Mayweather Jr. vs. Pacquiao: Enough is Enough!

by Daniel Ciminera: All I have read about in recent months is Pacquiao v Mayweather and to be perfectly honest, I was completely sick of it a long time ago. Forget Mayweather snr. Forget Golden Boy. Forget Arum. Forget Malignaggi. Forget everything but, Floyd and Manny. Why, if these are supposed to be two of the best fighters in history, is there any avoidance going on?! In my opinion, they have both shown themselves up badly and done the sport no favours whatsoever with their recent actions. Or rather, lack thereof!
However, I believe Floyd has behaved disgracefully. If he did not want to fight Pacquiao, he should have just said straight away, not drag it on and on and on adding more and more stipulations. He was more than happy to go on record and say he would beat Pacquiao easily. Well then Floyd, I put it to you, stop complaining and take the fight, no running your mouth, lets see some action or you will be remembered for “ducking the Pacquiao fight” forever.
Yes, I agree it would have been one of the greatest fights of all time, and certainly in the top ten of our generation. The styles of the two men are perfect for one another. Pacquiao the rough diamond, ambling forward throwing punches in bunches from all angles whilst showing immense balance and power. And of course, Mayweather with his silky polished skills and beautiful technique and handspeed. Would Pacquiao have forced his way through that awkward defence of Floyd? Would he have the power to trouble Mayweather? Could his sheer animal aggression and work-rate fluster Mayweather into losing the decision? Could Mayweather keep Pacquiao at bay? Could he hurt the smaller challenger? Would he dismantle Pacquiao using the polished skills we saw him use to tear Hatton’s dreams to shreds?
The questions are endless but, as it stands we wont get to find out because neither seems man enough to compromise in order to make the fight happen. Though I would hazard a guess that the fight will happen at some point in the near future because while they need the fight for completely different reasons, they do indeed, both need it.
Pacquiao needs this fight to end on an appropriate high. Any other fight, such as the touted Pacquiao v Malignaggi match up would be too much of a step backwards and wouldn’t be a credible fight.
On the other hand, Mayweather, believe it or not, needs the fight more than Pacquiao. After staging a comeback in 2009, seemingly in order to get ring sharp again ready for this fight. If he is to continue boxing, his stock will be worth a lot less than it once was, or indeed could be if he could beats Pacquiao.
If he wants to be remembered as the best, he has to prove it now and stop this circus before it makes the sport of boxing look like a has-been joke where the best fighters avoid each other. Or do us all a favour by retiring and allowing everyone to finally get over it!

Paqiao does not want to take his blood test because of his culture. The people from the Philippines are superstitious about taking out blood from them and Mayweather I bet found that out so Paqiao won’t take his blood test and make it seem like he’s doing drugs.
Lets put things straight… manny never rejected any drug test or is he afraid of needles(he has tattoos all over his body), this is a misconception and misleads ignorant boxing fans, for the record manny subjected himself to NASC random drug test right after this drug test issue exploded, second manny agreed to a three random blood testing… 1st before the fights media conference, 2nd 30 days prior to the fight and 3rd right after fight night (these tests cannot escape pacman if ever he is using PED) eventhough these are not required by the NASC, manny’s camp was so humble that it offered these terms to mayweather’ camp even the latter is not a champion, however floyd was so hardheaded he insists on his own terms and even humiliates pacman over unwarranted media hype, pacman is a true sportsman and has never been found positive in using performance enhancing drugs in all his fights, he live a clean life all his boxing career (unlike the mayweathers who had been invovled in doping issues esp mayweather sr.) now whats the fuzz? it only brings us to reason… floyd is afraid of pacman he is chickening out and is using all reasons for a great escape!

To 1984 silver medallist:I was talking about KO power and that JMM fight convinced me that Floyd Jr. doesnt possess real KO power. Just by looking at his last five fights Floyd Jr. has one KO against Hatton and decisioned Judah, Baldomir,OLDH and Marquez. Pacquiao in his last five fights decisioned Marquez and KOed Diaz, OLDH, Hatton, and Cotto.Now, who has more KO power, Floyd Jr. or Pacquiao? Thats why Floyd Jr. is avoiding Pacquiao because he knows his undefeated status is on the line.
@ Rwill55904…No the same thing can’t be said for Floyd. No one is accusing Floyd of anything, let alone accusing him of anything without any proof. While I’m sure that there is an amount of pride on the line for Floyd, given that he’s given up a lot in negotiations, it is not the same type of pride for Manny. Manny is not openly insulting Floyd. I’m not being biased and it has nothing to do with either one being “my boxer”. I’m simply looking at what’s going on. I’m not sure any self-respecting person can justify what the Mayweathers are doing. There is no reason to publicly accuse Pac of juicing. They could have easily said that Team Pacquiao did not agree to terms and that’s why the fight won’t happen. That’s it. Instead they go straight to the media and let the accusations fly. Didn’t Bob Arum call it? During the post fight press-conference for Pac-Cotto. Didn’t Arum ask Floyd to not turn negotiations into a circus, and to not use the media to negotiate a fight? Isn’t that exactly what Team Mayweather is doing? Please, when Floyd left, boxing was a professional sport. Now that he’s back, it’s a friggin circus. He runs his mouth so much that it was bound to get him into trouble, and now it has. I USED to be a huge Floyd fan too. The way he DESTROYED Corrales was truly awe-inspiring, but over the recent years, I’ve been truly disappointed in the man. It’s not like with ROy Jones who didn’t really have anyone to fight. Floyd constantly refused to fight the fights that would propel him to greatness. Then goes to claim that legacy don’t pay the bills. Then I realized that he’s all hype. The way he had people believing that Marquez actually had a chance against him. He’s tried to hustle his way to the top.
Meanwhile, Pac is there taking the best opposition in front of him. True, some of those guys didn’t belong in the ring with Pac, but that’s not Pac’s fault. He has proven time and again, inside the ring and out, the quality of his character, and the depth of his ability. Now this guy Mayweather wants to accuse him, of basically being a witch with absolutely no proof. I cannot, as a grown as man, look at what Mayweather is doing and find any merit or justification. I’m not gonna be hustled, like the rest, and believe that Mayweather just wants a “fair fight”. I understand if he’s trying to be the “heel” but at least go up against the best competition while you are doing it.

1984 Silver Medal tell me of a good boxer fraud jr has ko??? dont say hatton we all know he was only good in hes country, with mediocre fighters. the only good fighter he has faced will be de la hoya and he didnt beat him convincinly that win could of gone for de la hoya as well. it was a split decision not a unanimous. and he also fought luis castillo who isnt that great and beat fraud in first fight.
@ Phoocquiao….It seems you are the only one here who can give a concise opinion. But that is all it is though. The thing is this, pride, alpha male,whatever. The same thing you say about Pacman can apply to Mayweather. He doesn’t have to take what Pacman wants to give him or not do. But what I hate is because Floyd isn’t “your” boxer,is that people cant be open-minded and objective. Both parties are trying to get the best tactical advantage. That`s it. Pacman might be dirty, he might not be. Floyd may be scared, he might not be. But at least be objective. And stop making excuses for them. cuz none of you are stepping in the ring with them.
@Santiperez, I watched the same fight, and yes, Marquez took Mayweathers’ punches very well. In boxing thre is just as much a psychological game going on with mano y mano competition than you know. 2 Things:
1) Did you see Marquez’ face when he fought Manny? He was bloody but he was confident and strong because he was inflicting as much pain on Manny as he was getting.
2) Did you see his face when he was fighting Mayweather? He was completely confused, battered but maybe not bloodied, because he was getting hit repeatedly and couldn’t touch his opponent AT ALL!
Manny will have the same fate. As you say, his punches won’t hurt Manny, (Take before and after pics) and mentally he will destroy Pacquiao by round 10. When you are constantly getting tagged, and you can’t touch your opponent, it affects you psychologically.
I watched JMM-Floyd Jr fight on the HBO website a couple of times(its still on HBO.com) and I can tell that Floyd Jr has no real power in both of his hands. JMM was knocked down in the 2nd round because JMM chest bumped the oncoming left hook of Money. Juan Diaz has more power than Money he really messed up the face of JMM, but with Money his face looks untouched. With that kind of power Floyd has, Pacquiao will walk thru them just like he did with Cotto’s punches.Thats why he doesnt want to fight Pacquiao.
How could someone in his senses wrote this article blaming Mayweather for requesting random blood test?. The problem with Manny’s fans is that they seems too arrogant to a great extent that ignorance sets in easily through their blood brain barrier. If and i say if Floyd really believed that Pac is on something has the right to ask for a blood test to protect his career. Lets face it, if he wasn’t undefeated he wouldn’t be so marketable in the sense of getting people to watch him fight. So whats the big deal about giving a little blood to say, i am clean lets fight. He won’t do that so as human, most are going to wonder is he hiding something. Its human nature. It has nothing to do with fair or unfair. The sayings is that u are GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT.
Enough is enough is right. Why don’t they find each other an opponent and prove to the world who is the better -both in boxing and in SALES. I mean who has a better percentage in drawing the crowd/pay per view/endorsements. or maybe MP will choose PBF’s opponent and vice versa. Or if I may suggest. MP will take on JMM. and PBF will take on Mosley.
For some sidelight: Freddie Roach vs Mayweather Sr., in a boxing match. MP will train Roach and PBF will train his old man. But again, Drug testing might be an issue again.
The accusations did there job because regardless of what his fans believe pac is now clouded by this. I’de be surprised if he is be able to fight any top fighters without submitting to random testing.
He might be able to sneak one more fight in against a b level fighter in march and retire into politics before blood testing becomes the norm.
In saying that, its not the norm right now and mayweather knew that coming in. Why risk 40 mil to make your stand on stingent drug testing now? I understand both sides of the argument you could suspect that pac is roided as easily as you could say floyd is ducking another top fighter and i couldnt argue against either accusation.
i would just like to know what was in the original contract months ago, did someone change their minds since the negotiations started? Thats probably a question we’ll never know.
@ lex….as far as Pac proposing a penalty. That was a negotiating tactic to get Floyd to agree to the testing terms. The request for secrecy was do diligence by the lawyers as a part of the deal should Mayweather agree. That is in no way an admission of guilt. BTW, i’m not sure why Floyd wouldn’t agree to this? I mean, he feels that he’ll win this fight regardless right? And he does feel like Pac is dirty, doesn’t he? So why not take those terms, win the fight, allow Pac to test dirty, and make an extra $10 mil? Why not accept that? Unless he feels he can’t win the fight.
@ Lex…Earlier you said that you couldn’t find a link that tied GBP to the USADA. Well you find me the link where Pacquiao himself says that he is afraid of needles. Didn’t that come from Team Mayweather. Wouldn’t they be just a little bit biased. Find me the link where Pac himself claimed that testing within 30 days would weaken him. Wasn’t the comment made by Roach saying he wouldn’t allow Pac to test within 30 days? Why don’t you stop being selective with your information and educate yourself properly.
Why is Pacquiao wanting to know what penalties he would face for a dirty drug test and if it would be kept secret from the public? And I saw his youtube thing about not wanting blood tests, but his excuses only make sense to not be tested a couple of days before the fight. It doesn’t explain how he had no problem giving blood less then a month before fighting Hatton but is too superstitious to now. He refuses to have any test inside of 30 days because of this superstition which he never mentioned in his interview on youtube about blood testing and it didnt bother him at all just 9 months ago. And why no random testing??? That seems to be the major difficulty is Manny refuses any random testing. It is easy to beat the system when you know when the tests are ahead of time, just ask somebody with some experience in it like Victor Conte. Manny at least needs to come out and explain how he got tattoes with his fear of needles, why he gave blood less then a month before fighting Hatton despite his superstition, why he says he wants to fight by the rules of every fight in boxing history but won’t fight without a $10 million penalty, why he wanted to know what would happen if he failed a drug test, and why he’s so adamant against any random testing. If he doesn’t explain all these contradictions in his excuses and bizarre stance on testing he will have a huge cloud over his head and an * next to his name.

Mayweather IS to blame simply because if he WANTS this fight, he will tell his people he’s in. no matter what. the fact that its promoters etc making the actual media statements is irrelevant, the boss is Floyd himself. he is the only one who can put everything to one side and say “i’m IN”.
boxers are already tested enough to ensure steroid use isnt a massive problem in the sport. and of the many many times Manny has been tested, he’s never come up positive. also, he agreed to the initial demands they made of him, and they added more! Floyd does not want this fight, or it would be going ahead with the deal sealed already.

Pacquaios representatives asked what penalties Pacquiao would face for a dirty drug test and if it could be kept secret from the public! @ Supreme Court…the Fairness argument is so weak? When has Floyd ever cared about making a fair fight? Was making Hatton go up in weight to a division he himself said he had no business being in? Was breaking the contracted weight against Marquez done in the interest of fairness? Was requesting that this fight be at 154 with a huge ring and 10oz gloves against a small man with shorter arms a sportsman like move by Floyd to ensure a fair fight?
Now with this whole test thing, we are suppose to believe that Floyd is this guy that cares about boxing or fairness? That somehow he’s this benevolent guy that’s here to clean up boxing? Please. Fairness requires professionalism which Floyd clearly doesn’t have (outside the ring).

Good article, but I don’t see how Floyd behaved disgracefully in this. We haven’t heard a word from Floyd since the negoiations began other than him releasing a statement on why he thinks random drug test benefit boxing. Had it not been for that sentence, you could have came off as being unbiased. But as always when we write our true feelings get the better of us. As what happened for you.
I like guy’s that fight like we fought in the streets. Scared and nervous but the fight went on no holds barred. These so called fighters from the ring are scared of ruining their reputations. We know that no matter what they say. Cotto fought anybody, George Foreman didn’t give a crap he fought for the hell of it and, many others from back in the day. Gotti, Ward, Tyson, Herns and even Ali fought the best. They left a legacy of guts that, that’s what fighting somebody is all about. It’s about going in ther with the top guy, period.

Catch Weights,Jr and Super Divisions,different rules in different states, contracts, promoters these are the things that are killing the greatest sport in the world.
If we had a national body none of this would matter, you would have to fight at whatever weight per division you were fighting in. There would be a set standard of glove per division, judges would be judged! If you are not a good judge you would be sent down to the minors like any other sport. If an umpire keeps calling balls strikes he would not be working a MLB event. This sport will have to completely collapses and become unprofitable before we get any change.
Floyds demands are ludacris nothing more,he did not ask it of Hatton, DeLaHoya, Judah or any other fighter he has ever fought. Basically what the Mayweathers are admitting is that Manny Pacquiao is so dangerous and so great that he must be on steroids. So now what? Yall are making a big deal out of Floyd “giving into” Pac’s demands. let’s examine those demands shall we?
1)Floyd wanted the fight at 154 with 10 oz gloves. Now why would Pac, who’s already at a disadvantage being the smaller man with shorter arms, agree to this and fight at a higher weight than he ever has? Wouldn’t accepting this on Pac’s part put him at more of a disadvantage than Floyd agreeing to fight at 147? Especially since FLoyd’s fought at 147 and is comfortable at the weight. Floyd demand #1= dumb
2)Bigger ring. Again, why would Pac agree to this? So he can chase Floyd around the ring? Again, wouldn’t Floyd agreeing to this make the fight more even, then it would if Pac agreed to a bigger ring? Floyd request #2= dumb.
3)Wiggle room on weight and the $10mil penalty….a lot of you seem to forget that Floyd DID threaten to pull out of the fight (100% it was a bluff, and a very weak one, purposefully) because he wanted wiggle room on the scales. Again, why would Pac agree to that. Let’s put that demand in perspective shall we? The fight is already set at the welterweight Maximun. What Floyd was asking for was the ability to come in weighing in as a Jr. Middleweight. Why would ANYONE agree to this? Which is precisely why they added the $10mil penalty. To allow him to do it, but at a very high cost. Floyd demand #3= mostly idiotic.
4)Olympic style testing. Although I do agree with Floyd, in theory, that every fighter should enter the ring knowing that he is on level ground. However, his inability to look at actual facts and set agree to a sensible compromise is astonishing. The only thing Team Mayweather has done is back off of using the USADA, but they insist that testing still be random. So in turn, Team Pac has maintained that they will only test three times. I’m sure if one or the other came to the plate and said that the testing will still be random, but with a cut-off date up to the week of the fight, that we’d have the fight we want. Right now, they are in negotiating phase.
Anyhow, the testing request, although disguised as a genuine concern, is dumb too becuase there is no real evidence of Pac being dirty. No mention on the Mitchell report, BALCO client list, or even by Jose Conseco. So the insistence on Mayweather’s part is what makes this demand dumb. The more they insist that Pac is dirty, the less he’s gonna take random testing. Had they been more professional about it, I’m sure Pac would have agreed given he wouldn’t be putting his pride on the line. Besides, there hasn’t been a single case of a doped up boxer that has actually won or done well while doping. Except James Tony, who beat Ruiz, but he did it with skill, not false power.
So it would seem that all of Floyds demands were geared to give him a huge favorable advantage in the fight. While Pac’s demands actually make the fight more fair. Oh the IRONY…

The whole argument at this point is when to cut off the random blood testing. Pac wants it cut at 30 days and may wants it available up to the fight. If this is the case why not just cut it in the middle? 15 days the random blood tests stop, that should give pac plenty of time to feel his strength is back up. This is a negotiation and both need to give a little if they want this fight to happen.

For refusing to do random blood test, I strongly suspect Manny is into drug and for sueing Mayweather, it is obvious that Manny doesnt want to fight Mayweather. a lot of people wonder why Pac wouldn’t just take the test. I believe it’s because of a concept that may be lost on a lot of people. That’s pride. And Pac’s got a lot of it. Not only as a fighter, but as a Filipino. Let’s not forget that the reason why Pac is being asked to test is because of a baseless assumption made by FLoyd Sr. Would you bow down to demands made by someone that has no idea what they are talking about? Would bend over backwards for a trash talking punk? Hell no you wouldn’t. The MAN in you wouldn’t let you. No amount of criticism or money will make Pacquiao sell out his pride and principles. If the Mayweathers actually had credible eveidence, then I’m more than sure that Pac would clear up those up. As it is now, it’s only the bias of a bitter man. Why would Pac go out of his way for that?

It’s the Mayweather’s fault why this mega-fight disappeared on the horizon. They wanted to create a new commission to replace the Nevada Athlethic commssion that took care of boxing for decades. What the heck were they after?

Mayweather and his camp made a huge boo-boo running their mouth. It gave Pac the excuse he needed to back out of the fight. Pac is sweating, scared sh–less. Floyd can take him out easily. Pac has trouble against slick fighters who can quickly move laterally and throw punches while pedaling back. Pac is very effective against slower fighters and those who stand in front of him… and Floyd is neither. Team PBF are just plain stooopid with their stooopid demands. Roids or no roids, Floyd can tear Pac into shreds.
I don’t see how any of the blame can be put on Pacquiao, he will fight Mayweather under the rules and regulations set down by the Nevada State Athletic Commision. He has even agreed to random urine tests and three blood tests. This is nothing more then a ploy from GBP and the Mayweathers to avoid a fighter I beleive they now realize they cannot defeat.
As for Pacquiao being scared of Mayweather? Scared of what? He fought Miguel Cotto and allowed Cotto to bang away at him while he lie on the ropes. Mayweather is no threat to hurt Pacquiao the most that would happen is Mayweather would jab and run for 12 rounds and Manny would lose a decision while making somewhere in the range of 30 million dollars? Where is the fear at for a guy who is contemplating retirement anyways?
I think the Mayweathers and GBP should be ashamed of the way they are hurting a sport that has been so good to them.
if he passed every test administered by the Nevada Boxing commission, why should Pacquiao agree to more unprecedented and possibly more intrusive tests?
Mayweather is a disgrace. Nothing more to be said. But at the 11th hour, he will eventually agree. He will grovel to the Pacquiao camp because he NEEDS the money.
