Mayweather should fight Paul Williams

By Scott Gilfoid: If Floyd Mayweather Jr. really wants to open the eyes of boxing fans and to win back some of his lost fans from his problems with Manny Pacquiao, he should step it up and fight Paul Williams. That might be a shocker for some, but it would be the perfect remedy to shut up Floyd’s critics and at the same time it would be a much bigger fight than the Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey fight that takes place on March 13th in the Dallas Cowboy stadium, in Texas. Mayweather needs a big named opponent and one that will give him a good fight.

The names that have been mentioned recently as potential opponents – Matthew Hatton and Paulie Malignaggi – aren’t going to Mayweather much respect from knowledgeable boxing fans. Malignaggi and Hatton are good fighters in their own right, but Mayweather needs an elite fighter to mix it up with, not someone that is middle of the pack like Malignaggi or 2nd tier like Hatton.

Paul Williams, who stands 6’1 with and 82” reach, would have a five inch height and a 10 inch reach advantage over Mayweather. But so what? If Mayweather, with his great boxing skill, was able to get past Williams’ long reach and beat him, can you imagine how much praise Mayweather would get for that? Boxing fans would literally be kissing his backside 24/7. You can’t say the same thing if Mayweather beats Malignaggi or some other fighter with less going on.

he should move up in weight to fight him where williams has been trying to go, then he’d have a better record than pac with 7 world titles in 6 real weight classes. boom.

  • rizza says:

I agree. If the Pacman fight ain’t gonna happen. Which it ain’t. Then the only opponent Floyd is gonna get credit/praise for beating right now is Paul Williams. There is no one else out there who people will give him props for beating. If Floyd beats Mosely people will acredit that to Mosely being older well past his prime, the same way he gets no credit for beating Delahoya. All the other fighters mentioned as potential opponents should be a walk in the park for Mayweather, and we all know it.

  • peplz says:

All I have to say to Duckiao fans is quack quack quack.

  • peplz says:

    @Chef

Make sure you tuck your napkin in your collar so don’t get any of that Duckiao sauce on your shirt!

  • JimP says:

Paul Williams is a freak who should be fighting at a different weight class. Why not ask Floyd to fight Valuev next. Jeez!

  • Hook&Jab says:

Should Pacman fight the punisher? So why all of a sudden Floyd should fight him. So is Pacman more of a b!#0t than Floyd since he would take the fight with floyd. Who has call out the Punisher? Nobody and it will stay that way. When pacman do then there will be a real story to talk about. He cherry picking like everybody say floyd is and avoiding the top fighter that was in his face.

  • DON KING says:

MAYB*TCH IS TO MUCH OF A PU**SIE TO EVEN THINK ABOUT THIS FIGHT.

  • Boxing Don says:

Mayweather would rather slit his wrist, then fight the punisher. First of all, Mayweather would not be able to come close to the work rate. Floyd, 40 punches a round won’t get it done. The Mayweather camp is stupid but they ain’t that stupid.

  • peplz says:

Yeah, but people will make excuses for and beg for Williams to be a welter weight again only to fight Mayweather. And its funny how people criticize Mayweather for fighting smaller guys and then actually make excuses for Williams fighting smaller guys.

  • Sauna says:

No, Floyd should not fight Williams. It’s funny how everyone mentions Floyd’s name with Williams but not Mosley, Pacquiao, Cotto or anyone else. No one wants to fight Paul at WW not even guys bigger then Floyd. The only people that really want to see this physical mismatch is Mayweather haters that want to just see him get beat up and not see a good fight. Don’t mention Paul Williams if your not going to put your favorite fighters in the same fight. Paul is a Middleweight that his the ability to make welterweight. He shouldn’t even be there.

  • SRD says:

Floyd will never ever fight paul williams, unless the aliens show up period.Floyd will never fight mosley, unless sasquatch shows up period.Sugar ray lenard fought the best of the best without requiring any test.Floyd talks too much, ali lost fights it doen’t matter if you lose a fight……

  • Deepflip says:

    @rob

    my thoughts exactly, well said!!

  • ste says:

    MAYWEATHER SHOULD MANNY PACQUIAO.

  • vendetta says:

Floyd won’t fight Paul because he know he’ll lose. Paul Williams (and i’m a big pacman fan) is the best welterweight. Paull will own Floyd…Period!

which is why this fight will never happen. Floyd will only take on people he thinks he can easily beat. Williams is too dangerous for him.

  • SYmpAThy says:

real talk , i dont think floyd could peat paul williams. williams is too much. too much pressure, too many punches, and alot of heart. great fight to see.

  • Anonymous says:

just fight the best floyd and you might win me back. i do not care if you loose “just fight” and fight again

  • Kingkong says:

I don’t know if PBF will take on William. He’s tall and with a reach advantage. and likewise will William take a blood test?

  • Hook&Jab says:

I read somewhere that Floyd is going o take a fight in March and fight Sugar if he beats Berto May 1. If thats the case he should not fight Paul William before Sugar but after. But with that said, I am a floyd fan and i think he can out box any boxer in the game but Paul would be more of a problem than Pac. Beat Magil, Sugar and then Pac and worry about Paul later.

  • Rob says:

Floyd will gain so much respect from me if he actually would fight Williams, even if he gets his *ss whooped in the process…
But this fight is NEVER gonna happen. I think Paul will sign the contract without even reading it, but even if Floyd injected his balls with xylocaine he wouldn’t dare to fight Williams.

And I can imagine why I wouldn’t either in his case… The chance of winning that bout is close to zero. But Sugar Shane should be a real option for him, but I also don’t believe that will happen either.

  • NWJ says:

I really dislike Scott, and it hurts to say this, but i actually aggree with him on this one.

As a massive Mayweather jr fan, i want him to fight the best and beat the best! He needs to walk away from Malinaggi and M Hatton and go for bigger fish (Mosely, Clottey etc.) and shut up the critics.

Pacquiao hasnt gone after small-fry (and never will) as a replacement bout, therefore Mayweather shouldnt either if he wants to cement his legacy as one of the greats.

  • chef says:

PEPLZ…WIPE YOUR FACE COZ YOU SMELL OF FLOYD “CHICKEN MAYWEATHER CRAP…

  • peplz says:

You are dreaming if you think Floyd has lost any fans over this Manny Pacquiao drug testing debacle. I’m sure that Pacquiao has and will pay a heavier price for the position that he chose to take about submitting to the random blood tests. The people that hate Mayweather now are the same people that hated him before any of this started.
And really, if Paul Williams wants to prove his detractors wrong he needs to stop trying to make a name for himself fighting guys that are barely half his size. If he wasn’t so busy trying to get over on the boxing public with his incredibly large skinniness he might be one of the competitors in Showtime’s Super Six Tournament. I mean he would be the tallest fighter with the longest reach in the whole tournament which is in the 168lb weight division. Paul Williams is no longer even trying to fight as a welter weight anyway. Floyd should just wait to see who wins the Berto/Mosely fight and make his next move from there.

  • milosands says:

I think you are right. I think Mayweather needs to fight Williams or Pacquiao to really state a claim for the p4p crown. But unfortunately he will not go anywhere near Williams, in fact Williams was possibly a reason for his early “retirement”.

When I look on boxrec and look through Mayweathers opponents compared to Pacquiao they really do not compare. De La Hoya took Mayweather to a split whereas Pacquaio retired the man. Hatton gave Mayweather the fight of his life whereas Pacquiao KO’d him in two. Marquez moved up two weights to fight an overweight Mayweather whereas Pacquiao fought him at his natural weight… and it seems welterweight suits Pacquiao more. Then who else has Mayweather fought? No-one of significance. Unlike the Barrera, Marquez and Morales wars Pacquiao was in and not forgetting Cotto.

Mayweather has never cleaned up a division and before his “retirement” there was plenty of chances and options for him. Mosley, Margarito, Cotto and Williams to name but a few. The man is fooling himself… he still has plenty to prove in this sport.

  • Thomas says:

I think Mayweather beat Pacman easy, but Clottey is a better fighter than Paul William and margarito.. So my hat is off to Pacman for chosing to fight the toughest fighter in that division.. This is not a tune up fight, this is not a pre-fight, this is going to be a fight. I got Pacman winning but there is a pretty good chance of him losing to Clottey…

  • wowzabean says:

    Chad,

Possibly but those fights would never happen. You can set up the best undercards, but let’s face facts people don’t pay to see undercards and Floyd is not gonna fight a Jr. MW.

    Sean,

Yea so what’s your point. The bottom line is Floyd was so caught up in blood tests which were unsubstantiated, while he himself was taking a painkiller that’s banned in 49 states! I don’t care whether he takes it or not, but it’s just hypocritical. He ended this mega fight over tests, so you have to understand why fans bring it up. No drugs, no blood.

  • Robert says:

Mayweather has many excuses and he is the commissioner. He will ask for more because he will brag the he is the greatest boxer in the world and maybe he will duck again when is figh will push through.Paull Williams is called the most feared man in boxing. So mayweather will engineer again for a win and have play mind games on Paul’s phobia and weaknesses. He has been give a change to fight paul williams but same as magrarito, mosley, cotto he always find a way to work away around.Bye mayweather! Your the biggest draw right now.Be a humble and down to earth person and don make excuses like manny wants out of the fight your twistng the story if you really want to fight you just fight let the commission decide the rules. You have been give 3 blood test and unlimited urine test is this not enough. If pacman is using illegal substance you can trace it after the fight because you need steroids on the day of the fight to make you strong so the next 10 mins after the fight you can clearly detect it.So i dont give damn what are you pushing to close to the fight. You just want to gain advantage.Pacquiao is a Filipino so it has also different effect to his bdy when giving blood so dont expect that all people willfeel the same when they give bllod. You just making it up so you can engineer for a sure win. Thanks

  • Zimo says:

I agree 100%. He’s next fight should be PW or an elite fighter like Mosley. Am a fan of PBFW of his boxing skills but not of his mouth. If not, he should be punish by HBO by not promoting his future fights in PPV so he will not get the MONEY he wants.

  • VINCE VEGAS says:

Willaims isn’t a big name opponent, just a big risk opponent. Floyd perfers small risks with big rewards, but who doesn’t?

Fact: Floyd has only fought two udersized guys (Hatton & Marquez) in the last two years. I really don’t know why were even talking about him any longer.

  • Lou says:

If Mayweather fights Williams he will demand that Williams will have to fight on his knees so that the fight is fair

  • Daniel Ciminera says:

for once scott, i completely agree with you. whoever mayweather fights next, needs to be a credible top tier fighter like williams.

however, do you really think he will fight williams? i don’t.

it has been written that he’s contacted matthew hatton three times and his buddy on the bandwagon malignaggi seems to want a shot. if he does fight anyone, it is likely it will be one of those two.

in my opinion, if this is all he has to offer us, he’s better off retiring again. or joining the ranks at wwe.

  • Ancient_Silence says:

Wont happen. I admire your optimism sir!

  • T-Dub says:

Naw, Pac wouldn’t even take a fight against Paul Williams, if they both ducked him, it would be for the best, I think for all you Pac fans out there, tell pac to fight Paul Williams, Paul would retire Pac Man

  • wowzabean says:

    Riley,

That’s just hilarious! I don’t care whether he uses it or not, what gets me is he gets on his high horse with the drug testing when he’s using painkillers. Too too funny, more so then ever does he look like a ducker.

  • sporty says:

now way PBF will be fighting Williams. He can inject his favorite PED XYLOCANE daily and it won’t grow back his balls :)

  • Riley says says:

    this was posted on examiner.com
    written by Scott Heritage

It has come to light today that Floyd Mayweather has used injectable pain killers such as Xylocaine in the past before fights. The irony being that this drug is illegal in nearly all states, with one notable exception, Nevada.

Perhaps the reason for Golden Boy and Mayweather not wanting to fight in Texas now becomes clear. Obviously if tested there, particularly with the extensive testing he was asking for, Mayweather would test positive for a banned substance. In Nevada, these drugs are legal, and presumably can be used for athletic competition without any legal or financial recourse.

After all the negotiating trouble and accusations about Manny Pacquiao and his supposed steroid use, it appears Mayweather is the one taking widely banned substances.

The reason for Floyd using these drugs is presumably due to the fact that his hands are rather brittle, and he has broken both several times in the past. With a numbing agent to stop his hands hurting he can throw punches more often and without fear of hurting himself as much.

Another question this throws up is whether these drugs are illegal in Olympic style testing. Presumably they will be detected in some form, although whether they are illegal or not surely rests with the Nevada State Athletic Commission rather than anything else. They are the ones after all who make up the lists of what is and isn’t allowed in athletic competition in the state. Olympic standards are different to these slightly, although anything extra testing found would surely be inadmissible against Floyd if the NSAC allowed it.

If nothing else, this news breaking again will further damage the already shaky reputation of Mayweather, who has seen his public opinion fall greatly with the drug testing debacle around his possible fight with Manny Pacquiao. whatever Floyd was trying to do there, and surely now it can’t have been that he really wanted the testing initially, it has now backfired severely.

Full details about the use of the drug can be found in an old article on Insider Boxing, dredged up from the depths by a Paclander by the name of Maverick65. Now obviously this article is old and was written by someone who doesn’t like Mayweather very much by the sounds of it. However if the information is correct then mayweather is probably still doing the same things as he was back then. Brittle hands don’t ever get tougher

  • SLAYER says:

Noooooooooo way Mayweather takes this fight. No way. I’m sure Williams wold even come down to 147 to make it happen, but Mayweather would never, ever take it.

  • wowzabean says:

And thank you Los Angeles. God forbid we call PBF a megalomaniac hypocrite. Nobody’s posting this story, it’s like this guys been pretty much using painkillers in fights, it’s absurd.

  • Los Angeles CA says:

So which one of you writers who’s not afraid to lose their job and write about the hypocracy of drug use.

XYLOCAINE is illegal (Boxing) in 49 states but not the state of you guest it, NEVADA. A drug that Floyd Mayweather takes and shoots up on fight nights.

Is this why the fight was never going to happen at the new Dallas Cowboys Arena?

Any responsible writer who might want to take this on and talk about what XYLOCAINE is for all the boxing fans to understand and why it’s banned in 49 states?

    GOOD LUCK

  • FP says:

    82″ reach? geez

  • Dylan says:

I’m sure the big-mouth Mayweathers will not buy this. Even GBP. They all want to preserve Mayweather’s record. Only GBP and Mayweather will choose who’ll be their next cherry-pick willing to be victim for a price…

    Percentage?? 0.01%

  • Greg says:

Will never happen. Too tough a fight and Mayweather usually changes the subject when Williams if mentioned. The only lame excuse Floyd has ever come up with, is that Williams has been beaten before – like that means anything. Floyd won’t fight a smaller Pacquiao for $40 million. You think he’ll fight the bigger Paul Williams?

  • johny dewey says:

its going to be great if he will. I’ll be very very surprised for sure and probably lots of boxing fans even his own fans. IMO the chance of PBF wanting this match up is 30%.

  • wowzabean says:

    Scott,

The Punisher would be a good fight. Here’s the issue though, in fighting someone with such a huge reach advantage, there’d only be one way to fight. You have to attack and get in there. Style’s make fights and there’s no way I see Floyd going toe to toe in ANY fight. Sorry to burst your bubble, keep this fight in your dreams along w/Mayweather/Mosley.
