Khan and Mitchell stun the world

khan34245By Richie Doyle: As a young gambling boxing fan I find myself gob smacked at what I witnessed Saturday night in Newcastle my bets consisted of two sizable bets one on Breidis Prescott to KO the smaller Kevin Mitchell and the other was on Dmitry Salita to beat an overrated Amir Khan and by god how wrong I was as I have to say I witnessed a night for British boxing to be proud of and never forget.

I’ll start with the young Kevin Mitchell who I so wrongly predicted would be knocked out. From the moment this man entered the ring he showed pure confidence and class as he stayed clear of Prescott in first three rounds just catching him on the counter with some smooth swift counter punches to the head and body , as the fight went on he grew in confidence and in my opinion controlled the bigger man while on some occasions taking the big shots Prescott had to offer and even calling for more.

Then moving into the late rounds he just frustrated Prescott leaving him bemused at times. Then the final round Mitchells corner called on him to stay well away from the Colombian who had humbled Khan just 15 months ago ,but Mitchell wanted to show the 10,000+ crowed just what he could do getting into the middle of the ring and trading big shots with Prescott and doing a little shake of the hips to show his dominance before taking unanimous decision. Great stuff from a man who was almost forced to quit two years ago through injury, can’t wait to see more of him in the future.

Now on to Khan a man who I felt was a bit flattered by his wins over Barrera and Kotelnik and a little over confident going into this fight with Salita a man with a pretty impressive record (30-0-1) and well used to appearing on the big stage as we had seen him on numerous undercards of big fights, however I saw my bet over in a mire 74 seconds with a devastating display by Khan. Now to say he’s completely changed me into a believer is a bit much as I didn’t get to see much of him ,but I will say that he’s left me gasping for more ,his power and hand speed was awesome and I hope to see more of the same as I feel Freddie Roach may have unleashed an unstoppable force on boxing young fast and powerful, all I can say is well done Amir now let’s bring on the big dogs.

I’m not a know all and like everybody I will get things wrong but the thing is to hold your hands up when you do and even though I’m out of pocket, I’m glad to see these two flying the flag for British boxing well done lads.

KHAN LOOKED DEVASTATING THE POWER IS BACK ALONG WITH THE SPEED, ITS A SHAME THAT SOME FANS ARE STILL NEVER HAPPY WITH HIS PERFORMANCE, HOW ABOUT LETS JUST SUPPORT HIM COS HES FROM OUR SHORES. AND STOP BEING PATHETIC AND FEELING SORRY FOR SALITA.

At least Mitchell showed Prescott for what he is. A punched without muchof a boxing brain. He had no answer for Mitchell at all.

Honestly Kahn I expected to win by ko, I’m not sure why salita was the #1 contender… Be interesting to see who kahn takes on next.

Salita never saw that 1st straight right coming and never recovered. I felt sorry for Salita but i think he was way out of his depth in this fight.

Khans only real weakness is his chin, everything else is improving at a brilliant rate. I really wouldnt say Khan stunned the world tonight. Impressive quick win but the expected result.

Mitchell though, i knew he was the better boxer but i also knew he likes to stand toe to toe which you cant do against Prescott, and he didnt, he outboxed him, landed big when the oppertunities arised and was very discaplined throughout. Very good performance from a Super Feather taking on on of Lightweights biggest hitters.

lol, I wouldn’t say stunned the world, probably just stunned Scott Gifoid

I was very impressed by Mitchell. I’ve seen him box on a good few occasions, but thought Prescott would be too big and too powerful. Mitchell showed great discipline and a very good chin, taking some of Prescott’s best shots, but making him miss with a lot of power shots also.
Khan looked very fast and powerful, and he’s only going to improve with Roach.
