Ricky Hatton should come back, but he has to be realistic

By Samuel K Chatwin: With Ricky Hatton looking determined to make a come back in 2010 and names such as Juan Manuel Marquez being banded around. I can’t help but feel with the amount of weight he is going to have to lose and the possible psychological damage caused from his horrific knockout to Manny Pacquiao that this is a bad move.

Don’t get me wrong. I do not blame Hatton for wanting to get back in the ring, as I wouldn’t want to end my career flat on my back seeing stars. Although Marquez looked very ordinary against Floyd Mayweather Jnr, I still feel this is not a sensible comeback fight for Hatton. If Hatton is genuinely serious about making a comeback and giving it ‘one last go’ then he should have a warm up fight against a weaker opponent.

Not very exciting I know, but it is for the best. This would give him a chance to get his confidence back up, his fitness back up and more importantly give his fans a bit of hope that he hasn’t completely lost it. 20,000 fans traveled to Las Vegas for his last fight against Manny Pacquiao, they sang their hearts out all weekend ‘There’s only one Ricky Hatton’ a love rarely seen in boxing. Sadly what they witnessed was nothing short of a disaster and quite upsetting.

Hatton obviously was not in the same class as Manny and Floyd, but the fights still drew a lot of attention and a lot of great buzz for the sport, especially over here in England. I for one am all for him giving his career one last chance, but I want it done in the right way. The last thing his fans want is to see him embarrassed by Juan Manuel Marquez, which I’m sad to say, is probably what would happen….

I agree with the writer that he should get at least 2 warm-up fights and go back to his old coach.. Mayweather, Sr. did him no good.. he also has to have some training in defense and speed if he wants to go against JMM because, lets face it, JMM is one of the best counter puncher in the business..

    To Pale the Pug,

That was a nice comment you wrote there. Being a Hatton fan myself and having travelled from the UK to his last 3 fights in Vegas, it really is a special atmosphere and emotion and boxing will sorely miss Ricky and all that comes with him when he does retire.

RICKY HATTON DON’T NEED A TUNE UP FIGHT,HE HAS BEEN AROUND LONG ENOUGH TO FIGHT WHOEVER,WHENEVER,A GOOD 3 OR 4 MONTHS TRAINING CAMP AND THE HITMAN WOULD BE MORE THAN READY.
IF HATTON DOES FIGHT MARQUEZ NEXT IT WOULD BE ONE HELL OF A BATTLE WHATEVER THE OUT COME AND I DO THINK THIS WOULD BE FIGHT OF 2010.

Ricky should box a legend in his comeback fight. Not JMM but Ken Buchanan. It’ll be a real pick’em scrap!

I’ll agree, his fans are cool. They sing during the fights just like at soccer games. I always thought that was awesome and would give any boxer that extra boost he needs to stand up for the next round. And I always though hatton would need 1 or 2 warm up fights before fighting a top fighter again. Then again marquez is nearing the end of his carreer, he is like 38 now isnt he? These 2 fighters should fight 12 brutal, exciting, and bloody rounds and then retire in glory. If no tune up fight I think marquez would win by tko. With a tune up fight I still gotta go with marquez by U.D.

whats the point in a warm up fight, he had a “warm up” against malignaggi b4 his last fight and it didnt make any difference. he needs to start getting in shape now, he needs to be in the gym now long before a fight is even agreed so that when the training camp starts he is at least somewere close to 147, you cant lose that much weight in 9 weeks and still be strong. get in the gym, get your weight down then start talking about setting u a fight for big money against marquez or bradley even khan, if he does what he done against pacman(losing weight too quickly)he’ll get Ko again i think.

I agree with the writer 100%. Ricky may not be the same “HITMAN” that the fans loved. With the loss he suffered to Pacman, he may not yet have the confidence needed to fight a top caliber fighter like JMM. He would also be needing a lot of training & diet just to lose the extra pounds he gained. I believe that he’s reached 14 stones (196 lbs)now. Losing that extra 56 pounds might drain him physically.

JMM vs will be avery good fight but if Marquez is not available Tim Bradley will be a good show too.

  • del boy says:

i would like ricky to have a tune up fight as well but unfortunately thats not in his nature he will always want to scrap with the best win or lose thats hatton and thats why hes got an amazing following of fans because he is a pure fighter good luck hatton i think you will win marquez at 140

  • paper_champion says:

hatton, most overhyped fighter to come out of england, amir khan is the second ;)

  • GregDempsey says:

Marquez had a good bit of trouble keeping diaz off of him, I think Hatton is much more to deal with then Diaz. I think that Hatton should win at 140 unless he is shot, if he is shot, it wont matter if he takes a tune up or not. Shot is shot…but I dont think losing to Pac proves one is shot, and I see Hatton beating Marquez in 8.

  • Jason Alcairo says:

watching him rematch malignaggi might be an entirely different fight.Buddy McGirt had Paulie fighting with a more flat footed style than what he’s used since getting with his new trainer. It would be interesting to see if he would be able to catch and wear Paulie down again.

  • el tsunami says:

Marquez looked bad agaisnt Mayweather but everyone knows it was the weight! but when he faces Hatton..Marquez will weigh in 138/139, 3 pounds more than 135 so Marquez wont be that slow and he could take the punch! He took Mayweathers punches Pretty well its not easy fighting some one 15lbs heavier!

  • the Professor says:

Hatton need to face someone like Zab and then the Winner faces JMM. Yes let’s be realisticly here. Hatton need to fight a tune up fight first for fight JMM because it will be a loss again because of ring rust.

  • j says:

I agree with the article i would hate to see ricky comeback and lose, the trouble with Marquez is even if ricky wins (which is not out of the question but would be a big ask) he would not get the credit he deserves because marquez is coming off such a domination against floyd

I would love to see Ricky comeback and take a couple of junior welterweight titles, I think he could beat Bradley and Alexander,

I dunno what would happen against Kahn, but I think ricky would be better off pursuing him instead of Marquez

  • cholay says:

totally agree. ricky may need more than one fight though. i would suggest a facinating fight against his brother maybe?

  • Pale the Pug says:

    Samuel your a good man!

I agree 100%. He needs to build his confidence back up with a tune up fight. I think a rematch with Malanagi makes more sense right now since Paulie doesnt hit very hard or maybe even a Juan Diaz. i think both fights would generate some buzz and money for Hatton and would be a good gauge on where he still stands. The most important part of your article for me is the undeniable suport and loyalty the Hatton fans have for him. This wonderful sport will surely miss his fans enthusiasm and love when he retires. to be thats the best thing about Hatton, his fans.
