Pavlik blasts out Espino in a 5th round stoppage

By Jim Dower: World Boxing Council/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-1, 32 KO’s) was far too strong for his over-matched opponent Miguel Espino tonight, taking him out in the 5th round with huge power shots tonight at the Beeghly Center in Youngstown, Ohio. Espino made a tactical mistake of trying to slug with Pavlik and was immediately taking tremendous shots in the 1st round.

Espino lost a point for a hit after the bell in the 1st round. In the 4th, Espino hit the canvas twice after running into big shots from Pavlik. In the 5th, still game and trying to slug it out with Pavlik, Espino was dropped for the third and final time. The bout was stopped at 1:44 of the round. Although Espino made it entertaining by trying to slug, he was doomed to be knocked out by standing directly in front of Pavlik and making it easy for him.

There is nothing to be impressed by Kelly Pavlik here. He did not fight someone good. If he fought Paul Williams like he was supposed to. He would have got knocked out. Kelly Pavlik may be a protected fighter.

pavlik will ko williams in 2rds williams is just a overrated giant who uses his stick arms to slap his oppenents then run and hold them williams has no chin he was hurt by martinez thats not a big puncher and was also hurt by margarito but it was just late in the rds and williams was fighting like a true b@tch slap, run, and hold

Williams-Pavlik is an intriguing fight (I’m a fan of both). Both fighters have great chins and contrasting styles. On the one side, Pavlik has great power and can throw decent combinations. BUT he is a tad slow and doesn’t deal well with fighters who don’t come directly forward. Lateral movement and active footwork gives Pavlik fits. On the other side, Williams is extremely fast and can throw ten punches combos from a variety of angles. BUT he tends to leave his hands down, and move in head first. His defence was horrible against Martinez, and was lucky to get a decision. He’s way too confident that his offensive skills will overcome his deficiencies. Needless to say, Hopkins would destroy Williams at this point — the Williams camp saying they would “retire” b-hop is the biggest joke I’ve ever heard.

    My two cents

PAVLIK IS A COWARD HE WILL FIGHT WILLIAMS NOW WHEN HE SAW HOW MARTINEZ GAVE WILLIAMS HELL. THERE WAS NEVER NOTHING WRONG WITH HIS HANDS. HE WAS JUST AFRAID TO LOOSE.

pavlick will destroy anyone who’s stupid enough to stand in front of him and slug it out!!!but fair play to espino he made it an entertaining fight.hopkins laid the blueprint on how to beat pavlick.i can’t believe he’s not in the super 6 tourney coz he’s basically unchallenged at middle.

Hopkins will beat Danny Green in my opinion. It will be Pavlik all over again.

Hopkins is like a bench mark for over-rated fighters… and Green is one of those.

maybe pavlik should go up wieght and fight danny green becuase hopkins will have no chance against danny green
