Clottey: “I have everything to beat him” [Pacquiao]

By Jason Kim: With few boxing fans giving him much of a chance to beat WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao on March 13th, former IBF welterweight champion Joshua Clottey remains confident that he has what it takes to beat Pacquiao. In article at Boxing Talk, Clottey says “I have a lot of things to beat Manny Pacquiao. I have my defense in there and I’m a strong welterweight. He’s [Pacquiao] fighting one of the best out there and I think I have enough to beat him.”

If Clottey wants to fulfill his dream of beating Pacquiao, he’s going to have to fight much better than he has in his last fight against Miguel Cotto, as well as his fights against Zab Judah, Diego Corrales, and Antonio Margarito. In each one of these fights, Clottey sparingly threw punches and fought for extended periods of time with his gloves glued to his face covering up and trying to block punches.

If Clottey fights like this against Pacquiao, you can expect it to be an easy night for Manny. Clottey has to find a way to be busy enough to win rounds, because it’s unlikely that he’s going to be able to knock Pacquiao out. It’s also pretty farfetched that Clottey has much of a chance to beat Pacquiao by a decision.

Pacquiao is the champion coming into this fight and the cash cow of boxing. It’s doubtful that judges will give Clottey the nod in the fight unless he gives Pacquiao a ferocious beating beyond the shadow a doubt. We saw in Pacquiao’s controversial 12 round split decision win over Juan Manuel Marquez in early 2008 that it’s not easy to beat Pacquiao by a decision.

It takes something really special like the performance put on by Erik Morales in his 12 round decision win over Pacquiao in 2005. Morales threw a ton of punches in every round and kept backing Pacquiao up and getting the better of him with hard combinations. Clottey may not have it in him to fight like this. His whole offense seems to be centered on him throwing a few punches and then covering up for prolonged periods of time.

That style won’t work against Pacquiao. Clottey needs to find some endurance somewhere in training camp and use that in his fight with Pacquiao. At 32, it’s doubtful that Clottey can be anything other than what he’s always been in the past.

Clottey doesn’t work enough and doesn’t have the speed, power or counter punching to even compete against manny. He is strong so he might stay in the ring for 12 rounds, but like most of his fights he will be covered up for most of the fight. Manny will win and look great, this is a perfect opponent for him.

  • the Professor says:

Clottey vs. Manny at no catchweight. So I hope Bob didn’t pay Clottey off to lose against Pacman to get a fight with Mayweather in the future.

  • mac 3c says:

brilliant.. that’s so true..clottey should give his %100 performance.. if he wants to beat manny,it should be like manny’s face is ripped..blood all over his face and swollen..

  • mayweather sr. says:

i think manny is using steroids.

  • Left Handed Boxing Fan says:

yeah they wouldnt let clottey win this on points it would have to be a KO

  • Papa Fugas says:

I am a Clottey fan however for him to win, he would have to increase his work rate massively. His work rate will have to be higher than manny’s for the judges to give him a chance. To increase his work rate will also mean opening himself up for manny’s devastating blows. This is a tough fight for JC but I believe in destiny and this maybe his time. JC remember where you come from and roar like a BUKOM LION. I have been shaterred on two occasions (Mto and cotto’s fight), let the 13th be the day I rejoice and I hope he doesn’t dissapoint his kid who will be watching the daddy at ring side for the first time.

I congratulate Manny for taking on all these tough fights. These days, unlike the Tyson and Azumah Nelsons era, boxers are just a bunch of wimps calling themselves champions and yet running away from real fights. Come on Floyd, don’t dissapoint ur fans

  • Josh says:

I see Pacman manhandling Clotty no different from his last fights.

  • FlipSide says:

Yah, JS does have a chin, but does he have a wall of a body to take punches….. Pac is a great body puncher if you happened to notice in his fights… Look at Pac-Cotto fight, in the 5th or 6th round, there is a barrage of body punches on those round, softened up Cotto. Look at Pac-Hatton, Manny had one good body punch in the middle 2nd round that messed up Hatton (look for a second round fight with Hatton in YT, its there).

I think Pac will not going to have any problem with Clottey.

  • Draw says:

The PacMan will eat this one too!

  • ricky says:

Tough fight for Pacquiao but he will come out victorious over JC with a UD or possibly TKO in the late rounds. Can’t wait for this exciting fight! Will be in Dallas to watch…

  • Ancient_Silence says:

Look i think we all know this pre-fight nonsense talk of ‘Bigger men’ is pointless. Clottey may be strong and the ‘Bigger man’ but it doesn’t tip the scales at all in my opinion. Manny is in tip top shape and on top of the world at the moment. Clottey will need lots of courage to back up these statements of his and even then i don’t see him winning this one. I do hope that we get a tough fight though.

  • santiperes says:

Pacquiao is a ghetto fighter like most of them coming from the poor sector of society just like me.

  • Bobby Bagoong says:

This is gonna be a tough fight for Manny. And I’m sure he isn’t taking this likely. He will approach this fight like any other fight, that it will be his toughest fight. Thats the difference between Manny and other fighters, he believes that he is facing his toughest opponent ever. Freddie will prep him and develop a great game plan. I wonder who will be Manny’s sparring partner. I say, it will be reliables Shawn Porter, Amir Khan, and a fighter to be named later.

  • Boxing Fan says:

    @Nowell
What is a Ghetto boxer. Please explain.

  • Boxing Fan says:

Clottey will win. This fight won’t be at a catch weight

  • motownhitman says:

Nowell…fight of the year?? Get out of town with that mess! You probably never even heard about Clottey until the fight with Pac was announced.

  • Nowell says:

This is the fight of the year!!! Although, I’m a Pacfam I do like Clottey because he’s not a trash talker ghetto boxer. Clottey is a classy boxer.

Good luck to Clottey and wish you the best of luck of seeing some of the punches coming your way March 13th :)

  • Diamond says:

Joshua Clottey fights just hard enough to lose.
He is predictable and unlikely to pounce on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity by making the drastic improvement that would be required to beat Pac.
Pac on the other hand is NOT going to underestimate him. Nor do I expect Pac to do another rope-a-dope against Clottey! Pac will dismantle that coconut defense with his trademark combinations from unseen angles! Joshua WILL get rattled by the relentless assault, and fall victim to it soon.

  • crappy says:

LOL. Another funny article. Before Pac vs Cotto fight, Pac had been underdog in the pre-fights mainly because he is a smaller man.

This time is no difference. Clottey is a really big welterweight. During weigh-in, they maybe close to 147lb. But at fight night, Pac will be the same at 147lb but Clottey will come in at least 160lb. A 10 pound difference is a big disadvantage for Pac.

Clottey fought alternatively at middleweight in 1997-1999 and 2002-2008, the latest was Apr2008 TKOed Cruz in 5rd. His body is light middleweight but drained himself to get a lucrative match in welterweight division.

There is no way, Pac can knock down this guy. The plausible is either SD or UD. But anytime, Clottey can bring down a smaller Pac into canvass.

So, the writer is underestimating Clottey’s chances in full 147lb matchup. This is a tremendous battle for Pac – much harder than with Cotto (catchweight 145lb).

  • Inubasan says:

If Clottey is rated number 5 and Mayweather is rated number 2, darn… this Pacquiao-Clottey will be a big big fight. I can’t wait.

  • BLUE DOG says:

yes J C has enough to beat pacman, but can he handle the speed and power of manny. it might be a long night for J C.

  • ty says:

Clotty is a durable guy and will give manny a hard go. Floyd will be focused on Bernard Dunne. Floyd’s contract will include a “no drinking for life” clause for the Irishman.

  • Rican 101 says:

Easy win over a good name for Pacquiao, only way Mayweather can steal his thunder is to man up and face some treat like Mosley, Paul Williams , Martinez, Pavlik etc.
