Did Pacquiao make a mistake by not fighting Mayweather?

By Jim Dower: Although Manny Pacquiao and his team feel that they did the right thing by not agreeing to take random blood tests within 24 days of the failed March 13th fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., I think Pacquiao may have made a mistake by not sticking it out and continuing to negotiate with Mayweather to make the fight happen. It seemed like Pacquiao and his team hastily moved away from the fight rather than trying to split the difference of 24 days.

If anything, they might have been able to get Mayweather to agree to have the random blood tests stop at three weeks. It would have been worth trying. Instead, Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum opted to fight Joshua Clottey, a fighter who just lost to Miguel Cotto by a 12 round decision in his last fight. If Pacquiao hadn’t just finished dominating Cotto in a 12th round knockout in November then I could maybe ignore the loss by Clottey.

However, it’s hard to get excited about seeing Pacquiao fight someone who was just beaten by Pacquiao’s last victim. I can understand the interest for Pacquiao fighting Clottey, since both fighters compete with Top Rank promotions and it’s an ideal situation for them to not have to share the promotional duties. But I think Pacquiao and his team really missed the boat on this one by not sticking it out and trying to work something out with Mayweather.

At the very least this fight deserved it. This wasn’t a case of Pacquiao fighting a rematch with Marco Antonio Barrera in a fight that really made no sense to be taking place. Mayweather is considered by many to be the best fighter in boxing, and if Pacquiao wants to take the mantle away from him, he needed to have his management team explore every avenue possible to make the bout happen.

Boxing fans really can’t understand how a fighter and his team could walk away from payday of $25 million to $40 million. That just seems hard to understand. You can say that Pacquiao doesn’t need money, but I do think he cares about wanting to take on the best opponents. If not money, then I know Pacquiao cares about wanting to fight the best.

I think it looks bad in walking away from this fight. And choosing Clottey doesn’t make things better. If you’re going to walk away from the Mayweather fight, at least take on someone like Shane Mosley or Paul Williams. I know the welterweight division has few credible opponents but I think someone better than Clottey surely could have been found.

I don’t care about Clottey’s ranking. I don’t see him as the number #1 contender by the WBA and WBO since he was beaten in his last fight and beaten by Antonio Margarito in 2006. This fight is about as interesting as watching Pacquiao fight David Diaz again. But even the Diaz fight seemed more appealing to me, because at least he had a title in his possession at the time that he fought Pacquiao unlike Clottey.

No matter how I look at the Mayweather PED accusation, I cannot believe that not only is it still debated, but that it is still an issue. Like has been said, be careful what you ask for. So in fairness, I wish that all PBF fans get what you ASK for. The next time any of you are accused and arrested, all the arresting officer needs is that “he believes that you have done wrong and are guilty.” because I know a lot of you WILL BE GOING through this at some point or another in your life. The officer, the prosecutor and the judge WILL NO LONGER BE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE PROOF to accuse and find you guilty. They can administer any testing, demands and take away your RIGHTS as they please and if you DO NOT follow their requests, then you ARE ABSOLUTELY GUILTY.
As for Poultry Boy Fraud, you may have money and success but you cant buy “class,” the same way that you CANNOT DEMAND or BUY RESPECT. Sure you are surrounded by many who want to PROTECT their investment, the same way Manny’s people want to protect him. And in a truly remarkable fashion, your management team has tried to “RE-BRAND” you, as a kind father, caring philanthropist, even someone interested in politics “during the Obama campaign” and now the reformer of boxing-introducing unheard of testing in ANY PROFESSIONAL sport much less BOXING to clean it up. Your ignorant following take every word and can only regurgitate the $hit that comes out of your camp. But the good thing about life is, it is long enough to show your true colors. Your facade will FALL as you are not INTELLIGENT enough to maintain this charade. You write your own HISTORY. You are a pompous, egotistical and despicable human being. I dont have to WISH it, YOU WILL show it eventually, as you and your family has continually done. AS I MENTIONED, the accuser SR. who fabricated this entire story WITHOUT PROOF IS A COVICTED FELON. JR. HAS MORE VIOLENT ARRESTS AND CONVICTIONS than he has titles or Manny has lineal championships. You tried to “re-brand” but was investigated by the IRS soon afterwards (OH I WISH THEY TOOK YOUR APPROACH). Roger, because I WANT all you PBF fans to get what you want, IS GUILTY in assaulting St. Vil, NO NEED FOR a TRIAL. As for PBF being interested and understanding politics or science, he is an educated expert in the matter, LMAO. Not even the REASONABLE DOUBT that Manny has on his side they both fought at the same weight class at 16 or that others GREATS like Roberto Duran, Tommy Hearns and Archie Moore who ended their careers OVER 50 lbs heavier while continuing to KO opponents and win championships is enough. SO REMEMBER THIS when any of you ARE WALKING Manny’s shoes.
AS for Manny, just because you don’t understand him or know anyone around YOU like him, he is the polar opposite you and your fans. He is a true gentleman who has shown nothing but class and respect. He IS WRITING a good history of himself.

if i was manny pacquio i would tell him ill take the stupid test but i want 70 /30

  • tiger1223usa says:

if manny beats clotty and fm does not fight mosley and fm wants to fight pac again fm will not get 50 /50 and cry then the fight wont happen again

  • uniquefan says:

Knuckles, it is more than that. You do not allow one fighter to play King and dismiss the NSAC and make his own rules and dictate to you. That would only serve to futher confirm that you acknowledge the he is the king of boxing and that he is bigger than boxing and that all roads lead to him. A champion like Pac does not bow to May. Maybe it is stupid ego to both walk away from a combined $90M but already May got the billing to say May Pac rather than Pac May even though Pac is the champion. When Leonard Ellerbe was asked why May got the first billing, he didn’t say because Pac gave in to May’s demand. He said it was because May was “hands down the best fighter pound for pound on the planet”. He took that concession to mean an acknowledgment from Pac that May was the pound for pound best. If Pac agreed to let May play boxing commissioner and make the rules for the fight, he may as well go into the fight with his hat in his hand. Score one for May as psychological advantage. You cannot let this guy bully you. Pac made the right decision.

  • JV says:

I think it’s Mayweather who made a mistake not making the fight happen by demanding random blood test. If he wants to fight the best like Manny he should just let it go and fight Manny.

Pls. read Jason Kim’s article and decide if Pacquiao really made a mistake of not fighting Mayweather??? Just decide and ask yourself if your a boxing fan who really made a mistake of not taking the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. Who has more publicity now and who attracts more fans. Do you think if Mayweather-??? bout on the same date as Pacquiao-Clottey will be more PPV buys. Think again who will be the PPV King. Pacquiao team has all the marketing tool they need to publicize their fight compare to Mayweather. I don’t think Pacquiao needs Mayweather, it’s Mayweather that needs Pacquiao.

  • Jeffrey says:

Perhaps Arum’s bluff did not work, but this writer should know that it is totally not okey to tarnish someone’s reputation by disseminating press release insinuating pac is on roids. Mayweather and GBP should not opted to use dirty strategy and should have stayed in the negotiating table in the first place to achieve a compromise. It is a bad precedent that somebody can just demand to his opponent to submit to his own rule. If youhave all common sense, ask yourself. who walked away from the fight? The person who is being reasonable or the person who is demanding something that is unprecedented?

  • Manolito says:

Pacquiao don’t need the garbage mayweather. Pacquiao
will survive without mayweather. This foul/dirty mouthed
mayweather got no place in a Pacquiao deal. Its a good
thing Pacquiao didn’t stoop down to mayweather’s category.
Pacquiao just have too much CLASS compared to the may-
weather people. these people belong to the GHETTO. they
shoul be brought back there. they got no place in a
    civilized world.

  • el diablo says:

Get your facts correctly sir. Pacquiao cannot call out Shane Mosley. He is supposed to fight Berto untill this earthquake hit Haiti. I can assure you, with his history of ducking respectable opponents, he will not fight Shane. He is too risky and less money to be made. Pacquiao can carry himself in PPV numbers with or without Little Floyd. I hope Floyd will fight Ivan Calderon, less risk. Let’s see it on the Animal Channel(Chicken Floyd).

  • uniquefan says:

Knuckles it is not a question of confidence. At least not from Pac. Pac doesn’t like getting his blood taken. It in invasive. It makes him weak for a few days afterwards. He took a blood test the day before Morales fight and lost. May wanted unlimited and random. So if it takes him 3 days to recover and he is tested every say 3 days or even more frequently, how the hell is he supposed to have an effective training camp? Tattoos? Very different than blood test. A bunch of tiny pin pricks that just barely break the skin versus a hypodermic needle inserted into your vein, and remaining in your vein for several minutes while it sucks you blood into a tube. VERY different. It doesn’t bother Floyd. It does bother Pac. Some people are different that way. Floyd knows this and is using that to mislead the public. He is exploiting that difference when he says innocently that he cannot understand because he is willing to do it so why not Pac? Must be hiding something. May is master of the con. If you are claustrophobic (fear of small places) and I am not and I ask you to spend 3 hours confined inside a small box and I will do the same, for me it will be slightly uncomfortable, but for you it would be truamatic. If Pac had to deal with someone sticking a needle in his arm every other day while he is training, May is hoping he either comes into the fight waaay under 100% or May can use it to get out of the fight. This has nothing to do with leveling any playing field. By the way, Oscar De La Hoya fought Vargas when Vargas was on steroids and knocked him out. If May was so confident that this would be an “easy work” day for him and that Pac, as Sr. says, is “terrible and doesn’t even move his head” then why not just go ahead and fight him anyway and go with the test after the fight. The new urine tests detect more than any blood test anyway and Pac will take unlimited amounts of those up to the fight BECAUSE THEY ARE NON INVASIVE AND DO NOT DISRUPT HIS TRAINING. It is not as is he will turn into the incredible hulk from gamma radiation even if he was taking anything. Matthew Hatton could fight him and stipulate as part of the contract that he be allowed to take as many PED’s HGH’s and anything else he could think of and you think May would not take that fight?

  • uniquefan says:

Knuckles, you really believe that? Then you are another pawn in the Mayweather con game.

    1. A blood after the fight would detect anything Pac may have been taking. Period. End of story. Right?

    2. There are new high tech urine tests that just came out that WILL DETECT ANY PED IN YOUR BODY THAT A BLOOD TEST WILL AND THEN SOME, AND DO IT WITH A HIGHER DEGREE OF ACCURACY.

    3. See number 2 above. #2 needs to be repeated because it is such a strong point.

May’s insistance on blood tests had nothing to do with leveling the playing field. You think May cares about a level playing field? ok, go ask Marquez about that.

If you took a poll on which fighter would be more likely to cheat if he could get away with it, May or Pac, what do you think that poll would show? Exactly.

  • uniquefan says:

They also have a new high tech urine test that does everything that a blood test does and more. If that is true, then drop all this invasive blood testing nonsense and just go with the new high tech urine test. Now can everyone once and for all forget all this talk about needles and invasive blood tests and just go with the random unlimited high tech urine test and let’s get back to boxing again?

  • uniquefan says:

Great comment Mr. Sweet Science. Didn’t know that about Olympic Style testing before.

  • Kent Wayne says:

After the two fight their opponents, Manny will again proves that he’s a bigger draw than Mayweather and will have greater leverage in the negotiation table if they return. If Mayweather doesn’t fight Mosley, he’ll be branded a Ducking coward for the rest of his life and his legacy will be shot. Mayweather has no choice but to comply with Pacquiao.

  • Kent Wayne says:

WRONG WRONG WRONG! Mayweather made a big mistake in turning down the negotiation.

First of all! Roach said they agreed to 14 days in an interview, but Mayweather still refused.

Manny came out on top by refusing to comply with Mayweather’s ridiculous demands. Manny vs Clottey is a bigger hit than anyone Mayweather is willing to face. Tickets are almost sold out in a 50k seats areana!

Mayweather will be the bigger loser by walking away. Who’s Mayweather’s going to fight that’s bigger draw than Manny vs Clottey? Shane Mosley is a possibility. However, sources say that Mayweather is considering not fighting Mosley and just wait for Manny to finish with Clottey and then go back to the negotiating table because he’s afraid of losing to a potentially more dangerous opponent than Manny. Why fight a fight that’s more dangerous for less money.

  • Eddie says:

No mistake at all. Manyy would not be the wonderful person he is if he compromised what he believes in. He would be a lesser fighter if he did. manny is encouragement of good things.

  • tiger1223usa says:

sorry guys but fm had the last move .manny agreed to 30 days and after the fight for testing fm should of ecepted that even though the testing fm wanted is not required.its all about manny so fm let the fight go

  • mr.sweetsci says:

jim downer….the negotiations have already failed before mayweather gave that 14 days. pacquiao doesn’t need the $40 million but he may wants it. mayweather has more to loose by not making this fight. pacquiao knows that floyd’s demand is unnecessary or even unjustified. olympic random blood testing doesn’t exist in the olympic. they use urine analysis for doping. blood testing use for health screening only.

  • mr.sweetsci says:

nobrainer2010… you really think like a no brainer. how many times do i have to tell you that NOBODY is refusing a DRUG TEST. do you even know how to read? pacquiao agreed to unlimited/random urine analysis. floyd wants olympic style testing. olympic style testing use URINE ANALYSIS to check if athletes use PEDs. the olympics never used BLOOD TESTING to detect PEDs. they used it for health screening only. RANDOM BLOOD TESTING in the olympics never exist. but that’s what’s floyd wanted anyway.

  • mr.sweetsci says:

lex…..i think you need to go back the day after cotto/clottey fight and you’ll find out what i’m talking about. again pacquiao didn’t duck mosely. mosely is just desperate to fight pacquiao. i don’t know if you can remember that even GBP announced that mosely/pacqiuao fight is already sealed and the following day pacquiao denied it. this happened when cotto/pacquiao negotiation is under way.

  • Mr.Cool says:

If Pacman is dirty and gets caught, he will not only be dishonored by the boxing world and committee, but by his legions of fans from his country for bringing shame. However, “Innocent till proven guilty” is still the reason why America is a wonderful country and the reason why I stand by Pacquiao and his Pound for Pound title.

I am bored with Mayweather and his desperate need for attention. He and his family are very shameful and very dishonorable. The reason why people love the Pacman and why Nike among other companies endorse him and shower him with fortune is because he is a gentleman. He pleases the masses and brings hope and joy to his Countrymen. That is a truly sellable commodity. How do you sell Mayweather other than “the guy everyone wants to beat”. True he has outstanding skills as a boxer. He is smart in the ring and lures his opponents into traps like a great hunter. However, the style, though effective, is not so fun to watch. Especially knowing that he should be challenging tougher opponents. But Pacquiao challenges larger, tougher opponents, Throws, throws, throws, gets hit every once in a while, dominates, and then defeats them, and then stays humble. He doesn’t claim to be the best. He says all his accomplishments came from God. The humility and humbleness is truly endearing and THAT my friend is the selling factor.

Truthfully, I would like Shane Mosley to take on Pacquiao. Mosley is a gentleman. Aggressive, a veteran fighter, and quick. I think this would be more sellable than Mayweather. Especially IF he succeeds in defeating Mayweather. But even I know that would be a BIG “if”. So good luck to all boxing fans and let’s pray we all get what we want. No matter if you are a fan of Pacquiao or a fan of Mayweather!

And Cotto beat Mosley before Cotto took a beating with plaster-of-paris. Anyone who thinks cotto was the same fighter before and after Cotto obviously didn’t watch him fight before and after. Speed, reflexes, stamina, and his chin were clearly not the same. No one had Cotto ranked higher than Mosley when Manny fought Cotto.

  • run like floyd says:

  • lex_fugitive says:

Mosley offered to figth Manny at 143 and give him a 60/40 purse split BEFORE NEGOTATIONS WITH COTTO EVER STARTED! Manny and company ran and ducked him. Plain and simple. Once again Pacfans make up lies to support their idol. And targeting someone who has difficulty making 147, has well known stamina problems and hasn’t fought or trained in 10 months while only giving him a month and a half to get ready. While Manny has remained active. If anyone doesn’t see the obvious advantage that gives Manny, then they don’t know anything about boxing. Why did the fight have to be so soon?? Manny and Top Rank knew what they were doing when they refused to even consider fighting Mosley, when they walked away from Floyd and they definitely knew what they were doing when they signed Clottey with such short notice. Manny is a -450 favorite for a reason.
Mr.sweetsci, I have simply stated facts. If you think they do Manny injustice, I’m sorry, but I can’t change facts. I’ve stated numerous times Manny is a great fighter, he is. And yes, Mosley was signed to fight Berto, and Mayweather initiated talks with Mosley while he was still under contract for Berto. Manny rushed to sign an easy opponent.

  • mr.sweetsci says:

hey lex….i thought we already talked about mosely and cotto last time. i wish manny could fight mosely and cotto at the same time. when clottey and cotto fought, manny was there. and after the fight manny told arum that he wants to fight cotto. at that time cotto already in manny’s mind. when there was a dispute over the weight then here comes mosely offering 143 lbs and 60/40 split.

  • mr.sweetsci says:

  • Dey says:

“Did Pacquiao make a mistake by not fighting Mayweather?”

NO… Because Pacquiao’s legacy is already cemented in the History Books as an All-Time great. He will always be known for his Historical Achievements. Division titles and his victories against multiple Hall-of-famers (Barrera, Morales, Marquez, DLH, Hatton?, Cotto). As of yet, there has been ZERO evidence of PED use (Right?).

“Did MAYWEATHER make a mistake by not fighting Pacquiao?”

YES… Mayweather will go in History as an undefeted defensive master who didn’t challenge the best. With merely only having 40 fights (as of now) is another contributing factor for his undefeated records. Mayweather landed (maybe) the Mosley fight because of Berto and so he is cornered to make that fight, not because he wants to.

Pacquiao does NOT need Mayweather. Mayweather does need Pacquiao.

  • Josh says:

Pac is fantastic, classy and cheerful happy fighter. Floyd,… just plain misserable. Pac doesn’t need floyd to make his fight boring as it would draw negativity and stain Pac’s well apreciated identity as an exciting and phenomenal boxer.

I think floyd is the one that made mistake here, and there’s tons of it.
He exposed himself thinking and hoping people are stupid enough to be clowned by some crackhead father that is a true covicted drug dealer of some sort.

KFC is the moron in throwing away $40M by not taking a beating from the Pacman. Now he takes the same beating from Mosley for less $$$, haha

  • agcool says:

Mosley was juicing and claimed he did
not know it when he fought De la hoya and using other enhancements. So Pac is exempt from doing anything. Pac is a great fighter but to take another fight instead of going through with the random testing come on now. But the fight will happen late summer. Why is pac even talking about fighting mayweather late summer?

  • agcool says:

Pac is now talking about fighting mayweather after clottey he stated the fight will happen. PAc said he agreeded to the 14 days random blood testing before the fight. Which is bull Pac window was 24 days before the fight. Now that he fighting clottey he stating that he agreed to the 14 days before the fight for mayweather but they turned it down. Pac stating the fight will happen late summer. Whats going to be the difference then and now? PAc must want to make sure he is clean.

  • lex_fugitive says:

Seems like Pacfans are getting upset since Manny is being exposed as scared of the best and possibly a cheat. Floyd’s fighting the best. Manny made 7 demands, wouldn’t negotiate at all and signed a fight with Clottey while GBP and Floyd were still trying to get a fight. Pacfans, you should be angry at your idol Manny. Mayweather gave him a chance and Manny didn’t want it. Mosley gave him a chance and called out Manny over the summer and Manny ran away. The winner of Mayweather-Mosley will go on and fight another top opponent, while Manny beats someone the public has never heard of. Probably in Texas where he doesn’t have to take any drug tests.

  • bboj says:

This fight is dangerous for Pac. Clottey is now free to eat whatever he wants and improve his stamina.

  • gard says:

    @El boxer

He had an opportunity to hurt one,Why he made the negotiation harder than necessary? He don’t like ‘coz he’s scared?

  • gard says:

I agree with you boxeeeeer, JUST FIGHT!

  • Boxerrrrr says:

MMA fighers just follow rules and regulations.
They just worry about fighting and keep fans happy.

PAC and all other great fighters have done the same.

    Just Fight!!!!!!PERIOD

  • Roger says:

Nobody made a mistake. Mayweather is not ready to fight that soon. Why else is he not fighting Mosley earlier than May 1? Pacquiao can not continue negotiating because the March 13 is getting too close. Right now, for example, he has only 7 weeks to train for Clottey instead of the 8 weeks he had for Cotto. He can not have a fight later than March 13 because the Philippine congressional election campaign season starts March 20. Mayweather and Pacquiao will get together when they have more time to train.

  • Jimmy Wright says:

No. Manny Pacquiao did the right thing. We think Mayweather is not ready yet to fight Pacquiao because of fear. It was a waste of time in fact. Let’s give more time for Floyd to take hold of himself and get the courage he need to go into a 50-50 fight.

  • lex_fugitive says:

    bernie;
Is that really the best excuse you can make for your idol? I have given blood numerous times without signing anything. i mean, a friend that didn’t finish high school is a phlebatomist at my local hospital. Its really not that hard to take blood safely. If you don’t even need a high school diploma to take blood, then its not that hard. How the heck do you get injured giving blood?!? You are truly showing your ignorance bernie.

  • Inubasan says:

against with Mr. Maylocaine Weather. Manny will agree random blood test if:
    1. Fight will be in Dallas
    2. 6 oz gloves
    3. 144 catch weight
    4. 60-40 split
no more, no less (walang tawad)

  • lex_fugitive says:

Pacfans have to lie to back up their fighter. The commission says the testing is a matter or private negotation. And Manny insisted on his own rules, that no other fighter ever has. So Manny has to have his rules that have never been in any fight and thats fine and normal but when Floyd wants testing to ensure PEDs aren’t being used thats trying to be the commission? Even the commission doesn’t see it that way. If you have to lie to try and make it sound like floyd’s fault and not Manny’s that tells who’s fault it is.

  • bErNiE vEe says:

Steroids use should be treated as a crime. Period!
But, the debate about how to implement a safe and foolproof way should be started, now, by scientists and doctors, and not just by some paranoid individuals. Also, a clause should be included in every fight contract that in the event NSAC screws up the procedure and hurt a fighter’s health, that a form of compensation be awarded the fighter, or the fighter be given the time and opportunity to heal and his health reinstated back to where before the incident happened.

Complicated, right? Yes, it is. That is why, a measure should be debated before being passed into law, before it can be adopted by boxing’s governing body.

This is why Mayweather’s blood testing idea is exposed as a charade because it lacks the details especially where USADA takes full responsibility for a fighter’s well-being in the course of implementing a measure that claims to protect atheletes’ well-being.

Who will protect fighters from WADA’s incompetence?

The question is, if the fight is governed by NSAC and blood testing is done by a third party, the USADA, then, who is going to be held accountable once USADA nurse representative miss the vein and have to do another intrusion, miss the vein again, and have to do another intrusion, leaving the fighter with a sore arm affecting his performance?

Worse, what if the nurse hits a nerve? And that’s not to mention, how could they ensure a sterile place to draw the blood. How do you isolate a locker room of contaminants and other infectious hazards?

If the nurse screws up, will NSAC be be held accountable for USADA’s incompetence? And, what are the ramnifications if ever such errors occur that will result in a fighter’s injury and eventual defeat? Floyd Mayweather Jnr? The author of this blood testing measure?

See, that is why NSAC refuses to adopt such measures because it just doesn’t work with boxers!

That is why Floyd’s blood testing scheme is stupid and absurd!

  • fenhyip says:

Floyd is a proven user XYlocane, and weight cheater.

  • Jax says:

Floyd sticked with the blood test. Pac dropped Flo for Clottey. GBP cooked up Mosley for Flo. Everyone happy. That’s it! … so move on people. The story is how will the fights turn out to be.

  • lex_fugitive says:

No, Pacquiao didn’t make a mistake. He knew what he was doing, he never wanted to fight Floyd. Now he can dominate an under-trained out of shape fighter that the public has never heard of.
And people saying Floyd is trying to act like the commission are making up lies to support Manny, because the facts make him look like a coward. First, the commission says the testing is a matter of private negotation and Mayweather has a right to ask for it. Second, the commission also has rules in place if someone comes in overweight and Manny had to make new ones. But all of that isn’t inventing new rules or acting like the commission, no, its called negotating a contract. Something Arum and Manny obviously weren’t interested in doing. Floyd agreed to 6 of the 7 demands by Manny. The only thing he requested was a few blood tests. manny signed a contract to fight clottey before people even realized he quit negotating. Floyd and GBP were still trying to make the fight happen, while Manny was having Clottey sign to fight before Clottey has time to get in shape or train properly. The winner of Mayweather-Mosley will offer Manny a fight, and Manny can take it or fight more people the public has never heard of.

  • Boxerrrrr says:

If the commission requires blood test then he will take it but for now it’s not.

I’m sure PAC will take as many blood test as long as commission says so.

PAC follow rule and regulation to get level playing field.
PBF wants PAC to tie one hand to get level playing field.

  • Gerboi says:

You guys don’t get it. There’s really no problem with blood testing for Pacman. The real problem is Floyd Mayweather dictating him to take it. He is not the commission. That’s not his job. Why would Pacman or anyone boxer subject themselves to something that is not demanded by the commission. I say, Mayweather is a moron who is trained and promoted by morons.

  • 1984 Silver Medalist says:

Later this year Random Blood Testing will be the norm. Will it then be OK for Manny?

Were all of the excuses a joke?

If blood testing is then OK when it is a mandate by the boxing commission, then why did he pull out of the first fight?

    So many questions…so few answers…

  • Inubasan says:

Manny agreed blood drawn after the fight. That is almost like a bottle of soda shakin so much and pop a needle on the body. You will see squirt of blood like a fountain and Manny agrees with that. But what the people wanted is what he dont like, blood drawn before the fight, that weakens him. Albeit, there is no answer for this and Manny will never cave-in.

  • futch says:

no . mayweather fell for pacquiao’s trap ..

  • 1984 Silver Medalist says:

Boxerrrr I don’t care if you’re Asian, Mexican, Black or Mudduck. Quit blaming everyone else and making excuses for not facing a particular fighter. Pacquiao has 3 fights for his legacy. Mayweather, Mosely, and Williams. Mayweather has the same.

Unfortunately, they happen to be African American fighters. Exactly the ones Roach doesn’t like to face…

    Nooo…Clottey is not African American!

  • bolo says:

it has nothin to do with him bein asian. its just his stance makes no sence. his reasons dont add up. im afraid of needles but have 40 tatoos. superstitious. dont do test durin trainin. but hbo show you doin test 24 days b4 hatton match. nevada rules ok . then why did you ask for 10 mill per pound clause if mayweather is over contract pound condition. nevada has rules for that as well. look at espn kennedy pacman interview on espn or youtube. that should be put on for comments.

  • jay says:

i dont understand why manny doesnt want to test. Screw the needle if i was manny, i would wipe floyds’ ass for free just to shut his big mouth. Manny if you are who you say you are, you would take the drug test, cash, and Floyds’ pride in front of every1 unless you have something to hide. See you know what makes this interesting, remembering iverson had a proble with a little thing called “pratice” it almost cost him his legancy in philadelphia. See Manny this is almost the same thing a “drug test” is stopping you from being the true king of the ring. See little does manny know it but people think you turned the fight away because of a test not because you didnt want to, not because you thought you were a better fighter but a drug test. See me if this me negotiating to fight floyd, i would climb a mountain to dig in his ass and getting paid for it would be a bonus.

  • Inubasan says:

Money is not everything it’s how you do your job and your offering in return.

Floyd just makes excuses. He came in over the weight against Marquez. Let’s see if he has the nerve to come in the ring against Shane Mosley.

  • perko says:

pacs legacy is severely damaged for all time , why would any top sportsman destroy his reputation for the sake of not wanting to do 3 random blood tests – go figure.

  • 1984 Silver Medalist says:

That’s exactly what is going to happen. Randon blood testing will be adopted within 6 months. So Manny will have NO CHOICE.

What happens to what he said that he gets dizzy from giving blood? It will now be mandated that he will probably be giving blood the day of every fight he has going forward after the Clottey fight. Then we will all know that this was a bunch of BULL!!!

Everyone will have to give blood 6 months from now.

    ITS ABOUT TIME!!!!

  • BNME says:

Oh yeah! He made an huge mistake now, he misses a huge payday and a part of boxing history. Just because Mayweather is undefeated doesn’t make the best that 0 could go in any fight. • Joe says:

Floyd is a fighter, not the commission. If he would just up and fight, I would respect him more. End of discussion.

  • fly ty says:

Unfortunately, Floyd succeeded at creating guilt thru presumption. Steroids can easily be detected with the requirements Pacquiao had agreed to. HGH cannot. Yet the usada has not detected HGH in olympic athletes with the methods currently implemented either. In terms of money, neither really loses because anyone still wants to fight either of them to achieve the best payday. Hopefully, the long term will help all fighters to clean up the division and we’ll finally get the best fight possible.

  • Ray says:

I wonder what Pacquiao fans will say when Neveda starts requiring blood test along with urine…go head and keep calling out the commission and see what happens later this year…

  • gard says:

Are you saying the mistake is because of the 14 or 24 days cutoff?

24days or 14days there is no difference. If the test is for
drug use while training. You don’t just train for 3 weeks for a fight of that magnitude,Don’t you?

Fighters are trying to get a psychological edge, apparently
on this, its hard to tell who did the bullying.Who really
gain an edge after the failed negotiations?

  • Inubasan says:

No, Pacquiao did the right thing. There are times that things you like you don’t want to get and that one is a good example. Manny knew that he wont be able to give a good fight when blood is drawn from him closer to his fight. He knows his body and he knew what he can. By agreeing those demand is almost giving everything he’s got. It almost saying… merry christmas to you Mr. Maylocaine Weather… here is the belt, here’s the money and here’s the P4P title. And Mr. Maylocaine boy will say… Thank you for your kindness. the end.

  • Joe says:

The Pac camp said they agree by the rules of teh commision. If the commision said blood testing on the day of the fight, Pac camp is ok with it. I applaud them by standing up to the bs from the Mayweather camp. Floyd is not above the commision rules. In terms of PPV, Floyd can’t carry the fight by himself. It was his opponents that generated the PPV numbers, not him.

  • 1984 Silver Medalist says:

How the fighters (Mayweather and Pacquiao) perform in their next outing will determine their negotiation value.

Pacquiao must destroy Clottey, and CANNOT take a knockdown.

    Mayweather must embarrass Mosely.

Should anything less occur, both will be hurt.

  • BoneCrusher says:

On the positive side, it’s a good thing that the negotiation didn’t come to fruition and Floyd is backed into the corner and left with no option but to fight a fighter his own size in the Welter Weight division. Also, Pacman is being promoted by both Top Rank and Golden Boy and thanks to Floyd Sr that GBP is included in the defamation lawsuit, GBP will no longer get any percentages from Pacman’s future fights.

  • 1984 Silver Medalist says:

Everyone knows the testing currently done is nonexistent. It is time for boxing to move to the forefront.

Regardless, the change will happen. There is talk it will be adopted within 6 months. This will now be the rule.

So they can negotiate everything else, and give blood at random as will be mandated.

  • Joe says:

Floyd’s shenanegan cost him a big pay day. Now he has to fight a more dangerous fighter, in my humble opinion, in Mosley. Floyd needs Pacquiao more than Pacquiao needs him. Pacquiao legacy is set as the best and he as fought the best in the business and was calling Floyd out. Floyd will come down in history as a good fighter, but not great because of dodging great fighters. That’s not good.

  • iceman says:

    unico,

i’ve heard it all now, “pac is boring”!

    wtf is floyd then?!

pacquiao”s got that tysoneffect on the boxing or should i say sporting public. that real shock effect and i think the clottey bout will do close to 500,000. maybe not bang on but it’ll be close.

remember, lik him or not pac is a global superstar. he was the most hit person on google in 2009 beating the likes of woods federer etc…

to compare floyds ppv value to mannys is just a joke!

manny is the ppv king! if it were pac mosley it would sell more than mosley floyd! just lik pac clottey would do better than floyd clottey!.

pacquiao’s just got the IT factor, fullstop.

mayweather is a huge draw to but he relies on his opposition far more than pac.

we will let the numbers do the talking though. and compare a superfight mosley/floyd (if it happens) to a “stock fight” lik pac clottey.

pacquiao can carry a ppv by himself, floyd cant!

  • John Higgins says:

No, it wasn’t a mistake. It’s like asking, was it a mistake for Mayweather for not making the fight happen? And no, Mayweather is not better than Pacquiao. See what I’m getting at? You have your opinion, I have my opinion. And your opinion is not any better than mine.

  • Jmagik says:

It looks like Mayweather is trying to save face by instilling his own random blood test rule moving forward.

In any negotiation process, each party will have an extreme offer but will usually settle down the middle.

Gloves – Floyd offers 10 oz gloves – meets down the middle and settles for 8 oz

Weight – Floyd offers 154 lbs – meets down the middle and settles for 147 lbs

USADA testing – Floyd offers random blood tests up until the day of the fight – but can’t settle for 3 weeks?

From the looks of it Manny and Top Rank tried to negotiate that portion to the point where enough was enough.

We all know that 154 is not where both fighters want to fight and Floyd can easily fight with 8oz gloves. But trying to enforce blood testing rules outside of the NSAC is ridiculous.

  • Joe says:

If Floyd just play by the rules of the commission which has been good for all fighters including Floyd, we wouldn’t be talking about this right now. He wanted to change the rules, and in the process removing himself from the fight with Pacquiao. I wouldn’t blame Kentucky Floyd Chicken from being scared of the best pound for pound king Pacquiao. Pacquiao made the right decision telling Floyd to take a hike.

  • 1984 Silver Medalist says:

@Sugarcaine, who do you think will sell more…

Pacquiao vs. Clottey, or Mayweather vs. Mosely?

Pacquiao hurt himself in the future negotiations!!!!

  • 1984 Silver Medalist says:

The mistake that was made was that when negotiations begin in the future, the drug testing will probably be adopted by the Nevada boxing commission and blood will be mandated this time as part of the testing. Mayweather vs. Mosely will bring the spotlight to comprehensive testing in boxing. ALL of boxing will follow their lead and adopt blood and urine testing. All of the initial holdout will be all for naught.

All in all, Pacquiao will have to submit to the blood testing in order for the fight with Mayweather to commence.
If he had continued negotiations, I agree it could have stopped at 3 weeks prior to the fight. Now, I predict all major fights will be tested even up to the day of the fight!

The argument made by the writer is flawed. His thinking is very one sided. It is just as easy to say – “didn’t Mayweather just walked away from the $25-$40M by initiating rules that hasn’t been there ever?”. He could have dropped it if he doesn’t want to run away from that kind of money. As I see it, Pacquiao is better off financially than Mayweather at the moment given the latter’s recent financial woes.

  • Dave says:

Anybody notice how emotional and non-sensible Pac’s fans are? Like they can’t understand a simple concept that Floyd doesn’t want to fight someone roided up. He thinks Pac cheats and gets away with it. So he tried to stop that by asking for more testing, and Pac got all bent out of shape and called off the negotiations.

I’m not saying Pac cheats. I’ve only seen him fight once and just found out he existed a couple years ago. But I do know if I was about competing against someone in combat, I would want to know for sure they weren’t cheating.

If I were Pacquiao, why would I follow and be subjected a regulation from a fighter (who is not even the current champion) that is not part of the commission’s regulation and no boxer has ever been subjected to in history? You know, there are things more important than $40 million — like pride, honor and dignity. I guess for Americans, it’s all about $$$$. This is their GOD which is the truth, whether they like it or not. Their country is founded on the pursuit of the mighty dollar.

  • Clint says:

Jim Dower, you are a one-dimensional writer and a moron. It’s the other way around. SO WHO IS ACTUALLY WALKING AWAY FROM THE $40 MILLION, PACQUIAO OR MAYWEATHER? Who was the one who demanded a regulation that is not part of boxing?

Next time you write, analyze..their are infinite ways to look at a situation. You have a one-track mind.

HEE KNOW IS GAME OVER FOR FLOY

  • Vince says:

He already paid the 6 million after the Marquez fight. But no fighter should walk away for a fight worth 25-45 million, which is what manny did.

    Also…

Just because Mayweather has an ’0′ does not make him the best. Not by a long shot. His record and his opponents are not a patch on Pacquiaos. I love both these guys, i really do but Pacquiao for me is the clear P4P best at this time.

  • jamie says:

It will happen later this year and we will all be more grateful for it
    http://www.boxing-articles.com

  • milosands says:

Look, it wasn’t Pacquiao backing out of the fight. Mayweather tried to introduce his own rules, rules that Pacquiao had never, in his 55 fights, heard of before. So why should he change his routine to suit Mayweather who had never before asked for these blood tests in his 40 fights??????

Pacquiao has not lost out because he is still the P4P No.1 fighter in the world. The only loser here is Mayweather.

A fight of this magnitude could not be “milked” for all its worth in 2 months therefore it has been delayed to promote it further. It will happen in about november 2010 as long as nothing happens to either boxer. Its a delaying tactic in my opinion and thats all it is.

  • Paul says:

    I agree.
