Duddy stops Astorga

By Jim Dower: Middleweight contender John Duddy (28-1, 18 KO’s) continued with his comeback with a 1st round stoppage win over 2nd tier opponent Juan Astorga (14-4-1, 9 KOs) tonight at the Madison Square Garden, New York, New York. Duddy, 30, unloaded on Astorga with heavy shots at the start of the fight and caused him to take a knee. Duddy launched into Astorga with a series of blistering shots after the action resumed and knocked Astorga to the canvas. Referee Wayne Kelly then stepped in and stopped the bout at 1:55 of the 1st.

Duddy, ranked number #9 in the World Boxing Organization middleweight division, is trying to rebuild his career after losing a 10 round split decision last year in April to Billy Lyell. This is Duddy’s 2nd consecutive win since that loss and a much better performance compared to his last fight, an eight round decision over Michi Munoz in October.
