Gamboa too sharp and too quick stops Mtagwa in 2

By Sam Gregory: In tonight’s co-main event on Boxing After Dark from The Theater at Madison Square Garden undefeated Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa improved his undefeated record when he out-boxed and out-classed Rogers Mtagwa in a scheduled 12 round fight in the featherweight division for the WBA world featherweight title.

To Mtagwa’s credit he was a very game fighter doing his best to defend against the brutal onslaught of punches from Gamboa. In round one Gamboa came out hard and fast landing his lightening fast jab followed with a solid left to the body. Gamboa scored a knockdown in the last few seconds of the round when he landed a solid left hook to the head of Mtagwa.

In the second round Gamboa came out looking like he had every intention of winning this fight with a knockout. With a minute and a half left in the round Gamboa scored another knockdown; seconds later Gamboa scored another hard knockdown; at that point referee Steve Smoger stepped in and called a halt to the bout at 2:35 of round two.

Yuriorkis Gamboa improved his undefeated record to 17-0 with 15 KO’s; Rogers Mtagwa fell to 26-14 with 18 KO’s.
