Prescott-Mitchell: Kevin’s elite performance
By Peter Wells: Last night Kevin Mitchell rose up from Super Featherweight to take on the man who only last year, knocked out Amir Khan in under a minute. Breidis Prescott was beaten last night for sure, but it was far from an easy ride for Kevin. In this fight I was expecting Mitchell to be knocked out inside 6 rounds. But I was wrong, and have no problem admitting it, Kevin proved he wasn’t fazed by Prescott’s power and kept in there with a natural Lightweight. I don’t see why anyone can say he didn’t win this fight, because he clearly did, and Scott, you just have to live with it, it’s called life, you went ecstatic when Ward beat Kessler, when he clearly was using his head in their, so let it be.
Kevin kept on the back foot, in the first looked more lively with his punches and countering most of Prescott’s attacks, then in the second he wasn’t throwing enough back, and was looking very poor as Breidis looked in full control. In the next round, Prescott got through a few times to the body, and momentarily shook Mitchell. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to watch the rest of the fight off you tube, due to a copyright claim by Frank Warren. So the rest of the fight is written from looking at a review from BBC Sport. In the fourth Mitchell made Prescott miss many times and started to get his range and was landing some decent shots, the left hook was becoming an unmissable shot for Kevin in the fifth and cut Prescott under his left eye from an accidental head butt. The sixth was more or less the same, and in the seventh Mitchell was easily avoiding the right hand, and landing his own sly left hooks. The eight was very even until the end where Kevin was able to land a very nice combination which captured him the round. Mitchell was running away now being clearly in front and Breidis was really struggling to catch the fleeing challenger. Mitchell ended the fight well putting in well timed counters, and keeping out the way of Prescott as he tried desperately to get a knockout which never came.
The final scores were 119-110, 118-111 and 117-111; I gave Prescott round 2 and 3 only and the 11th round even, to give Mitchell a clear 118-111 victory. I’m sorry for not giving a more detailed review but Frank Warren ruined that, so thanks for reading, and well done Kevin Mitchell.

WELL DONE KEVIN MITCHELL GREAT PERFORMANCE, I WAS A CRITIC OF KEVIN AFTER THE JOHANSSON FIGHT BUT NOW IM A BIG FAN. HE SOAKED UP ALL THE BOMBS AND BOXED RINGS AROUND PRESCOTT. UK FIGHTERS ARE THE REAL DEAL.
Excellent all round performance from Mitchell against Prescott and expect him to be able to kick on to a future World title challenge.
Mitchell was a hot prospect in his early pro career but despite an unbeaten record he has been treading water for a year or two until last nights performance.
Well, Peter, Mitchell is one of the UK’s most underrated fighters, I feel … yes, he gets a certain amount of recog, but never what his ability deserves. Since he has learned to calm down and use his boxing head, he has shown just how good he can potentially become.
I actually thought he would stop Bredis late on, but kevin seem a little gun shy from round 8 on, despite Bredis clearly looking a little more than arm weary to me. I have seen Mitchell throw many more combinations in a fight, but that just wasn;t hrere last night … he was very economical with his workrate … Shame really because if he’d of stepped it up from round 8 on, he could of been the first to stop Bredis.
Still, expect a lot more from Mitchell over the next year or two.
any 1 notice the ref hardly took his eyes well didnt take his eyes off presscott all the way through the fight there is no way there should have been a english ref in the ring last night at least a french ref or something
mitchell boxed brilliant,he will become world champion
Great win showed he has skill and good chin and great stamina
Alreadly showed he can punch and brawl
Hope he gets his shot for world title
Khan will take the plaudits; the spotlight – rightly or wrongly – is largely is. And, to be fair, Khan was impressive. But, for me, last night belonged to Mitchell. He was just marvellous in his dealings with the powerful Prescott, and I think his was the most dangerous opponent on the bill.
