Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Don’t count Manny out

By Jamie Hooper: I don’t think there has been a fight in the last ten years that has created as much excitement and anticipation as this one. After Christmas and new year are out the way. The pound for pound number one and number two will start training for a fight that could reinvigorate the whole boxing scene. After Floyd Mayweather’s easy win over Juan Manuel Marquez, my initial thoughts where that Mayweather would handle Pacquiao in a similar masterful fashion. As time has gone by, my opinion has started to change. In Manny Pacquiao, Mayweather has a lot to deal with.

Speed, power, aggression and relentless pressure are all things Mayweather has had to cope with before, but not all from the one fighter.

There is also something about the manner of Freddie Roach which suggest that Mayweather is in for a tough fight. Roach is beaming with confidence, and looks energized and cant wait to start working with Manny too create the plan that will give Mayweather his first defeat. Roach has said that he wants to get Manny in the gym early, as his plan for beating mayweather involves a lot of changes to Mannys current style.

Roach has stated that Mayweather’s body is fragile-having had shoulder injuries. Roach has indicated that he will be instructing Manny to attack Mayweathers shoulder, especially when Mayweather shoulder rolls. This, if it works will be one way of taking one of Mayweathers most often used defensive moves away from him.

I am trying to point out here, that this fight wont be a foregone conclusion for Mayweather. I do still believe that mayweather is the favorite for this one. I still see too many defensive flaws in Pacquiao style. Cotto managed to exploit these to some extent by landing solid jabs through the guard. Although to Mannys credit he looked bullet proof to most of Cottos attacks.

This fight will test both fighters and as such will cement the legacy of one of them forever. Pacquiao has already achieved enough to ensure his place in the hall of fame. You could say Mayweather has too. But we all want to see Mayweather being properly tested, and Pacquiao could be the man to do it.

mayweather will gone in boxing after he fight pacquiao.their fight is on!! in march 13 2010 but i am not excited cause i know what will really happen that pacquiao will beat that mayweather in just a few rounds cause mayweather got no skills in boxing pacquiao got many skills skills look what happen to cotto after his fight againts paccquiao he got bloody face. mayweather cant believe how strong and fast pacquiao is that is why he thinks pac use steroids and drugs

  • lightspeed says:

I cannot believe you are such neanderthals. The fight will no longer push through, not unless Mayweather wants the money that bad. Mayweathers camp only pushed for the blood testing because pacquio’s camp wanted a $ 10 million fine for every pound Maywether was going to exceed, thus the conclusion that mayweathers main strategy was to come on the ring exceeeding in pounds the same way he did with Marquez. In other words, when Mayweather lost that leverage when the penalty clause occured and the blood testing is just an excuse so he can withdraw from the fight. It is utter stupidity and moronic for a person to prove and discredit somebody and yet not to agree on a test after the fight when you shall get the same result before the fight. Matweather is known for engaging only fights where his percentage of winning is high. And since the overweight card could no longer be played, he wants out because his high percentage of winning shall be lower. Mayweather is a champion because he always plays it safe. His a coward and quite frankly just a plain old businessman who’s scared of taking high risks. His not a champ, his a wimp. His not a warrior, his just a one big money making scam.

  • robert pulson says:

pac gave blood 14 days before hatton fight, so that superstitious claim seems like b.s! floyd has agreed to smaller gloves and the absurd 10 million per pound. lets get the 24/7′s going and the needles ready. p4p status is at stake, can’t wait!

  • Antolduvai says:

If you are a boxer, meaning that is your profession. How would you choose to settle a dispute with a rival? Especially one that questions your skill, ability, and honesty to your profession. You would fight that person, to settle the dispute, answer the call, and assert/prove your prowess. That is the legacy and path of a Champion boxer. I am a fan of Manny. That is what he has always done. Now, facing the biggest challenge of his career. He opts to pull out of the fight and instead of taking on the rival in the RING, he chooses to take him on in COURT. That feels, sounds and is most certainly suspect. I have never had reason to question Manny for anything other than his aggressive style that can appear reckless until now. This is not a question or religion, cultural heritage, or personal beliefs. Athletes are subject to a variety of conditions and mandates and they are ALL asked to comply. He is no different. Some athletes compete on Holiday’s or while they are fasting due to religious observances and they don’t have the privilege to blame poor performance on these special circumstances. A Champion rises up to great challenge and adversity to overcome or at least compete. A Champion doesn’t withdraw, retreat and pursue libel.

  • flip says:

    Manny must be on steroids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cmon guys, be real. He agrees to a blood test immediately after the fight. You think the steroids will just vanish?? Manny is a spiritual fighter. Nobody believes in god anymore but this guy does. If you know filipinos you would understand the people can be very superstitious. His mental condition needs to be as strong as his physical condition in order to dominate. If he believes he will weaken by giving blood soon before the fight, guess who is at an advantage? What will Mayweather want next? For Manny not to pray in the ring? Manny believes in praying.. so if giving blood before the fight is not harmful, I guess not praying wouldn’t hurt his spirit either…. Mayweather just needs to man up and fight this warrior.

  • Stewie says:

Even if Pacquiao agrees with the terms of the drug testing, you can be sure that the Mayweather camp will come up with yet another excuse not to fight.

  • pacman says:

why cant the supporters of Pacman use their brain? What will a blood test of 5mm do to his mentality when mentally and physically he will end up with 50million. There are two answers to Manny’s ducking of blood test. It is either he doesnt want to fight Mayweather or he is surely on dope.

  • Real Student of Boxing says:

Mayweather is far to technically sound for the whirlish dervish Pacquiao, who has no defense to speak of. Mayweather is the most accurate puncher in the history of boxing and a devastating counter puncher. In short Pacquiao’s style is taylor made for Mayweather to destroy, and Pacquiao could barely beat and slower and less accurate counter puncher like Marquez. By the way don’t forget that Pacqiao was knocked out twice at 130 pounds and is now fighting at 147. If you are clean there is now way that you would not submit to give up 5milliliters of blood before the fight. In fact Pacquiao gave up blood for Nevada State Athletic Commission HIV test 10 days before the Hatton fight. So much for the fear of giving blood while in training excuse. He also can’t be afraid of needles because he has several tatoos. For a guy to give up 50 million dollars over a minor drug test is mighty suspicious. The financial people (Bob Arum) for Pacquiao agreed to it and the athletic people (Freddie Roach) that know what Pacquiao is taking refused. Usain Bolt the same test the day before he shattered the 100 meter record and so did Michael Phelps.

  • heavy G says:

Phoocquiao: If you actually believe that Pacquiao will focus on punching PBF in the shoulders, then there is no help for you. This is just another Roach mind game. Roach is a shrewd guy and now that his every word is considered boxing strategy gospel, he uses his pulpit to try to influence the other fighters camp. Do you really think that Roach is so foolish as to tell everybody will be his REAL strategy for the match with Mayweather?

To answer your question, Frazier beat Ali by hitting him with about 200 left hooks to the liver and face, and not by hitting him on the hip. Ali used less movement in the first fight because he thought Frazier would be easy pickings for him. In the next two fights Ali danced and clinched his way to victories.

  • jesmedhytz says:

this mega-fight will not happen. . no pacman-mayweather fight in mar 2010. . cuz of pbf’s steroids issue. . sorry folks, better promote pacman-shane or pacman-Yuri, maybe these fihters has no excuses.

  • jesmedhytz says:

you said pac can do it..DO WHAT? if you say to KO pbf. . yes i agree, his trash-talking-mouth will kiss the canvass first before pbf sr.will “say enough dear son”, pacman has taken steroids. . he he and i doubt the mega-fight will happen and if it will. . pacman by byKO bfore the 10th.

  • Frankie says:

I love the stratagy to beat Floyd guy…lol. What a clown. Floyd takes that role, the role of the self indulgant villan. He does it to build up rivalry in order to sell more ppv. What is more exciting to watch? 2 of the nicest most humble guys? Or a guy like Floyd who talks a ton of sh*t and somebody wanting to shut him up? To me the answer is clear. If you knew any better, which I would think you should since you are posting on a boxing blog, then you would see that Floyd is actually a pretty respectful,l humble fighter when he’s not promoting a fight. He’s always quick to give a ton of respect after he wins a fight which should be the time to talk the most sh*t, Floyd doesn’t. The fights over, no need to play the part anymore, gives respect to the fans and to his opponent and their camp. If you have seen more than one fight you would know this. It clearly works, he makes more money than any other fighter because of this. Let’s face it, Floyd isn’t the most exciting fighter yet people still want to pay to see him fight.

  • Frankie says:

Manny just needs to man up and take the damn test. They both will take it so no advantage to either fighter. Just think that you will get 30-50 mil for the damn blood test. All the Floyd haters will talk sh*t but pacman is the one ducking here. Take the test and fight to see who is the real p4p king. I’m not going to be like these other clowns and say that Floyd will destroy pacman or vise versa, cause I don’t know. Just like none of you know. Mayweather would be favored for a reason tho. IMO he is just an all around better, smarter fighter. I’ve been following both since they were amatuers. I would be asking manny for the same blood test too. The guy looks like he’s juiced. I hope he is not. I think he is a great fighter and doesn’t need the juice I just can’t understand why he would refuse. If his mental state is really that weak to where he says a blood test will mess up his whole training leading up to the fight, then I say he shouldn’t be a fighter. Fighters are mentaly tough, manny has proved this allready, which is why I can’t figure out why he won’t take a simple test.

  • MBA says:

I’ve said it before, one way of breaking Mayweather is to aim at his shoulders…and Manny can move from side to side to land in angles..he will be hit but he can also hit Floyd…the question now is who gets hurt!

  • run like floyd says:

It doesn’t matter if Mayweather win, MP is a alreay a Hall of Famer.

  • Ric says:

manny could have finished cotto earlier but opted to extend the fight to the distance, as his fights were shown in the philippine tv, the longer the fight the better revenue from the advertisers.

  • ron says:

i think its a fight that pac can win but he has to stick to the game plan to a t…n he cant jsut be trying random st liek he did with cotto or he will lose…but some peoples reason on how he will win just dosnt make sense…only way someones win is a 12 round strategic battle ….they are two great fighters and they wont allow themselfs to be knock out thats what happens when great fighters step in the ring its not like they fighting bums right now its hte best of the best…so please give credit where its due onyl reason why i favor floyd is because hes the fighter i like and i believe defense wins games like any sports and it def will win fights…

  • ron says:

i see a lot of comments about his shoulder roll and how hes going to be so hurt by pacs hits…one i dont know what roach is talking about he hasnt had a shoulder injury since the castillo fight and it wasnt a consitant problem it was something that happen only consitant problem was his hands but his rap coach and gloves now stop that problem so it wont be adding damage to an a messed up shoulder..theres nothing wrong with his shoulder and for those who said it stupid to get hit in the shoulder..so its betta to be hit in the face? and the point of the shoulder roll is to roll the punches off of you not just taking heavy shots in the shoulder what is everybody tllking about…ill give pac credit but some statements dont make sense on why they think he will win…and perosnally i didnt think pac was taking any steroids but refusing any blood test 6 weeks b4 a fight is simple crazy and suspect, and your excuse it will effect manny mentally…is he afraid of needles or something like that was so a dumb excuse and will raise eyebrows on a situation that wasnt that serious…

  • JaRvis says:

Well, look at how the Mayweather camp is doing. They’re demanding for something that is not that necessary, and will probably use it as an excuse not to fight Manny. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mayweather wouldn’t fight Pacquiao, to be honest. They’re demanding for a test to ascertain something that could actually be determined by a simpler test. See the point? Floyd Jr.’s camp is making up with excuses so as not to fight Pacquiao. Is there courage displayed here…?

  • aloha says:

I don’t believe the fight won’t happen. I think some of Pacquiao’s team or adviser maybe talking not to do the Olympic style drug test. Probably Pacquiao doesn’t know anything the whole thing. I believe he will agree with the test. I can’t wait to see this fight.

  • Former Body Builder says:

Didn’t I tell you? I just wrote a response hours ago and no Pacquiao is refusing to take a drug test 2 weeks before the fight. Is he an elite athlete or what?

My good friends…I know steroids. I know people taking steroids and have taken them for years.

    THIS SMELLS FISHY TO ME!

  • christian says:

pacquiao can beat maywheather did you see the hatton fight maybe it will be like that but maywheather is hatton man that would be sick i bet you pacquio trains every day go head trash talk all you want maywheather beacause if you see the look on your face that pacquio does power punch on your face i feel sorry for you r.i.p. maywheather

  • APP says:

MAYWEATHER WILL BE BADLY PUNISHED FOR THIS COMING FIGHT 13TH MARCH 2010.THIS A HISTORY FOR HIS ALL TIME CARRIER AND THEN RETIRED.LASTLY, HE IS VERY NERVOUS TO THIS FIGHT.

  • flip says:

You gotta be kidding me. For all the people who use the cotto fight as a means of judging how pac will fight against floyd, you will see floyd hit the canvas for the first time. The cotto fight was over after the 4th round. manny could have ended it by 5th round max but he has respect for cotto. Why do you think the fight went the distance? Watch again and you will clearly see manny let him stay in the fight after he knew cotto could be easily beaten. Plus pac hasn’t had a long running fight in awhile, might as well get some practice. Pac doesnt like floyd much because his trash talk is not a good example for kids. So pac will destroy him. It will be a spectacular upset. Try defending 12 rounds of relentless attack, pac has the heart to do it.

  • del says:

mayweather has this one. it won’t be an easy fight, but he will be the victor.

  • laylow says:

This is going to be hilarious! PBF is going to win this hands down. Pacquiao is not fighting a malnutrition ODH or a shell of himself Cotto (who will never be the same from the Margacheato fight). No now he is going to be facing a bigger, better, and a faster fighter. Marquez is a counterpuncher who gave Pac fits, and now you guy’s believe he is going to beat Floyd! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Nostradamus says:

OK you win the talk fight.

    But…

Manny will win the actual fight on March 13.

Mayweather will retire in shame after.

  • Frank says:

one more quick point, floyd is a great counter puncher, you think floyd wont be counter punching to mannys face with a lightning fast right hand when he sees manny throwing a punch to his shoulder and leaving himself open? give me a break

  • Frank says:

if anybody was going to hurt or dislocate floyds shoulder it would have been a much bigger DLH fighting at 155. I know pacman destroyed DLH but that was 10 pounds lighter and we all know DLH looked like s*it in that fight. he looked sick dropping so much weight.

  • Frank says:

Ive never heard of floyd having shoulder injuries until just reading this, and thats according to roach. We all know floyd has brittle hands, and fighting with a broken hand didnt slow floyd down a bit. i really dont think that punching floyds shoulder is going to do anything. He expects to get punched in the shoulder which is why he fights that way, using the shoulder roll, better to be punched in the shoulder than in the face. If floyds shoulder was brittle i seriously doubt he would be leading with it. and if u r saying thats how frazier beat ali then why didnt frazier stick to that same stratagy the other 2 fights when ali owned frazier. Roach is a great trainer, one of the all time best, but he is crazy if his game plan for this fight is to punch floyds shoulder.

  • Nostradamus says:

Ohhh I forgot, he has the other shoulder if he dislocates the other one….hahahah good luck shoulder.

  • Nostradamus says:

The Shoulder Roll is an open invitation to Hit me…oww..
Hit me more please…owww…How many high power blows can that shoulder roll take….Man that shoulder is a big part of the body…you lose that shoulder then one of your hands is out of commission…right!

  • mrmango says:

If numbers are correct that PBF opponents on the average landed only 12% of total punch thrown at him and if Manny is lucky enough he will make it 15%-20% of his total output of 720 punches for 12 rounds. Thats a whooping 144 punches to land on PBF pretty face. Manny does not need 144 punches to land, 4 good shots from Pacquiao will put PBF in lala land.

    There goes your statistics.

  • Frank says:

good points ron. i think this fight will play out very similar to the judah fight in that floyd will give manny the first few rounds so that he can adapt and win the remaing rounds. it will be something like 8 rounds to 4. IMO. I think that floyds defensive style is just too good. No doubt pacman will land some great shots, but so will floyd. I just dont think floyd can be beaten at 147. if any fighter in the world has a shot tho, its pacman. which is why this fight will be great to watch. Dont count out a ko by floyd tho.

  • Phoocquiao says:

Manny don’t have a brain? Manny is just a wild boxer? Please.

Roach didn’t tell Pac to “rope-a-dope” Cotto to bait him into brawling. Roach told Pac to stay off the ropes. Pac improvised and it paid off when he landed that head rolling unpper-cut.

Manny is no longer a wild man. Hell, even Roger Mayweather acknowledges that.

@Heavy G. Exactly how is that the dumbest idea? On the contrary my short-sighted friend, it’s genius. Punching the shoulder can do two things. 1) He can potentially dislocate an already damaged shoulder, and 2)The frequent punching of the shoulder will cause blood to swell at the location and potentially bruise the muscle. This will cause the muscle to be tense and will take away Floyd’s speed, thus making taking away the effectiveness of Floyd’s jab and left hook that he throws off of it.

Don’t believe me? How the hell do you think Frazier beat Ali? That’s right, he punched him in the hip until he couldn’t use his legs. Or how about how GSP never let Bj Penn relax his shoulders by constantly pushing him against the cage so that way Bj Penn couldn’t use his hand speed.

It’s human anatomy bro. The shoulder roll is effective when defecting shots to the face. I wonder how long that shoulder will hold up to shots that are aimed right at it? Come March 13th, Floyd will be exposed, watch. That is, if they even fight.

  • Sean Red says:

Mayweather has to be favored in this fight, he is unbeaten and will not be broken by Manny.

  • Frank says:

all of you are forgetting that this fight will be 147, not 145. lets see how pacman fights at 147. And to guy who is comparing the way floyd fought ODH and Hatton to the way Pacman fought them, why dont you compare the way floyd destroyed JMM to the way pacman fought him. By the way didnt floyd aslo score a KO over hatton? Also to guy complaining about floyd throwing money around, who the F*ck cares. Are you seriously that jealous. he is about to make 50 mil in one night. On top of that, thats his character to stir s*it up. To get people to not like him so that way they pay to see if he can get beat up. This will be a great fight either way. Ill be betting on floyed tho

  • d.d. says:

mayweather will make a statement in this fight !! if manny is lucky floyd will get only a decision win !! believe it !!

  • heavy G says:

The ‘shoulder hitting’ tactic is either the dumbest idea ever or just another Roach smokescreen.

Although they fight in different styles, they now have certain things in common: like fast hands and good defense. Floyds defense is fantastic, maybe the best ever. It is mainly accomplished by covering, leaning back and rolling with punches. It is amazing to watch. It must be extremely frustrating to his opponents. Pacquiao’s defense is a newly learned set of tactics taught to him by Roach. It involves head movement, turning his man, and in-and-out foot movement.

Both have already cemented their place in boxing history. Both have all-time great accomplishments. Pacquiao has done the impossible in coming from 106 pounds to 145 pounds and win great fights against top-notch opponents all through those weight classes. No matter who loses this match, he is still an all-time great.

Mayweather has remained unbeaten against the best fighters at 135/140/147 in the last 10 years.(except Mosely, which is not all his fault).

I believe that PBF will survive several scares from Pacquiao’s bombs during the course of the match to win a close decision.

  • Nostradamus says:

Have you seen famous rich people displaying wads of cash and tossing them around? I haven’t seen any because it’s stupid and shows a very low intelligence level.

And Mayweather fans claim that he is smart?

The only time I saw some guy (on tv) tossing some cash is during a police chase of a bank robber trying to get away.

Behind the power of the sword arm lies the power of the mind. Mayweather has this. Pacman doesn’t.

Perhaps you mean Power of the MOUTH.

Just listen to Floyd Jr/ and Sr talk…you will sense a very Low IQ Level.

  • lionheart says:

JR!-make sure of that, coz for me it’s other way around…

  • bush2 says:

what a dumb comment to say that Pacquiao doesn’t have the power of the mind. He didn’t just beat a powerful guy like Cotto with brawn but with brains as well.

Pacqiuao has developed into a well rounded boxer who uses his power, speed and brains to destroy his opponent. Don’t ever think that only Mayweather has the monopoly of brains. Mayweather has the monopoly of trash talking – that I agree.

I don’t think he can beat Pacqiuao who has fought the very best in the last 2 years while Mweather retired and came back to cherry pick a fight with the much smaller Marquez and worse, showed up heavier and paid $600K to guarantee his advantage. Mayweather is fighting someone who is on a roll, while he comes back from retirement. Sounds like Ali coming back from retirement to challenge Holmes for the money and he got beat. Mayweather will be a Roy Jones with the Pacman. He’s gonna deck him almost dead like Hatton.

  • JR says:

Behind the power of the sword arm lies the power of the mind. Mayweather has this. Pacman doesn’t.

  • P.R.SHADOW says:

MANNY LOOKED SLOWER IN HIS LAST FIGHT BUT YOU GOT TO REMEMBER THE SAME WAY COTTO FOUGHT WITH MOSLEY THE KEY WAS THE JABS NOT BAD FOR COTTO AT ALL, PAC GOT TO GO AND WORK AGAINST THAT JAB BECAUSE THAT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THIS FIGHT ALSO PAC MOST REMAIN IN THE CENTER OF THE RING BECAUSE IF HE GOES AFTER FLOYD IT WILL WORK TOWARDS FLOYDS KIND OF FIGHT (LIKE HATTONS FIGHT)

  • Ivan Poral says:

I may say that it will going to be defense versus offense fight as we know that Floyd is the master in that aspect “the defense” while Manny with no doubt is a fighter that can throw a bunch of punches in every rounds. For now, it is really hard to tell if who among the two fighters have the edge, both of them possesses power, speed and toughness. Let see if who’s power, speed and toughness will prevail in the actual fight.

  • gordo says:

this is the king of all fights. march 13 cant come soon enough. i like manny to get the ko/tko, but if it goes to a decision, i believe mayweather will take it. floyd is unhittable and manny is a wrecking ball. i slightly favor manny, but i wouldnt bet against either of them(if i were a gambler). soak this fight in, boxing fans. it could take another generation to produce a fight of this magnitude.

  • amos says:

Someone comented that May has no knockout power. He actually has power but he never takes risk because you have to be flat footed. Mayweathet thinks defense before he throws a punch so its hard to commit to it.When he has his opponent hurt you have seen him go for it but he is also watching out because he’s not the big risk taker. He’s a D fighter and its not in his DNA to be flat footed and punch.

  • jamie says:

Thanks for all the good comments. Who knows if its close when might get a rematch or enen a trilogy. Please click on my name and visit my boxing site.

  • amos says:

Manny will start strong say 1st 2 rounds then Floyd takes over with the straight lead and counter right hands, faints a right lead then hooks and move. Pacman starts to bleed a mess by 6th; fight stopped at 9(tko) rounds from cuts by punches or KO by 10.
The only time Pacman has looked real good is when there’s an immobile target. Anyone that moves(Floyd will do that) will make Pacman restart a lot thus getting frustrated and floyd fights out of rithym. (Its likje a puzzle in there)
Also, when was the last time you seen a real flush punch land on Floyd??
Its gonna be a good fight in that Pacman is bringing Heart but you need more than that fighting the Smartest fighter.

  • Larry says:

FMJ better watch tapes and have a gameplan. Pacman’s current style makes it hard for fighters to adjust in the ring. Also the judges will be critical in this fight. If both fighters land 15 punches a round, who will they favor FMJ or Pacman. Remember the Trinidad/DLH fight where DLH danced the last 5 or 6 rounds. Trinidad won because he was the aggressor.

  • joe says:

people wat fight floyd say he might not look like he has power but he has an the thing with floyd is he has speed an accuracy with that you dont need power accuracy an speed is better pacman is sloppy at times

  • karlo says:

cant really wait for this. Floyd hasnt face anyone who’s as aggressive as manny. It will be just like when manny faced Marquez the first time but only that he’s greatly improved his aggression fighting while he is up against the master of defense. it will be good!

  • Paul Mason says:

Pacquiao to win between round 8-10. His relentless speed and power will over come mayweather

  • manny will pray for mayweather’s safety during the fight.

  • roy says:

show some class , pacman lover, that is the reason why they say pac fans are the worst ,everyone here describing how they think their fighter will win respectfully, got it?

  • roy says:

great article got the juices running, good coments guys I can visualize what you see,how floyd counter is total different , he counter and throw with a right half jab/hook back
as most will jab back. he also lead with a right when someone come in,and and jump in with a lead right upper, floyd can get away missing a right lead with slower fighter, but manny have proven his angle punches can pick out a moving target missing a punch two feet front of him , cotto found out he dont to even be close to pacman when pac find the range.

  • dale kennedy says:

floyd floyd what have you got yourself into… 40-0 now make it 40-1 and retired go manny go someone has to shut that big mouth and your the man to do it more style more stamina mayweather has nothing on you go manny go…. were ever the fight is who cares just get that bell ring and just ring it floyd better bring something special with him cause he is going to need it [he is going to need someone more than his dad to help him] finished boxer who will it be MAYWEATHER

  • Santa Claus says:

I am astounded how some people say Mayweather will KO (not tko) Manny. Are we talking about the same Mayweather or another? Because the Mayweather I know, he has 2 KO’s (again I am not talking about TKOs)in his 40 fights and his last one was 10 years ago. And if talk about TKO’s, his last 4, he managed 1 and 3 decisions. As for Manny, in his 50 fights, Manny has 16 KO’s, and since Mayweathers last KO, Manny has 8 KO’s. So who going to knock out who. If anyone has the ability to Knock Out, it is not pitter pat Mayweather but Manny’s vaunted power to both hands.

i’m a pacman fan, however i strongly believe he would need to do more than just attacking the shoulder to defeat mayweather. not too people like mayweather’s fighting style (boring and too defensive), but that’s what made him a great fighter he is. that style has given him wins in all his 40 professional fights. anyone, including pacman, will have to deal with that style to get through floyd. we (pacquiao fans) need to respect floyd and aknowledge that he’s tools that have caused 40 others come short. I strongly believe pacquiao will win the fight, despite floyd’s defense and style. Pacquiao is much more of package to defend yourself from. Even if you run like floyd, you do so whilst loosing the fight because pacman’s chase is his attack.

  • Dehjz says:

pacman will never be frustrated…Floyds jaw is fragile!! and her abdomen too.. If pacman hits Floyd. It will come up to clinching or running like cotto up until late rounds and Floyds face will be bruise and riched red of blood flows in his nose or in cuts in his eyes.. It will be KO or the doctor stop the fight because of severe cut in the eyes.. and then as always Floyd Sr. will accuse Pacman of using Steriods, etc..

  • dave in sc says:

manny will bring out the best in floyd, and maybe we will get to see freddie roach s#$t his pants!

  • Jeng says:

Im excited to watch this most awaited fight. Both fighters has their own skills en technique. God bless.

  • juden7 says:

Both fighters are number 1, no doubt about it. But the reason why people love Pacman is because of his personality and attitude. He is humble and always cheerful, and concerned (he tried to help David Diaz when he was on the canvass), etc. What Floyd doesnt realize is that being a boxer is much like being an actor in Hollywood. When an actor is snobbish, arrogant, and talks trash, people will not like him and he wont have fans. That is why Manny is loved and Floyd is hated. Not because of skills, but because of attitude.

  • Predatorfather says:

Floyd has full of arsenals in his disposal to dissect his opponent. As a safety first fighter, he uses shoulder roll, auto back track, ducking and dodging with his body moves like neo in matrix when avoiding multiple punches. He then frustrate the opponent by keeping the range out of reach by his opponent while constantly potshots in lighting speed for points in scorecard.

When Pac gets frustrated, Floyd will then see opening and take advantage of Pac’s mistakes to land his underrated combos for a KO or a eyelid cut. Pac’s cuts will lead to a one-sided victory in favor of Mayweather.

  • Dehjz says:

boxerboy is a bitter!! How can you say that boxing is a dying sports? I think floyd will have a cut in both eyes like Cotto and i think that Floyds face and body will battered…. and in later rounds he will notice that he can’t match up with the speed of pacman that will make him run like Cotto Did!! Pacman surely Overwhelmed him!!

  • BisDak says:

Shoulder Roll…..Pacman will NOT hit Floyd’s shoulder when he do that….Pacman will hit Floyd’s “left back-ribs” and followed by hitting Floyd’s “right rib-cage”.

The size of Floyd’s arm is not gonna protect his whole body when he shoulder roll. Leaving his left face, left back-ribs, and right rib-cage very wide open.

  • KO says:

that problem is hitting floyds shoulder is a strategy that has been done before…gatti said he was gonna do it corales hatton and de la hoya said they were gonna bust his shoulder up so he couldnt use it to block punches but it hasnt worked..plus floyd uses a more traditional high guard defense when he fights southpaws so he might not even use that shoulder roll technique..

  • joe rayos says:

Shoulder Roll…that’s the most stupid defensive style that’s why no one uses it except Floyd. I wish Manny gives the most powerful blows on that shoulder roll technique and the world will see how stupid that is when it gets a beating 1-2-3-4-5 combinations…..nevermind the face just get that shoulder dislocated first.

Have you seen any Mayweather “original” technique being copied and used effectively by other fighters? I know that the MMA fighters adopted a Manny techique which they named “The Pacquiao”. Even his big mouth trash talk is not getting copied by anyone.

Mayweather will surrender in 4th…ring doctor stops the fight.

    If the fight happens.

  • MannyPacquiao says:

Good article. I’m a pacquiao fan but this article seems one sided

  • smirk918 says:

Well said…for me the big key for pacmans victory is Roach. Manny’s style differs everytime he fights a new fighter…just watch his last 4 fights..different everytime. Im a fan of both fighters but i favor pac

  • Anmikkim says:

Mayweather is a very good and intelligent boxer but Manny is a great and exciting figther. Mayweather fights for himself but Manny fights for his country. The heart to win for his country would give Manny that extra adrenalin to go for the kill. This is the fight that fans are waiting for. It will not be boring and this would be the first fight of Mayweather that would not bore the fans. Mayweather would give his all to prove that he is the best and Manny would give a great fight, the best that he could give for his ccountry. My respect goes to Mayweather but my heart goes to Manny. My vision: Manny will knockout Mayweather between the ninth and 11th round.

  • 22guns says:

Great article but I beg to disagree, I say its 60/40 in favor of Manny. Floyd finally found an opponent that will outmatch him. Floyd’s power is no much to Pacmans guided missile punch!

  • MMA Fighter says:

I hope the Floyd lovers keep talking it up to push the Vegas odds in Mayweather’s favor. Better still please, please, please, please bet everything you can on Floyd! I need the odds. I’ve made over $38,000 in Pac’s last 4 fights because of loud-mouthed, fckfaced haters like you. Thanks PBF sum lovers, keep it up the good work, trash talk and discredit the Filipino to your heart’s content. I need the money and I’m looking at making an even $50k on March 13, 2010. My bet’s going in right after the announcement 1st wek of January 2010.

  • THE FIGHT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!

  • mccoy_01 says:

@boxerboy: if ur sick & tired of reading articles about “MP & PBF” which happens to be the next best thing in the boxing world today, go to sleep…

  • Predatorfather says:

Pac has a chance but will fall short against Floyd like any other fighters before him.

Pac’s fight with Cotto gives a clear blueprint for Mayweather to abuse Pac from the beginning to the end. It’s kinda toying Pac all around the ring.

Typical stats in score card in 40 of his fights: Punches connected mayweather 55% vs Opponent 12% . Maybe Pac can improve it to 15~20%. LOL!

  • Leroy says:

This is an excellent article… well thought out and seems unbiased.

I agree with you that Mayweather is favored to win this fight, although it is not a foregone conclusion. I think the two fighters are close to being equal in most areas of boxing, but a significant advantage that Mayweather has over Pacquiao is ring intelligence. Undoubtedly, Mayweather is pugilistically, the smarter of the two fighters. Mayweather is a thinking fighter, who can adjust momentarily and instinctively in the ring, while Pacquiao has not demonstrated that he is able to do likewise. Floyd’s power, chin, pride and determination are also underrrated. This guy is mentally, very tough. There is no doubt that either guy has the power to knockout the other. We should also realize that a knockout is not only physically- but mentally- generated.

  • Show says:

This is the fight ive been waiting for. I am a mayweather fan and think he is by far the best boxer in the game, but manny is a scary fighter. He has been fighting his last few fights like he has nothing to lose and thats always a scary thing for an opponent. Its gonna be a great one regardless..

  • boxerboy says:

jamie hooper, can you talk to some exec’s from the 3 major networks about bringing boxing back on the weekends so you and everyone else can stop talking about this upcoming super hyped fight and talk about other fights..it’s getting old! btw, if you didn’t know yet, both of these fighters are unworthy because they’ve either been fighting has beens or bums! please don’t make it bigger than it just because boxing is a “dying sport”

  • Ken says:

Great article! Yes, Pac has a chance, but not much of one.
