Clottey: “I promise that I will dethrone him” [Pacquiao]

By Sean McDaniel: Former IBF welterweight champion Joshua Clottey is confident that he has what it takes to beat World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao in their fight on March 13th, at the Dallas Cowboy stadium, in Arlington, Texas. In an article at Ghanaweb, Clottey, 32, said “I know its Pacquiao, but I don’t want people thinking that Manny is super, that nobody can beat him. He is a human being like me. He has lost three times and I have also lost three times. We speak, laugh and share jokes together. I promise that I will dethrone him” [Pacquiao].

Clottey doesn’t seem bothered by all the people who are giving him almost zero chance to beat Pacquiao. Clottey has been in against some tough world class opponents during his career, in fights against Miguel Cotto, Zab Judah, Diego Corrales and Antonio Margarito. One problem that Clottey has is that he’s only had mixed results when stepping it.

Clottey has lost to Cotto, Margarito and Carlos Baldomir during his career. There’s no shame in losing to good fighters like them, but Clottey doesn’t have a lot of other wins against notable opponents to make up for his losses against some of the best opponents he’s faced.

In the fights that Clottey has lost, he’s generally fought very well during patches of the fight. However, in almost every case, Clottey has seemed to run out of gas and have his work rate suffer as the rounds progressed late into the fight. Even in some of the fights that Clottey has won, he’s faded late and turned fights that should have been a lopsided win or knockout into a fight that turned to be much closer than it should have.

Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, will likely have Pacquiao following a fight plan which involves Pacquiao using quick in and out attacks to avoid getting hit by Clottey. Roach won’t want Pacquiao to stand in front of Clottey and try to slug with him because of Clottey’s bigger size, good hand speed and strong chin.

Clottey isn’t the type of fighter that can easily be knocked out. This is why their March 13th fight could turn out to be a very boring fight with Pacquiao winning it by hitting and running. Roach says that Clottey will make for an exciting fight for fans, but it could turn out completely opposite of that with Pacquiao fighting on the move for 12 rounds.

Good one wait a minute.Manny would never beat Floyd get a boxed all over the show,as for Shane is a serious banger and would take him out.
As for Shane and Floyd a tricky one.Meanwhile Manny sits back waits for the 40 big ones. What if Clottey upsets the plan.Could be a good year for boxing.

Pac has very big advantages in hand and foot speed as well as power in both hands(when he plants his feet).

Does Pac have a better defense? A better right hand? Better counter punching ability, better combination(not flurries) punching?

Can Pac throw a quadruple left hook(to the body and head) with a right upper cut followed by a left uppercut? Can Pac throw three left upper cuts and then a right uppercut in succession? Watch Clottey’s fights.

Clottey has his own advantages: a tight defense, very varied combination punching, very good counter punching and a killer right hand.

I see Clottey as a ‘gate keeper’ He is good but not elite. He’s about #5 in the WW rankings, but in sports there’s a big difference between #5 & #1.

The only advantage he has, when you really come down to it, is size. Pac has the advantage in every other area.

I see Clottey posing a challenge, but not a threat. In other words if he has the greatest night of his life an upset could happen, it has in the past.

people calm down its called confidence..he shouldnt have confidence in himself…should he be like im going to put on a good show and lose to the great pacman? hes a fighter just like pac who wants to be the best and has the mind set they are the best and ready to prove it to anybody…do i think he going to win..personally no lol he has a shot dont get me wrong but i dont think he will win..but still you cant knock him for being confident in himself

  • rob says:

to wait a minute…if pac loses or may loses the 40mil is gone for both parties lol…both need to win or it will be a big payday for the winner of their fight but wont be enaar 40mil …so if i was may and pac i would be cheering for the other in their fight if they do want to fight eachtoehr for that much money

    QUESTION TO ALL:

What will happen if Mayweather loses to Mosley?
    How will that affect everything?
    Who will Pacquiao fight next?
Will it still be $40M each?
I’d like to pick everybody’s brain.

clotty sound no different from the others. It’s alway been like that, he will suffer the same faith as cotto.

    Shakeeb,

treat your obssession of Khan, nobody is interested to it.

Do you(Pacquiao supporters)think, JMM can beat clottey? If no is the answer, then think and reason properly. I’ve been reading your articles and it seems clottey’s hands will be tight around his body while Pac use him as punching bag, you guys are funny! Just think of the problems Jmm gave Pac in their previous fights, and i believe clottey is a better boxer than JMM so think and think again b’4 passing any judgement. If there is any knockout in the fight it is going to be in clottey’s favour, due to his size an durability, and he can win on points too. Zab judah is equally fast but clottey was ahead on points and won the fight. Don’t forget he was leading on points by the compubox only to be robbed by bribed judges. Someone pls answer me!!

Well well Shakeeb, i was thinking i’ve only ever seen your comments on a Khan article and then one springs up on a pacman v clottey article but low and behold it’s about Amir Khan. Well answer me this question: What does it taste like? Amirs bum that is! You’re a mug Shakeeb, Khan aint jack mate, good talent but no chin and afraid of a real fight. Grow up mate you’re not even a boxing fan you’re just a fan of anything asian and no im not a racist!

  • Mr Rich says:

    @ shakeeb NawaZ

what could Khan possibly teach Pacquiao? How to get KTFO in the 1st round maybe? maybe he could help Pacquiao learn how to breakdance after getting jabbed lol

im sure Pacquiao doesnt need any advice from Khan. If you are gonna make stupid coments at least do it on an article about Khan, this article has nothing to do with him.

amir kahn is a young cub pac man is big daddy lion
and is teaching amir the tricks of the trade.

Like in everything in life you must crawl before you walk and roach and pac will guide him to be a big lion

but come on shakeeb put the brakes on a little you make it out khans showing pac the tricks !!!

Clottey will lose a ud when he faces pac clottey is tough as old boots and tight defence but cant let his hands go to win big fights.

  • Matt Porter says:

“Amir Khans presence at the wild card gym has rubbed off on PAcman. Hes become a sublime fighter. Pacman destroys clottey in a couple rounds”.

Oh give me stength…………worst comment on this site ever. And there have been some corkers!

  • MbfromPhilly says:

You guys have all really, really underestimated Joshua’s boxing skills! He will hit Pacquaio with combination after combination! Manny does not have great boxing skill and he’s always open for a counterpunch after he punches! Joshua probably can’t win a decision, because Pacquaio is the financial savior for all the execs in Boxing and HBO, but there won’t be any doubt about which man wins the battle in the ring.

  • MbfromPhilly says:

I’ve watched Josh Clottey for years now and I will tell you “he is not a sweet victory for anyone!” Clottey does have three losses on his record but I’ve never seen him lose a fight! This will be a very tough fight for Pacquaio. Joshua’s punch output has dropped on the later rounds of fights because his opponent isn’t doing anything to threaten him. The aggresive, come forward fighters Clottey has faced have all been battered into retreat(Corales, Margarito-before the hand injury and Cotto were all clearly outclassed and overwhelmed once they got in the ring with Clottey. What other welterweights do u see trying to fight Joshua? None of them want to fight Clottey, and for good reason!

  • Sandy says:

How can you say khans presence has rubbed off on pacman! pacman was a great figher way before kahn got to the gym!

This article is about pacman and clottey keep it that way!

  • rob says:

why does shakeeb nawaz always mention khan are you his bf thi article is about clottey dumbo

  • z says:

Its nice that clottey is trying to hype up his fight but we all know he has an incredibly slim chance to actually win. I guess everyone has a punchers chance but that appears to be about all he has. There’s no way he outpoints manny and i think a victory in his eyes should be to avoid hitting the mat which i think he can do. The only 3 fighters that have even been somewhat legitimate that he’s foughten he’s lost too. Im sorry theres nothing on his resume that tells me he has any chance to beat the top p4p fighter right now.

  • josh1 says:

manny will go into roid rage halfway through the fight

  • ricanstruction says:

    All talk no action.

  • FightFan says:

If Pacquiao allowed himself to test Clottey’s power like he did Cotto’s, he may get really hurt. I think Clottey hits harder than Cotto. At fightnight he will weigh as much as a middleweight and he’ll be dangerous for Pacman

  • FanaBox says:

  • Oli says:

Anyone who writes clottey off in this is clearly burying their head in the sand. Unless clottey is the victim of an unfair stoppage or a disgraceful points judging then this is going to be life and death for pacquiao. Because i know clottey will be more of a nightmare than cotto was. Cotto i beleive had doubts before the pacquiao fight, clottey will have no fear.

Which you can only respect manny pacquiao for. He clearly only chooses the best opponants

  • Jan Cooke says:

If Clottey does run out of gas, I can see him covering up and Pacquiao letting loose on him. Knocking Clotty’s head from side to side. If Pacquiaos shots are accurate whilst this is happening, the ref will jump in to save Clottey. This is just my oppinion tho. You just never know.

  • grim says:

Wow, a promise?? Overconfident much? It’s one thing to promise a great fight but another thing to promise beating a seemingly unbeatable guy who has a style advantage over you.

  • prosopopia says:

It will be easy for Manny to score points against Clottey on that we can all agree, but more that this, I think Pacquiao will be too strong for Clottey on the night and could even, dare i say it, knock him out.
As with Mosley against the iron-chined Margarito the impossible can happen and Manny, out of all the top welterweights in the division, has the best chance to do it.
Speed kills, right? And when combined accuracy and formidable drive it becomes a lethal weapon.

  • ISka says:

hmmm…that’s what i like about clottey. he’s not overwhelmed by pacquiao’s status. roach will probably try a more defensive plan to counter clottey’s attack in order for him to gauge how manny has developed his defensive skills.
manny will probably in the inital rounds do what he did against cotto: test clottey’s power and go toe to toe. but later on he will switch to a more careful attack mode using his speed, going in and out.
clottey will definitely give it all knowing he’s got nothing to lose and more to gain even if he loses this fight.

  • Mikey says:

Nice article, i see pacquiao taking it imo. Roach is no sloucher and he knows exactly what he’s doing. But Clottey is dangerous, bigger, powerful and has a solid chin. This doesnt add up to an easy nights work for Manny. Clottey had his moments against Cotto, but he seemed to lose his will throughout as Cotto’s grew… Manny has a similar type of heart as Cotto. If Clottey can fight 100% for 100% of the fight he could be a very big handful. If not then it could as you say, be a very dull fight. It all depends on the plan Roach has put together.
