Paul Williams Interested in fighting Pacquiao – News
By Manuel Perez: Well, if Manny Pacquiao isn’t going to be fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr, next, he at least should take on a super talented fighter like interim World Boxing Organization light middleweight champion Paul Williams if Pacquiao is seriously interested in fighting a 154 pounder. In an interview at Truefan boxing, Williams said “I difinitely would like to fight Manny Pacquiao. He’s got a style where he likes to throw a lot of punches. I also like to throw a lot of punches. If they [Pacquiao want to fight me right now, I’m very willing to get it on.”
It’s looking like Pacquiao will choose to fight WBA light middleweight champion Yuri Foreman next. Pacquiao is itching to win another title, and I guess this is pretty much the easiest title grab out there. I have no idea why Pacquiao would want to fight Foreman, but I know I’ll lose respect for Pacquiao if he does. I don’t care if Foreman holds a paper title. If Pacquiao wants another title, he should go after the best fighter in the light middleweight division. I don’t consider Foreman to be the best light middleweight in the division. Do any of you? Anyone?
If you’re going to go after belts, why not face the fighter who is perceived as the best in the division and not the 2nd or 4th best? It’s like entering a track meet and instead of facing the top guy, facing some of the lesser racers for a ribbon. What good is it to win that trophy when it’s against slower racers? I wouldn’t want the ribbon if I knew I was getting it by beating lesser people.
Instead of going after another useless belt, Pacquiao should move back and redo that fight at super featherweight with Marquez, and then move to the lightweight division and take on the best fighter at lightweight, probably Marquez again, and try to beat him without controversy this time. I think Pacquiao would lose, but can still try to collect titles by going after Timothy Bradley, probably the best light welterweight in the division.
I’d respect Pacquiao if he could beat those guys. I still think it’s stupid to collect alphabet titles for the sake of just collecting them, but at least he’d be collecting them the right way by facing the best fighters in every division instead of the 3rd or 4th best. I don’t consider Cotto the best welterweight in the division. If I was to place him in the division I’d put him behind Antonio Margarito, Mayweather, Shane Mosley, and Andre Berto.
As for Foreman, I place him behind Paul Williams, Sergio Martinez, Cory Spinks, Sergeii Dzinziruk, Alfredo Angulo, Joe Greene and Kermit Cintron. In other words, I see Foreman as the 8th best fighter in the light middleweight division. He’s just lucky he fought Daniel Santos for the title and not one of those fighters. If Pacquiao wants to get a lot of respect in the boxing world, he should fight Paul Williams. So what if Pacquiao gets beaten? He would impress a lot of people by taking on Williams.

I’m sick and tired of hearing excuses from fans and boxers about height advantage or disadvantage! Do you think P-Will is the only tall welterweight in history?? Do you freakin homework and stop making excuses. Do you remember maurice blocker?? how about thomas hearns?? Do you also remember a 5-8 simon brown laying a 6-2 inch blocker on his back for the count. How about thomas hearns fighting Aaron pryor in the amatures? the same hearns and leonard would not even mention pryor’s name in the pro ranks. If your a fighter and someone is in your division you fight him! you can’t be the best unless you beat the best, and these guys are picking and choosing who to fight!
Why doesn’t Paul Williams just stay in the middleweight division where he belongs? the guy is 6’2″, weighs 165 on fightnight, has a longer reach than the Klitschko brothers and always calling out the 5’6 – 5’9 guys, so what if he can drain himself down in weight for the weigh in then pile it all back on in the 30 intervening hours, Williams is overrated – he lost to Carlos Quintana – and so what if he knocked him out in the rematch, maybe Quintana had an off night rather than everyone saying Williams had an “off” night !
De La Hoya was only KO by Hopkins and TKO only by Pacquiao. Get it!!!!!!!!
If Pac fights P-Will, and somehow overcomes the 8 inch height disadvantage, the 15inch reach advantage, Manuela Perez would come up with some excuse…weight drained, never that good anyway, he forget his protein shake, his foot was itchy, his nephew punched his crotch before the fight…blah blah blah.
Pacquiao career would end if he fights Paul Williams, because I think every boxing fan wants to see him and Floyd. But this article seems to say Paul is saying he would be willing to fight Pacquiao if he wants to fight him. Like I once said, who is Foreman, why fight a undercard fighter when Pacquiao is a Main Event fighter. If those belts mean that much to Pacquiao, fight the best of the, because he is consider one of the brst ever. As boxing fans, we have went through boxing when it was seem to be headed down but now, we have the chance to see matches that would help boxing out alot. Let the best ifght the best.
I don’t belive that Manny’s legacy will be tainted for not fighting a guy 8 inches taller than him. Like I say, not saying nothing bad about Paul, I just don’t think that 8″ in height is a fair call. I’m not thrilled with the Pacquiao camp wanting to weight drain fighters either. I don’t know alot about boxing, just started watching a few years ago. I don’t like the catch weight idea, i’m actually totally against it, fight welter weight, then come in there anywhere between 140 and 147. That is the one thing I don’t like about Pacquiao’s camp. I would nothing against anyone that refuses to give up 8″ height and 15″ reach.
As a kid, I had brother 3 years older than me, kicked the crap outta me 3 times a day, whether I needed it or not. I was no bad dude, but I was picking on guys his age, and winning, I take the stalky guys, the skinny guys, and the fat guys, but I knew there was no way I was gonna win with the tall ones. That was when I was 10 – 13 years old, at 48 I’m only 5″5′ myself, no way would go for someone 6″1′ without an equalizer. At 170, I’d mix it up with a 250 pounder, of course, that’s if I were still a fighting person. Common sense and adult hood moved me outta that game
MikeL your point is redunant because true fighters should fight the people in their weight division regardless of their physicality, if Williams is 6’1 and has an insanely long reach then thats not his fault, thats his natural physical advantage which you can’t blame him for. Lets take the heavyweight division for example when Haye fought Valuev. Haye gave up a foot in height and 9st in weight but he never complained because Valuev was the guy he HAD to beat in that weight division. Paciquiao’s legacy will be tainted if he carries on to avoiding certain fighters and weight-draining them.
Pacquiao vs Williams, oh yeah, come on people, get friggin real, Williams is 6’2″ with an 82″ reach, Manny is 5’6″ with a 67″ reach. Do the math. I have nothing bad to say about Paul Williams, but maybe by him being so tall, and fighting in the wealterwight is why he claims no one wants to fight him.
I can see boxers giving up 20 lbs, as long as they don’t need a step ladder to reach his opponent.
Weight is something that can be controlled (except by me, I’d love to drop about 35 lbs) but you can’t stretch or shrink. an 8″ height advantage is just entirely too much. I’m sure there probably have been fights in the past, but I doubt they were both top fighters.
even if pacquiao beats williams or even the heavyweight klitshco brothers, Manuel Perez will always write something against pacquiao.
I’ll be surprised if Manny Pacjuice fights an African-American any time in the future.
between margarito and mosley, mosley is better because he beats the man. Fair and Square. Between margarito and cotto that is ???????? because of the illegal gloves. AND between cotto and mosley, cotto is BETTER because he beats mosley. How can mosley be better than cotto. there is no logic here. oh i got it…. there is no logic in manuela ever since…… nothing at all. i got you manuel
Nobody should take Perez seriously,…….Ignore his article instead. He just want attention after all his prediction went wrong and always will.
Wow! I didn’t even bother reading this. Another article by Manuel Perez is always garbage. I actually just like reading the comments. Some of them are even more intelligent than MP articles…..
I don’t like both Mayweather fighting hatton and then Pacquiao fighting foreman its just to easy for those two guys … come on guys… give boxing some respect.
For once Manny is right this time maybe both Mayweather and Pacman should consider fighting Williams …
I won’t watch either fight if it goes through waste of money
@ SugarMan:
Oh, let’s not forget Hearns-Leonard II.
And by the way, did Pacquaio knock Oscar out? Well hell, had Osar not quit on his stool, who’s to say that Pac wouldn’t have been able to eventually knock him out. He was headed that way until they they waved the white flag.
Pacman is not only stronger but smarter than we think. He wont fight a 7 footer boxer. Thers no way he can win
Williams would be just too awkward for him…. he has 15 inches more reach than Pacquiao …. As good as Manny is, he would just get dominated against williams…. and probably would if Williams came down to welterweight too.
@ Mally J:
Sugar Ray Leonard fought Lalonde at a catchweight for his title. So yes to your question.
@ SugarMan:
Marquez was the best titlist Pac faced? How about when he battered Marco Antonio Barrera for the world featherweight title? Wasn’t MAB considered one of the top guys at that time? Ledwaba was the msot feared in the super bantam ranks, and you wouldn’t know who Chatchai Sasakul because I bet, you never followed the flyweight ranks back in the mid-90s.
Augustino, but Williams is a 154 pounder… although he mentioned before that he can make welter, I do not believe so (without being weight drained). Question is are we asking Pac to fight the best welters in his last two fights or are we asking him to fight the best junior-middle weight?
how many times do i have to tell you num nuts, pac man aint moving up another weight division
manuel perez has never satisfied a woman
Right, Pac should take on a real challenge like PBF is doing by taking on Matthew Hatton.
ZKO,
mayweather will not fight Mosley-Berto winner what more Pacquiao. These fighters will not be a viable opponents for Pacquiao, WIlliam is the guy to beat.
Perez I have to agree with you 100% with this article. Manny Pacquiao have a history of facing the weakest of title challengers. Marquez was the best titleholder that he faced in any division. Marquez, was also the fighter that gave him the most problems and I would have to agree with you Mr. Perez.
Manny will not be considered an ATG to me with his weak resume. Sure he beat Cotto, but it was a low confidenced Cotto that was knocked and won on a split decision in his last 2 fights. Mosley would have proven that Manny didn’t care or cherry picked. Again with Oscar DeLaHoya, the man was weight-drained to the point that it was dangerous to have fought any fighter, but did Manny knocked him out? No he didn’t.
Ricky Hatton was another fighter almost similar to Cotto who was recently knocked out and was at a lost for confidence, plus he was very slow like Cotto. Too predictable to say the least. Floyd Mayweather, Shane Mosley, Paul Williams or even Zab Judah are fights that would impress me if Manny were to fight either one and win.
I think Bob Arum and Freddie Roach knows not to match Manny with the aforementioned fighers.
Now from a historical point of view, I don’t see Manny beating too many of the past welterweight champions. Fighters like Tommy Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard, Wilfredo Benitez, Jose Napoles, Kid Gavilan, Donald Curry, Bruce Curry, Pernell Whitaker, Meldrick Taylor, Buddy Mcgirt, Hector Camacho, Julio Cesar Chavez, Jose Luis Ramirez, Edwin Rosario, Roger Mayweather, Floyd Mayweather, Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong etc, I can go on and on. Manny is not a great fighter. He’s an opportunist to me.
Williams at 154 would send Pac packing. After Hatton, Pac said he wanted 3 more fights, then retire. With two fights left, I’m not sure why he doesn’t consider winner of Mosley-Berto to unify the titles. Then he can go after Mayweather with even more clout. I’m also not sure why Mayweather is not interested in the winner of Mosley-Berto.
Perez,
Thanks for having faith in Pacquiao. Having to be considered an opponent of William (as you propose) that is sign of faith in our the greatest boxer of all time. Everybody does not want to fight william but you consider pacquiao so kudos to you.
Thanks again.
The only thing i’d like to see as much as Pacquiao-Mayweather would be either of them against Williams.
Perez,
Pacquiao needs to fight tune-up fight before he fights Williams. Becasue Williams is being avoided by so many A-fighter so Pacquiao has to climd-up one more division at 154lbs and then fight Williams. We know Pacquiao is great so I think you are right to fight William but mind you PAcquiao never fought on that division so please hold your horses it will come. But surely it will happen but maybe Pacquiao will clean-up and knock down everyone in the welter (including mosley and mayweather) before he climd at 154lbs.
It will happen don’t worry.
Pac is a cherry picker he hasn’t even fought at the true welterweight size limit which is 147 he always make the bigger man drain himself come down to fight him it’s all for money if he wasn’t a big name he would have to fight at the weight limit the guys his fighting agrees to it so i can’t blame him. Question for anyone who reads this, back in the days of Sugar Ray Robinson and all the way up to Sugar ray lenord did they have catch weights and didn’t a guy have to earn his shot at the champ by fighting his way to the top and did they have all these belts wbo, ibf, wbc and so on? I mean if he fight Formean and win he would go down as a great but how great or you if your fighting weak fighters, i believe great fighters should fight great fighters in order to be even mentioned of being great. His thoroughest fights were with Marquez and everybody after that were all guys coming off a loss except maybe for Diaz but who’s he and where is he it. This goes for Floyd to if he fight Mat Hatton i am going to question his greatness.
I thought you were going to stop writing if Pacquiao won… You dont keep your WORD.. Loser
Again Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….Marquez….
Manuel,
Mr Perez, You are not stirring the pot. You are poisoning the pot.
You are a poison to newcomers. Instead of hyping the fight, you are killing the interest of would be boxing viewers.
This has got to stop. be very careful of what you write next time.

why do you talk talk about pee boy Marquez in every single article ? your real brother?
Pacquiao should definitely fight Paul Williams because nothing means more to him than to earn the respect of Manny Perez and Liam Santiago.
I spoke to Pacquiao the other day and he told me that he would like Perez and Santiago tojoin his entourage because there is no one more knowledgeable than them in the sport. Plus, it just so happens that Team Pacquiao has 2 openings for a couple of fluff girls.
It will come to that…at this point Paul isn’t still a big draw just as perhaps Yuri Foreman but this is just a tune up fight. Top Rank is promoting both fighters and March is just around the corner so the choice of Foreman is logical…he’s a decent fighter because I thought he would be dismantled by Santos but it was otherwise.
