News – Khan could be facing Zab Judah next

By William Mackay: World Boxing Association light welterweight champion Amir Khan (22-1, 16 KO’s) could be facing veteran Zab Judah (38-6, 26 KO’s), according to news from The Mirror. Apparently, Khan’s promoter Frank Warren is looking at the 32-year-old Judah as a potential next opponent for Khan in early 2010. Khan also could fight on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight on March 13th.
No matter how fast Khan’s hands are and how good of a boxer he is, he’d be in serious danger against the likes of those aforementioned fighters. This is why it came to no surprise to me that Judah’s name was mentioned as an opponent for Khan. Based on Khan’s history of fighting older, some say ‘washed up fighters’, like Marco Antonio Barrera, Michael Gomez and Gairy St. Clair, it seems logical that Khan would continued to be steered towards the old ones.
It’s kind of like taking an old lion, taking his teeth and claws out and then putting in with a young lion who has problems of some sort. Judah would be the perfect opponent for Khan to fight. Let’s see, Judah has lost four out of his last nine bouts and hasn’t beaten a top fighter in the past four years since his stoppage win over Cory Spinks in 2005.
Judah has been beaten by Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey and Carlos Baldomir in the past three years, making him the perfect opponent for Khan. It might not look good Khan facing yet another older fighter, but it sure beats getting knocked out in the 1st round like he was last year when Khan was put in with a live lion with real teeth and claws in the form of Colombian knockout artist Breidis Prescott. Khan has rebounded from that loss with four straight wins over Oisin Fagan, Barrera, Andriy Kotelnik and Dmitriy Salita. Granted, none of those fighters have any real power, but they’re all decent fighters in their own way.
A win over Judah would buy Khan and his handlers some time to figure out what they want to do with him. He’s going to have to fight interim WBA light welteweight champion Marcos Maidana at some point if he plans on holding onto the title. However, taking on Judah, rather than Maidana, would give Khan another payday before he has to face the question of whether to risk all and take Maidana or vacate the title, like many boxing fans and writers think he’s going to do.
Judah may not be as much of an easy fight as some people think. Judah is a good six to eight round fighter and still has good hand speed and power during that part of the fight. However, if you take Judah past the eight round point, he seems to run out of gas entirely and end up losing. Khan would have to stay away from exchanges with Judah until it was late in the fight and safe to throw punches without worry.

Clearly most on here do not have the faintest idea about boxing.
Khan is the most overhyped joke. His fans are boxing novices, girls and old ladies etc. This due to the fact that he gets endless marketing for his nonsense claims. Allow me to elucidate to put some of those claims to bed:
* Khan has the weakest chin in boxing – Gomez was never a huge puncher and was old and stepping up in weight, yet floored Khan and hurt him. I watched Gomez v Johannsen at superfeather around the same time and Gomez never once rocked him despite giving him endless shots, and Johannssen could not even take the power of a European level contender at superfeatherweight. Says it all. We do not need to mention Limond, pillow punching lightweight. Then theres Prescott, Mitchell, moving up weight still took his shots and outboxed him with ease. Khan on the other hand made Prescott look a concussive puncher and could not even withstand his jab. Moreover, he is so fearful he never dared to rematch him. Lets be honest, Prescott is a very poor fighter, it just puts Khan into context.
* Now Khan says he has bounced back from the loss. But by doing what. Fighting who? Fagan? What a joke, a club fighter at best, and thats being kind. Then Barrera, 35 year old who could not handle ordinary fighters in his two previous outings (just watch the videoos on Youtube), and then Barrera turned up and could not even make lightweight, the smaller guy moving up, says it all really about his condition. Then Khan selected Kotelnik, since it suited him and railroaded everyone into getting the title shot. On what basis? Why did he desrve it? He never proved himself against anyone, and all of a sudden he was given thetop spot. Kotelnik does the basics well, has a good chin, BUT has flat feet and zero power. Hence Khan was an obvious winner. The reson Kotelnik beats Maidana is because Kotelniks cin is very good, he took Witters shots, and absorbed Maidana who cannot box at all but is a big puncher indeed.
* THen we got Salita. Joe public told he is an unbeaten great pmsl. Look at Salitas record, can you honestly say you know any of the names he has fought? No, thought not. He was given the manadatory (goodness knows how) but boxrec had him nuber 63 light welter prior to the fight. I watched him fight a superfeather club fighter in Campos, a real ordinary smaller guy with no boxing skill or power, and Salita got backed up during exchanges though won easily on points since he a a much bigger guy and better boxer. But is shows the level at which Salita has operated, and even at that level he did npt look good.
* Now before Salita fight Khan was saying, ”no way am i going to give up this belt etc” Usual trash that he espouses. So why wil he vacate? Well because he does not want to fight anyone that can barely punch. He does not want to take on Maidana, Ortiz, or even lesser punchers like Alexander, and will not consider all round skillful fighters with less power like Bradley. No, Khan wants Khan with zero power, or smaller older men (rumour has it he wants Morales to come back), or complete nobodies, or preferably a combination of all 3.
* The usual excuse is that Khan is only 23 etc so let him take it easy. Well Alexander is younger than Khan, so why does he not duck fighters. He is on record saying he will fight any of the top 5 LW. Why will Khan not fight him.? Or Maidana, or Bradley, or Ortiz,? Because he would get stopped each time. The bandwagon would yet again come to a halt.
*Khan gets the press by making remarks like I want mayweather, Bradley etc. The reality is he will vacate and fight Pauli Mallinaggi more than likely. Why, because Mallinaggi will be good exposure cos he talks the talk etc, and Khan knows Mallinaggi is the weakest puncher of all, he only has a jab, and has more pins in his right hand than a DIY shop. The guy has no power at all.
* One of Khans numpty freinds is on here saying Khan takes Mosleys power? lol. Listen cut the nonsense you plonk. I am not interested in what you claim Khan does in the gym, on the pads or insparring. Lets see him take a fighht that will test his chin and then see. It is obvious from his interviews that Warren has less influence in who Khan fights now, and Khan says he decides who he will fight, yet he seems kenn, along with Raoch to duck anyone with a bang. Why, they both know he cannot take anything more than a padded jab since it will floor him.
*What really makes me laugh is how he fools joe public. Speaking before the Salita fight, Khan stated ”everyone was asking me why are you taking such a dangerous fight with a great fighter like Salita” and he [Khan] said ”because I dont want the easy route, I only want to fight the great and the best”

forgot to add, alex ariza told me khans got a very good chin the reason he looked bad in his earlier fights was because of his weak legs and they working on that, he went on to they wanted to develop huge calve muscles like pacman to withstand the punches. Ive been stateside to the wildcard gym and oh boy its true what freddie says theres no one can knock down either khan or pacman, mosley sparred with khan for 4 rounds, although his punches werent affecting mosley alot (imo) mosley could not land even 1 shot on him. You think hes quick on telly, at ringside your jaw will drop when you see him move. Im going again on jan 20, rashad at the gym was saying berto is gonna be sparring with pac and khan, wouldnt miss that for the world!
Lets try and wrap this argument up, afterall all I aid was that this fight would be a good chance for Amir to shut up some critics as Judah is a harder pucher than his last 4 opponents and has fought on world level it was positive for Khan if anything but I got jumped on by Khans fans.
Basically this is a good fight for both, Khans been slated for not fighting anyone who can punch so he’ll want to change that and everyone says Judah is washed up so he will feel that this is his last chance saloon.
As Judahs past his best and Khan is yet to peak I find it tough to call, on paper Khan but you never know which Zab will turn up. I knew straightaway that Khan would bet Barrera, afterall he was a 35 year old featherweight fighting at lightweight, a bad match wherea Judah has fought at light-welter and welter all his career.

Zab judah has been well washed up since 2006 and hasnt beaten a world class fighter for 4 years and was last a lightwelterweight about 5 years ago. He was due to fight matthew hatton recently so thats all we need to know about the level hes at nowadays.

I wouldn’t put Khan anywhere near a puncher like Judah who has been fighting much bigger men than Khan. Although he has many defeats, they have been against the very best and I think he will be a major threat at light welter. Khan’s team will want someone like Malignaggi who’s no real threat although talk of Castillo is just plain ridiculous.

When was the last time Judah made 140 ? Years ago, maybe 5 ? No chance he can be strong again at 140, which is why Warren would allow Khan to face him.

My view is that Khan is a good technical boxer. P4P probably one of the quickest in the game, but he has flaws, and NOBODY can say he is a perfect boxer.

Judah is a Veteren who gave Cotto all he could handle before multiple low blows stopped Zab in his tracks. I think Khan would deal with Judah but this is the perfect fight for him at this stage.

The “win”? against Barrera was a disgrace!!!! The British Boxing Board shamed themselves and boxing allowing that fight? to continue after the clash of heads!!! Barrera tried to continue for 4 rounds with blood streaming into his eyes!!! Shameful! Why not a Prescott rematch first?? That would seem to be the most logical fight for Khan and a good display against him would do much to restore Khans credibility! Warren pulling the strings all the *U£k!ng time making money out of nobodies like Judah!! Prescott has lost his last 2, so wher is the big punching when he needs it?? A retirement plan should be put in place for Khan after he has beaten Mayweather or Pacman. I have been involved in the boxing game since I flew over from my homeland in 1948, I have trained studied and contributed myself in the square ring as we called it in the 50s and 60s. You strictly pointed out statistic barriers that only a trainer of the two could know. It’s impossible to gammon it otherwise. You point becomes valid after that I’m afraid. Boxing to you must be two uneducated persons slugging around a concerning environment. Need I say more?

Judah is a dangerous choice for Khan, because Judah is still quick; has above average power; has reasonably good boxing skills, and is experienced. If Zab is sufficiently motivated, and is well conditioned, he will knock out Khan.
