By Joel Roberts: With the major lack of exciting fighters in the heavyweight division, it is somewhat of a surprise that the return of David Tua hasn’t been more widely spoken about. As much as he is the current “Buzz” of the nation down here in little old New Zealand, I think it is well overdue to give David the worldwide recognition he deserves.
It is true that Tua had his Hiccups, But what fighter back then didn’t? He still has never been put on his backside and I would go as far to say that no one will ever succeed in doing so. He has un-equalled power and a chin that even the mighty Klitschko’s would be lucky to have hit the canvas. Do we really think that David Haye will give us what we want from the H/weights? Put him in the ring With Tua then and let’s see what happens. Haye belongs on a running track not in a boxing ring. The only person that would of run around that ring more against Valuev would be Usain Bolt! If Tua had been given the same opportunity against Valuev, I can guarantee he would stand Toe to Toe with the Big Man and do his best to put Valuev on his back!
It is undeniable that Tua is the heavyweight to be feared. Without him the division looks to have a pretty Dismal future. Lets put him in the Ring with the current champions so we can get a glimpse of the action we have all missed so much!

i don’t know what the author is remembering, or if he even followed boxing back then, but i don’t remember that era as being great for the heavyweights. you had the same complaints back then as you do now, boring champions, not as good as past eras, etc etc, ad nauseam.

I watched the Tua/Cameron fight recently and was surprised at Tua’s overall progress since I saw him last. He appeared much slimmer, much faster, much more aggressive, and, most importantly, just as powerful as he’s ever been. Can he be competitive amongst today’s heavyweights? Absolutely!

Tua is too short, slow, and doesn’t have the head movement or the explosivness of Iron Mike Tyson. He also doesn’t give slick angles like a James Lights Out Toney….
Haye is too fast, quick and has good pop on his punches. The fight would only go 5-8 rounds in Haye’s favor.

You are right about 1 thing. If Tua fights David Haye the fight will only go 3-4 rounds. That is all the time that Haye will need to do away with that lazy bum Tua. Haye is too fast, too hungry, and too good for Tua. Tua is done and ain’t got it no more.
That’s right no one in the division can take the Klits brothers now and as for Haye he’s running scared hoping the Klits will retire soon. Tua is a lot different now, matured and has learnt a lot from his past experience. Everyone here is saying Haye has speed PLEASE put him in with TUA and we’ll see he wont last 3-4 rounds TKO.

tua was good against some competition. He would ko haye, but the K bro’s would easily decision him. There are some good fights out there.
David Haye would have knocked Valuev out if he had not broken his hand within the first 5 minutes of the fight. He ended up winning, just goes to show how good he is.
To me at least…Haye is the most exciting fighter when he isn’t fighting with a broken hand.
It frustrates me when people say Tua had his chance with lewis and that he was out of his depth and couldnt handle the height difference. Well the reality is Tua should have postponed the fight with Lewis as he went in with a rib injury, and although it wasnt made public the lewis camp knew about it and targeted it. In the second round Lewis hit him square in the injured area and that was effectively the end of the fight. We then had to endure 10 rounds of a lack lustre Tua looking like half the fighter he is. If Tua was fully fit i think he could have caught Lewis on the chin and taking him down. Im not making excuses for Tua, and to his credit he never used this as an excuse for the loss.
Now that Tua has lost some weight, is more mobile, has matured as a boxer and has better management i think we will see one hell of a good fighter work his way up the rankings. I just hope the title holders have the balls to face a tough opponent like Tua instead of taking easy fights.

I think if anybody is David Haye is, im not fully convinced hes capable but hope he is.
Thing is it needs more than one, weve got the Klitchkos dominating a painfully boring and out of shape division and if Haye beat them then hed just be the force in a painfully boring and out of shape division.
Not saying either Haye or the Klitchkos are fat unfit bums but most the guys at heavyweight are.

after the 2003 fight with rahman 2 (a draw) tua has been in a out of court taking his manager kevin barry and agent martin pugh. its been a lenghty battle that was only completed mid last year!
david tua has been robbed of his best years 6 or 7 in total with only saratic comebacks each time during the lay off.
he wa a famed amatuer boxer caturing bronze at the olympics and had close to 50 pro fights with a ko rate above the ninties (i think, or close to it).
his only loses have been to lewis, chris byrd and ike ibeabuchi (many feel ike was destined for the title, or one of some sort but the guy got locked up for rape and assulting a cop).
tua beats former and future champs and was also destined for a title (just look at the muppets that have).
hes never been hurt let alone being knocked down let alone being stoped! (rahman caught tua at the end of there 2nd fight after the bell when tua was pulling away a slipped over, this wasnt called a knocked down and nor it shouldnt of. tua was laughing as he got up).
hes beaten the like of michael moorer, first round ko. rahman, 10 round ko (this was when rahman was undfeated).john ruiz in 20 seconds, many though ruiz was dead! darrel wilson and david izon, both stoppages and both top ranked contenders.olleg maskev tko and a host of other top rated or quality heaveyweights.
just recently he stopped shane cameron, no 6 by wbo by second round ko and was one of the most brutal i’ve ever seen in his latest comeback.
i agree with most here that his height is a problem and if bigger fighters like lewis etc… go the distance tuas not going to get the decision. but tua knows this thats why he trys to finish it quick ala mike tyson. he hits hardedr than mike and has a better chin than holyfield, but just doesnt have the movement.
however how refreshing is it that a heaveyweight actually wants to flatten his opponents! not like the muppets we have now!

Tua has got to be one of the worst heavy weights of all time. He was nothing back in the day never mind now.
for a start i can tell your just an armchair fan who doesn’t appreciate good boxing. for Christ sake haye broke his hand in the 2nd round what else could he have done. if he traded with him that would be stupid he showed pure boxing skill and movement. i’m not saying it was exciting fight but haye showed a side that we thought wasn’t their. on the other hand you know what your getting with tua a man who is short and wants to land his big left hook. i think tua is an exciting fighter if you let him be. tua would get outclassed by the Klitschkos and haye. if haye mixes his far Superior boxing skills with his speed and punching power i don’t see tua winning a round.
how old is tua? If he was from that era that the writer is talking about he might just have 1 fight left in him. Then again 35 yrs old is when a heavyweight peaks now a days.

The heavyweight division is dead for us americans cuz all our heavyweights are bums right now. We need atleast 3 star heavyweights to revive that division..not a new zealander. Other than that, the heavyweight division is alive and well for europeans.

….. John Ruiz is now a former two-time WBA World Heavyweight champion and even has another title shot against the very beatable David Haye. When Ruiz fought Tua he was almost put in a coma!
If only that Kiwi has bothered to fight he would have surely cleaned up a terrible division by now!

i cant believe your slagging off haye,haye broke his hand in the 2nd round and had to adopt they type of tactics,but after seing haye wobble valuev in that last round he has the power to ko any heavyweight,because in my opinion valuev has the best chin in boxing just because of his sheer size.i like tua beacause he always goes for the ko,but i think haye is to athletic for tua and would ware tue down before taking him out around the 9th or 10th.
Personally, I would like to see Tua fight and move into the heavyweight picture. Whoever said Haye would KO Tua is delusional. Tua has a great chin! I agree that Tua vs. the K’s would possibly be a repeat of Lewis. I would give him more of a shot to defeat Wladimir than Vitali. I would like to see him vs. Haye; I bet Tua would’ve KO’d Valuev.
Haye is too slick and too quick and intelligent. He will destroy Ruiz in 6 rounds. The real ‘explosive’ Haye will be back next fight.
In my opinion if Tua ever faces David Haye then Haye wins by dramatic KO around the 4th. Tua may not have been put down as a pro but he has not fought anyone with the power of Haye and that includes Lennox Lewis. Lewis did what he had to do but was always known for his safety first approach. If he would have opened up against him then Tua would have been sparked out!! Haye would be too quick and would hit way too hard and too often for Tua to handle!

Tua will knock out all the current champions! Hey Steven, Tua may have been knocked out once all twice in his amuateur career but never in his professional career. I havent even seen him knocked to the ground yet….he’s got that raw power that strikes fear into his opponents.

He is exciting but he has lost to some average opponents. He hasn’t beaten any top fighters only distinctly ‘average’ champions like Ruiz and Rahman.He has also been knocked out. It was in an olympic fight against Felix Savon. He is far from the saviour of heavyweight boxing.
The others said it well, exciting but no match for the K brothers… And like almost everybody here I’d like to see him up against David ‘I knock the Klits out, I knock Valuev out, h*ll I knock everybody out!’ Haye and shut him up.
I’m glad he’s back, only I’m afraid he will end up against one of the K’s and end up on the wrong side of a lopsided decision, because with David’s ‘activity’ whe are 2 years further before he handeled his mandatories.

Tua would only be standing toe-to-toe with Valuev because that would be all he could do, he has no other style. Therefore he would prob get beat as he would if he fought the Klits.
Your dismissing the speed of David Haye (as so many are). Tua will never have faced anyone so fast and would take many clean heavy shots. Not saying Haye would definitely win but he probably would.

Lex is right about Klits vs Tua, it’d be a repeat of Lewis-Tua bore-out fight. Tua needs to fight smaller guys and he really is super entertaining guy. Tua-Arreola, Tua-Chambers, Tua-Povertkin would be excellent maches. But most of all I can’t wait to see Tua vs. Haye, I wonder can Haye run like with Valuev against massive puncher like Tua and unlike against Lewis who was way too tall for him to mow down, I think Tua can reach the chin of rather smallish “Haye the Overhyped cruiserman” very easily 
. This would very probably end with an ultraeffective KO Haye being power-punched over the canvas and on referee’s table needing immediate medical evacuation imho.
Tua can fight anyone but the Klitschko’s. He has power yes, but he doesn’t have the head and shoulder movement and fluid combinations like Frazier and Tyson had. Therefor he cannot get close to either Klitschko. It would be a repeat of his 12-0 loss to Lewis. And I don’t see that as a great heavyweight era. It was almost identical to today except is was Lewis at the top fighting the same way as Klitschko. Tyson sucked, so did holyfield and he was even on roids, Tua got dimantled and Rahman had one lucky punch. Actually, that was the beginning of the end of the heavyweight division.
