Hatton vs. Khan: Is it only a matter of time?

By Nate Anderson: Now that WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan has signed with Golden Boy Promotions, it would seem like the last obstacle has been removed from A UK mega fight between Amir and Ricky Hatton. Previously, Hatton was hesitant to fight Khan while Amir was promoted by Frank Warren. That excuse isn’t there for Hatton now. If he doesn’t want to fight at this point, who knows what is the problem holding him up from doing so.

It can’t be for lack of money that the fight would generate, because this is the biggest fight that can be made in Britain right now. In an interview with the BBC, Hatton said that he’s looking to fight one more time and that he didn’t see Khan as a priority for him.

However, that was before the news broke that Khan signed with Golden Boy Promotions. With that signing, Hatton should have no excuse for not taking the big money for this fight. If Hatton’s main priority is to fight for a title, then this is his big chance. He doesn’t need to wait for Juan Urango and Devon Alexander to get freed up to fight him. Khan would be right there for the taking.

I’m fairly sure that Khan would be patient with Hatton and would be willing to wait for Ricky to pare off the massive amount of weight that he’s put in the past eight months. It would be worth Khan’s while to wait on this fight if allowed to by the WBA. However, if they’re insistent on Khan defending his title against Maidana, then he should vacate the title and focus exclusively on the waiting on Hatton.

Hatton, if he is interested in taking the super fight with Khan, he needs to speak up and no ruin his chance. Khan might not be there for him if he doesn’t go after him now. Hatton already messed up a chance at fighting Oscar De La Hoya in 2008. Instead of going after that fight, Hatton opted to fight Paulie Malignaggi and ended up making a lot less money than he would have made in the De La Hoya bout.

Manny Pacquiao, in turn, ended up fighting De La Hoya and made a huge payday and retired Oscar in the process. That could have been Hatton’s fight if he had wanted it. Hatton can’t let this fight with Khan slip though his fingers like he did with De La Hoya. If not Khan, who will Hatton fight? Juan Manuel Marquez? That might be an interesting fight, but it won’t make the kind of money or draw the same kind of interest than a Khan-Hatton fight. Additionally, Hatton has a good chance of being beaten by Marquez and that would minimize a chance against Khan down the road.

If Hatton was thinking about sticking around in the sport of boxing for a couple of years, maybe I could see him not fighting Khan. But Hatton is talking about fighting one, possibly two more times before retiring. How can’t he want to fight Khan with that little time left? Another reason to fight Khan now is that there are huge question marks about his own, as well as Khan’s chin.

Both of these fighters can go at any time if they’re hit right. Hatton needs to wake up and smell the coffee. He can’t let this chance go by because it might be the only one he has left.

I think if it comes off Ricki will give a very good account of himself providing khan is brave enough to even take the fight. After all khan got dropped by prescot and Ricki got dropped by many but i imagine ricki will not cheery pick his opponant like amir and his camp will.that is because Ricki is a true fighing warrior taking on all comers.I mean when you watched salti come out for the first round against khann and take up his stance i have seen better positioning from some of the young lads at the local pool hall.Come on amir prove all us doubters wrong and share the ring with a worthy apponant not the likes of salta and a old legend like barrera, and what a legend he was a man more than worthy of being called a true world champion.

Matthew Porter, Do you know anything about boxing? Most Clearly not, In terms of garden treats, Hatton would be scared of Khan. Tszyu, Mayweather dont posses any real gammon threats. Pacman does, but Khan can hold his own with Pacman which is why Hattons scared. Hatton is like a dog trying to eat the falling snow, once is turmoil allways beyond reach, Fact!

Khan is shaping up as the British version of Mayweather or Mundine. He is a quality fighter with awesome skills but like Mundine and Mayweather has a carefully stage managed career in front of him. I can’t see Khan fighting anyone with any real power or speed, especially now he has a 3 fight deal with GBP. You wouldn’t want your first fight under GBP to be a KO loss to Hatton, even if it was a big money fight.

Khan ducked the whole lightweight division for a mickey mouse title shot at a nobody that he didn’t earn or deserve. There are still 6 or 7 guys at lightweight that would clean up Khan (Valero, Katsidis, Marquez, Diaz, etc)

I think Hatton still has enough for Khan. Khan is not as sharp or as quick as mayweather and Pacman who are the only 2 guys Hatton has been dominated by. Think Paulie Malinaggi Vs Hatton for a pretty solid guide to how a Hatton Vs Khan fight would go down.

While the money is good there is no way GBP would risk their new UK money maker on any tough fight, let alone Hatton.

Oli and Bifrin, what source do you have for Hatton saying he won’t fight Khan?

    A coward???

Hatton needs to fight a safe fight first that won’t drain him to see how he feels back in the ring – I’m sure both you morons can understand that and if you had the spines yourself and were in the same boat, would do exactly the same right?

I imagine he will then fight him after.

Tbh I don’t think Roach would let him fight Hatton just yet, he would wait for him to underperform or get beat then would let Khan go all out to pressure him into fighting for Khans purposes only.

That seems to be how Roach and co pick fights.

Hatton coming back after a 2nd round KO, shows he has a lot of courage. You guys are nuts to think otherwise.

Khan however – he just doesnt seem up front to me and i get the idea he will be stagemanaged.

He needs to fight Maidana or I’ll stop following him.

  • Bifrin Halgrate says:

Its crazy, they’d make so much money if they went with the fight. It’d be great, I just wish Hatton wasn’t being a coward. It looks like he just wants a couple more easy matches and thats it for him.

  • Oli says:

Khan is a joke and i still think hattons afraid.

To BOB- Its ok losing to thr P4P king when nobody expects you to win, you dont lose face, and you can only gain from it you dont really lose much.

But its NOT okay losing to an Amir Khan in front of a british public who strongly expects you to win, and you DO lose face if that happens. Thats what i mean by saying hattons afraid. Its a risk in his state now and everyone would be horrified if he did lose (which he could)

  • Luke says:

Without disregarding Khan’s electrifying speed, I feel Hatton would only need to land one decent punch and the Khan would be knocked out or wobbled, therefore Hatton capitalizing and then knocking him or or having the fight stopped. See Hatton is over the hill but by how much? If he has one decent fight in him the Khan bout makes pefect sense for everybody concerned.

  • Oli says:

hatton says, hes my friend!!…But thats not stopping khan from calling him out every week, khan wants it so why doesnt ricky?

Hatton scared of losing to another british fighter, he ducked witter now hes making excuses for khan, a fight which ought to be an easy world title win. Why not ricky? are you scared?

  • Oli says:

lets hear his new excuse, hattons clearly scared of khan
