Pacquiao vs. Mayweather: Winners and losers

By Gibney Desmond: Whether you’re a Mayweather or a Pacquiao fan, you’ve got to be disappointed by the whole sordid affair of the botched negotiations, the foolish allegations, and the unending frustration that you probably will never be able to enjoy the undoubtedly brilliant show that could and should have been.

It has been suggested that this fight would have sold in the region of 3 million PPVs. At 60 dollars a shot that`s about 180 million. Add to this the various other money spinners inevitable with a huge event like this, and the figure rises to well over the 200 million mark. So a group of people are missing out on a mega payday, but their loss has got to be somebody else’s gain, right? Well let’s have a look:

Floyd Mayweather Jr.: Like it or not, Floyd has already lost his pound per pound crown. Now it seems he has also lost his only means of getting it back. If Floyd can`t get a crack at Manny, Manny will be remembered as the greater boxer, whether or not that is true. Worse, we`ll probably never know who actually was the better boxer.

Floyd, as we know, loves a big payday. Well, he has just seen the biggest one of his life walk right out through the door. No other match today could possibly generate as much interest or income as the Pacquiao Mayweather fight. And he has got to very carefully choose who he fights next, if he does not want to add to his reputation of being a cherry picker. He had to chance to prove he is the best, now that moment is gone. Now, more that ever there will always be doubts about Floyd`s greatness; whoever he fights next, win or lose. Add to that the fact he may end up facing an expensive day in court, things could hardly be worse for Floyd.

Manny Pacquiao: No doubt about it Manny was on a big-time, Vegas style roll. He was going from strength to strength. Fight by fight, his performances were ever more exciting, the crowds were bigger, louder and more fanatical, the purses richer and richer. The natural crescendo to all of this could only ever have been Pacquiao vs. Mayweather. This would have undoubtedly been a defining moment in boxing history; two of the greatest living fighters today in a bout that would surely be remembered by all, whatever the outcome. The highest possible point of Pacquiao’s career. Even leaving out the fact that his reputation has been indelibly tarnished, what have we got to look forward to now? Pacquiao vs. Foreman? That bout, as most right-minded people will tell you, is at best a one-sided affair. It is of precious little interest to anyone, and can do nothing whatsoever for Pacquiao. It will not make huge money or attract a wild crowd. If, as has been speculated, this is Pacquiao’s last fight, instead of hanging up his gloves with a glorious, spectacular crescendo, his last fight will be like a wet firecracker.

Boxing fans: In this affair I would say we are the biggest losers of all. When the fight was first announced how many of you said `Yes. Yes Yes. This is it. At last a fight that will equal Ali vs. Foreman. I will be able to tell my grandchildren about this one? `Everything was going smoothly. `Yes. `A stumbling point; `Damn!` A possible compromise, a glimmer of hope; `Yes` From there on it has just been frustration after frustration, and most of us are probably feeling a dose of well merited anger. `What are these people doing? Please just give us what we want. ` he gears of the machine grind down to a painful, pitiful halt. It is a sad day for boxing and for boxing fans.

All in all it seems that nearly everyone has lost out by what has happened, and can only blame themselves.

As Shakespeare may well have said; `Something is rotten in the state of boxing`.

    To all Mayweather fans:

“I am disappointed in the sense this fight will not happen,” Arum said. “I’m not surprised. I always knew Mayweather would kill it because he didn’t want it. He didn’t want to lose.”
Arum traced the history of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s mental state, which he said is coward’s mental state, adding Mayweather will never agree to take a tough fight where he stands any chance of losing reason many of best fights in the welterweight division never took place.

He points out how Mayweather walked away from a very lucrative rematch with Oscar De La Hoya in 2008. De La Hoya gave Mayweather a very tough fight in 2007.

“Floyd Mayweather walked away,” Arum said to USA Today. “Our guy was agreeable, Mayweather wasn’t. It’s not surprising. I always felt that he wasn’t going to do the fight. He knows Manny will beat him. Mayweather’s never stepped into the ring with a guy he had any question but that he was going to beat.”

“That’s why there’s never been a (Shane) Mosley, there’s never been a (Antonio) Margarito, there never was a (Miguel) Cotto, and there’s no Pacquiao. Floyd Mayweather is a coward. He will never fight anyone that will remotely give him a tough fight. Here’s a guy who, the rematch with (Oscar) De La Hoya was a huge fight, it would’ve made millions and millions, and he walked away from it.. .. I’m not disappointed in the sense that I always knew it was going to be this way.”

Mayweather killed the whole deal!!! He never wanted to fight the real deal!

pac haters and mayweather lovers dont want to see reason. all they hear is the bs coming from the mayweather’s and delahoya: “he’s on steroids!”, “he’s afraid of needles, dont want drug test!”

get your facts straight. initially, pacquiao agreed to all the demands of mayweather, yes ALL THE DEMANDS, even blood testing, which is not required. you should have seen arum’s face after he talked to manny, he’s so happy he cant get his smile off his face, his eyes were shining $$, he thinks the deal is as good as done. when mayweather was told pacquiao agreed to everything he was silent for a few days. after that he began saying the bloodtest should be olympic style blood testing. he finally got the pac to say no.

manny agrees to blood testing, what he does not want is the olympic style testing which is “as much as they want, anytime”. they can take blood everyday even until a minute before the fight and you cant do anything against it. manny is avoiding what happend to his first fight with morales where his blood was taken a day before the fight and he believes it affected his performance(this is what mayweather is trying to achieve).

in my own opinion bloodtest before the fight is moot. fighters can take anything they want after the bloodtest. what is important is the test just after the fight, if a fighter used drugs it will not go away right after the fight. thats the definitive bloodtest and manny suggested it himself.

  • blackbert says:

Pacquio is a coward! Floyd’s father thinks he may be using something so he sues Floyd. Paulie M. said he thinks Manny is on something but Manny will fight him; this action defies all logic and reason. Him and his people know he can’t beat Floyd. Floyd weight is always 146lb. He’ll fight Paulie who accues him outright or move to 154lbs, but only wants to fight his real opponent in court. What’s wrong with this picture?

  • Alvin says:

It ain’t for money. It ain’t for glory. It ain’t for pride. It ain’t for the crown. IT’S FOR RESPECT.

NOW tell me. Who got RESPECT. Both in and out of the Ring. I better ask their previous opponents on this.

  • Alvin says:

Who is the most loser of this fight? Is it MP or PBF?
Who needs the money more to pay debts? Who needs the fame right now to be famous? and who needs to prove and to show he is the P4P boxer.

  • Alvin says:

When PBF left the boxing ring. It didn’t matter or say it was not a big loss for boxing. But when MP wanted to retire. Everybody was clamoring not for him to retire. HMMM

  • lex_fugitive says:

Manny wanted to know what penalties he would face for failing a drug test and if a dirty test would be kept secret from the public. Yep, makes me think Floyd is scared too.

  • monico says:

floyd, you better rest in peace.

  • rrr says:

Does anybody wonder why the NSAC is just quite about this whole fiasco. Floyd undermined their existence by telling the whole world that their PED testing is USELESS. Floyd bluffed his way into the negotiations with the blood testing and Manny didn’t buy it. Now both of them will be wondering what would have been.

manny in the top 5 of all time ha ha ha ha ha , get real might just make it into top 100. armstrong , ike williams and duran would slaughter pac.

well it came from some of the top boxing expert like bert sugar, not from you!

  • missterry says:

uhhhmmm!…to all mayweather fans, saying that manny demand this manny demands that, well i got a queastion for you,If you are in manny place as a #1 boxer, would you be like a trained dog and do what ever your master tells you to do,its not a matter of drug abuse or anything else, its a matter of pride, manny wont be told what to do by some number 2 boxer, manny is the captain of the ship, hes not that stupid to be told to do what they want and how they want it and where they want it(drug test)…paq doesnt need this fight to have more money, hes wealthy enough, they could have agreed on some drug test in a private way but mayweather sr,being a loud mouth coused m jr some millions by talking without thinking

  • walker says:

People need to realize that Pac is a great fighter and i am taking nothingfrom him but he knows that he is not that much better than any of the other smaller fighters that Money have made look bad. Pac is looking to take a lesser fight and money is looking to get paid. Floyd knows he can win that fight and Pac knows he could lose. He just think the money is not worth his career

  • Zambo says:

To the Floyd Mayweather fans, first and foremost, I am a Filipino and definitely a Pacquiao fan. But to me, and both my Father and Brother, think that Manny will lose to Floyd.

  • walker says:

I read some of the dumb stuff that some of u Floyd haters have o say and its funny. Like he don’t want to fight and he being rediculus with he blood test. Lol, i can’t help but to laugh. It,s funny how he has excepted everything that manny have thrown at him like gloves, money split, ring size, and the 10 million overweight fee and as soon as he said blood test the figh was over. The match is set up for Pac but Pac knows he can’t beat floyd or the needle so he is coming up with every excuse he can to take on a lesser opponent while Money is just waiting and hoping he deal gets done. Still funny right

  • YETI says:

all i know is that i would never refuse a blood test for that kind of money, pacroid has affairs, then decides to sue floyd for defamation of character and to protect his honour thats truly hypocritical

  • manuel says:

its Mayweather’s and GBP i blame for the failure of the fight. (MY PET DUCKer likes to run around like mayweather.)

I wanted to see this fight badly but not to the extent of libeling PAQ and including PAQ’s country of birth with it. How could this loud mouth say that the Philippines is the best source of PED’s. Is he that dumb not knowing what a 3rd world country means. PAQ lawsuite will make less money than the fight (but millions is still involve). know I dont care about the fight. Moving on will be the best option for PAQ. IF they agree to fight PAQ great but continue your lawsuite.

  • Robert says:

Floyd let’s get it on! Manny has step on the plate! No more excuses.Just go by the rules and fight!Let the commission decide what to do regarding testing not you.You deal it 5mins after the fight if you were cheated.Do no twist the scenario that Manny is backing out on the fight. He already challenge you even he been just finish a battle with Miguel Cotto last month and your fight was already finish last Sept. Many is now running for congress in May even though he is very busy he just made himself available just to have a fight as early as March so that you will no excuses that he is running away from you.You have a heart of a fighter and a champion why listen to Richard and Errebe you decide it’s $4OM purse guarantee for 1 fight it doesn’t come overnight it will only come if you fight Manny. You always brag the your the no.1 so prove it.Give the fans a good fight!Don’t be a Bully. The fight will be held on your hometown Nevada why be bothered that you will be cheated.Manny is willing to take 3 test and the most important is after the fight. If you want you put a Nevada official 24/7 on Pacquiao’s to check him if he using illegal substance. You came in boxing the same weigh at the same age at 16.While Manny is on Professional Boxing and you are on Amateur Boxing you told this on Skysports interview.so why make false accusation and trash talk.If Manny will also ask you to take a blood test in General Santos City Philippines will you agree? You have the advantage in height, reach, weight and hometown so why being so scared. This is the fight of the century!Listen to your heart not to this genius advisers that when you get old they will not be on your side.Go Go Go!Dont be a coward!Your getting old! No more excuses floyd you are now cornered!

Did it not occur to you people the real losers are WE, the fans. What do these 2 athletes got to lose? They won millions out of fame given by their fans. What did we get in return? BS! Both camps are very much indulged in busine$$. Shame on them.

i think manny should fight the winner of shane and berto that would be a fight or he should give my man marquez another chance we all know marquez beat twice.

  • Combs2212 says:

The losers are all the fans who follow boxing, pay the crazy pay-per-view fees and check the boxing forums, Manny, Floyd, Arum, GoldenBoy, … if this fight does not happen

The true winner is : UFC president DANA WHITE

if they dont fight, boxing will never recover and to be honiest it shouldnt after the abortion of a fight compromise.

  • Mike Litoris says:

    Nice,

  • fatal18 says:

Floyd is a false representative of boxing. He should retire again and stay retire to realize his future beyond boxing… which is nothing.

Pacquiao legacy will live on. He continue his school and went to college. He is involved in so may businesses and prover for the poor. He will run for politics and even if failed he will continue competing in politics to serve hi people.

For Floyd, what’s beyond boxing? Nothing!

  • JC Hubo says:

great article. It’s un-beneficial at best to both fighters/

  • neukid says:

I think Floyd jr is not ready yet to fight Pacman and put his “undefeated” in jeopardy. I think the fight will happen late in 2010 after Floyd had another tune up fight possibly with Mosely or Berto.Or Mathew Hatton?

  • instinct says:

hey BNB – i have a question for you, before you make a comments. When Mayweather start to fight what is his weight? he start at 106 lbs. and then go up to 154 lbs. when he fight Oscar. Manny start at 106 lbs. sometimes year 98′ and he is fighting at 147 lbs. now. When Mayweather fight Hatton and he cannot loose weight, what he did? he ask Hatton to go higher so it will match his weight. Tell me now who is the real cheater and using stroids? Mayweather is definitely using steroids also or drugs enhancement… but it will never forget on the history of boxing that he cheat and always cheat. His legacy will remember as a cheater because of what he did. Mosley/Cotto/Williams dare him to go to the ring, this is the same weight and strength, what he did? he avoid them. A cheater is always a cheater, Pacman don’t need this fight in some writer says on their blog… American people live in material things and they only look for “MONEY & Material THINGS”. But remember, there are still few who live with dignity and respect. Mayweather need this fight because he don’t have money and he need to pay his car loan and IRS taxes. He has a gambling habbit that he need to support. I will not tell you what kind of property Pacman has, here in the U.S. and in the Philippines, why? because it will blow your eyes and mind. And people will be jealous again. It can support his family for the rest of their life… That is not fiction, that is the fact… Mayweather has no money and has no reputation, Family criminal records and debt is what he has… opposite direction for both fighters, one is decent and one is ghetto…

  • BNB says:

If Floyd is Cherry picking then what is the Pacman doing. The both fought the same poeple in the last 3 fights except for a damaged Cotto.

Maquez, Hatton, and Oscar are all common opponents. Floyd dominated JMM while Pacman struggled.

Both Hatton and Oscar were undefeated when Floyd beat them. Manny in the view of Manny was more devastating against Oscar and Hatton, but what you fail to realize is that Floyd is a different fighter, he wins rounds and if the KO comes it comes. Pacman on the other hand is a KO artist who looks for the KO and takes more risks. Pacman take more risks because he can’t out box his opponents like Floyd can.

I think Floyd is more dominant but Pacman being a more exciting fighter and KO artist is more devastating. Does that mean Pacman is better? NO.

  • z says:

Absolutely agree, there are no winners. Pac will be seen as doing everything in his power to avoid taking blood tests within 30 days of the fight and therefore be viewed as a fraud by the general public (regardless of what his fans may think) and floyd will continue to add to his reputation that he ducks top fighters to keep his record perfect.

The only way floyd will be able to redeem himself is if he fights the mosely/berto winner (and im betting he wont) and the only way pac will be able to is if he gives random blood tests within 30 days of one of his fights(im betting that wont happen)

My guess is that pac will retire into the sunset of politics after beating yuri or paulie and his legacy will forever be tarnished. And Floyd will continue to hand pick fighters who wont even give him a challenge (if he fights the shane/berto winner he will gain some cred and make some money but nothing like he couldve made with this fight)

These 2 had the opportunity to go down in history as two of the best, its a shame but now it appears that both have lost that opportunity. Both camps (like both fan bases) are so entrenched right now in blaming the other guy that neither is willing to give an inch but in the end both will lose and so will boxing.

  • Nathan says:

Hey BNB you are completely wrong. PAC will not have a tarnished reputation because he never refused to fight or make excuses in his entire career.

Furthermore, many people even today are already starting to realize that Manny being # 1 would never allow anyone beneath him to decide the rules of war.

    You’re wrong, period.

  • Phoocquiao says:

Very well written. I think I shed a tear.

  • Action says:

Mayweather is a great fighter with a lot of skills, and I doubt that anyone will ever question that fact. However, Manny Pacquiao is truly exciting and has just kept upgrading his performance level, fighting whoever is put in front of him, and winning big time, without the ‘cherry picking’ strategies of Mayweather. Manny is also a very respectable fighter with, what appears to be, great morals, honor and very conscious of his character. This is more than I can say for Mayweather, who is a braggart and loves to run his mouth, both about the inferiorty of his opponents as well as him money, which regardless of his talents, I find offensive. I think Mayweather is very worried about being beat up by Pacquiao, and throwing out high pre-fight demands is the only way he can muster to deal with his fear.

  • mark says:

Floyd’s new demand is a RANDOM SEMEN TESTING from Manny.

  • jesmedhytz says:

yeah i agree,i am a loser too like you,i suggest PBF to retire again and come back (for the 2nd time) when the pacman hangs his gloves.

  • Robert says:

If Floyd tells he wants an even playing field and wants USADA to take the random testing which we all know for the fact that it has close relation with Oscar delahoya and Golden Boy.Maybe try to hold the event in General Santos Philippines and do the random blood testing there also. What do you think will Mayweather will tell to the public.I think he will not be also in favor of random blood test.by the way Mayweather live in Nevada which the fight will be held.Mayweather has very loud machine gun mouth.he uses it as to harrash and bully his opponent. But this time you don’t need this things specially if it $40M megafight and you have all the advantage from being undefeated, special skills, height, reach and weight on the day of the fight. So why being coward! No more talking Floyd just go with the rules. It’s your hometown but if you see on the survey.magazines and every boxing awards this year or even the US Academy agrees that Pacman is the Fighther of the year!So you must prove them wrong and not this kind of all talk and no proof style. You decide not Errebe or Golden Boy!Pls go on with the fight!

  • BNB says:

I don’t think you question Floyd’s greatness. He is great fighter and 20 years from now People will say Floyd beat Oscar and Hatton first, when they were undefeated. Floyd beat Oscar at 154, while Pac beat a deyhydrated 147 lbs Oscar. Floyd won’t has the question of steroids looming in the minds of fans.

In 20 yrs from now will people understand Pacman’s refusal to take the most advanced test available?

Lawsuit or not question marks will remain when it comes to the Pacman. Win or lose the lawsuit question won go away, but infact more questions will come out as it is always the case in court cases.

All Floyd has to do is beat some solid welter to regain his P4P status, mainly the winner of Mosley vs Berto which GBP will deliver to Floyd in a silver platter. Floyd will have to take a tought fight, but he has the abilities to win it.

I don’t think GBP will serve Mosley to Pacman instead of Floyd. Berto is managed by Al Haymon who is also Floyd’s manager.

Pacman will be the biggest loser in the long run because people will always have doubts due to his denial and so many different excuses to avoid random tests. The excuses and inconsistency are facts, they are all over the internet.

The fans lost a big fight, but there are other boxers out there and boxing is just a sport. Other fighters will come up and get us excited.

  • Andre00 says:

We all lost, but i wouldn`t point any finger, blaming Manny or Floyd, i think once an event can generate so much $$$ it will be bigger then just up to Manny and Floyd, and in Vegas? hahah Vegas is one dirty city and we do not know what happens behind closed doors. so i blame none of the fighters, this is bigger then them.

  • anon says:

no problem as long as manny hands the deal now…
