Mayweather – Pacquiao: Floyd’s Fear Factor

By Rasheed Catapang: Floyd Mayweather Sr. had wanted us to believe that there’s something about – and amiss with – Manny Pacquiao. But I believe History and not “his story” will judge the Pacquiao’s remarkable ascent in the Pound-for-pound throne. In that regard, and with the benefit of hindsight, I hope this piece would shed some light.

While Dela Hoya was Pacquiao’s sacrificial lamb in the Altar of Fame, Hatton was really the deciding factor in his pound-for-pound claim. In the Pacquiao-Hatton fight, there was just no over-the-hill and weight-drained excuses as Ricky Hatton was the undisputed Junior Welterweight Champion who’s still in his prime and is undefeated at 140 lbs. So when Pacquiao’s devastating punch rendered Hatton unconscious in less than two rounds, it was both a statement and an affirmation.

It had another far reaching effect though when it struck fear in the heart of Floyd Mayweather Sr.

But had Floyd Sr. been paying more attention to the facts than to his poems, he would have known that the hitman’s defeat was inescapable destiny. Sun Tzu, I mean Roach, really just had Hatton figured out. (Though Floyd Sr. wouldn’t consider that as well since that would mean acknowledging Roach’s doing a much better job).

Consider this: As early as after two weeks from Pacquiao’s second fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, which the records will show, Roach was already salivating over getting a fight with Ricky Hatton. Roach knew he has the perfect weapon in Pacquiao to overwhelmingly destroy the popular Manchurian champion.

See, that was even before the Pacquiao–Diaz fight which marked the beginning of Pacquiao’s rampage in the higher weights. Check also the Pacquiao-Diaz post fight interview where Hatton’s name has already been thrown as an opponent preferred by Roach. That said, Hatton simply didn’t stand a chance.

Of course, when the Pacquiao–Cotto fight came to fruition, Pacquiao was already a different beast altogether. He simply will have his way and will not be denied. He has by then the calm demeanor of an assassin, so confident in his well-honed skills. If there’s a transition from a great fighter to an All Time Great, Pacquiao transcended that in the Cotto fight.

After that, Floyd Mayweather Sr. then said that he won’t let his son fight Pacquiao if it were up to him. Through all his garble, that’s perfectly understandable as no father would send his son on a road to perdition. Still, the sin of the father shall be visited upon his son.

For Floyd Mayweather Jr, pound-for-pound Glory is a long way back home. And though everyone gets to reach somewhere by taking one step at a time, Mayweather could have made a big leap had he taken the Pacquiao fight. He won’t be accused of cherry picking anymore and he could regain his rightful place as P4P King – a position he claimed was always his.

Not anymore.

In spite of his great skills set and vast boxing arsenal, Floyd Mayweather Jr. chose to engage with words. He injected some “bad blood” in the equation. And now the super fight is dead.

His “whoop his punk ass” statement is another broken promise, easier said than done. Delivered when the fight negotiations failed, it’s not a threat but a cushion to break his fall.

The sin was passed on from father to son. And in the end, it came back to haunt us all. The truth is out there now, Floyd Mayweather Jr. like his father before him is truly afraid of Manny Pacquiao. And he has every right to be.

Mayweather and Pacquiao might just be the “yin and yang”- equal powers on opposite sides of the spectrum. But Roach affects that balance of power and sways it in Pacquiao’s favor. The scariest thing then for Floyd Jr. is not just being in the other corner with the Pacmonster. Rather, it is that Roach had him figured out. That makes his fear very real!

I just hope Mayweather proves me wrong by taking on Pacquiao inside the ring where it matters.

jWill, ur not particularly bright, aren’t u? more like a syncophant who doesn’t know what he’s talkin about. come and kneel in the mayweather shrine, where ignorance is bliss!

  • motownhitman says:

    Duke…AGREED.

I guess nobody is considering the Arum factor. Anyone that has followed the Floyd/Arum saga knows that Arum does not really want to work with Floyd and as far as the Clottey fight it makes sense in so much that Clottey is a Top Rank guy.

  • Duke says:

so asking for random blood testing makes floyd scared? how about asking for 8 ounce gloves for a welterweight contest? somebody is worried about his pop at 147. stop believing this perception that manny is better than floyd cause he’s a nice guy. manny has been picking fighters since he squeeked by marquez. he’s straight up guilty of what you think floyd has been doing since moving up from lightweight. your just too far up manny’s jock to notice.

  • mikeeee09 says:

bok bok bok bok bok chicken floyd bok bok bok

  • unknown says:

Pacquiao is scared of Mayweather. He is even scared of Marquez. He knew that he have problems fighting counter puncher.

  • Lito27 says:

    @ peplz

why didnt floyd bring up blood testing in, um, i dunno, the 15+ years he’s been boxing…because he finally brings it up in one of the biggest challenges in his life

I would understand bringing it up, but now?? with no proof?? explain?

  • Lito27 says:

Floyd – history of ducking the best
Manny- history of stepping up to fight the best

    who’s ducking who again??

  • jonnie says:

    You’re right!
Floyd could not accept a situation where he loses to Manny.Imagine the morning after with smashed hands and weakened and a loss. What happens now to the brand, to the perks, to the bossing around of people, to the skill, it would indeed be very lonely future for him and his camp and doubly hurting to dela hoya.

Why don’t you lace the gloves and fight the pacman, maybe you can win? Just bring a lot of vaseline coz your gonna need it and ice maaaan.

  • Anonymous says:

The dumb leading the dumb comments lately. Any proof? It’s all hypothetical, eh mates.

  • peplz says:

Its all good though. The true boxing fans are starting to become a part of the online discussion and the Duckiao fans will eventually get drowned out.

  • Hook&Jab says:

Pacman never wanted the fight with Floyd and its obvious but the Pac fans just don’t want to except it! The only reason he came out and said i want o fight floyd is because floyd put the pressure on him too. Arum was trying to get another fight done before negotiations started good. They thougt floyd was going to back down with all the demands they want and was supprised when he didn’t . The blood test was the perfect way to get out the fight. A blood test! It laughable when u think about it. It makes him so weak amd dehydrated. Pacman please.

  • peplz says:

I hate to say it but the proof is in the pudding. Manny Pacquiao will have to be considered a coward until he takes the tests and fights Mayweather. And he seems to be pretty dumb and pompous with this lawsuit charade.

  • peplz says:

    @Eagleeyed

I’d love to see some proof of Mayweather ducking Mosely. If you go to youtube you can easily find a clip where Mosely makes excuses for not wanting to fight Mayweather. But I know most Pacquiao fans don’t require any factual information to form there opinions.

  • p4p queen says:

floyd is using xylocaine to numb his fists.this is PED. pacquiao agreed to have his blood taken right after the fight but this was turn down by floyd cause he will be caught. xylocaine is a banned substance in mostly all us states except nevada.i wonder why he wont fight in texas… now who is the real doper? gotcha!!!!

  • Floyd's clone says:

no way is floyd gonna get my money if he fights the soft malignaggi.

  • mizike says:

I agree with a previous poster. I dont even understand why mayweather is considered #2 p4p right now. Let’s not waste our time and money with the FM

  • od says:

i always tought pbf might dodge the fight but when roach bob and pacman refused mayweather when he try 2 save the fight on the last day by going for the 24 days he was told no they are going for josh and that is that, tells me that pacman dodged the fight for what ever reason, not pbf

  • Anonymous says:

With regards to random blood testing , this is some form of harassment against Pacquiao , the last lost he had was against Morales and they did draw blood 2 days before the fight becouse they say they lost Manny’s blood. After that Manny who is superstitious , like mostly asians do, felt that he became weak and powerless, he was battling two fights come fight night one against Morales and the other against himself . Becouse of the psychological effect of 2 days blood draw, he felt he was weaken and that his punches was powerless. On random if there’s no cutoff date they can draw Mayweather let’s say 2 weeks before the fight and they can draw Pacquiao 2-1 days before the fight and they will justify it by saying that’s why it’s “Random”. That’s why they are insisting random, so they can harrass Manny psychologically. Again an edge before the fight, which is unprecedented random blood testing was never before done. And all becouse somebody surmised that he’s using steroids, in medical term Mayweather Sr has delusion(is a fixed belief that is either false, fanciful, or derived from deception). And what’s amazing is people are buying his belief. It’s a case of blonde leading the blonde or bluntly saying Dumb leading the Dumb. For an accusation without a proof is just sad to say, will remain accusation. In a court of law this is just a hearsay, and it will not stand in a court of law. Did you get it Schaefer Ivy league grad.

  • Floyd's clone says:

I heard floyd’s gonna fight the light hittin malignaggi soon. that would be quite an event, don;t u think?

  • Floyd's clone says:

Pretty boy floyd fears no one. no one that he can beat.
that’s why money and manny won’t ever meet

  • Lou says:

Storm watcher,r I seen him lose two fights one to Castillo and the other that should have been a DQ when Crack Man Uncle Roger stepped into the ring to Choke Judah. Since Steele and Mayweather are Vegas Buddies Steele didn’t do his job. The rules state if a Boxer Corner steps into the ring he’s disqualified. I have seen two Ko’s reversed to DQ because the other corner stepped into the ring. Arreola ko’d someone but the other corner step into the ring to save their boxer. The ref DQ’d them. I also seen this in a Tyson bout. I also want to point you can’t be ranked as P4P best when you won’t fight elite fighters in your own divison. He needs to be removed from that list that Oscar makes up with his Ring Magazine.

  • eagleeyed says:

    To Pelpz & MW fans,

I agree that MW is a great fighter and has defensive skills par excellence. But did you ever realize how he avoided the best fighters in 147 lbs division, Mosley, Cotto, Williams, Margarito and opted to retire. How did he not ask the 40 opponents he had in the past to do the drug test? Is Pacquiao ever been tested positive by all the boxing commissions in he world where he fought? Do you know that to make the fight Pacquiao bent down to do 3 blood tests (one IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE FIGHT) EVEN IF THIS IS NOT REQUIRED BY THE NEVADA BOXING COMMISSION? Who have the bad reputation on the illegal drugs? Is it Pacquiao or the Mayweathers? THIS IS JUST A CONVOLUTED WAY OUT OF A CONFUSED AND SCARED FIGHTER. I REST MY CASE.

  • lorendgreat says:

They hate to believe this: that in a 3rd world country like the phils., will rise a filipino fighter that will conquer them all. Floyd if you want Olympic way of drug testing go to the next olympic in Brazil then join them but if you want to fight in Nevada then obey the prescribed rule in Nevada. Simple isn’t it.

  • Anonymous says:

What can you say , talk is cheap and Floyd can say what ever he want just to cover he’s fears. Mayweather Sr. can’t believe that Hatton was smoke in 2 rounds while he’s son took 10 rounds that in he’s slowing mind can’t be real so he surmised that Manny is on something. That all started everything, without a proof anyone can accused anyone of anything, and some people will believe you. Even on the lower weight class, Manny were knocking out opponents with his left hands, now he has two. And some people just can’t believe the fact that ” a small” guy like him can climb in weight and knock out people in welter weight. But all these things were not unprecedented, it was done before by Henry Armstrong the only difference is Armstrong is “American” that’s why nobody doubt him , and Manny is Asian.

  • BNB says:

Why don’t this writer puts himself in any boxer’s place, where you could die in the ring and then say there is fear in Floyd. I would think is human nature to have a little fear, but should Floyd make sure that both fighters are clean, before getting in there if he is concern about the Pacman being on steroids. After all, Floyd did say I won’t take random tests, we will both do it, to prove to all this is a clean fight.

  • Hook&Jab says:

@Pepiz l would absolutely have to agree! They never wanted this fight. There was so many excuses of why this fight would fail before the negotiations started. I think Arum was trying to get a dea with Yuri before the first week of negotiations was done. They was suprised when floyd agreed to everything that they wanted and this drug test was just a excuse to move on. Alot of questions have been raised so i guess thats why Arum made sure to get another fight with a guy he also promotes. Avoid being asked for a blood test.

  • Nam Cap says:

If PBF wants a fair fight why does he use XYLOCAINE?

People says , oh its a pain killer its not PED …. this prescription drug as written in the examiner.com article and discussed on the mayweather vs corraless fight is the injected form not some over the counter gel.

This is a drug to numb a part a your body to momentarily overcome pain.

Yes, You use it when you fight allows your performance to improve. That is not PED?

Compare to Pacman who does not take any form of painkiller? Before you accuse anyone look at your self first.

You want a fight? fight mano a mano and be a man if you have the skills and training no amount of drug will help your opponent.

  • WTF says:

MUST WATCH WHAT KFC KNOWS ABOUT MP…SEE U TUBE( OLYMPIC STYLE BLOOD TEST.

  • peplz says:

Manny Pacquiao is the one who walked away from this fight. All big fights have contractual demands from both sides. And asking for a higher standard of drug testing is not an unreasonable demand. What would be unreasonable would be to ask for a lower standard of drug testing. All of this “who is Mayweather to change the rules” nonsense is as bogus and childish as it sounds. I might understand it if he were trying to make the tests less effective. But he is trying to have the most effective drug tests. Why would you say no to that? To prove that you don’t have to negotiate with Floyd Mayweather, I guess. Or maybe because your mother doesn’t think you can win you don’t either. Don’t forget that Pacquiao’s mother pleaded with him to retire instead of fighting Mayweather. He and Roach are concerned with giving Mayweather some sort of a mental edge. This is real pathetic stuff. The silliest one is “Mayweather needs Pacquiao more than Pacquiao needs Mayweather”. Or as Roach said “we’re bigger than Mayweather” so we don’t need to fight him. Who is ducking who? Ever since the Pacquiao team first mentioned Mayweather they’ve been talking about how the negotiations would fail and were blaming Mayweather before the negotiations even started. “He’ll price himself out of the fight”. “He’ll negotiate himself out of the fight”. “His time has passed”. “I’m sure he doesn’t want to fight”. “I would rather not do business with him.” “He needs us more than we need him”. They only had pessimistic things to say about making the fight happen. Its almost as if they were planning to have a failed negotiation. Which leads me to believe that they never really wanted the fight in the first place. And for it to failed over something so bizarre.

  • boxinfan says:

Watch an interview with Manny Pacquiao in 2005 !……The Blood he submitted to the Nevada Athletic Commission simply got lost in the records !!!…he had to do the same procedure again after it got lost !!

  • boxinfan says:

HERE IS SOMETHING EVERYONE HAS TO SEE!! IT’S AN INTERVIEW WITH MANNY PACQUIAO IN 2005 !!!…YOUTUBE…THE RECORD OF THE BLOOD TEST HE SUBMITTED TO THE NEVADA ATHLETIC COMMISSION GOT LOST !, AND HE HAD TO PERFORM THE SAME PROCEDURE AGAIN, SIMPLY BECAUSE IT GOT LOST IN THE RECORD OF THE NEVADA ATHLETIC COMMISSION….2005 !!…Titled: Pacquiao talks about Blood test two days before the fight SUBTITLE

  • Ricky says:

easy, floyd passed it up because he never intended to fight Manny; he needed a way out and found it. Are you going to play into floyd’s hands when he then says ” now make it 10 days before the fight” don’t you get it? HE IS AFRAID TO FIGHT THE PACMAN! becuse he will lose!
Manny stood on principle, Floyd stands on flimsy ground and lies…

  • StormWatcher says:

Truth is, both of them are silly for not excluding themselves out of the equation. THey forgot the fans. How can anyone pass on $40 million? I mean; on one hand’ he didn’t ask Pac to shoot his mother. He said take the test 14 days b4 the fight and its a go. And on the other hand a difference between 24 days & 14 days is not that serious. Its a discrace to both fighters and camps. But personally speaking, until I see Floyd Jr. lose a fight, he’s still Pound for Pound King in my eyes. I don’t think Pacman would even get Floyd in trouble more less knock him out. Floyd is just too skilled for Pacman. And another thing… Roger Mayweatherto me is a better trainer than Freddy Roach. Just my thoughts. And for the Record… Floyd Jr shut Marquez out 12 rounds – Zero. Pacman had a hard time with him and lost 1 in my eyes. Floyd will either outbox Pacman or wear him down like he did Zab, Aturo Gatti and Delahoya. Pacman cant beat Floyd. No way he wins. This beef seems more about Arums Camp and GDP Camp having superiority complex.

  • gangsta floyd says:

yes, floyd fear freddie roach. it was obvious when he did not want a rematch with oscar. oscar just needed to follow the gameplan and needed to buy a second set of lungs.

  • Dk says:

hahahaha nice comment straight guy,im a tool wow did u think that all by yourself, way to duck the question, hahaha, loser

Mayweather should just retire and be a commentator for ESPN… At least he’ll get paid to run his mouth.. cuz he is really good at it..

  • Southpaw1 says:

This is a take that I never even considered. Maybe Roach did find flaws in the Floyd Mayweather Jr armor.

Recalling the Oscar fight, Freddie did give him the keys to success, but Oscar never followed Roach’s instructions with any form of consistency. When he did listen to Roach, he won the rounds without a problem.

After the fight Oscar was asked, “Why didn’t you listen to Freddie?” and he replied”It was just one of those nights, I don’t know.”

Until Floyd signs a deal to face a credible opponent I’m not even interested in him.

Fact: Floyd has only fought two, undersized guys,(Hatton & Marquez) in the last two years. I really don’t know why were even talking about him any longer.

  • Daniel Ciminera says:

good stuff rasheed. that was the most brilliantly written article i have ever read.

and you have hit the nail directly on its shiny little head. mayweather is scared because he took so long to get rid of an off form hatton and then pacquiao came and walked over him as though he was nothing.

40 million dollars or not, a man like that is a truly terrifying prospect.
