JC Superstar -Julio Cesar Chavez
By Klaas Mabetlela: Julio Cesar Chavez and Marvin Hagler got me into boxing and when I reflect into the career of JC Superstar, I understand exactly why. It will help some of the younger boxing fans to look into careers of these all-time greats to enhance their understanding of boxing. Younger fans tend to underestimate and undermine the successes of fighters like Chavez simply because they did not see them fight.
JC Superstar gave a career defining performance when he massacred Edwin Rosario in 11 rounds to win WBA lightweight championship after moving up from Jr lightweight. He was an underdog in the fight against a feared puncher in Rosario. Chavez went on to methodically ripped Rosario apart with short body punches and some ring attendants like the then Iron Mike Tyson were in tears when the fight was stopped. His fight with Meldrick Taylor was voted as the fight of the year for 1990 and fight of the decade for the 90’s. 1990 was also the year in which JC Superstar was chosen as Ring’s fighter of the year.
His fight with Greg Haugen attracted the record attendance crown of 132 274 spectators, the kind of record that would probably never be equaled. He made 20 consecutive title defenses of Jr welterweight title and most scribes rate him as the best of all-times for the division. He fought all time greats like Pernell Whitaker and Oscar De La Hoya and the list of good champs he beat is too long to mention.
Julio Chavez’s longevity in modern era (over 100 wins), style, guts and dexterity put him as one of the very finest to ever grace our fine sport. Long live JC Superstar.

Medrick Taylor beat him for 11 rounds and 2 minutes and 58 seconds….”
Yeah right, and did you see his face??
Hit and run has never been “winning” for me, if you want to be a better fighter than your opponent then fight.
That’s why JC was the best. Pure heart and determination.
JC best of all time
Medrick Taylor beat him for 11 rounds and 2 minutes and 58 seconds- Lets not talk about Frankie Randle
pernell made chavez look like a amature Did you all forget?
My favorite of all time. I grew up watching this man. He is the reason i love boxing as much as i do. He is a true great. He has more wins in a row then boxers now a days have fights. At his prime would put him over any boxer in his division.
Great Article. Chavez was the best in his time hands down.Young fighters want to learn how to break fighters down systematically watch Julio Cesar Chavez. I got into boxing and laced them up because of him after watching one of his fights.
GREAT CHAMPION.
THANK YOU…i got into boxing because of this man… As these so called boxing fans idolizing boxers like Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquioa, dont get me wrong they are good fighters of this era, but if you seen Julio Cesar Chavez in his prime I don’t think Floyd or Manny could beat this MAN!!! he fought with pure heart and determination, you can see that when he fought Meldrick Taylor…I saw Meldrick winning unanimously but with the heart of Julio he won with 1 second left.. This man is a LEGEND!!!
to bad his son didnt get his Genes hahaha
You can see Chavez / Taylor 1 on You Tube. An incredible bout, anyone with even a mild interest in boxing would be amazed.
It shows why Chavez is a legend. Taylor, one of the most gifted boxers of his era, hit Chavez with everything round after round & JC never took a backward step. True Grit.
If he couldn’t out box an opponent (which was rare)he willed his way to win.
His decision over Whitaker however…? That one was at least a little questionable.
Be that as it may, Chavez is an all time top 10 great in my book.
well we don’t need to said anything else.JC is a real champ.he di not ask for something silly before any fight. this is a real legend,if you guys don’t believe you can get some info in the boxing histori
boxing memorabilia. Lets get some of that once in a while, Whos who in boxing world.
