Jones-Hopkins: Golden oldies can serve up a treat

By Chris McHugh: I know most of you have no interest in the better-late-than-never clash between Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins, but I’m hoping a few of you might just change your minds once you have read my article.

Don’t get me wrong, I can see why a vast amount of people are refusing to watch the fight because it’s on pay per view, but I can’t help thinking it will be worth every penny.

We all know that prior to Jones’ first-round knockout to Danny Green he was openly calling out Hopkins, even offering to let the winner receive the greater cut of the purse. Finally, after much trash talking from both boxers the fight has been made and you can sense the respect they have for each other but also the pure hatred. Hopkins has never really been able to forget his 1993 defeat to Jones, and I believe he sees this fight as much more than a pay day – he sees revenge.

Both fighters will go into this fight knowing they can’t lose, not because of what effect it will have upon future earnings, but because they can’t stand the thought of the other fighter standing victorious. I just feel they will come into this battle as psyched up as ever before, and will do whatever it takes to shut their rival up for good. Yes, they may be past there prime, but I’m sure they will treat this bout as a fight to the death (a bit extreme I know), leading to an all-action slugfest.

You may say there’s no chance of Hopkins coming out and trading with Jones, and you may be right, but I’ve been waiting a long time for this fight and now it’s finally here I’m going to believe these future hall of famers can serve up one more classic.

Yeah why not let them fight the two old boys they obviously have a grudge with each other let the two greats have one more smash.
You had your chance Danny you should have went to America theres no money here in Australia plus I think your chance is gone only one way to make money in boxing go to the USA.
Plus Benard he’s an old fox and there’s no way he would be scared of Danny he will be laughing at that have a good look at the fighters bernard fought in his time and tital belts he’s one who’s Danny fought and do your maths come on show the man abit of respect thats the ( Executioner ) Bernard Hopkins I think he will easily beat Jones.

  • Aus Box says:

Danny Green!!! Why do we give him respect.
I have one question for anyone who talks up Danny Green.

Who has he beaten besides and busted out RJJ????? No one! and when he did have a chance to be great he head butted his way through the fight and got DQ’d….Nice one Danny.

I love Aussie boxing, but can we all stop trying to talk up Danny Green. Geale, Katsidies, Vic, Mundine, all better than Green regardless of weight.

As for the oldies getting it on!!Bhop by decision.

  • boxb says:

jones will win easy. that will just show americans how good danny green is. and why hopkins did not fight green becuase he had no chance against green. you americans have been cheated of watching good boxers because they dont fight in america untill there end of there careers. just like joe calzace showed you americans he did not fight in america untill the end of his career. THE BEST FIGHT TO WATCH WOULD BE DANNY GREEN VS THOMAS ADAMAK

  • San Diego says:

I agree with Alonzo, Roy Jones Jr. will have hard time against Hopkins. At this stage of their careers, the only thing that would save you from a knockout is the fundamentals of boxing. Hopkins has it, Jones doesn’t. I give Hopkins the favor in this fight. With that said, it is actually a lot too late for this fight. This should have happened years ago! If Pacquiao vs. Mayweather happens when they are in their forties, who would care then? We want the young, fast and the furious. Not the old, half a step behind, and careful.

  • Alonzo says:

I would watch it but i think the current version of Roy wouldn’t stand a chance. He is shot physically and mentally. He fights completely different from what made him a future hall of famer. His speed advantage is gone, he no longer attacks with confidence and he has been exposed to having a weak chin. The old Roy was outstanding cuzz he was fast, aggressive, confident and hard to hit because he knew he had the abiklity to avoid shots. Now the current version of Roy who goes to the ropes and tries to fight in spots would get destroyed by a technically sound Hopkins. Hopkins wants this fight cuzz he knows Roys not “technically sound and the gifts he once had are diminished. I’m a die hard Roy fan but I wouldn’t want to watch this. If they did fight it should have been before Roy went up to heavyweight.

  • Hudson says:

Why do people completely disrespect Danny Green. He would have pulverised Hopkins. Hopkins is too scared to face him. Gutless, wealk. Green is 36 not that young really and smashed 40 year old RJJ. Do the math fools.

  • Tom C says:

Jones got caught by a big punch, its happened before it’ll happen again. If ya wanna know if Jones is finished ask Jeff Lacy.

  • Golden Boy says:

Roy Jones is past his prime. this man is only a shadow of his past

  • Mike says:

People here talk about boxers balls? LOL They are professional fighters who have already proven their courage by climbing those 3 steps! Cowards, chickens, blah, blah, blah.
To the guys who talk like this, how many rounds have you gone lately?!

  • Ukansodoff says:

Im sure wed all be more happy talking about a Mayweather v Pacman fight but thanks to the spineless American super fights aint being made.

  • bazooka says:

I am with you Seantonio make me a happy man to see Hopkins get spanked he is a good cure for insomnia. But it aint gonna happen it will be hopkins doing 60 seconds of boxing every round Roy is to old for this game.

  • VINCE VEGAS says:

Do the math? The only guys doing any math will Be B-Hop & Roy; adding another 7 figures to their allready fat bank accounts. I just hope Roy gets out of the game while he can still count to 10.

Roy looks the goods, but he just can’t seem to put it together anymore. B-Hop on the other hand (like him or hate him) Is a master of boxing fundementals.

I don’t know, this thing has ‘exhibition’ written all over it if you ask me.

  • KALEL says:

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

This should be called SLEEPY HALLOW or THE GREAT BOOFEST….. It could also be titled: TOO LATE…

Nobody wants to see this junk… This fight is 8 yrs too late. This is what I’m talking about. When both these guys were young, exciting and the fans wanted to see them fight they ducked each other. Now that they are both old, faded and rusted they want to fight now. It’s too late..

My prediction is that Jones win by a very very boring decision. The prefight promotion will be more exciting than the actual fight. I hope they don’t put this mess on PPV!!!!

  • E says:

B-hop’s got this, The reason Green and hop didn’t fight is cause they couldn’t agree to terms, why should B-hop split 50/50 when the money generated by this fight is mostly his boxing fanbase. Green’s a nobody.

And what are you all talking about his age for ? Am I the only one who has watched his most previous fights? He’s still in his prime, eat your words .

  • mario says:

They might have amir khan vs madiana or paulie n rocky juarez so for maybe 30 bucks between friends n a few beers it might be worth a nite

  • Darren says:

i dont think it will be a good fight but i cant wait for it either

  • Vlad says:

This is a joke right??? Hopkins has no balls to fight Danny Green after agreeing to the fight. Is anyone really interested in this fight??

  • mario says:

Pac vs clottey is not a worth ppv yet gbp thinks hopkins vs jones is?

  • tiger1223usa says:

this fight better not be pay per view this fight should be free !!!

  • iceman says:

he just didnt dominate, thats all

  • iceman says:

    roadkill,

roy beat tarver then got koed by tarver then got koed by johnson.

that roy didnt dominate tarver in their first fight many anti jones etc.. say he lost. well no he didnt, he won.

  • milosands says:

To those who are backing Jones here… take a moment to think this through.

Hopkins is like a fine wine and has almost got better with age. He completely schooled the undefeated and hard hitting Pavlik and he made it a difficult nights work for the brilliant Calzaghe. Jones got completely destroyed by Calzaghe and has been recently knocked out clean in the first round. Now, why don’t you guys do the math.

Saying that though I do hope I am wrong and this fight turns out to be good but i doubt it. I certainly won’t be paying for it and no-one else should.

  • Pale the Pug says:

i love Roy so much that when he KO’d by Traver it felt like i just watched my brother get shot and killed. PLEASE ROY HANG THEM UP!! WE CARE TOO MUCH TO WATCH YOU DO THIS TO YOURSELF!

  • ste says:

yeah it will be worth every penny to watch roy jones take even more of battering & end up like muhammed ali. hopkins is a disgrace for taking the fight. he should do what every one else should do n tell jones to hang his gloves up before he get realy hurt.

  • stefano says:

    hopkins will spark roy

  • BNB says:

I don’t want to see this. Jones a chin that is softer the Mr. Softie’s Vanillla icec ream and Hopkins is so old that he could hardly raise his arms to throw a punch….lol..They should both retire…

  • Ukansodoff says:

oh ive got interest in this fight, they may be aging and way past their best but they are both legends.

Id love Jones Jr to win ive been a huge admirer for many years, but has he got anytihng left, Hopkins on the other hand is about 97 years old now but hes aint shot thats for sure.

  • Rude Bwoi says:

    Roy Jones Beat Bernard Hopkins

    Do the Math

  • iceman says:

this fight is a joke, plain and simple.

it hurts cos im a roy fan, but the gut needs to give it away and stop trying to prove his critics wrong.

  • Seantonio says:

I can’t wait Roy is gonna tear B-hop a new one
