being undefeated. He makes boxing into clinching. Hit and clinch, hit and clinch. that style is making boxing ugly sport.

  • SYmpAThy says:

I HOPE MOSELY WINS. IT WOULD BE GREAT TO SEE A MEGA FIGHT AGAINST PAC OR MAYWEATHER.
BERTO IS A VERY DANGEROUS FIGHTER. SEE FIGHT COULD GO ANY WAY.

  • testicularfortitude says:

The boxing gods haven’t been kind to the sweet science…however, there maybe a change in fortune.

The constellation, if there is any justice in the fate and fortune of humanity, the constellation seems to be conspiring for a Berto win, hopefully, an emerging star in the making, assuaging the pain of living through a time when many of his family and countrymen suffered the ultimate injustice of fate’s outrageous fortune.

  • Jose SFBoxing says:

I think Mosley will pull out a win, I think he is way too expeierienced for Berto although it should be a good fight. If Mosley comes in overlooking Berto we might see an upset, thats how hall of famers are born…they surprise us against an amazing fighter.
