Super Six Lightweights: Part 1
By Peter Wells: Don’t worry, I’m not going to become obsessed with the Super Six, but for my next articles I will be talking about a Super Six tournament in these weight divisions: Lightweight, Light Welterweight, Welterweight, Middleweight, Light Heavyweight, Cruiserweight and Heavyweight. Each division I review I’ll have part 1 to predict my first 3 fights, part 2 the second 3, and part 3 for the last 3. Then I’ll do part 4 for the semi’s and part 5 for the final. I have already got the fighters and the fights. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I’ve done writing.
For the lightweights I have chosen these 6 fighters:
Ali Funeka 30-2-3
Michael Katsidis 26-2
Edwin Valero 25-0
Kevin Mitchell 30-0
Joan Guzman 29-0-1
Paulus Moses 25-0
The lightweight division presents lots of good fights and this is how the tournament will start off:
Ali Funeka vs Kevin Mitchell
I think this could be a very good fight, Funeka would show control with his reach, but Mitchell can get inside and cause Funeka some problems. Funeka should control the majority of the fight as long as he doesn’t let Kevin inside too much, and as long as he doesn’t get robbed again Ali should take a comfortable decision.
Michael Katsidis vs Joan Guzman
Katsidis isn’t a quality fighter, but can slug it out if he needs to and can beat decent opponents, but as Casamayor and Diaz proved he isn’t invincible when against better opposition. Guzman can box well, and can take a punch, although Michael has the power to put him down. I’d expect Guzman to control most of the rounds with a few exceptions to grind out a mostly one sided contest.
Edwin Valero vs Paulus Moses
Moses is a new guy on the block, and has some true potential; he will be against a huge puncher in Edwin Valero, who has won all 25 contests by KO. Both fighters are unbeaten, and a good boxer always beats a good fighter, well that’s what they say. But that isn’t always the case and I’d expect Edwin to win by stoppage after 5 rounds.
So after the first 3 fights this is how I predict the group will look like:
1. Edwin Valero 3pts
2. Ali Funeka 2pts
3. Joan Guzman 2pts
4. Kevin Mitchell 0pts
5. Michael Katsidis 0pts
6. Paulus Moses 0pts

Philip, you have a good point ’cause the state of the heavyweight division is dire, but I think you’re being a bit harsh to say no-one has a chance to beat either Klit. Wlad’s shown before that he struggles with speed and fast, applied pressure. I’m not saying it’s a sure thing, but Haye certainly has the right style to give him nightmares.
Good luck doing a “Top 6 Heavyweight Tourney”. One of the Klitschko brothers would have to retire. Besides, not a damn contender/belt-holder (Davey “WBA” Haye) could beat EITHER of them anyway.
PA
why is mitchell in there he has had only one fight at lightweight and he is not even the best in the u.k. john murray should be in there instead.
Don’t worry i’ve got a super 8 for light welter with all those guys in, so many in their i had to go with eight
