McGuigan: “He [Pacquiao] is a victim of his own success” – News

By Peter Wells: Irish former world champion Barry McGuigan has told Manny Pacquiao in a recent interview at The Mirror that Manny is a victim of his own success. He seems to be in favour of Manny’s point of view but says that if he has nothing to hide he should get the tests done and dusted. Barry McGuigan has been a boxing pundit for quite some time now, mostly on ITV boxing.

This is what McGuigan had to say, “On the one hand Manny is right to rail against the manipulation and interference of team Mayweather. What right do they have to request a test scheduled be imposed on Pacquiao? The cheek of it. On the other hand it leaves a question dangling in the air. If Pacquiao has nothing to fear then why not submit the tests? If mischief is what the Mayweather’s had in mind when they raised the issue, they have got what they wanted.”

“I don’t think for one minute that Pacquiao is enhanced by anything other than nature’s attributes. He is in a sense a victim of his own success. Suspicion is aroused simply because no one has done in boxing. None has carried power up from Flyweight to Welterweight in that manner. It is not just about beating, it is the way you beat them. Pacquiao went through Oscar De La Hoya like a sparring partner. The way he knocked out Ricky Hatton was staggering. He just pole-axed him. Then he systematically took apart Miguel Cotto in a way none could have predicted.”

Manny pacquiao doesn’t disagree with blood testings, what he doesn’t agree with is for the blood to be taken randomly 48h before the fight. Again, not so much difference in the time frame if you extend it 72h before the fight or 2hours before the fight has started.

@ james maybe it is more of a traumatic experience due to his 1st fight with Morales more than superstition that he dont want blood taken 48h before the fight.

@ matt, fighting foreman, pacquaio just want to try if he can still go at 154lbs and still win the belt. PBF is so much talented than Foreman is, many claim and PBF claim he is the greatest. So with that being said, Pac wanted to fight PBF @ welterweight, a division they are very comfortable. If you want to fight the best, you’ll fight him at you’re best fighting condition. @154, PBF may take away some of attributes that Pac have and put it into his advantage. But at 147, did anything from PBF was removed by pacquiao? I think none. Foreman fight might be non bearing or no loss situation for Pac, but with mayweather, this is for claiming the greatest of all time.

i love tyhis article.. you know besides the horrible ko on hatton, manny did mostly out work his opponents.. if you dont think hitting people from their blindside is not wearing opponents out, or if those blidside shots dont hurt, let someone hit u blind folded with a pillow. you will have new respect.

  • Manolito says:

Mayweather really don’t have the guts to fight Pacquiao.
He, in cahoots with his deranged father just wanted to
create a stir and paint Pacquiao dirty hoping against
hope they can catch the interest of the public thereby
making an excuse why his ward Hatton got KO’d. They know
pretty well that this might end up in a lawsuit, but they
are no strangers to lawsuit. Floyd Jr., for one got 4 open
lawsuits at this point in Clark County. Since year 2001
up to September 2009, he had a total of 13 lawsuits star-
from negligence, to gross misconduct to breach of contract. So how would you deal/sign a contract with a
person with that character. Its inutile.

  • Boxing Fan says:

Boxing fans check out this interesting interview on Mayweather http://www.zshare.net/audio/676796581a1c2a9e/
Floyd and Pac fans this will provide you some enlightenment to cease these non sense arguments.

  • LabDoc says:

I love it: Pacman standing his ground, like he does in the ring. Mayweather on the other hand, he’s doing his shoulder roll even outside the ring. Running around and looking for cheap shots. His style of boxing reflects his character. This time, he is plainly afraid to lose. If this fight happens, Manny will pour out his madness on him on the very first round. I can see Manny wanting to knock him out in the very first punch. Watch out Floyd. You don’t want Pacman get mad.

  • Philly Lou says:

Dont worry people. This fight will go on. All of this so called shenanigans is to create buzz and sell lots of tickets. It’s all about promotion!!

  • ty says:

    right on Barry.

  • aloha says:

James…If you’re fighting at Nevada (they the governing bodies who gave you license to fight there) and told you something and the same time the Mayweather team tell a different thing. Who do you thnk you’ll follow? The dictate from Mayweather or The one who gave license to fight the NSAC? That’s commonsense if you have one.

  • aloha says:

peplz.. Accusing somebody is a freedom of speech? duh. Where did your learned that? From uneducated Floyd Sr.? Tell me something if somebody accused you of taking drugs because you’re acting weird and you knew you don’t take drugs. Do you called that a freedom speech? Or you will fight for the truth?

  • ste says:

why should pacquiao dance to mayweather’s tune? Mayweather is the smaller name & is trying to play games like he always does. floyd knows the pacc man could beat him & is clearly running scared. if this fight dont happen then old money maker mayweather will only be rememberd for not fighting pacquiao. pacc man has destroyed people that mayweather has beat in better style n floyd is scared . period.

what I find most amusing is that to prove the allegations mayweather senior etc made, he’d have to prove that he’s not taking PED’s that wouldn’t show up under normal testing… Presumably by giving blood tests, and close enough to a fight that it’d catch things like HGH. So… Umm… Why is the debate happening?

  • 4080wrx says:

All this talk about accusing someone with no proof is non-sense. While we are at it let just give Olympic style drug testing to the New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Los Angeles Lakers while we are at it, since these teams have the most championships in their respective sports.

I just want to see the fight don’t care who wins or looses. I just want to see someone get knock out.

  • boxingfan#1 says:

Because of Floyd Mayweather jr. this fight will never take place. If Manny agrees to any test above and beyond what the Nevada State Athletic Commission calls for and loses, everything he’s ever done in boxing will be wiped out.He will look like a cheat.Beating PBF or any fighter in the the ring is no gimme.Anything could and does happen in the ring.So a guy that’s tested clean his whole life would be looked at as a cheat.Floyd should retire again and never come back, him and his kind are the worst thing for boxing.Lowlifes and COWARDS.

  • jeun says:

refer to this article and video to know the reason behind why Pacman does’nt want blood test too closed to the fight.

  • Matt says:

It’s funny he wouldn’t fight mayweather at 154, but would be happy at the weight against foreman…

    That’s a good point.

  • jhon foreman says:

Pacquiao “YU CAN RUN BUT U CANT HIDE” If Roach,Aurum and Pacquiao fool all the die hard fans of Pacquiao not every one will buy ur alibi, iam asking all the boxing loving people especially the one that pacquiao beat, that if this Pacquiao will not submit to blood test, let us all bring him to the Supreme Court and ask him the same question and if he refuse, we will make a petition to strip him of his belt and sue this clown, from cheeting and lying to the public.

  • Matt says:

A-Blinken – Manny has agreed to more than what you said and honestly you know nothing about steriods and PED cycling to even comment on this fact

    ….

What else has Manny agreed too?

  • Anonymous says:

Would you put something in print accusing a guy who’s suing people of doing drugs without proof? Libel laws kind of make it hard to print what you may think in the press!

If he has nothing to hide then take the test. It’s funny he wouldn’t fight mayweather at 154, but would be happy at the weight against foreman… Pac got his way on almost everything but wouldn’t take a drug test. If he’s clean fair enough, but it makes people wonder why he won’t take a test within a month of the fight when he’s taken tests closer before doesn’t it?

  • A-Blinken says:

@Liam- Stop regurgitating the same miss information around, either you have selective hearing or just plain old hater. Manny has agreed to more than what you said and honestly you know nothing about steriods and PED cycling to even comment on this fact, cause if you do you would spew that garbage here like you know what your talking about.

  • fightfan says:

To james: your statement about PEDs is unfounded to say the least. To the others criticising McGuigan for his stance: his stance seems quite clear to me. However, he IS admitting that he can see the reasons why some people would doubt Pac. I myself agree Pac is not doing himself any favours, but I think it’s more a matter of pride now. Let’s face it, it’s about time faced a little stiffness in the negotiation stage. Bottom line is, despite what all the naysayers choose to believe, the current facts are that Pac has NEVER failed a drug test. Until he does, everything else is merely conjecture.

  • Matt says:

The fact is that random drugs tests are needed in modern day athletics/sports. There is so much money involved these days that people do look for an ‘edge’ and some of those people have been exposed (and plenty haven’t). For that reason alone people shouold be proven to be clean. People argue that we should not assume the worst when we witness spectacular sporting feats. Well unfortunately that is the situation we are in because of what these people have done! Ben Johnson, Marion Jones, Barry Bonds, Shane Mosely, RJJ. Its the reality sports faces and there is no point being naive to it.

Those that are genuinely the number one in their sports accept this as a price worth paying. I read an article by Lance Armstrong saying exactly this. Same with Mark Cavendish. Now that takes random drug testing to the extreme, but they deal with it. Its the price they pay for what they do but they are compensated for that.

If nothing else I think this whole episode has proven that boxing needs to implement a stricter testing policy, instead of living in the dark ages.

As for Pacman & Mayweather, I’m just getting bored of it all now. Cant see the fight happening in March now. Maybe later in the year. Maybe not at all. I have to say that I am more than a little suspicious regarding Pacs motives for not taking the tests. And I think if everyone takes emotion out of the equation and just looks at the facts, they should be as well.

  • Mike Litoris says:

    Boxings a joke…

With the likes of Fraud and his crew to blame. LipLicker Fraud has great talents and one of them being is that he’s ‘The’ Pound for Pound best AVOIDER in history. Anyone hear of that saying ‘History repeats itself’ ? Ya, well. Say what you want about why this fight ain’t happening but one fact remains true of Fraud. Avoidance, avoidance, avoidance. Not sure who’s pulling his strings on who he fights but his record of ‘avoidance’ is stacking up close to his 40-0. Excuses, excuses Fraud.

    He’s not pay-per-view quality…wahhhhh. BooHoo.

    He’s been beaten…wahhhh. BooHoo.

He comes from a country that makes the best HGH….wahhhh. BoooHoo.

But yet you have the audacity to come out of retirement DEMANDING that you’re THE BEST. No one has beaten you blah, blah, blah… Okay, I’ll give Fraud that he’s unbeaten only coz the ‘Avoidance’ record is also unbeaten. No one else in this sport has ‘Avoided as much as this idiot. Say what you want Fraud me, me ,me’s. How long have you been retired ? Do you think the boxing world was sitting idle and waiting for your great comeback to cherry pick fighters (as usual). Unfortunately Fraud, the boxing world was on it’s way back up without you. There’s this guy nicknamed Pacman who lit it up so to speak. He’s been the talk of the town in the boxing world. Greats such as Ray Leonard have given this guy props. Seriously, google ALL the ‘Manny so called bum-lickers’ that have any clout. High praise is all I see/hear. It’s only from amateurs on here that can’t grasp the fact that with hard work and determination you can achieve your dreams. By giving back to the sport that’s made you who you are where you are in life will determine how and where your legacy stands. If it was an Ego contest, Fraud wins hands down. Manny couldn’t compete in that level. He wouldn’t know what to do. He’d be lost. But Fraud on the other hand. You are the true ‘Pound for Pound’ winner in that category. But in the end, who likes an egomaniac. I know one thing. It’s easier to stand up for a guy that doesn’t “have hisss ownss jetss”. Off topic, Manny may be from a third world country and his fans may lack the glitz and great grammatical english as of ‘most’ Frauds fans but google any of Frauds interviews. He’s the one that sounds like he’s from a third world.

Anyway, let’s see which idiot writes back and belittles me because my grammar sucked or calls me a Manny bum licker or can’t handle the truth and facts about Fraud not being the number one anymore and for whatever reason this fight doesn’t happen. Don’t forget it was Fraud who initiated the whole thing about the amateur testing procedures, which I don’t think he and Manny are…

    ding, ding…

  • cheekymonkeyyou says:

Totally agree with him to be honest…If Pac doesnt give in and get tested however Mayweather wants…if the beats Mayweather all this rubbish about drugs is going to crop up as an excuse. The bottom line is..if mayweather takes the same tests and pacquaio then its all fair and square..

  • amunks says:

this is why Manny does not want his blood drawn close to the fight. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdY1xZ3fh20

  • Jane Doe says:

    ditto.
Barry is blowing hot and cold at the same time.
No sir, Pacquiao doesn’t have to prove anything.

  • Liam Santiago's dad says:

Come on! First off Mayweathers camp asked for Random blood testing with no cut-off date, to be carried out by the USADA. Pacquiao didn’t want to be tested too close to the fight, so Mayweather’s camp said they could agree a cut-off date. Pacquaio says cut off date has to be 30 days before the fight, and all tests have to be scheduled NOT random. Steriods can be out of your system in 30 days, and scheduled tests are not effective, they can be worked around too easily by any competant PED supplier, so Mayweather’s camp say OK- lets meet in the middle. Random tests with a reasonable cut off date. Pacquiao then says he doesn’t want USADA carrying out the tests. Mayweathers camp says OK, we’ll get whoever you want to do the tests, as long as they are random. Pacquiao sues Mayweather. Arum says fight is off, organises fight with Foreman/Marquez/Malignaggi. Mayweather’s camp says hopefully fight will still go ahead, doing everything they can. Who’s the runner now?

  • manny crack cow says:

barry stop bum licking people be your own man in my eyes i dont know if pac man is on drugs and nor do i care anymore just fight hell just both inject with drugs it will make the fight amazing!!
