By D. Berry: I’ve been reading Pacquiao/Mayweather Jr articles on this site for a few months now and there is one thing I have noticed; people watch boxing but don’t understand it. So when I see people say that Floyd Mayweather Jr has boring fights, I laugh because they don’t have an idea what “boxing” is. Mayweather is one of, if not the best “boxers” I’ve ever seen in my life. The way he breaks his opponents down is really something to see. If you can’t understand Floyd’s style, its because you’re into checkers and fans of the sport like me, are into chess.
Next we have Paul “I’m really a 6 foot 2 inch middle weight but I like to go down to welterweight to fight smaller men” Williams. Everyone says Money Mayweather fights smaller fighters. WELL, PAUL WILLIAMS IS BIGGER THAN EVERYONE HE’S EVER FOUGHT! This dude got beat by Quintana for gods sake! Martinez got robbed in that fight against him. This guy throws a million BS punches a fight. If Floyd fought him it would be a repeat of the Diego Corrales fight because of Floyds countering ability. Every left Paul throws, that right straight will be coming over the top of it. He doesn’t have the speed or defense to be mentioned in the same sentence with Mayweather.
Miguel Cotto. This guy is nothing like the fighter his father built him to be. If you notice, he was never knocked out. I question his heart more than anything. He had Antonio Margarito beat, all he had to do was hold on and win the last round to get the split division but I personally see him as a quitter. I really don’t even have to speak on this one, his last 3 fights say it all.
Manny Pacquiao. I must tip my hat to Manny, he is one of the greatest “brawlers” I have ever seen, but make no mistake, he doesn’t stand a chance. Truthfully, I think the people who don’t understand boxing are mainly Pacquiao fans.
I don’t think Mayweather is going to knock Pacquiao out, but a eight rounds to four unanimous is coming March 13th in favor of Mayweather. Pacquiao does well against people who stand in front of him and slug it out. But against “Money”? Nah. Floyd won’t be there for him to land those “9 and 10″ hit combos these Pacquiao fans keep talking about. Mayweather will be to the side of him landing that left check hook he throws so well. People speak on Manny’s speed but I think his speed is quite regular.
If he’s so fast why does he always get hit? Mayweather’s hands and head movement is fast and we won’t get into the best footwork in the sport. As far as those angles everyone keeps talking about, stop it, that’s Floyd “Money” Mayweather he’s going against. They don’t call him pretty because of how he looks on a day to day basis; they call him pretty because of how he looks after a fight. Untouched. Mayweather makes all his opponents (except Castillo in the first fight) look stupid. The thing about Mayweather is you know he’s coming with either a jab, left check hook, or straight right, and you can’t do anything about it.
With all that said we have the last wannabe/haters. The people. People hate Mayweather because they don’t understand him. They don’t understand why he feels the need to state the obvious: HE’S THE BEST. When Floyd was a humble young guy, nobody ever paid him any attention. In my view, Bob Arum didn’t promote Mayweather that well like he does for Pacquiao.
That’s when Mayweather was humble like Shane Mosley. To get to those money fights he had to follow the route of most young black males which is to “TALK that stuff and WALK that stuff.” People complain about how he doesn’t throw combos or knock people out all the time but that’s because Mayweather doesn’t like to just swallow his food, he chews it first. (Ask Marquez) I think everyone should give him his credit after this fight. Its past due.

Mayweather asked for a random drug test from Pacquiao because A)Drug tests conducted by the Commission are rubbish has allowed many other boxers to escape and involves them doing a announced urine test and a blood test after a match
B) Pacquiaos the only boxer to jump up the weight classes and becoming faster and stronger stronger Maybe but faster? Thats sounds odd Mayweather jumped up the weight classes yet hes actually slower
if floyd the ugly mayweather really wanted to do the drug testing, why didn’t he do this when he fought DLH the quitter and hatton? why demand it now when he knows that the fans wanted to see pacquiao-mayweather fight? it’s all about smoke screens for KENTUCKY FLOYD CHICKEN. he cherry picked his opponents in the past and now that he is cornered to fight MANNY and get the biggest payday of his “questionable” career, he had to find a way out of this fight. and guess what, the mayweather camp (crack addict floyd sr, soon to be incarcerated again, uncle roger and loud mouth ugly floyd jr) came out with olympic blood testing! you mayweather fans are idiots. why become a fan of a thug? even before MANNY became popular, i was never a fan of KENTUCKY FLOYD. there’s just something about his style of boxing that does not excite the boxing afficionados such as myself. i’d rather watch morales, marquez, and the barrera’s. but KENTUCKY FLOYD? no thanks. i’d rather watch a game of basketball. and now ugly floyd is up to his loud mouth ways again and trying to turn the tables and blaming MANNY and TOP RANK for the collapse of the fight. KNOW THIS, MANNY DOES NOT NEED FLOYD, IT’S FLOYD WHO NEEDS MANNY. after everything is all said and done, UGLY FLOYD will be known as the boxer who DUCKED the very good BOXERS!

Everyone first said Mayweather doesn’t want the fight but he agreed to it in record time. I like Pac Man for his guts and glory style but he has shown that he want no part of Floyd because he has no chance of beating him.
So may things negative things were said by Roach and Arum about Floyd but he wants to fight. Mayweather it appears is the only one making concessions. Blood testing is no big deal. What’s Manny got to hide? He had no problem submitting to blood samples when fighting Hatton. What has suddenly changed? A new phobia is nothing but an excuse.
Come on Manny, put your money where your mouth is! I heard your fans shouting how they want Mayweather next after the Cotto fight, sign on the dotted line and make it happen.
I’ve learned my lesson..its easy to fall in love with punchers but when they meet smart fighters who are strategic they normally look horrible a la Trindad vs B Hop, Tyson vs Douglas, Holyfiend, ect and Shane vs Forrest just to name a few. When i think about the Money May vs Pac i can only give Pac a punchers chance. When u lay out all their attributes the only thing Pac has is the punching power. When i bring up Marquez or Morales to the Pac fans they tell me Pac is a different fighter which is kinda true but what they fail to realize is that DLH, Hatton, Cotto and Diaz was pretty much the same fighters…all had the size but didnt use it and all of them stood right in front of Pac throwin careless punches with no movement. That has to be takin into account! We havent seen many make mid-fight adjustments like Floyd…if Pacman was to beat PBF i only see it being a KO which i highly doubt because he has absolutly no chance to out box him!
Floyd is faaaaar from boring..u guys sound silly! The same people complaining about his style are probably the same people dissing UFC. Boxing is not “Rock em Sock em robots.” All boxers practice bobbing and weaving, blocking and slipping punches ect…why is it bad that PBF applies that in his fights? I am wondering about the author. I am new at this boxing stuff. What was the author’s opinion about the Pacman and Cotto’s fight? If he analyzed that Cotto would be the winner then, this author just lost his credibility.

PS. I believe Pacman will win by decision but no one really knows (on any givin fight night) who will get that bomb or find that weakness. I just want to see a great fight (constant shifts in momentum) hopefully with pac as the victor. Whether wrong or right as a boxing fan it would be plausable to me for the loser to actually crown the p4p king at center ring and garnish him with ALL the kingdom’s gold. Mayweather is an artist. I am in awe of what he has done. I think he should put his MONEY where his mouth is. I think he should insist on a winner take ALL purse (not 50/50). True gladiators have always took ALL. This bout will be the best in my lifespan. Shouldn’t this be a true gladiator war where winner takes all (except the life of the looser), weather you are a pacman fan or a mayweather fan? I am ready for the arena!!! When punches are thrown, it takes more energy out of a guy to miss than it does to land. Floyd has the best punch stats in the game and as such has great stamina. Floyd paces himself, adjusts on the fly and out thinks his opponents AND their trainers. I understand Roach is a great trainer but how do you train against boxing IQ? What we know up to this point is that no fighter OR trainer has beaten Floyd and Roach trained one of those fighters. I understand Manny is a different fighter than Oscar but based upon boxing IQ it is safe to say that Floyd will use his ring IQ to interrupt whatever game plan Roach comes up with.

Mayweather is by far the best boxer on the planet, he has skills to die for, there is NOT another boxer on the planet who has the all round boxing talent that he has.

As a Brit we tend to love our own hence being astounded that Mayweather Jnr isnt totally idolised throughout the U.S. I had seen a little of him prior to the Hatton fight but since have watched all his previous fights. Hit and don’t get hit!!! His fights are not boring they are boxing intelligence and immense skill. I guess there are 2 types of boxing fan, those who think its about a big brawl and KO and those who appreciate true skill and natural boxing ability. I am certain Mayweather will take care of Paquiao, maybe then he will recieve the recognition he deserves. No wonder he loves the British boxing fans so much, he couldnt believe the applause and adoration Hatton recieved even after he beat him. Big up Floyd keep boxing clever !
When I say Floyd fights are boring it’s a testament to how good he is. He dominates his opponents, I can appreciate that but just looking for that fighter that will challenge him.. People keep saying two of the best fighter of our era.. Dont get me wrong I love Pac-man but Floyd is on another level. Floyds a threw-back fighter, fighting in the wrong era its just a blessing we get to witness it. On March 13 it will once again be another boring Mayweather fight in which he completely domaint his opponent.

This is absolutley fantastic! This is what boxing is about, bringing the best fights possible for all the boxing fans. No doubt that this is the best since Hagler vs Leonard. At it is great to se all the fans backing up their fighters for this up-coming fight. The artical however is just TERRIBLE! Come on pal, if you are at all a ban of boxing than you have to give this fight the credit that it deserves, since the two best fighters of the new millenium are going to square-off and put there god giving talents, and all the hard work and years of training, in this fight. Floyd is with no doubt a masterfull boxer and I tip my hat to the guy. He is by no means a runner…and I do not believe he ducks opponents. He does select them but for his best interest and for business. Can you blame him…well you shouldn’t. Look at all the previous fighters who have been “fearless” and taken on anybody. Where do the end up. Other than washed-up or with short carriers. But at the Same Time you come across a man like Paquiao. A very special person besides the fact that he is just as great of a fighter as Floyd. But come March 13 he will prove to be better. His skills, speed, power, and heart will have him prevail and come out on top. He will prove it with a K.O. in the 9th.

Manny has equal chance of winning in this fight. Don’t forget Mayweather fought only one game and it wasn’t even that easy for him to know out Marquez. On top of that he had all the advantages… Reach and weight and it was his division! Marquez had to go up two divisions..
All I’m saying, don’t just think Mayweather will win. A lot of boxing experts think it will go either way! Are you even a boxing expert?
I have a suggestion, a bare knuckle showdown tournament between all the people that think Floyd is boring. The winner gets to step in the ring with Floyd for a 6 round bout. Then we might get some educated posts.
Seriously though come on guys don the gloves get in the ring at the gym and learn something about the sport before dribbling nonsense onto a message board. Everyone is free to explore opinions but when people are basing their speculation on semantics and ” i don’t like his style so i want the other guy to win.”

As far as brawling. Manny has developed a great right hand. He is a totally different boxer than what he was even 2 years ago. If you watch his tapes he can hurt and it’s obvious he hurts opponents with both hands and lots of different angles. Manny has too many weapons, watch his pivots, watch his hooks with his right hand. He doesn’t even use his left hand as often as he used to!
As far as Duran goes, I do see a lot of Manny in Duran. A pure athlete who was able to refine his God given talents and beat everyone and anyone.
BTW the reason Floyd will lose, isn’t because he doesn’t have enough talent he doesn’t have enough heart! He fights only for himself and for the payday.

In the end boxing is entertainment. I enjoy Floyd’s skill too but it is without question that Pacquiao is the most entertaining fighter in the sport – arguably ever. Without Pacquiao, this sport would be like checkers and chess – in a box, on a shelf. I love this sport and I root for Pacquiao because everything he’s done done to bring it back to life. I really do hope the fans won’t allow Mayweather to dance all night and boo him if he does. It may force him to actually fight toe-to-toe. It may show him as a more verse fighter (extending his legacy), or it might give him his first loss (a la Duran v. Leonard I).

Pacquiao is a feel good story. Most feel good stories come to an end. This one will end on march 13. Floyd is boring to people who don’t appreciate all aspects of boxing. You have to appreciate a person who is basically unhittable. His style of boxing is an art. You guys should watch MMA and UFC if you want a constant brawl. Floyd never said he would knock him out. But, he will win which is the goal of ALL fighters. No need to compare common opponents. Just, wait for the fight. I really take offense to the whole “Pacquiao fans are brawlers who like to get drunk.” I’m half filipino and respect him for what he has done for the sport. You claim that people who do not appreciate Mayweather’s style do not know boxing. I agree with you on that to a certain degree, i can appreciate his style but lets face it, it’s not AS entertaining to watch.
The whole Cotto being a quitter theory is completely obscene. This guy was done in round 9 of the PAC FIGHT and still wanted to make it to the end, that’s the heart of a champ. You can find ways to discredit all the fans that have started watching boxing because of Pacquiao, but you have to face the facts, without them, boxing is as good as dead and the PAC vs FMJ fight would not have the draw that it does today.

So, because Roberto Duran got better with age and learned more techniques more tools. That’s what Manny has done, he has learned how to use his speed, he has learned how to use his right hand and has learned how to study opponents and win. What has PBF learned over the last 2 years of fighting?

If you know boxing using your jab and distance is very important against a lefty is very important especially against Manny Pacquiao…also circling Manny to his to his right away from his left. Manny Pacquiao destroyed all those 4 fighters but couldnt do that to Marquez!!! what does that say about Marquez? and Marquez fought Manny at 126lbs and 130lbs where Manny should have been faster and stronger!!!!!!!!!!!!! but he fought smart, used his jab and distance.. manny came foward he moved away and countered with his jab or right hand down the pipe. March 15, 2008 Manny fights Marquez at 130# He knocked Marquez down solidly! How many times did PBF knock him down? None. PBF DID NOT even have the dignity to come in at the agreed upon weight! He was 2 # overweight! That is classless.
December 6, 2008 Manny fights Oscar De La Hoya at 147 pounds. Manny went up 12 pounds. Made Oscar sit in the eighth round and now is retired!! Floyd fought him on May 5, 2007. So, in 1 and 1/2 years he was washed up? He took PBF the entire distance to lose a decision.
PBF fought Hatton 7/28/07. Hatton had to go up to 147. PBF made the comment that Hatton was “that Hatton was one of the toughest fighters he had ever fought, that he just kept coming and coming, and that he wants to promote fights, with Hatton being his first client.” Beat him in the 10th round.
Manny fought Hatton where he was undefeated at 140#. Knocked him out cold in the second round, but knocked him down 3 times in the first round!
So, what r u all saying Pacquiao is lucky, Pacquaio beat a solid Miguel Cotto at 145 pounds. How can any of you say that he is washed up! He fought with a huge gash to his left eye against Joshua Clottey. He could have quit but didn’t. It was Cotto who wanted to continue against Pacquiao. To say he was washed up or damaged goods is BS. You brought up some good points regarding Floyds’s tactical genius in the ring. I think he’s under appreciated because he’s been playing it way too safe for too long now. I believe Floyd has forgotten that boxing is also a spectacle sport made to entertain fans. People love watching high risk events, life and death situations, the underdog going up against Goliath. Floyd is such a natural genius, but he won’t test himself to the limits and beyond because he’s too afraid to lose. Unlike team sports where if one player plays it safe and is boring to watch, his other more flamboyant team mates can make up for this. Boxing on the other hand is one on one for twelve rounds. And because Floyd chooses to play it so defensively the whole time, he tends to detract casual would-be fans and only reels in the purist boxing enthusiasts. With that said, Floyd is anything but invincible. Pacquiao will not meet Floyd in the ring using the same tactics he pulled of with past fighters. Pacquiao is at his peak and also a genius in his own right (gifted with both skill and intelligence). This fight will either go the distance or end early. We’ll have to wait and see for the excitement to explode in the ring!

Floyd fans & so-called boxing “real” fans tend to forget that it’s not only the fighters who prepare for the fight. Roach admitted that they have their work cut out for them, that they need mre than just 8 months of training to prepare against Floyd. Considering this, Roach knew that they need a new tactic/ploy to counter Floyd. And there lies Manny’s advantage. They are a TEAM, unlike Floyd’s camp. Team Pacquiao will prepare for what Floyd brings into the fight. Every fight of Manny they bring something new. Can we say that against Floyd? Every Floyd fan sticks to the same old “Floyd’s defense is superb, his fast, he’s good footwork, etc.” Which means Floyd brings the same style of boxing everytime, every fight.

I wouldn’t say Floyd is underappreciated. He is appreciated precisely for what he does and can do in the ring… He’s the best defensive boxer of all time. But nobody will put his name down in the top 20 of all time the same way Pacquiao gets recognized because simply, the list is biased towards fighters who produce sensational fights with lots of action, not defensive boxers. So I would say it’s the fighting style that’s not given as much credit and not Floyd per se.

To “Jorge”: I never jumped on the Pacquiao bandwagon. I’ve been a fan of his since his first fight in the US. Marquez may have given Pacquiao problems in their 2 fights, but Manny is a “complete” fighter now. I have nothing against Floyd, but Manny has too many weapons that Floyd hasn’t encountered. Hey Jorge…stop giving excuses why Manny won against boxers past their prime. You know everyone thought DLH would defeat Manny in ’08 where Manny proved all critics wrong. Hatton was still in his prime and kept saying he was the bigger man & Hatton ended up on the canvas in the 2nd round. Cotto is still at his prime and is 2 years younger than Pacquiao. Cotto defeated Mosley who is in the top p4p list. How could a smaller Pacquiao knock down a bigger Cotto twice? In the later rounds Cotto was running like a chicken because he didn’t know what to do anymore. Floyd doesn’t have the power to knock down Manny because he’ll be busy running away trying to dodge punches. Floyd can’t run forever the whole fight. Would you want to watch a fight where a boxer is running away? Manny gets stronger at the later rounds. You know Manny will be in great shape as usual one of the best conditioned athletes in any sport. Remember Floyd fought a Marquez that had to go up 2 weight divisions so where’s the fairness in that? Even if Pacquiao fought Marquez for the 3rd time Pacquiao would knock Marquez out this time to end the trilogy. I remember Jose Luis Castillo said Manny is a better fighter than Floyd after sparring Manny.
Whats difficult to accept is that once Mayweather delivers the defeat to Pacquiao, the success will be admonished by saying that Mayweather beat a smaller, shorter, Filipino fighter that was focusing on politics in the Philipines anyway! Zero credit will be given him.
Pacquaio will be seen as the second coming and will be annointed to sainthood should he beat Mayweather.

Great article…This sums up what I have been saying all along. Money is boxing in its purest form. Text-Book perfect. Not a biased article like some are saying. It is just too honest for Pacquiao fan to take. Pacquiao is going to have to turn this into a slug fest to win but that strategy is an unoriginal game plan for PBF and he will not let it happen…I think people will be surprised how easily Money dispatches Pacquiao…
I read that Mayweather has a 73″ reach versus Pacquiao’s 68″. Given this advantage combined with his superb boxing skills it is imperative that after the March 13 fight Mayweather fans not even attempt to come up with any excuses on why he loses to Pacquiao.

Pacquiao is fast on offense but not that fast on defense thats why he get hit a lot. I’m a chess player, football, and basketball fan. One principle I learned from all of these is that the best defence almost ALWAYS beats a great offence. And Manny has a great offence, but when his great offence is taken away from him, by facing the BEST DEFENCE BOXER our our time, Pacman wont have the defense to keep him away from the most ACCURATE boxer of our time. Floyd with straight right hand leads right from the off – Manny’s got no good counter for that from the southpaw stance bar his feet and he spends too much time in the air not to catch a few. Manny’s biggest weakness is that he bounces – if Floyd tunes into that he’ll catch him when he can’t move at least a few times.

Agree with the article – boxers in the uk when interviewed pretty much all rate Mayweather as the best in the game because they know the game. I said after the Marquez fight Mayweather won’t be beaten by a smaller guy at this stage of his career. You can’t give a fighter like Mayweather an inch reach advantage and expect to do well. Manny is quick, but Floyd’s feet are quicker. And you’re absolutely right – people that don’t know the game look at Manny’s excitement and pick him. Floyd will keep him on a jab and a straight right hand all night and either win by landslide points or knock him out in the later rounds – my guess is Floyd will go for the knockout late on. But hey, we will finally see exactly what he’s made of and it’ll be a great fight.

Mostly its the people who dont know boxing, and have fallen in love with Manny Pacquiao.. Who in reality beat guys who were never in there prime. David Diaz wasnt even in the top 5 of his weight class, Oscar De La Hoya was old and had to shrink down in weight, Ricky Hatton overrated, and Miguel Cotto “damaged goods”. Even Freddie Roach said Miguel Cotto wasnt the same fighter after the Margarito Fight. I wont mention Juan Manuel Marquez because both fights were close and many people had Marquez winning those fights.
Floyd has amazing footwork, knows his distance, hits you and moves, an excellent jab, great defense, has amazing hand speed. There is really nothing that you can say that Floyd doesnt do good in the ring. He is complete fighter and those who love boxing and know boxing appreciate his skill. Floyd should be able to run circles around Manny Pacquiao and win the fight easily. Because of his hand speed, the angles he gives, his defense and his counter punching ability. Look at what Marquez did to Pacquiao in two fights and how he was able to neutralize pacquiao speed and power and that was by moving away from pacquiao left, counter punching with the right, using his distance, jab and not letting Manny Pacquiao get close. IF people dont think Floyd Mayweather Jr cant do that more effectively than Juan Manuel Marquez than you dont know boxing or have seriously jumped on the Pacquiao band wagon.

Pacuiao is not only a ‘brawler’. The proof of this is that he continues to impressively succeed in the sport of boxing and not in the sport of brawling. His skill set differs from PBF,that’s true.
