Amir Khan vs. Juan Manuel Marquez on May 15th?

By Jim Dower: According the latest boxing news gossip, WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan will be facing Juan Manuel Marquez on May 15th. Instead of fighting World Boxing Association light welterweight champion Marcos Maidana, Khan will steer around that fight and take a bout against the smaller, 36-year-old Marquez. Maidana will likely fight on the undercard instead of against Khan, in an effort to give the knockout artist Maidana more visibility before matching him against Khan later in 2010.
Golden Boy Promotions, Khan’s new promoters, want to match Khan up with a proven star for his debut fight. Maidana isn’t well known by boxing fans like Marquez. The choice of picking an older and smaller opponent to fight is something that Khan has already done once previously against then 35-year-old Marco Antonio Barrera, who Khan defeated by a 5th round technical decision in 2009.

JMM is tough and will give khan all he can handle. A well picked opponent though by golden boy Marquez doesnt have the power that MM has and it wouldnt be a very good business move to throw khan in against any kind of power right now.
Still a good match up though. This is a good oppurtunity for khan to show how good he is.
This is a much bigger fight for Khan than Maidana.. and a much more risky challenge.. People think that JMM is shot after his beating to mayweather?? Mayweather is class and mad JMM look much worse than he is.. How can you forget the fight before, JMM vx Juan Diaz.. Mannnn now that was a war and there is no chance Khan could take the shots he was landing on Diaz.. Even Mayweather got caught by JMM but Mayweather also has an iron chin! Khan will get sparked by JMM and I think this is a stupid fight for GBP to take as once he gets sparked no one is going to want to watch him!

If khan wants to cement a legacy he cannot fight old fighters. When khan fights the likes, of devon alexander, timothy bradley and marcos madaina and if he wins, he will be a boxing legend. Until then we will never truly know khans potential and how good he really is.

he has cherry picked Marquez because he knows he is not a natural at light welterweight and has recently had a bad loss to Mayweather rather than fighting someone who has had 26 fights with 25 ko’s and is big and strong at that weight.
If Marquez beats him it will be because he is a more inteligent boxer and has a lot of heart. Khan has taken the easier fight if he fights Marquez compared to Maidana. Khan is chinless and heartless so Marquez has a great shot against him even though he is 36, not at his natural weight and has had 56 fights and a lot of wars.

Khan has technically never lost at lightweight. He was weight drained and didnt have the right training programme so it doesnt count. Prescott would of beat marquez in 34 seconds, he actually not that good, but the name brings fortunes to Khan, also it will be nice to have his name on his resume.

Marquez is a very hard fight for Khan.
I can see Khan moving quickly and skillyfully round Marquez and jabbing rounds BUT the moment Khan tries to unload he will get hit and hit hard with a well timed counter. He will also find that Marquez is able to feint Khan into parts of the ring he wants to avoid and punish him.
Sure Mayweather outclassed Marquez but all other top p4p have struggled or lost against him.
To fight Marquez is a massive step up for anyone other than the most established top fighters

Amir Khan certainly has shown his got some guts to fight J-M-Marquez. This will silence all the critics who think his dodging dangerous fighters. Khan will out box Marquez very easily, it will showcase how skillfull he is. There will also be a healthy sum to pocket after which will be deserved for Khan. Maidana will be on the undercard, this will give him more exposure for when he fights Khan. Well Done GBP. Fantastic works here for King Khan
