Matthew Hatton vs. Floyd Mayweather: How much of a mismatch is this?

By Sean McDaniel: Welterweight Matthew Hatton (37-4-2, 14 KO’s) has had his name mentioned as a potential opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr. if his negotiations with Manny Pacquiao pan out for their March 13th bout in Las Vegas, Nevada. Many boxing fans are alarmed at Hatton, 28, being considered by Mayweather for a bout, as they see Hatton as totally unqualified for a fight with someone as talented as Mayweather. But who knows? Maybe Hatton could show some things an open some eyes by fighting over his head.
The younger Matthew Hatton could have some of the talent that his older brother has, and just needs an opponent like Mayweather to bring it out of him. Matthew Hatton has been fighting incredibly well as of late, winning four out of his last five fights. I think an argument can be made that Hatton won his last bout, a 12 round draw with IBO welterweight champion Lovemore N’dou. Hatton looked great in that fight, showing superb skills and giving N’dou a boxing lesson through most of the fight.
I think people are being unfair about Matthew. The man is quite talented, and will do a lot better against Mayweather than many people think. I can see Hatton doing a better job than his brother Ricky or Juan Manuel Marquez, who was recently shut out by Mayweather in a one-sided fight in September.

Cheers dave I try and respect everyones opinion on things and like to debate ive learned alot from other people on this site .But im not buying matthew will beat floyd no way i like matthew hes a nice lad but he isnt in the same class as floyd.

I have no idea what some people on this page are talking about and I train at a boxing club in Essex everyday. Well bar today, its snowing! Gammon, combine harvester. Why is everyone slating Delboy for suggesting the obvious, that size does not win you fights. Jeez, we have some 10 stoners in our club who would knock the stuffing out of me, because of their technical ability and speed.
It seems a little strange that everyone with an islamic name within their nickname on here agrees with one another. Is this the same person or can they only agree with one another if the race is a match. Matthew Hatton would not beat Mayweather FACT.
Nor is Mayweather a poor fighter. He has fought the same guys Pacman has give or take a few differences and as his record shows, did not lose. Its a shame the fight seems like it wont happen. But for those who are slamming Mayweather being a coward and a ducker for demanding random drug tests….. get off your pedestal and ask yourself why that is an obstacle. Surely Pacman should just agree to it if he wants the fight. Its nothing to do with being forced about. Its a fair demand given that this IS a P4P fight and involves two fighters who have done the amazing and defied normal boxing logistics.

I will not be blinded by science and fancy writing i respect your opinion . but i cannot see mathew beating mayweather its a total mismatch we will have to wait and see.
Having hair would only grange gammon a punch by 0.47% if i have the calculations correct, so it would be unfair to suggest it paid a huge part in the cotto fight. Having shaved head can allow oxygen pours to rise by 20% thus making the head unable to withstand a typical hit.
This is true, A larger head will take more water tight knackers than a smaller garden. Mayweather walks on what we call ‘Iron feathers’ in the boxing game. And i believe Matthew will use the skyhooks to off guard MAyweather.

Del boy, you obviously know nothing about boxing, What a cained comment to make. Boxing is an art form where individual boxing talents make fights. Boxing to you must be two drunken men in a pub or club throwing badley targeted gammon like shots. YOu cant state vice like movements in boxing as your self does. YOu wouldnt be much good as a boxer either cos your disapline is naught, like your boxing knowledge.

M Hatton fought a guy in my boxing gym called craig watson and lost every round on the hatton lazcona undercard so u can imagine what mayweather will do to him. Mayweather needs be a warrior and fight the best fighters around not look for an easy payday.

Matthew brings a lot more outlets in gammon than people think. His wagon like style would confuse Mayweather and frail in conjunction with Matthew’s water face. Matthew has a fighter style that gives Mayweather more on coming force than what brother Ricky did. One must vice such grained outlets in boxing to clarify Mayweathers excellent use of Cained defence.

Gloves and ring size are alwyays negotatiable. And Manny is going to fight Yuri at 154! Manny needs every advantage including PEDs to fight Floyd. The ring and gloves Floyd wanted are legitimate too! Manny’s Demands:
*147lbs. – they’re both fighting at welterweight in their previous fights which is reasonable since FMJ agreed to fight Marquez @ 144lbs so whats the difference?
*$10m per pound penalty – Floyd cheated 2 pounds in the marquez fight, still reasonable to avoid cheating in weight.
*8oz. boxing gloves – it is legitimate in WW.
*ring size – Manny is asking for the standard ring size. no more, no less.
Floyd’s Demands:
* 154lbs – because he knows Manny never fought above 145lbs.
* Random Blood Testing – Because daddy said Manny is on Steroids and i believe him coz his a drug dealer before.
Why not ask for 147, a $10 million penalty, 8 oz. gloves, a smaller ring, and a foreign marketing agent? If Manny isn’t scared why does he DEMAND all of these, but only if the opponent is Floyd Mayweather Jr.? Ask yourself that, and you will realize who is scared.

Again all of the PPVs in Floyd’s retirement combined were less then Floyds last two fights. This include Pacquiao-de la hoya and pacquiao-hatton. Mayweather got more PPV buys against both of them. Lets see if Manny demands Yuri fight him at 147, with a $10 million penalty, 8 oz. gloves, a special foreign marketing agent, and the ring size he wants. Manny made up all these crazy demands to get out of the fight. Congrats Manny, you have proved your cowardice and tainted your wins. Manny is scared to death of getting in the ring with Floyd and made up all these rules; lets see how many of these he will demand to fight Yuri. LOL And Mayweather is not going to fight Hatton. This aint a real story but to be fair, taking the dodging accusations etc to one side, its about time that warm up fights/inbetween bouts featured some Brits. Lockett and Jennings are the only two that come to mind. Granted they both got knuckled, its no different to Pavlik fighting an Espino, or Haye a Monte Barrett. Its an awful topic of conversation and has only come about because there is bugger all news at the moment in Boxing bar the p4p on/off clash – but that aside, why not give the British journeymen some shots at the big time. Bernie Dunne got it when he did Cordoba.
I do agree with everyone though when I say it does annoy me that at this time, with all the focus needing to be on the Pacman/PBF fight, rumour mongers are putting these two names together. Its a tune up fight and having schooled Marquez he does not need one at this juncture.

I checked to see where Hatton is rated. He’s #32 as a welterweight. Then I checked around and found Hopkins rated #1 lightheavy when he hasn’t fought a light heavyweight in three and a half years. Hatton in 7.
