zaveck43By Jim Dower: In last weekend’s bouts, German based (translation: a fighter who trains and lives in Germany) Jan Zaveck (28-1, 16 KO’s) put in an impressive display of power punching to stop International Boxing Federation welterweight champion Isaac Hlatshwayo (29-2-1, 10 KO’s) in the 3rd round to capture his IBF title at the Wembley Hall, in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. Zaveck, 33, knocked Hlatshwayo down three times in the bout, including two times in the 3rd round to get the win.

Zaveck put Hlatshwayo down with a series of punches in the 3rd round that sent him bouncing off the ropes and down on the canvas. Then seconds later, Zaveck knocked Hlatshwayo down again with a four punch combination. This time, referee Kenny Chevalier stopped the bout at 2:55 of the round.

Zaveck was too strong for Hlatshwayo in the opening round of the fight, battering him with hard right hands over and over again. Zaveck caught Hlatshwayo near the ropes near the end of the round and unloaded on him with a brief flurry of hard punches to the head that had Hlatshwayo reeling.

In the 2nd round, Zaveck continued to punish Hlatshwayo with hard punches landing one big shot after another while Hlatshwayo attempted to block them. In the final seconds of the round, Zaveck landed a hard right hand that sent Hlatshwayo flying backwards against the ropes and then down on the canvas where the referee ruled it a knockdown.

All in all, it was a great performance by Zaveck. He showed great power and a lot of pressure in taking Hlatschwayo out and capturing his title.

Mijares stops Dolorosa

In the 2nd fight of his comeback, former World Boxing Association/WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (38-6-2, 17 KO’s) made easy work of the badly overmatched BJ Dolorosa (8-3, 1 KO’s) last Saturday night, stopping him in the 6th round at the Plaza de Toros Rea, in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico. Mijares, 28, dominated every round of the fight and finally took Dolorosa out with a hard left-right combination in the 6th that caused Dolorosa to stagger backwards and fall down.

The bout was then stopped at 2:05 of the round. For Mijares, it was his 2nd consecutive win following three losses that had Mijares questioning whether he should continue with his boxing career or not. The southpaw Mijares defeated Jorce Arce by a lopsided 12 round decision in April 2007 to capture the WBC super flyweight title. Mijares then successfully defended the title five times before losing it last year in a 9th round knockout loss to Vic Darchinyan in November 2008.

On Saturday night, Mijares jabbed Dolorosa at will, hitting him with stinging shots and nice straight left hands to the head. Dolorosa only rarely attempted to throw anything back at Mijares. It was poor matchmaking, however, as Dolorosa had only 10 fights under his belt over a two year pro career compared to the compared to the 45 fights and 12 year career of Mijares. Whatever the case, Mijares looked very impressive in dispatching the green fighter.
