Erik Morales to stage comeback in March against Alfaro – News

By Jim Dower: According to ESPN writer Dan Rafael, 33-year-old boxing great Erik Morales (48-6, 34 KO’s) will begin a six fight comeback on March 27th against former World Boxing Association lightweight champion Jose Alfaro (23-5, 20 KO’s). Morales, a former three division champion during his prime years, has lost five out of his last six bouts and hasn’t fought in three years since losing a close controversial 12 round unanimous decision to David Diaz in August 2007.

It’s unknown why Morales has decided to stage a comeback at this point. Morales had an excellent 14-year pro career with multiple big money fights against Manny Pacquiao and Marco Antonio Barrera. Morales fought Pacquiao three times, beating him once and losing twice. After his win over Pacquiao in 2005, weight began to become an issue for Morales, as he struggled to make weight for his super featherweight bouts with Pacquiao and subsequently lost both of them looking weight drained.

In his last fight, Morales moved up to lightweight and looked and fought a lot better, appearing to have beaten Diaz by a 12 round decision in the minds of many boxing fans. However, the decision went to Diaz, and Morales quickly retired after that fight rather than continue his career.

Morales’ fight with Alfaro will be shown on pay-per-view, Rafael reports. It’s unknown how many boxing fans will want to purchase that fight considering that Morales has been away from the sport for so many years and Alfaro isn’t a well known fighter. This is a very dangerous fight for Morales. Alfaro, only 26, is ranked number #2 in the WBC and #6 in the WBA lightweight division and considered to be one of the top fighters in the division. Morales may be making a big mistake by taking on a good fighter like Alfaro rather than seeking out a couple of tune-up bouts to get the rust off.

I’m sure that Morales would have been able to handle a fighter like Alfaro in his prime, but after three years away and with five losses out of his six fights, Morales is really taking a big gamble by taking on someone like Alfaro. That brings me to another thing. If Morales does choose to fight through the entire six fight contract through 2010 and 2011, he could wind up with six more losses on his record if he’s not really careful in selecting his opponents.

The thing with Morales is that he’s not the type of guy that will be comfortable with taking on lower level quality fighters. He wants to face the best. But after being out for three years, Morales needs to slow down his ambitions a little. He’s been in a lot of ring wars during his career and there may not be much left of his once impressive skills.

Alfaro was stopped in the 10th round by Antonio Demarco in his last fight in October 2009. Alfaro made it interesting before getting caught in the 10th round and taken out. In December 2007, Alfaro defeated Prawet Singwancha by a 12 round split decision to capture the vacant WBA lightweight crown. However, he lost his title in his next bout against Yusuke Kobori in a third round stoppage in May 2008.

This is fantastic news for boxing. As far as I’m concerned Erik Morales is the VERY BEST BRAVEST fighter who has EVER stepped into the boxing ring – the guy is an absolute LEGEND who always gives 100% of his heart & soul into all his fights.

Erik Morales had so many fights very close together including the 3 battles with Barrera & Pacquio. He has also been treated very badly by crazy decisions by judges when it was clear to everybody that he won so many of the fights they gave to his opponents.

A lot of boxers can eat what ever they like before a fight, allowing them to go into the fight with lots of energy. Erik Morales always had to stop eating before his fights to make the weight & he went into them with hardly any energy at all & STILL FOUGHT WITH THE HEART OF A LION & was unbeaten for a very long time.

I think Erik Morales is the greatest boxing legend in the world & his body needed to recover from so many hard fights that he had – how many boxers can anyone really think of who stayed on his feet & returned ferocious punches the way this guy always has done?

ERIK MORALES IS BOXINGS GREATEST EVER FIGHTER & I’M GLAD HES BACK, he has been able to gain his strength & fully recover & the whole world is going to see the return of El Terrible in a massive way.

Erik Morales deserves every boxing fans respect because he has given us his best since the start of his career & boxing has not been the same without him.

people of poor faith, why everybody looks soo sure , about terrible not been able too do something, if he is coming back is for something , money? noooo, he has bussines ans a very good position in tijuana, fame? more i dont think soo, he got a lot of that, but he has the will, the hunger and the greatness of a fighter, he is one of a kind and plus,is 33, not 40 , 33, still strong and i think he is coming for something , last fight he was robed, diaz lost to him clear and loud, that stupid desition would have had change the course of his carrer for better, im soo glad and happy for him to come back, i just love his boxing style and technique, power, heart, everything, please give the guy a brake, and more than all, respect as a great fighter that he is and will be because greatness never ends, after a few fights if he can’t . well i will say , good for the great memories that he brings to me and those who enjoyed watching him. but meanwhile, just wait, no one has the time machine to know whats coming, results, not predictions, thats what smart people do.

i saw morales at the vazquez vs marquez rubbermatch and he must have been at least 200 pounds. he looked like a dark roberto duran.

Fairly sure Morales is past his prime but another fight with Barrera definately worth watching

  • kingalex says:

I read in the news that this fight is at welterweight, not at lightweight.

  • gio says:

I used to be a fan of morales and always knew he could give viewers a good fight with lots of entertainment. Its cool that he is making a comeback but I just dont feel that he has anything left anymore.

  • lex_fugitive says:

Morales lost his last four fights. The fight before that he beat Manny. the fight before that he lost. As for Alfaro, he might be a good, tough fighter but I’ve never heard of him and Morales losing to Zahir Rahim doesn’t equal a PPV. What happened to boxing?!? Why is everything on PPV now?? Didn’t Morales and Barrera fight on regular HBO? Wasn’t ODLH-Sturm on regular HBO?? Now Morales-Anfredo, Pacquiao-clottey, and a fight between two 40+ year olds are all PPV fights???

  • roy says:

Morales and pac are good friends, goes to pac partys, last I seen him year ago he was over 200lb it would be amazing to see fighting at lightweight, and a hard fight.he a exciting fighter .

  • jasz says:

Morales is definitely a class fighter, definitely one of my favorites. He fights with all his heart. You can see that during his 3 fights with Pacquiao. Also, Morales fights cleanly unlike Barrera who fights dirty especially when he gets frustrated.

But, I’m not sure if Morales should come back again. He’s been off for around 3 yrs. But a great fighter he will always be.

  • Ancient_Silence says:

Morales, you got to love this guy. With some boxers you know instantly that there is something to them that you like. Morales is one of those guys for me. He loves fighting and even when things are tight in a fight he continues throwing punches. It is true he is taking a bit of a gamble by coming back now and yes he might lose a few more fights but I’m pretty sure he will give it everything he has regardless. Much the same way some people feel about Ricky Hatton returning to the ring i think. This year we will find out if the last wave of fighters still have what it takes to bring us great fights ( and no i am not including Hopkins/Jones 2 as a possible great fight!)

  • Ibrar arshaid says:
