By Jim Dower: In disappointing news, the January 30th unification bout between WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley and World Boxing Council welterweight champion Andre Berto has been reportedly called off. Berto sent a press release moments ago, saying “As a result of this disaster [the Haiti earthquake], I am mentally and physically exhausted and therefore I have no choice but to withdraw from my bout on January 30.”
As such, this can free Mosley up for a mega fight between him and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

I have to address this Pacquiao / Mayweather issue. I am neither a fan of either one of these fighters but I do recognize that these two are most likely the best fighters in the sport. Bottom line – Pacquiao is using performance enhancing drugs. For an athlete to decline a blood test (which btw should be mandated as it is in EVERY major sport) because he thinks it will weaken him is beyond ridiculous especially b/c his opponent will have to take that same test at the same time. If you are a student of boxing and you follow boxer’s careers you learn about body weight and chemistry. It is impossible for a fighter to start their career at 106-112 fly weight @ 20 years old – and then become a powerful 147 welterweight without use of a synthetic substance. Most welters start their pro careers at 130/135.
If you know boxing then you understand that it is not that important what two fighters did when they fought other people.It will not determine what happens if and when Floyd fights Pac man.Emotional fans give me the impression that A fighter somehow inhances their life. Get a life!

I agree May was good at 130 and even 135, but after he fought a past his prime DLH and made it to the big time with money, he decided the hell with his legacy and the hell with the boxing public and just figured he could make almost as much money taking no risk fights so why fight anyone who has a chance of beating him. When Pac caught him, people were concerned he might have killed him in the ring. That is what they mean when they say “knocked out COLD”. One judge thought that a past him prime De La Hoya actually won that fight with May. You don’t realize yet that May won’t fight anyone who he thinks has a chance of beating him. Even with Marquez, a fighter two weight classes below him, he had to cheat to gain an edge by telling Marquez he would come at 144 and then cheating on the extra two pounds because he wanted ZERO chance of losing his precious 0. If you took a poll on which fighter would be more likely to cheat between Pac and May if they could get away with it, what do you think that poll would look like? exactly.

OK, lets compare Mayweather fought Oscar at the weight Oscar had been fighting at for 8 years, Manny beat a weight drained Oscar. Floyd beat an undeafeted Hatton that was the biggest fight out there, Manny fought a Hatton that didn’t look the same since getting knocked out. And no, Valero isn’t as good, compare their opponents silly. Compare Floyd’s and Manny’s for that matter and Floyd has consistently fought the tougher competition. And he still has that “0″. Mosley might be able to take that away. I doubt it, but he probably has the best chance of anyone south of 154.

Floyd retired because of injuries. His ego and extravagant spending brought him back. He got more money to fight Judah than Arum offered him to fight Margarito. Mosley ducked Floyd. Cotto never wanted Mayweather. His fights have always been about the money. should he have fought Margarito or challenged Cotto for a fraction of what he made against Oscar and Hatton??? He came back and beat the man who most feel beat Manny less than 2 years ago. Manny moved up in weight fine and Mosley did before and Mayweather did before, even Oscar started out in lower weights. Cotto was hyped up and when people got tired of seeing Cotto fight bums, they put him against Margarito and Cotto was destroyed. Then Clottey is not good enough to beat a damaged

Pacman managed to avoid Juan Diaz and Campbell at 135. Campbell was considered dangerous at 135 b/c of his punch and a Juan Diaz was the recognized champ. Pacman pick the weakest champ he could get. The worse of the 2 Julio Diaz.
At 140 he got Hatton who was only ring champ, but did have a belt. He avoided Tim Bradley and others, and them he got a title shot against Cotto and bypassed every other top contender. Wow …Top Rank works magic with their fighter.

GBO has the date on HBO it was reserved for Hokpins vs RJJ. And them for Floyd vs Manny. But it was always GBP date on HBO. Arum is the one who made the fight on the same date to put pressure on HBO. It wouldn’t have been GBP ruining the sport by having a fight the same night as Manny. That honor would belong to Top Rank since GBP already had that date reserved. Top Rank knew this and went ahead and scheduled a fight when Mayweather already had announced he would fight that night. However, Schaefer and GBP actually show some mercy on Manny and kindness to boxing fans everywhere. Now, UFC is waiting for the official date, so they can move UFC 113 to any day that doesn’t include a Mayweather-Mosley fight.

@ chris jr……being 2 major fights in the same night would not be good for fans, fighters, and the sports itself. i’m sure a lot of people want to see them fight regardless who they fought. if both fights happen in the same night, ppv’s/fans will be divided. this is not really a good idea.
