Froch, Kessler, Ward, Dirrell and Abraham: Which fighters will come out ahead in Stage 2 of the Super Six?
By William Mackay: After group stage 1 of the Super Six tournament we have former IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham ahead of the pack with three points with WBC super middleweight Carl Froch and Andre Ward following closely behind with two points. Coming in with no points as of yet are Andre Dirrell, Mikkel Kessler and Jermain Taylor, the losers of the group stage 1 contests. Taylor recently pulled out of the Super Six tournament, and his replacement will be chosen from the winner of the Allan Green vs. Sakio Bika fight which takes place next month in February.
Below I’ve outlined the group stage 2 fights coming up:
Andre Ward vs. Sakio Bika or Allan Green – Like I said, Bika and/or Green have a mountain to climb in facing Ward. Andre will be fighting at home in front of a huge audience, and he seems to fight really well with a huge crowd behind him rooting him on. Ward’s defensive and offensive skills are exceptional as is his hand speed. Green, a very fast puncher, would be the tougher fight compared to the slower and wilder Bika. However, I suspect that Ward will easily handle Green who I think will go into his shell like he did in his loss to Edison Miranda. Green looked intimidated in that fight and didn’t get his punches off. If he fights that way against Ward, this will be an easy fight for Andre.
Prediction: Ward by lopsided decision over Green or Bika
Carl Froch vs. Mikkel Kessler – Froch has the luck of coming into this fight against Kessler who was softened up by Ward in his last fight. Froch needs to take advantage of this by going after Kessler hard from the start of the fight and to do anything he can to make it a rough fight. Froch needs to do all he can to upset Kessler and get him out of his game like Ward did to him in his last fight. The good thing for Froch is that he seems to naturally be good at fighting rough, so he has a shorter learning curve. He needs to make it physically hard for Kessler when he gets in close to him, because Froch won’t be a match for Kessler on the outside where Kessler is much more highly skilled than Froch. It may take some really brutally rough fighting from Froch to get Kessler upset enough to the point where he’s not thinking clearly. Kessler will probably be ready for Froch to do some extracurricular activity in the ring after seeing Froch’s fight with Dirrell, so Froch might have to make it tougher for him than he would a normal opponent. I think the fight comes down to whether Froch can rough Kessler up enough to get him upset to the point where he’s not thinking clearly. If Froch tries to box with him or knock him out, then I see Kessler easily beating Froch. But if Froch roughs Kessler up all night long it will be a different story and I can see Froch winning under those circumstances. I think that’s what Froch do, so I’m picking him to win.
Prediction: Froch by close 12 round decision
Andre Dirrell vs. Arthur Abraham – Dirrell lost a controversial 12 round split decision to Froch in his first fight of the Super Six tournament and he has a lot to prove to boxing fans still. Although Dirrell lost a fight that many boxing fans felt he should have won, he failed to distinguish himself in that fight because of his reluctance to trade with Froch. Dirrell looked timid much of the time and held Froch any chance he could get. If Dirrell is able to minimize his holding and stand and face down Abraham with both guns blazing, he has a chance to win this fight going away. But Dirrell can’t win it by clinching and falling on the canvas all the time like he did against Froch. Dirrell looked and fought like a wet noodle much of the time in his last fight and it caused him to throw away a fight that he could have very easily haven won had he just stood his ground and fought. Abraham brings pretty much the same qualities into the fight as Froch did. Abraham will be coming forward a lot trying to land a big shot to take Dirrell out. The one advantage that Dirrell will have in this fight, besides his speed, is his size. Abraham is only 5’10” and will be giving up four inches in height and three inches in reach to Dirrell. This could be a factor for Dirrell if he’s smart and stays on the outside using his jab. He can’t run though and is going to have to be willing to trade with Abraham if he wants to come out of this fight with a win.
Prediction: Dirrell by 12 round decision

JOHN HOPKINS ARGREE MIKKEL KESSLER OVER CARL FROCH ARTHUR ARABHAM OVER DIRRELL SAKIO BIKA OVER ALAN GREEN TIME3.50 TUESDAY JANUARY 19 2010
Andre Ward vs. Sakio Bika or Allan Green –
It is difficult to see one of the two beating Andre Ward at home. Ward not only was quick and variable in the fight against Kessler, he was also very smart.
Prediction: Ward hands down in a decision rather than a knock out.
Carl Froch vs. Mikkel Kessler – Kessler was badly prepared for Ward. Not so much physically, but strategy wise. I believe that redemption may be the slightly bigger motivator here and Kessler will have a good showing. This indeed will be the best fight of the three from the credentials.
Prediction: Kessler by close 12 round decision
Andre Dirrell vs. Arthur Abraham – The way to stop Abraham is to utilise his slow starts and pull out a point advantage without getting knocked out. In recent times however Arthur has gotten a whole lot better in the early stages of fights and his power has not been affected by the step up in the super middleweight division. In my opinion this is as clear cut as the Ward – Bika/Green fight clearly favouring Abraham. Here I fully concur with Rob “Jabbing on the backfoot at Arthur’s great defence will get you nowhere, you really have to box with him, moving left to right hooking around his defence rather then trying to go trough it or counterpunch.” Enough said.
Prediction: Abraham in Round 6 or 7.
SC: Nothing to do with losing. It just annoys me when the bad side of boxing is exposed and NOT dealt with. Yes Kessler was soundly beaten, but thats not the point. If you cant see that, then STFU.
agree with Rob.
Dirrell will get KO’s if he tries to trade with Abraham. I doubt he will though-he will hit the guard and run. It will come down to
1. If Abraham can caqtch him-if he does he wins by KO
2. If Abraham does not catch him it will be whether Dirrell’s weak shots or Abrahams attempts to make a fight of it get the judges eyes
I think Taylor would have caused ward problems… Shame that. Ward still jumps in when he throws a left hook. I can see one of the bigger jitters exploiting that.
Dirrell I can’t see getting to Abraham at all. The question is can Abraham get to him?
Froch and kessler I think is the most interesting fight. Mikkel may surprise a few people. He won’t be as rusty as he was against ward for one.
BLOODTEST ALL OF THEM LATELY
THERE BEEN A LOT OF CHEATING
BOXING NEEDS TO BE A CLEAN SPORT
KA, Get over it and move on!
Your fighter, Kessler was shut out! SHUT OUT! Nothing to do do with Hometown. You sound like a sore looser…..
I think there are still a few suprises in store in this tourney yet.Dirrel fighting an altogether different fight to the froch debacle. This time i can see him being more aggressive and his hand speed will be too much for an abraham too reliant on the knock out punch.Hell be outscored all night and wont get in range of dirrel.Taylor had him sussed untill his customry late surrender. As for the other bouts, well ward will win easy decisions against either of the two subs, and froch will just outpoint a wary kessler.
KA this tournament is rigged so that Ward wins. I think he will be knocked out by Arthur Abraham though
@ Ka,
You definitely have a point there then… I did not know that.
Rob:
I have no problem with the fight being in the US, it should be since they are both americans, but why in Oakland, in Wards hometown?
My estimate of the Ward vs Bika or Green depends entirely on who wins the Bika vs Green fight.
If it’s Bika, Ward will problably win a lopsided decision like MacKay thinks. But I’m not so sure if it’s Green. I totally disagree with the author that Green would go in defence mode like vs Miranda, because Miranda’s powerfull punches are the reason for that… and Ward’s punching power doesn’t come close. If it’s Green I see a comfortable (4 to 5) points win for Ward, or a sudden (T)KO for Green.
@ Ka, of course this fight is in the USA because the original Ward vs Taylor fight was an all American bout.
For the Froch – Kessler bout I agree for the most part with William. But I think the reason that Froch wins (not easy btw) is that he now can open up Mikkels cuts again that Ward made with his head. So I see a late cut/tko stoppage or a close decision for Froch.
I think the Dirrell vs Abraham bout is a lot easier to call than a lot of people think. Jabbing on the backfoot at Athurs great defence will get you nowhere, you really have to box with him, moving left to right hooking around his defence rather then trying to go trough it or counterpunch. Counterpunching would be a good idea if you’re a fast powerpuncher but Dirrell is just fast. So I see him walk Dirrell down and knock him out as early as round 7 or 8.
I’ve said it before but I think the more people underestimate Froch the further he will go. His heart is huge and his stamina is amazing… but its his power and chin that always surprise opponents. I think he will stop Kessler by sheer force of will causing a late stoppage – think Hatton against Tzysu.
Dirrell was impressive and I am looking forward to his “chess match” against the highly unique and equally impressive Abraham. I could not pick a winner in my head but my heart says Abraham. He has such an exciting style.
Ward is obviously the clear favourite for the entire tournament now. No-one saw the Kessler result coming and he has a pretty easy route to the semi’s now as I actually thought Taylor would have given his a few problems.
