If Pacquiao’s fight against Clottey does well, Manny might not need to fight Mayweather

By Dave Lahr: Manny Pacquiao and Top Rank promotions were quick to select Joshua Clottey to fight as a replacement opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr. on March 13th at the Dallas Cowboy stadium, in Arlington, Texas. There’s no way of knowing how many boxing fans will be traveling to Texas to see the fight and how many will be interested in purchasing this fight on pay per view. The tickets for the fight are priced from $700, $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50 for fans wanting to travel all the way to Arlington, Texas.
After all, Pacquiao won’t need to if he’s making $15 million or more to fight the likes of Clottey. Why take a dangerous fight against Mayweather, which could end the gravy train if Mayweather dominates Pacquiao like I think he would, when there are plenty of other easy marks out there. The welterweight division isn’t exactly stacked with talent.
Once you get beyond Mayweather, Mosley, Cotto and Berto, the division is a wasteland of mediocrity. Sure, there’s young fighters like 19-year-old Saul Alvarez who may be a good fighter some day, but he isn’t there yet, not even close. Alvarez looks five to six years away. But it doesn’t really matter though if boxing fans are willing to scoop up Pacquiao’s fights in droves just to get the chance to see him fight.
All HBO has to do is to make sure they put together a Count Down or HBO 24/7 series and Pacquiao’s fights will probably do sensational numbers regardless of whether he’s fighting Mayweather or not. So why fight Mayweather and ruin all that for just one fight when you can milk it for a year or two and make it last.

The fight with Mosely and Floyd might not happen. According to a source close to the Mayweathers, Floyd is balking the idea of fighting Mosley because of the purse..or the lack of it. Floyd did the math, and his fight with Mosely will make him $10 million or less. The amount of money he will get is not worth the risk. He might sit out and wait the outcome of the Clottey vs Manny. He said basically why he would take $10 million or less when he can make $40 million or more with Manny and not having to take a risk fighting Mosely. Many think $10 million is a lot for Floyd but considering the money he owes, the lavish lifestyle, he needs a lot more. His expenses are, first the purse will be taxed, then he must pay…the IRS debts which he still owes. Banks are going after him for outstanding unpaid loans. Paying his entourage and staff. Paying his trainer Roger and his dad Floyd Sr. Also don’t forget his agent Leonard Ellerbe. Then Golden Boy will take their cut plus expenses accrued. Then Floyd must pay his gambling debts. Also he is facing foreclosure on some of his homes. Numerous exotic cars he owned were repoed. There are liens on his properties. Also his business ventures. His little charity organization called The Floyd Mayweather Foundation. And his most biggest expense…his lavish lifestyle. So in the end, he might just net $5 million or less.

The fans want the megafight between Pacman and Mayweather, but Manny doesnt need the Mayweather fight. Sure Arum will fight for leverage to make it happen because of the money, but with all Pacman has accomplished, he DEFINITELY DOESNT NEED MAYWEATHER to solidify his place in the annals of boxing history. All he has to do is push himself as he has fighting Oscar, Hatton and Cotto. IF Mayweather DOESNT WANT TO FIGHT HIM, then after Clottey, he can just fight Mosley then either Williams or better yet to solidify his place as not just one of the greats, but the greatest then beat Foreman for his 8th title. Sure it will suck for us fans and both sides will lose out on multi millions, but Manny can still strengthen his legacy in just 1-2 more fights while punk a$$ beeyotch floyd has ways to go. actually cant wait who chicken $hite WILL fight in the ring and not in the news.

Clottey is average btw, the best boxer he’s beat was Judah and lost to Baldomir, he hasn’t knocked anyone out for over 5 years.
The reason Mayweather didn’t fight Margarito was because he was in dispute with Bob Arum over the share of money he offered in a DLH fight, so Floyd split with Top Rank.
He wanted to fight Cotto when he first moved up to welterweight but Arum didn’t want them going against each other as he thought Cotto was still ‘green’ and wanted to build his rep as a welterweight first.
As for Mosley, he’s been calling him out since 1999 when Mayweather was a jr lightweight and Mosley was a lightweight, he last called him out in 2006 when he wanted to fight either him or DLH, Mosley ducked him because he was seen as a big risk for little reward, it wasn’t until Mayweather beat DLH and was the big draw that Mosley was interested, Floyd wouldn’t fight him then because Mosley wouldn’t give him the chance earlier when he wanted it.
Cotto has never been the undisputed champ whoever claimed it, Zab Judah was when Mayweather agreed to fight him only he lost to Baldomir in his tune up, Mayweather still fought and beat Judah and then beat Baldomir straight after.
Mayweather vs. Pacquiao will never happen. Pacquiao will never agree to random blood tests, he’ll be caught!

When you at the top of your game and have made millions already you don’t really need another pay day anyway. Pacs set for life like many other elite fighters (if he manages his money right!) whether he fights again after Clottey or not. The issue for me as a fan is the meaningful fights are not happening and that’s across the board not just Pac v Mayweather. To be honest as a neutral Pac v Clottey is an interesting match up, but sadly not one that gets the mouth salivating and the calender marked!…I’m sure there are people out there who know where I’m coming from.

Paul Williams: I think Clottey is a true African, which means he’s blacker than any fighter here in the U.S.A. including you. I agree that nobody wants to fight PW at WW, but I think you need to get through a rematch with Martinez and defeat him thoroughly or you might lose the invincible card.
Floyd had been a washed up fighter for about a decade now. His hands are shut and cannot fight without the aid of pain killer meds. How manny locked Hall of Famer did he fight? TWO; De La Hoya and the lightweight champ Marquez and that’s it. Because of the pain on his hands, he cannot fight frequently like other elite fighters and hesitant of taking on greater challenges. After the PEDS debacle, he’s running out of options and will actually end up taking risk and lose his beloved undefeated status. The botttom line, Floyd is no longer equipped to beat any elite fighter near his size and needs to go back into retirement.
Of course Manny doesn’t NEED to fight Mayweather! The thing is he WANTS to fight Floyd. I just don’t think its a question of NEED. Manny SHOULD fight Floyd just to try do something no-one has done yet: Hand him his first defeat, he will retire again. In any case a great fighter seeks out great competitors and like him or not, Mayweather would answer some interesting questions as to what kind of a fighter Manny has really become.
On the draft penalty of $10million for every pound in excess, what was the psychology behind this? My opinion is that Camp Pacquiao knows that Mayweather peddled his name as “Money May” because foremost, he really just respects “MONEY”!!!! So to make sure, it sticks, they had to give that steep penalty. Plus, the weight limit they were fighting “was the established level of 147lbs or Welterweight”. Compared to Mayweather, his demands for Olympic style blood testing is NOT ESTABLISHED in professional boxing. In fact, Pacquiao giving in to a few blood tests is already “BEYOND” the regular professional boxing requirements. Granted, that the sport likely needs to have better doping tests, but you don’t request Michael Jordan to these random blood testing for the 7th game play-offs or Roger Federer for the tennis grandslam just because you see them play very well. The boxing authorities need to properly vet out with sports medicine experts what would be the best for professional boxing, NOT A KNEE JERK REACTION from an athlete who has a history of slight of hand or not taking contracts at “face value” i.e. just see his recent stab against over-match Marquez. Or if the Mayweather Camp/fans really want a coup-de-grace against Pacquiao, then have a penalty of $20 million for any boxer caught having prohibited enhancing drugs, that way, Mayweather can accept Pac offer of 3 blood tests (including just after the fight) and get appropriately compensated if he is cheated. Otherwise, i think Floyd is really still looking for his balls i.e. aint he claiming to be the best, but, he is not EVEN FIGHTING THE BEST IN WELTERWEIGHT. What a dork.

How has floyd ducked people that never wanted to fight him? Margarito asked once but Floyd fought Judah for more money. and as for Mosley, we all know he has ducked Floyd for the last 10 years. Please, the fact is Mayweather-Mosley is happening in May and will be the biggest boxing event since De La Hoya-Mayweather. As for the level of competition Manny is fighting, he’s a -450 favorite. So, Pacfans can call floyd a chicken or ducker all they want, but come May 1 a lot of sports fans will see Mayweather fighting the top welterweight and hear how Manny beat someone they never heard of.
If Pacman is dirty and gets caught, he will not only be dishonored by the boxing world and committee, but by his legions of fans from his country for bringing shame. However, “Innocent till proven guilty” is still the reason why America is a wonderful country and the reason why I stand by Pacquiao and his Pound for Pound title.
I am bored with Mayweather and his desperate need for attention. He and his family are very shameful and very dishonorable. The reason why people love the Pacman and why Nike among other companies endorse him and shower him with fortune is because he is a gentleman. He pleases the masses and brings hope and joy to his Countrymen. That is a truly sellable commodity. How do you sell Mayweather other than “the guy everyone wants to beat”. True he has outstanding skills as a boxer. He is smart in the ring and lures his opponents into traps like a great hunter. However, the style, though effective, is not so fun to watch. Especially knowing that he should be challenging tougher opponents. But Pacquiao challenges larger, tougher opponents, Throws, throws, throws, gets hit every once in a while, dominates, and then defeats them, and then stays humble. He doesn’t claim to be the best. He says all his accomplishments came from God. The humility and humbleness is truly endearing and THAT my friend is the selling factor.
Truthfully, I would like Shane Mosley to take on Pacquiao. Mosley is a gentleman. Aggressive, a veteran fighter, and quick. I think this would be more sellable than Mayweather. Especially IF he succeeds in defeating Mayweather. But even I know that would be a BIG “if”. So good luck to all boxing fans and let’s pray we all get what we want. No matter if you are a fan of Pacquiao or a fan of Mayweather!
If Floyd wants to make sure that Pac is under the influence, why can’t he ask him to take the test after the fight and forget about that random test!!! Pacquiao stated that this already happened to him when he lost his fight against morales!!! He feels that he is not 100% and makes him feel weak! Therefore, there is a psycological effect on Manny!!! FACT Floyd’s request for Random blood testing was there from the get-go and nobody had a problem with it until Floyd agreed to all of Pac’s requests. Since then all ive heard is lies and excuses coming from Pac’s camp. How could any boxing fan or sports fan in general, not demand the most stringent testing available of their athletes? When May snr. come out with the steroid allegations i laughed to myself, not taking it seriously but when i saw Pac’s reaction and the multiple excuses coming from their camp i have to wonder whats he got to hide? Tygart (USADA)– also talks i.e. we are looking for the truth and fight for the clean athletes, but using a recent case against cyclist Landis as an example. Tygart refused to provide documentation requested by Landis’ defense team. To paraphrase his response, he said, “The rules don’t require me to give you any more than this, so I’m not going to.” The lab documentation package that we’ve all come to know and love, in Tygart’s mind, was all that Team Landis needed to defend Floyd Landis against the charges. Yes, Tygart giving that “following the rules” thing B/S . . but, throws mud against Nevada boxing organization. Another hypocrite. Further, As part of his request, Tygart told the arbitration panel that any positive results would be used against Landis. So Tygart was on a fishing expedition, searching for more evidence to use against Landis, even though Landis could not go on the same expedition to try and find evidence to exonerate himself. That’s not searching for truth, that’s trying to bolster a weak case.
We rest our case against these people who claim to be “so called the paragon of virtues”. Yup, virtues my ass!!!

The only problem is that these random blood tests have never—yes that’s right—never found Human Growth Hormone in any Olympic athlete that has ever been tested.
Interesting, huh?
Mayweather somehow believes that if his opponent Pacquiao who has never failed a drug test, refuses to take a test that has never caught anyone, then this fight can’t happen.
How does this make sense? It doesn’t. No wait, maybe Mayweather knows something the rest of us don’t…no wait, maybe Mayweather is just trying to avoid the best fighter he has ever met.
But hold on, it gets even better.
Mayweather’s camp has somehow wrangled the alliance of Travis Tygart, CEO of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, to try and spin this whole charade of events in their favor.
Tygart has told Yahoo Sports! that Pacquiao’s resistance to submit to the blood tests “would provide a huge loophole for a cheater to step through and get away with cheating.”

USADA announced last year that they were funding a company that has developed a test to detect HGH in urine. And Pacquiao, as everyone knows, has agreed to submit to as many random urine tests as the Mayweather camp would like.
Tygart even told USA Today last year that the developers, Ceres Nanosciences, “have developed an outstanding technology. And we’re looking forward to helping them develop it further so it can have a practical use in anti-doping efforts.”
Yesterday, Ceres Nanosciences launched the first release of that new technology, NanotrapTM ESP Particles.
These particles are designed to improve complex biofluid sample processing allowing for the detection of low-abundance proteins that would not otherwise be detected and also uses existing medical equipment.
What this means, simply, is that HGH use is now detectable through testing of urine samples and the breakthrough technology is officially ready to “Rock-and-Roll.”
Now we’ll find out if Mayweather is ready to do the same.

You guys who want unlimited random blood testing are ridiculous. What is so damn important that you demand so much out of your athletes? Do you think that pilots, doctors, nurses, bus drivers, police officers, soldiers, and lawyers go through that level of testing? HELL NO! They have much more important jobs that the lives of many people depend on. And you want to make a big deal about a clean fighter who doesn’t want blood tests? Ask your surgeon or the surgeon who will operate on grandma to take a drug test before he operates and he will tell you NO! How many times have you asked you child’s teacher or babysitter to undergo random blood tests for drugs? The truth is your demands for random blood tests for a boxer are so unnecessary. You should be making sure that the person watching your kids is clean. You should be making sure that the guy flying your plane is sober. If your not making these kind of demands when it counts, you have your priorities out of order.

I’ve been waiting a long time for Mosley vs Mayweather to happen, but still won’t believe it till is signed and delivered for the fans. I have my doubts and think Mayweather will squirm his way out of this fight too, against what boxing fans want to see. Demetry: I’ll just say that ticket sales for Manny vs Cotto sold out within a couple weeks at full price whereas PBF vs Marquez had to be discounted and given away in packages to fill the seats. Didn’t seem like there was much of a draw when PBF came back from retirement. PBF was a big draw and probably still is, but wasn’t willing to go head to head in a payperview war on March 13th because he would have lost that part of his persona as the money maker in boxing.

I think Clottey is a formidable opponent if you are putting Cotto as one of the top WW. Clottey has never been knocked out and has solid skills that will give any of the WW problems. Funny that Mayweather is even on your list as a top WW given that he hasn’t fought any of the other guys on your list. Don’t get me wrong, Mayweather has exceptional boxing skills, but to believing that Manny avoids the best and think that Mayweather doesn’t seems a little biased to me.
