Arum: “They don’t care who Manny [Pacquiao] fights” – News

By Dave Lahr: In an article at Tempo.com.ph Manny Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum says “It’s unbelievable. They don’t care who Manny fights.” Arum is speaking about Pacquiao’s popularity with stadium owners and boxing fans around the world many of who can’t get enough news about the Filipino star. Pacquiao and unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. are currently stuck in their negotiations with the random blood testing being the sticking point in the negotiations.

On Tuesday, an outside mediator, Daniel Weinstein, will be meeting with Top Rank, Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather Promotions to try and rectify the stalled negotiations. As for Arum’s claim that boxing fans don’t care who Pacquiao fights, that remains to be seen. Arum wants to match Pacquiao up next with World Boxing Association light middleweight champion Yuri Foreman if the mediator fails at reviving the Mayweather-Pacquiao talks.

A fight against Foreman, a fighter only known among hardcore boxing fans, would be a big test for whether casual boxing fans would be interested in paying for to see Pacquiao fight an unknown fighter. Pacquiao wants another title, and Foreman would appear to be the easiest way for Manny to accomplish that.

A much harder task, perhaps even impossible, would be for Arum to match Pacquiao up with WBC light middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, who is considered by many boxing fans to be the best fighter in the light middleweight division. That fight would be a much more interesting fight than to see Pacquiao fight Foreman, who is a fighter with weak punching power and a history of being a runner in his fights.

To be sure, it doesn’t give one a sense of well being to see Arum so upbeat about the stadium owners not caring who Pacquiao fights.

That gives me the impression that there may not be any budging in the negotiation process by Pacquiao’s management team. I hope I’m wrong about this, because I really want to see Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. But if Arum believes like he says that people don’t care who Pacquiao fights, then there is no real reason for Pacquiao’s team to give in and meet Mayweather halfway.

I think some fans would interested in seeing Pacquiao fight Foreman, but nothing like the same amount of fans that have watched Pacquiao’s recent fights against Miguel Cotto, Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya. It takes two good fighters to make a mega fight, and if you match Pacquiao against a fighter that many casual boxing fans have never heard of in their life, I doubt they’ll willing to pay big money to watch Pacquiao on pay-per-view no matter who is packaged together on the undercard.

Rufus, better stay quiet now like Mayweather Sr. Pacquiao will continue moving without Mayweather. The fact is boxing was exciting even Mayweather was in retirement. Stop digging your fruitless accusations.

    Hi lex_fugitive
If you don’t know, the fact is Mayweather went 2 lbs over the limit with Marques and he paid $600,000.

  • lex_fugitive says:

If Manny wants to play by the rules then drop the $10 million penalty. After all the sports organiztions and not the athletes make the rules, right ric?

  • lex_fugitive says:

So none of you Pac fans can name any decent fighter he has fought that wasn’t years and years past his prime?

  • Rufus says:

BS on Arum and all you people who say Pacquiao is the BIG draw. Compare Pac vs Hatton, May vs Hatton–who had the bigger PPV? Compare Pac vs De la Hoya, May vs De la Hoya–bigger PPV?(May vs DLH is still the record); Pac vs Marquez, May vs Marquez(was Pac vs Marquez even PPV?) Compare them??? Who is the bigger draw??

And please stop the 3 blood test nonsense–1 at the presser, 2, 30 days before and 3, right after the fight. Scheduled tests can be worked around people, hence RANDOM is required to ensure no dope. No athlete is above suspicion in 2010? Where have you people been for the last 10-15 years? Oops, I forgot, the Phillipines. Have you read/heard about the doping stories for all corners of the globe in sport–the Olympics, Tour de France, Baseball…

  • Conte says:

I remember before the De La Hoya fight, one Filipino politician wrote a letter to Oscar and pleaded with him not to take on the smaller Manny Pacquiao. The politician felt Pacquiao’s life was in danger in such a boxing match. Now we know how unfounded that fear was. In fact, it was Oscar who was in danger of suffering permanent damage had he continued on fighting past the 8th round.

That was rather curious. I could’ve sworn that that particular fear would’ve been more applicable to the Cotto fight. Cotto had all the tools to inflict serious damage on smaller fighters. And again, Pacquiao did not just took Cotto’s power punches without flinching, he knocked down the solid-chinned Cotto twice en route to the 12 round TKO.

A couple of years back, Pacquiao couldn’t even knock out Oscar Larios. Marquez rocked him with straight jabs. The second Barrera fight saw a foul right hook connected to Pacquiao’s jaw (while the ref was separating them) and Pacquiao took a minute or two to recover. The anorexicly thin Morales even backed up Pacquiao.

To go from life-and-death struggles at featherweight to knocking out solid-chinned fighters like David Diaz, De La Hoya and Cotto strikes me as suspicious. Oscar Larios survived Pacquiao for 12 rounds and Oscar and Cotto couldn’t?

I don’t know, but it sure sounds fishy to me.

Lets put things straight… manny never rejected any drug test or is he afraid of needles(he has tattoos all over his body), this is a misconception and misleads ignorant boxing fans, for the record manny subjected himself to NASC random drug test right after this drug test issue exploded, second manny agreed to a three random blood testing… 1st before the fights media conference, 2nd 30 days prior to the fight and 3rd right after fight night (these tests cannot escape pacman if ever he is using PED) eventhough these are not required by the NASC, manny’s camp was so humble that it offered these terms to mayweather’ camp even the latter is not a champion, however floyd was so hardheaded he insists on his own terms and even humiliates pacman over unwarranted media hype, pacman is a true sportsman and has never been found positive in using performance enhancing drugs in all his fights, he live a clean life all his boxing career (unlike the mayweathers who had been invovled in doping issues esp mayweather sr.) now whats the fuzz? it only brings us to reason… floyd is afraid of pacman he is chickening out and is using all reasons for a great escape!

  • lex_fugitive says:

Can anyone name one decent fighter that wasnt years and years beyondhis prime that Pacquiao beat?? And even Roach admits Cotto was a shell of his former self after Margarito. One, just one.

  • VINCE VEGAS says:

Arum probably means; ‘I don’t care who pays me when Manny fights’.

  • arroyomike says:

step up to the plate manny and fight the best! stop fighting stiffs!

  • bug says:

as what i observe that, de la hoya still can’t accept his defeat against pacman, last time he was with hatton side and pacman destroyed hatton in front of his two eyes and he tried to take cotto to his promotion after cotto expire his contract on top rank but unfortunately cotto was mercifully destroyed by pacman last nov. 14, 2009.now de la hoya doesn’t know what to do,he wants to combine forces with mayweather jr his opponent before, they try to outsmart pacman about the random blood test which they took the idea from the match of pacman vs. morales, which pacman was taken some blood two days before the fight which pacman was felt so weak at that fight and lose the fight against morales.now de la hoya screwed-up everything including the superfight of pacman vs. mayweather, and this fight is still questionably happen or not and no final decission yet for this fight. i think this is all golden boy promotion’s fault, because they accuse pacman of using illegal drug without any evidence now it become worse beside mayweather jr is scared to fight pacman they believed that pacman is using an illegal drug which is false accusation.

  • Summ Well D says:

In YouTube, there’s a Korean boy named Sungha Jung who is a guitar virtouso with over 4 million views. His cool fingers are seemed longer and disproportionate to his size and age. This boy is Asian. If the Mayweathers and his same-feather followers will see this, I am sure they will accuse this boy of using steroid because he was soooooo gooood! (that’s why I did not provide a link here) That’s how CRAZY these people are.

  • guest says:

Manny will STILL make millions regardless of whoever he fights. Floyd on the other hand needs Manny to make his millions, therefore Mayweather needs the fight more and needs to apologize or go bankrupt.

  • Summ Well D says:

The irony of all this is that even if they don’t have any shred of evidence to support that Mr. Pacquiao is using anything to enhance his performance, the smear campaign perpetrated by the Mayweathers and their elks, has already damaged the reputation of Mr. Pacquiao ruining his potential earnings in tens of millions or even billions from commercial endorsements, etc. and his candidacy in the Philippines. The Mayweathers should be held liable for it.

  • bug says:

for me as pacman fan i would like to see pacman fight against another title holder whoever it is at least pacman need some more collection to show to mayweather that pacman is way ahead of mayweather when it comes on title belts. maybe pacman can fight some junior middle weight champion out there or light middleweight as long as title holder, i think fans still wanna see pacman in the ring fighting bigger guys than picky mayweather jr.

  • Summ Well D says:

Boxers are licensed by the States which imposes conditions, requirements, etc. to keep that license valid. There is no such thing as Federal Boxing License. If the Federal government cannot even regulate boxing how dare the Mayweathers are imposing conditions. If the fight will take place in Nevada, Nevada has jurisdiction over the fighters, period. If Nevada does not require random blood and urine testing, period. To change the rule or to force Manny undergo random testing just for this fight against his will and would violate his due process or equal protection rights. He can do it voluntarily but he cannot be forced not even by the whole armed forces of America. If the Mayweathers or fans still don’t understand, better live in the jungle!

  • Concerned in LA says:

I guess Nevada Boxing rules are not good enough for PBF, and with all the knowledge about drugs he and his family have, that’s why they’re scared. I don’t think he and his team really believe MP is using, but think this hype (with drugs) is going to create more interest- it back-fired- admitt it and MP will understand ya all were just tryig to make more money! MP wants to fight, can’t you see – your blind if you don’t, but your lying and he knows it (doesn’t know about the money thing bro)- PB, you want to get in the ring and “kick his ass”- well apoligise – tell him about the money (you too dad sr.) Get on with – personally MP going to send you back into retirement (bro)…You guys

  • aloha says:

This whole thing is a mess. Why they keep on insisting Pacquiao to take a random blood test? Pacquiao was cleaned for all his fights. Mosley/Berto fight is closer than March 13. Why the Golden Boy Promotions never ask a blood test on that fight where Mosley was guilty of using steroids before? They’re something fishy the way the Golden Boy Promotions run this whole thing. Their mouths are just too big they can’t stop talking nonsense.

  • waltz says:

i guess pacman wants an easy fight this time. he’s been taking tough ones lately.

  • c0remaster says:

You guys are Idi0ts…Pacquiao already said he is not gonna fight Mayweather. And most of you said his on steroids. Why would you guys still want him to fight your Mayweather. Because of the money right?

  • Alex says:

    @Jason

I doubt Oscar would have won even if he was in his prime. But either way everyone is entitled to their. I am just waiting for the day that some fighter is able to give Floyd enough trouble in the ring that will have to go back to the days when he was more offensive. People hate Floyd for the way he fights now but I don’t put that blame on him. For me I see it as the fighter he is facing isn’t good enough to make him have to work to get the victory. I am hoping that person is Manny.

  • uh2tin says:

Pac should fight the winner of Mosley vs Berto.

Aim for (5th) lineal title and ww unification bout.

This will be an action packed and not a boring fight.

  • Mike Litoris says:

Everyone wants this fight to happen. From arm chair critics to the faithful supporters of both fighters. Regardless of the current stalemate of who’s winning the weekly battles that appear only when the promoters make an announcement. As of late, say maybe a week. We haven’t heard much from the Mayweather camp. As far as I know, Bob Arum’s quotes are the most recent news that people from the media have been lucky enough to write about. It’s a war of words right now and from what I’ve read on other sites besides this one, more and more people are coming out to write/show their support for Manny. Writing anything positive about The Pacman is an easy one. After all he is ‘The’ current Pound for Pound fighter according to Ring Magazine and other publications that use the term. Since 06 with the exception of 07, Manny has been crowned ‘Fighter of the Year’. Floyd won 07. So, 08 and 09 belonged to The ‘Little Guy’ from the Philippines. Of course there’ll always be those who will argue this and hey, we have every right to do so. But besides this whole drug testing fiasco started by the Mayweathers, what negative comments does Manny deserve ? Hmm, I wish I can think of something legitimate to write but I can’t. I’ve read most of the ‘hate mail’ from the sea of arm chair critics and I have to say that some are pretty funny but most really kind of lame. The facts are the facts folks. Manny has fought most if not ALL the contenders that were most fit at the time. Hey, due to timing he can’t possibly fight everyone but from my knowledge I don’t think he’s turned away any fighter that ‘wants’ him in that current division. Personally, I think Manny’s crazy to jump from weight class to weight class without ruffling a few feathers along the way. Imagine how many fighters that dream of doing such a task. Being ‘the’ center of attention in 7 different divisions ! Knowing that in each division there’s more than a few guys fighting to get that attention and hopefully ‘The’ crown ! It’s really quite unbelievable the accomplishments of Manny. And to do it in a humbling manner that doesn’t disrespect his opponent win or lose…If he retired now I’d be a thankful fan. His style of fighting is what keeps the audience glued to the screen and on their toes every second of every round. His sportsmanship is a character that most of us hope for when playing our sport(s) of choice. He fights coz he loves the sport of boxing. I also think that money is 2nd as far as reasons why he fights. For this, Manny is a true fighter/boxer and will be remembered by his peers as ‘One’ of the greats.

  • Alex says:

    Jason

When Floyd fought Oscar, he had all the cards stacked against him. Oscar chose the ring size, glove size, and the weight at 154. Which Floyd had never fought at. That alone should be enough of a reason why Oscar was a better fighter against Floyd than Pacman. Not discrediting what Manny did. But come on. Watch both fights and you obviously can see the difference. Oscar doesn’t even look like the same fighter.

  • BisDak says:

    @Anonymous,

Pacman has already $$$Million. His life and his family are already set for the rest of their lives.

There is NO reason for Pacman to fight someone, make him earn $25-$40Million, and defame Pacman’s legacy and name. Why would Pacman do that?

I rather sue their @$$ off for slander or similar, and make $$$$ without breaking a sweat… :) Who knows when all things are done, Pacman could own GBP. :)

  • lex_fugitive says:

Mayweather fought de la hoya when he was still decent, and fought an undeafeted Hatton. He also dismantled Marquez who beat Pacquiao twice. And Manny has been dodging Manny ever since. And dodging Mosley. And now he’s dodging Mayweather. Corrales, Judah, Baldomir, Castillo, Hernandez, a younger de la hoya, all of these are much tougher fights than anyone Manny has fought. They all were supposed to beat Mayweather and they all failed. Barrera, Morales, de la hoya were all so old and had been in so many wars that they were shells of their former selfs by the time they fought Pacquiao. And Cotto was too, Roach even admits that all the time. Pacquiao has fought one good fighter who wasn’t years past his prime- Marquez- and lost both times. Marquez was calling him out, and so has Mosley and now Mayweather and Pacquiao is trying to get a fight with Yuri Foreman?!? Why won’t Manny fight a decent boxer? He needs to quit running scared.

  • Thegreatestof all Time says:

PacMan has ducked no one (Morales, Barrera, Marquez, De La Hoya, Cotto, Hatton while Floyd has really fought who (Corrales, Castillo and De La Hoya) he has not fought anyone at 147 other than Oscar. Floyd is looking for a way out of this fight period.

  • sugar says:

i thought manny was gonna fight the magic man

  • M says:

Personally I don’t get what all the fuss is about. Manny is an astonishingly good fighter without doubt, but guaranteed neither him nor Floyd will face either of the true champions of the Welterweight division, Berto and Moseley. They’re the only two who properly won their titles – pacman’s came via Cotto who had a default win over Jennings. Mayweather gave his up. Neither can claim to be top dog until they’ve beaten either of the two real belt holders, plain and simple and that’s the way boxing has always been regardless of past form.

  • BNB says:

They way I see it steroids are legal in boxing, as long as they keep it “on the low.”

As yourselves this Pacfans, have Mark McGuire made the HOF, Will “Slamming Sammy” make the HoF. In McGuire never felt a tests and steroids weren’t banned when he played, but he was punished by the court of public opinion and his choice to ignore the subject nurt him more. If Pacman ever get caught or if an eye witness somehow appears, the court of public opinion will bury him.

Taking the tests can only help the Pacman not hurt him. Why is the man so afraid?

el tsunami, the only reason why david diaz and not the best light weights because the best where fully booked fighting each other and team Pac could not wait for them. After DDD was a chance for fame and biggest paycheck which PAC was not willing to miss that was Oscar Dela Hoya. Then there was Hatton next Cotto. Pac had no time to take on the best of the light weights. And by the way do you honestly believe that Juan Diaz,Casamayor/Kastsidis will be able to fight Yuri Foreman at 154 and win? if not then stop criticizing Pac for challenging Yuri Foreman.
