Margarito deserves a shot against Pacquiao

By Esteban Garduno: After serving his year suspension from the California Athletic Commission, it’s high time that former IBF welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (37-6, 27 KO’s) be allowed to fight against. Presently, Margarito has applied to have his license renewed by the Texas Athletic Commission rather than the California Commission. It makes sense, because Margarito is planning to fight on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey fight on March 13th at the Dallas Cowboy stadium.
Margarito lost his license anyway for a year by the California Commission. But the year is over, it’s time that Margarito be allowed to fight again. And if Margarito beats his March 13th opponent, Carson Jones, I’m hoping that Margarito can be set up with a fight against World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Pacquiao.
I think this would be a great fight. And for those boxing fans who think that Margarito should be banned for life for the hand wrap incident, all I can say is what about all the fighters that are caught using steroids and growth hormones? Why aren’t they banned for life? If you don’t think that a chemical that helps you put on muscle and hit harder than you normally don’t help you, then I think people are being naive.
Performance enhancing drugs allow a fighter to hit someone harder than their body would naturally allow them to. Granted, the steroids and growth hormones probably don’t help for fights that go into the later rounds were conditioning becomes a factor, but I suspect that they do help in the first half of the fights.
And I also think it helps some unethical fighters put on bulk to move up in weight so they can make more money. I don’t think it’s easy to put on 15 to 20 pounds of pure muscle in three to six months. I don’t know that you really can. For fighters to move up in weight like that, a lot of the weight that they put isn’t muscle when they’re moving up in weight so quickly.
So my thoughts are if fighters found dirty with steroids or growth hormones in their bodies aren’t being banned for life, then why should Margarito be? To me, they both seem to come out to being the same thing. How can a fighter who uses steroids and/or growth hormone be allowed to continue boxing while a fighter who pads his gloves can’t? Both of them would seem to me to be dangerous.
This is why I think Margarito deserves a second chance against Jones initially and then Pacquiao later on in 2010. He’s done his time and given that there’s no laws saying that he should be banned for life from boxing, then I think he should be able to fight again. Boxers need to be able to have a second chance if they screw up. But if fans and the commissions do want to make it impossible for fighters like Margarito to fight again, then I think they need to apply the same standards for fighters using growth hormones and steroids.

He should fight. So he got caught cheating, but he served his time. Mosley got caught and he didn’t have anyting happen to him. PAC declined to random blood tests for the MAYWEATHER fight, so what is he hiding?

Thus, anybody know how long Margarito been suspended for cheating? I have no clue when he’s been suspended, but my guess is not long enough. If so, he should start from the bottom since there are so many fighter move up on the list since his absence. And for sure poeple will disagree if by any chance he fight a contender to fight for the title.

Plaster hands is not just unsporting, it is DANGEROUS. Much more so than fighting a juiced fighter.
The Athletic Commission’s duty is to penalized boxers using illegal substance(s). Fernando Vargas popped positive for steroids after the NSAC mandated urine test after his fight with Oscar. Vargas owned up to it like a man he is & got fined $100K & 9 months suspension. Two fighters pleaded “ignorance” by claiming they didn’t know the stuff was illegal. One is Margarito but he was fined & suspended for 1 year and the other is Mosley which the Commis have yet to rule on the fine & suspension…… Margarito served his time while Mosley got away like a bandit. Margarito deserves a second chance like Mosley.
ok … lets get this straight… IT IS POSSIBLE FOR A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE TO GAIN 20 POUNDS OF MUSCLE WITHIN 3-6 MONTHS. KOBE BRYANT DID IT DURING ONE OF HIS OFF SEASONS.
The commissions job is to make sure boxers are not cheating. So put the blame on the commission for letting these cheaters slide. I believe random blood testing during training should be given to every boxer. Also wraps should be inspected very carefully before fighters wrap up. This way fighters are fighting with no way of cheating.

You know, the law is allowing him to fight. That’s fine. However, I do not see him as deserving a chance to fight Pacquiao. At best, he deserves a re-match against Mosley. But the guy has to start from the bottom. Carson Jones, good luck. He isn’t easy to beat and your going to have your hands full.
The way I see it, Margarito forfeited his opportunity to fight the top fighters when he was CAUGHT cheating. He has to fight his way back to the top.
The same should apply to Pacquiao if is CAUGHT cheating. The same should apply to any boxer caught cheating! I agreed many times on this forum that such an act should be punished by a lifetime ban from fighting in the U.S. But since the ruling bodies are gonna give him a license, then I don’t believe he deserves a “payday” fight.

seeems to me that magaritio doesnt deserve to fight someone like jones, who is a “tamatoe can” (hate that term these fighters try hard to win and are required in the sport, much respect to them!) i think he should have to fight someone in the top 10 and that he should be fined 25% of his purse everytime he fights again

completely wrong, he should be done with boxing for life. anyone who watches assault in the ring knows what loaded wraps can do to someone. steroids have not been proven to have a true boost to a boxer’s performance, we all saw what luis resto did with loaded gloves.
well one reason is because its not the same thing steroids and stuff do make you stronger and stuff like that but its still your work. using objects and stuff like that actually KILL people its a matter of life and death dude… like back when boxers used to put mercury in there gloves and it would make them really heavy and stuff like that people would DIE. its far more supernatural when you have rock like substances in your hands than workout enhancements cuz steroids only work depending on how hard you work out im not condoning it but marga-cheato doesnt deserve another chance… it was attemptef murder as far as im concerned

Wraps are worse. They allow a fighter to hit as hard as he likes without feeling anything. PEDs may increase power but power’s nothing without timing and speed and PEDs can’t give a fighter that. That’s natural. Still dangerous though and any fighter caught using either should be banned for at least a year. They should put Margarito in against Moseley again – everyone would pay to see him get his cheating ass kicked again after what he did to Cotto. Cotto is shot now after that fight and his face looked like it’d been hit with a bat for 11 rounds.
Agree regarding the double standards issue but then clearly fighter get away with both suspect wraps and PEDs otherwise they wouldn’t be catching the odd one. The boards need to tighten up their act – its hard to believe Margarito hadn’t done it before and if so why wasn’t he caught earlier. Random tests and an official inspecting every part of the wraps is the only way and they should have been doing it long ago. As far as deserving a shot at Pacquiao goes no way – it took Margarito a year and two fights after getting beat by Williams just to earn another shot at Cotto. Why should he get another shot at a world title after winning his first fight back after being banned for a year. Needs to prove he can beat at least on top tier opponent WITHOUT wraps before he deserves another shot.

Agree that there’s a double standard between wraps and steroids. Disagree that Margo should get a shot at Pac. You kidding me? If and only if he gets to fight again, Margo should fight his way up the latter. He commits a semi crime, possibly beats a can and all of a sudden he gets a mega fight? Makes no sense. Arum is a scumbag. I’m all for giving someone a second chance depending on the wrongdoing but Arum is treating Margo like his honor student.

A year isn’t long enough, but if he’s reinstated and wins against Jones, Margarito shouldn’t go straight to Pacquiao. He should earn the right to fight Pacquiao by beating at least 2 top 10 fighters. On the other hand, going straight to Pacquiao might be the best justice because of what Pacquiao will do to Margacheato.

Setting aside the question of whether or not Margarito should be licensed again, I fail to see how he deserves a shot at Pac. Carson is a C class fighter and this is not an elimination bout. Margarito has a record of losing against elite fighters, i.e. Mosley, Williams, and if he wants a title shot he should have to earn it. Let him have a rematch with Cotto, Mosley or, Williams before granting him the right to the biggest payday of his career.
Como on guys, be smarter about what you guys post here. There is no reason to insult anyone…everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I believe Margarito should get a second chance, just the way many athletes have been given many second chances before…The sport of boxing need super stars, and even though Margarito may not be a super star, he is a good quility fighter that can help the sport (Granted, as long as he doesn’t cheat).

It’s time for him to be reinstated and fight. A Margarito/Pacquiao fight would be very intriguing. Can Pacquiao beat a much bigger and stronger opponent.
